49 here, as well. I was a natural competitor during most of the 1990’s. Met Dorian up in Hoboken, New Jersey at a show in May of 1998. He was a speaker and the crowd went nuts. All the big guns from that era were there because the day before was Night of Champions. Different era.

No he couldn’t, his legs, arms, chest and shoulders were way too small for nowadays standards. The only thing he‘d slay would be conditioning but I don’t see him place any higher than 10th or 11th today. Dorian is overrated AF, deal with it.
I'm 50 years old and followed Dorian in the 90's as he was my Body Building Idol, Dorian is the best ever for his Muscle Mass and out of this world Conditioning.
Linda Murray (8-time Ms. Olympia)interviews Dorian Yates ( aka the shadow) in, what I call, the greatest real bodybuilding era of all time. ( also the mid to late '80s ) I remember going to the mall’s bookstore with such enthusiasm, as I spent hours looking at pictures and reading numerous articles. You can’t recreate or duplicate this era any more than those who have tried ( and failed) to recreate Woodstock. I wasn't born during Woodstock, but I’ve witnessed many tries at this recreation and it failed. I have been so blessed to see the greatest, of all time, all on stage, at the same time.
interesting to see Dorian 3 weeks after the Oympia, although i would have loved to see him 3 weeks before the the 95 Olympia, i think that would have been the best ever version of Yates
@@anythingbodybuilding1567 so what?apart from front double biceps all other poses, 6 in total, got better in 95 he was heavier and even harder and more detailed in 95 too yes you could say 93 was less flawed but its not his best ever from a competition POV Just like 99 coleman was less flawed than 98 because he got rid of the gyno, but most say 98 was better
Dorian was so super humble in interviews when he was competing. Its kind of weird to compare to his interviews these days, where he is pretty full of himself, even though he talks about having had all this spiritual transformation.....
@@kevindoughty3907 There is an enormous amount to love about Yates. The dense hard full look he had has never been replicated. And he did it with a non-standard approach, backing his own judgment and ability to read his own body and results. His tenacity and mental approach are obviously legendary. I’ve listened to tons of post-retirement interviews for the very fact of the information that you mention. But, when I say “full of himself”, I’m talking about his coupling of a smug non-verbal demeanour, in the context of all too regular self-aggrandisement of what he achieved and how he did it, and constant efforts to paint himself as the greatest and to set himself apart from everybody else. Even if it means disrespecting other athletes. This is my subjective perception. I think that the attitude I perceive though is most likely what Brandon Curry referred to as “Dorian being Dorian”, in response to Yates’s criticisms of Curry after his Olympia win. In the end this was another opportunity for Yates to remind everybody of something he is always ready to remind us about, that he was the greatest in the greatest era ever. Compare to Coleman, who by numbers is considered by a greater percentage of fans and expert commentators alike to be the greatest. He is a paragon of humility and cites a host of bodybuilders as being better than him, even Shawn Ray!! I have no doubt IRL Dorian is a great guy to know and connect with when he’s not being interviewed and focusing on his bodybuilding achievements. Its pretty obvious he’s a great bloke underneath all the ego projection. But for me, and it is just my subjective feeling, I find the humble, respectful, softly spoken, feet on the ground, unretired Yates, more endearing than the smug, bragging, other athlete bashing, post retirement Yates. I was a teenager beginning my bodybuilding experience when Yates won his first Olympia, and I idolised him as my favourite bodybuilder his entire career. But personally, his post-retirement attitude turns me off a bit. Its just me and my feeling.
nah, he had a great '96 showing, probably his driest despite the diuretics ban. It was miles better than '94. He was improving on all aspects except the midsection. Had he kept his midsection in check and not torn his tricep, the '97 Olympia wouldn't have been a controversial one. His back and legs were at their biggest and best they had ever been. Look up "Dorian Yates 1997 rear relaxed" that puts Coleman to shame.
@@dj_m1999 His conditioning was better but his torso was clearly growing faster than his arms. He's comparatively flat in 96 and looked less than optimal at the English Grand Prix of that year. Torn tricep or not, his symmetry was clearly declining in 97. Yates even said 95 is his best version
@@adamkarimian7137 his symmetry was declining but at cost of other things improving drastically. It's a tradeoff. Just like Ronnie in 2003 came out with the most horrible gut at that time and a ton of water retention all over yet he shocked the world and it's still regarded as one of his best showings. By '97 the sport had already shaped to be what we know it as today, even the more aesthetic guys were buying into the hype. Levrone in '97 was full blown, at his biggest. Ray came in at his biggest in 1998, Flex also. Your argument is sound, but symmetry was already overrated by that point and today it's even more overrated and overlooked.
@@adamkarimian7137 Yates said that it's a tie between '93 and 95, not that '95 was the best. Also, he never had great arms to begin with and his back which was his bread and butter had become even bigger and better by '97 so following that logic he'd be even more dominant if not for the injury. In fact, Levrone said on record that Yates would beat Ronnie in '98 had he not torn his tricep and competed.
