Is it ever ok to lighten black skin? Singer and former model Irene Major has been lightening her skin for 10 years, and doesn't see the problem with it. But AJ Odudu disagrees and says being black is not a choice and black women should be proud of their heritage.

I get it as a black person I have 50 shades of brown on my skin and I want to look even. The products I used are body oils which are not harmful I understand that some products are harmful but linking the reasons to lighten one's skin to culture is 🚮. The other thing people need to recognise is that black people don't even need to use lighting products. For some black people avoiding the sun for 2-4 days lightens their skin tone. All the lady was saying was she uses those products because of dark spots and of course logically you can not avoid other areas. If they didn't speak over her they would understand her point of view. Back here in Nigeria, we call it colonial mentality. And that's when you are conditioned to see everything about yourself in the negative and everything about your colonisers in the positive.
Unlike colourism, which arises from people trying to adapt to their imposed standards just to fit in, colonial mentality is a variant condition that results in conditioned and unconscious lowered self esteem that makes one feel perpetually inferior about him/herself that even when placed under a different situation or standards, s/he would still prefer her conditioned foreign standard over own.

This situation is deeply troubling - it reflects the self-hatred and internalized racism that can drive skin bleaching. In the African American community, that's simply unacceptable, a rejection of one's identity and heritage. If caught, the person would be shunned, not praised. Bleached skin doesn't make you "light-skinned", it just looks unnatural and uncanny. This harmful practice stems from toxic standards that devalue natural Black features. Outside of rare cases like Michael Jackson, skin bleaching isn't common in America - our diverse complexions are a product of our complex history, not something to be erased. Instead, we must celebrate melanin and racial pride, not promote skin color dysphoria. Our varied shades of Blackness are all beautiful, and deserve to be uplifted, not erased.
