- In this video, I'll be replacing rusted out tailgate hinges on a 2004 GMC 2500 Sierra.
The same part is used in GM/Chevy models from 1999-2006
Other year GM and Chevy trucks are pretty much the same process, the hinge part is just different. If you need to take on a hinge replacement on your truck just make sure to buy the part for your correct year of truck.
1999-2006 Chevy/GMC 4 Piece Tailgate Hinge set I used:* amzn.to/34IrPTP
(The non-pre-rusted one)
Pre-rusted, would not recommend:* amzn.to/2Li79tU

Very helpful 😊
Thanks. Had mine disassembled 30 minutes after watching your video.
Where'd you get the bolts? Size ?
On the tail gate peices look like they are connected to a peice that runs into tail gate
Good vid. Just finished doing this to mine, except where would I find or what size is the nut on the tailgate door side that the hinge screws into? I have one missing.
Excellent, but I will be fighting way more rust 2003 GMC North Ohio, and yes she runs and drives way tooooo good tooooo give up on her.
good video man
Thank you!
I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado 2500 and the hinge on the tailgate had 1 bolt and then welded
Haha, that could be tough to remove
Hey man really good video thanks for putting it out there and getting straight to the point. How are those hinges holding up? I’m looking into ordering the same 4 piece kit you have listed
That’s a good question. So far so good, everything is still working great, the paint has rubbed off a little bit. Looking back I wish I would’ve have taken the time to get them powder coated, or bought a kit from Harbor freight and powder coated them myself.
my 2000 s10's tailgate is completely rusted through on the bottom aswell as the hinges
That's a bummer. I've got another truck (An 05 Silverado) since filming this video that's in a similar condition - the tail gate is so rusty that here is no longer a solid place to put hinges. It looks like it's going to have to be a new tailgate for that truck.
Hi, I ordered the ones you suggested. I made sure they were the same as the original ones before installing. But after installation I noticed that there was too much play between the fittings so as I'm going down the road the tailgate rattles. I complained to the company and they sent me another set but that is the same. Did you have that problem? I'm thinking of sanding down my originals and putting them back on. Mine were not that worn.
Hi Christine!
That is a good question. I didn't have that problem with the truck in the video (a 2004 Sierra)
However, I do have a 2005 Chevy Silverado that I've also replaced the tailgate hinges on. Oddly enough that one had some sort of steel shim between the truck bed and the hinge. I did a little search online and couldn't find any product that looked like it for the 1999-06 body style trucks. When replacing those hinges on the 2005 I just reused the old shims with the new hinges.
My suspicion is that perhaps the previous owner of my 05 Silverado had the same problem you are describing and found or made these steel shims to remedy it, but I'm not sure.
The only time I've had a tailgate ratling was on a 2000 Chevy, I ended up replacing the triangle-shaped rubber tailgate latch bumper stops and the tailgate striker post/bolt, and that fixed it. Mine were pretty worn down so I'm not sure that would help your situation any.
I think your idea about sanding down the originals could be a good option for you, especially if they are still in good shape.
Sorry, I don't have a better answer for you.
Please let us know what you end up doing and if it fixes your tailgate ratling!

@@mikekrzesowiak7944 Thank you for your response. I cleaned up the originals and clear coated them and will put them back on. They fit together snug. The replacements I got are just cheaply made and soldered and I guess they didn’t pay attention to there being a gap when put together. I should have gone with a more expensive set. Next time. Thanks
anyone know how to take the hinges off a 2015 tailgate? trying to fit a new tailgate to my 07 sierra but hinges dont match up... bolts are seized on truck side(if i need to ill drill them out but looking for a easier method first.) I don't see any obvious way to take the hinge of the 2015 tailgate.
Any chance you know what bolts you used? Can't seem to find any info. and I'm can't get any out of my old tailgate w/o snapping the heads.
Hmmm shoot, I don’t remember if I bought new ones or just reused the old ones(mine might have still been in good enough shape, it sounds like yours weren’t). I sort of remember taking the bolts into the auto store (Napa or O’Rilley) and asking if they had a replacement, but I can’t recall. Let me do some digging and get back to you, I might be able to find an old receipt
@@mikekrzesowiak7944 I now don't remember, but i think they might've been M6 fine threat? They were $.89 at Ace Hardware, I wrote down 1463-D if that ever helps anyone anywhere.
@@littledragon79 Thanks, I think that will be helpful!
I looked through my receipts and I didn't have anything so I would guess I reused the old ones.
You made that look way too easy
haha, thanks!
