  • This video is for people who have a BALL END SHOWER ARM in their shower AND do not wish to replace the entire arm.
    Though you could probably learn something even if you have a standard 1/2'' inch male shower arm. I learned a lot from many hours scouring the internet.
    I decided to share it with all of you in the hopes of saving someone the pain I experienced. Just try to find a Shower Head now-a-days that says it fits a Ball End Shower Arm. It's not gonna happen.
    This comment all the time...
    Question:
    "𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘺 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘳𝘮 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘦?"
    Answer:
    Replacing the shower arm is a perfectly acceptable option but can pose its own problems. Being in an older home is one of them. No plumbing skills or knowledge. What if you break something? Maybe you don't own a large enough wrench or a spare shower arm. This is simply an alternate solution. It's nice to have multiple solutions to a problem.
    I believe MANY people agree with that. The comments section and the likes on this video are proof of that.

    Oh my!!!! Thank you, thank you! I have the exact same shower neck with the ball.. I bought a new shower head last night. I tried to replace it today. I had the same reaction. What is this????? I called around and everyone told me. No, we haven't carried those adapters in 15+ years.

      I've heard this from so many people. So sorry you had the same issue. What a huge pain For something that should be so simple; changing a shower head! Check out some of my links to order the adapters.
      If you read through these comments, it seems most people needed the Price Pfister adapter. Some have had luck at Lowes finding single pack adapters. Hope your plumbing problems are washed away soon, best of luck!

    OMG YOU ARE MY HERO!! Like everyone else… this was me! My only big problem now is unlike you, and unless someone wrote in comments I haven’t seen, I don’t have a metal collar above the ball end 😭It was some POS plastic threaded thing. So of course when I went to take it off it was kinda ok, but brittle. I mean, it had to be as old as everything else. When I discovered of course I couldn’t install the shower head I had, I went to put it back on, and crack! Totally split 7/8 of the way. It’s only thing keeping old shower head on and it’s spouting water onto the enclosed tile ceiling 🤦‍♀️ I try to pretend it’s a waterfall 😂. Now where in the hell do I get THAT part?! Lol. But thank you!! This helped so much!

    Back again. 😀 After receiving my order for the Adapter we needed - which I shockingly found at our local hardware store's website - my husband installed one of them today. Removed the very old, ignored, shower head and EASILY replaced it with a new one. Turned the water on and SUCCESS. 🚿 🤗 So happy that the install went smoothly and no curse words were necessary. 😂
    By the way, since we live in a subdivision built in the 1990s, I shared your video with our neighborhood and surrounding area. Most probably upgraded a long time ago, but just in case I wanted to "pay it forward". There has been one very interested to help their parents. Your kindness lives on. ✌

    Thank you! Thank you! A thousand times over! Our home was built in the 90s and we have exact same shower fixture in both bathrooms. Husband was SO frustrated that we have just "left it alone" for years, even though we needed a new Shower Head. Found your VERY helpful video today after a Google Image search. Wow, just an Adapter! We are seniors and you've made our fix so much easier and less costly. Husband wanted to hire a plumber, yikes. He's attempting to install a Dog Wash Shower Attachment with Diverter and that's how we ended up here. Our tub/shower still has the plastic disc with a readable logo so we know to get the PFISTER adapter. 👏👏👏👏

I ordered 2 of the Glacier Bay Pfister Part 794 659 for 2 bathrooms at $ 5.50 each and free shipping. Great buy. Note to all, don't be skimpy with the Teflon tape. My new shower head came with a roll and I taped every thread and went back over some spots until the tape was gone. Time-consuming but it gave me 100 % confidence it wouldn't leak. Tested it on high pressure. Perfecto.

    Thank you for the great info...I had the exact same problem. I thought I could just replace the shower arm with a new one, but it wouldn't budge, and I feared I'd break it off in the wall if I put too much pressure on it. The adapters, which I didn't know existed before I saw your video, solved my problem. Much gratitude.

    My sister asked me if I can swap her downstairs shower head with her upstairs. I said no problem. Take me 5 minutes. Upstairs has the ball joint shower stem. I was like wtf is this? Im actually a home contractor and had never seen it before. I can't even get the old shower head off without destroying it cause it's so old that its rusted on and there is no way to even get a grip on the head even with tools. But this video just informed me what kind of neck it is. Im still not sure how to get the old one off without destroying anything but this is still some useful knowledge. I figured the whole shower neck needed to be replaced.

    I randomly found your video while looking for the proper way to install a new shower head on a ball joint shower arm. We had the exact same situation with a Price Pfister shower head in our 40 year old home, and I thank you for the great information and video. I have just replaced my old Shower Head with #2, below, and also just ordered the Adapter to have on hand down the road.
    I do, however, have some comments that might help others in the same situation....
    1) You CAN just buy a single adapter directly from the New Resource Group OR Amazon. I just bought the PP-ADPT from Amazon for $ 5.50 plus shipping.
    2) You CAN alternately replace the old shower head with the following from Jenco Wholesale for $ 6.99 plus shipping. I ordered directly from them and the part was here in 2 days (I paid for the expedited shipping and not very expensive) and it was a perfect match. I found Jenco Wholesale after some research online and they have just been amazing. Here's the link to the replacement Price Pfister Ball Joint Shower Head (by Lasco): www.jencowholesale.com/search?q=82-08-2371 I also believe you can order this on Amazon, but I went directly to Jenco because they were able to compare my (broken) Price Pfister with their replacement part.
    Hope this helps, too.....
    (What did we do before CZcams videos?!?!?!)

    • @Underdrummer
      @Underdrummer  Před 6 lety

      Hey Sandie Cohen, wow! I didn't think they made that shower head anymore! I didn't even try to search for it as I figured there was no chance. That is exactly what my old heads looked like.
      I have only done one shower head in the house, the one you saw in the video, and eventually I'll have to deal with the other one. Thanks for the link, maybe I'll just buy the old PP head and live with that for a while.
      I was aware that I could order just one adapter but the issue was I didn't know which one I needed. Since there are only three in existence, I figured ordering the 3-pack was the best bet. Now that I know which model I need for this house, I can order just the single adapter for the other bathroom.
      Thanks for the helpful tips. I know, I've thought that before as well, without people posting helpful how-to videos there are many things I could not have accomplished. Including changing a door handle on a 1998 Ford Ranger and I'm not a mechanic!

      Hi Underdrummer,
      Thanks for your lovely reply and comments.
      If you call Jenco, ask for Kim and 'tell her I sent you' :-). Kim was absolutely amazing and kind, and we were able to text back and forth photos to ensure that the shower head would work.
      To add to your door handle change: I found a video on replacing a Power Supply in a 2011 iMac computer and was able to accomplish that without any difficulty at all, and I'm a 60-something grandmother (albeit a handy one!).
      Keep up the great work with your videos on CZcams ;-)

    • @Underdrummer
      @Underdrummer  Před 5 lety +3

      Martin Velazquez, replacing the shower arm is a perfectly acceptable option but can pose its own problems. Being in an older home is one of them, hence this alternate option.
      Besides, ordering a part that is not expensive and is guaranteed to work is not really a "nightmare" unless you don't know how to shop online.

      @@Underdrummer It seems to me these adapters would not be manufactured at all if using them was not easier and simpler than replacing the shower arm. There wouldn't be a market/demand for them and thus no reason to make/distribute/sell them. As for Martin, I rent an apartment in a very old house which has clearly had some less than ideal work done in periodic makeovers/renovations/"repairs" over decades. These adapters can be useful to renters who wish to make minimal/discreet alterations to their landlord's property. Further, I was reluctant to remove & replace the shower arm, as easy as that *seems*, as I could feel the pipe on the other side of the wall (that I can't access) moving around pretty freely. Due to that give/mobility/wobble of the pipe, I was concerned that once I removed the (weird ball end) shower arm, I wouldn't be able to line up (and screw in) a modern replacement arm into the fitting (behind the wall). Trying to get a new shower arm into place without access to the water shutoff or the pipes in the wall seemed like a potentially more nightmarish scenario. So, Underdrummer, I do indeed appreciate the time and effort you took to find these adapters and to make the video that clearly explains their usage and alleviates any potential nightmare that could have arisen.
      I would prefer to buy a single (correct) adapter rather than a three pack. I was wondering, of the three adapters you received, did the Price-Pfister adapter have the narrowest, oddest threading on the larger end? My current shower head looks just like the one you replaced so I assume the adapter you used is the one I need and I think the answer to this question would confirm that. None of the pictures I've found online show the threading clearly enough for me to be totally sure about the adapter I need to buy. Thank you very much.

    • @Underdrummer
      @Underdrummer  Před 5 lety +3

      Hey ChefJohn, you're welcome. I couldn't agree more. I made the mistake of posting this video on a Plumbing Reddit and was heavily scorned for not just changing the shower arm.
      As you so clearly pointed out, not everyone has the skill, tools or desire to change a shower arm!
      And acting like it is faster than this adapter is absurd.
      I don't understand some of the hostility when it comes to DIY video comments.
      There's always more than one way to get a project done.
      I think I say in the video that the Price-Pfister is the one I end up using. It's been a while and I don't recall specific details that I didn't write down. Also in the description I include the measurements of the other two adapters threads.
      Thanks for comment. Have a great day and good luck with the plumbing!

      wasn't too bad. it was a pack of 3 for like $10 w/ tax. I ordered the adapter from amazon while watching this video. I have the exact same one as you. House built in the early 80s

    I’ve been looking for the answer to this forever. I kept just paying for new attachments I think would work and they never did. Then I’d give up for another year or two. The current shower head I have is terrible. Just ordered the 3 adapters. Thank you very much!!

      @@Underdrummer Ok adapter arrived connects great to new shower head removed old shower head only to find no coupler on the shower arm (which explains why the previous owner had locked the shower head in place with some type of putty/adhesive), now on hunt for a solution (dont want to remove shower arm as I think that will end up with a major tiling exercise) .
