Known worldwide as Golden Eagle or The Quadfather, Tom is considered the uncrowned Mr. Olympia 1981.
In 1965, Tom was just 10 years old when he began to train, his parents having bought him bodybuilding guru Joe Weider's guide to training along with a full set of equipment.
One of the most infamous bodybuilders of the 1970s and 1980s, Platz appeared on the Mr. Olympia stage multiple times, competing against some of the greats such as ‘The Austrian Oak’, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Chris Dickerson.
Many will recognize Tom for his massive and shredded legs, which are still big even in his 60s.
Despite never taking home a first-place title, Platz gave bodybuilding his all and many argue that he should have achieved better placings throughout his career.
Notable contest placements include:
1986 Mr. Olympia - IFBB, 11th
1985 Mr. Olympia - IFBB, 7th
1984 Mr. Olympia - IFBB, 9th
1982 Mr. Olympia - IFBB, 6th
1981 Mr. Olympia - IFBB, 3rd
1980 World Pro Championships - IFBB, Mr. Universe
Tom is very well known for his extremely intensive training, where he would push himself hard and often to failure, much like Mike Mentzer and his Heavy Duty methods.
He stated that he never wanted to leave the gym knowing he could have done more, and when you think you are finished you actually have about 5 more reps in you.
He is still heavily involved in the fitness industry, passing on his knowledge and training methods to younger generations.

@@TrenbolognaSARMich look it up he won the heavy weight class in Mr Olympia 1979
The Shadow, and the Golden Eagle. Two of the best Men in bodybuilding. Great first episode.
I'm 51 ,I still lift and grew up idolising these two legends back in the late 80's-90's❤💪🏼
Yup
I m 32 years old guy but at my gym their is a old dude of 82 years he lift as heavy ass I would be shocked and that guy motivate me to pump up more
@@riteshjoshi8406 good lad, keep lifting 💪🏼
Watching this live is CRAZY. 2 legends.
Where did you see it live?
@@iiyyxxnn Dorian was streaming it on this channel.
I commented this as I was watching the stream.
@@TypicallyUniqueOfficial To me it appears he posted it as a regular video as it is not under the live section. So it wasn't actually live streamed, you just watched it as it was posted?
@@iiyyxxnn when a live is finished, it is uploaded as a video after.
I watched it live.
Bring on Levrone Next!
Man, that would be awesome. I saw a few clips of Kevin talking about Dorian and there was real respect there.
Man, I can hear these two speak for eternity.
Especially Dorian, always straight to the point!
Tom's energy is impeccable.
Thanks for this podcast Dorian!
At 66 years old. The one quad exercise I still do is free barbell squats! All because of the inspiration of Tom Platz!
Dorian , you never spoke this much your entire career ! Great job
Tom platz is just awesome....after a facial bells paltsy he still has same energy 😮😮😮❤❤❤, me as a brain stroke survivor getting huge motivation from him.....
Lee Haney next PLEEEASE! And thankyou for this podcast Dorian
Definitely 👍
Omg, the toughest most intense guys in bodybuilding history, and maybe in the history of sports, chatting and sharing memories. Wow! This is just one of the most memorable moments in internet history!
About time Dorian started his own podcast 👏 🙌
Great show Dorian! Hopefully one of many, many more to come!
holy shit, as legendary as it can gets
Two legends! A mesh of their training styles has brought me more success in the gym in 2 years than in 10 years prior of other approaches/mindsets.
what did you exactly change?
@@waldmeisterbrehm I was mostly training and competing in powerlifting for many years so that played into it of course, but essentially I was just following a mix of specific powerlifting training with auxiliaries for general bodybuilding. When I stepped away from powerlifting due to some unrelated injuries and got into bodybuilding more, I sort of floundered around with approaches. I was dedicated and consistent in doing the work, but I didn’t focus intensity into fewer sets, and instead spread it out across long workouts with many sets.
When it all clicked - I first did Dorian’s blood and guts approach strictly for 6 months, then I discovered Tom’s approach for legs. I combined the two approaches by essentially doing blood and guts for upper body and Tom’s insane style for squats/lower body. I put on mass, enjoyed the gym more, and was far more efficient in the gym (less time lifting). That allowed me time each week to also enjoy getting into cardio, which I was terrible about previously.
TLDR: I do less sets but they are extremely intense. Blood and guts almost to the T for upper body, Tom one “real set” insanity for legs. There is nothing groundbreaking about what they preach, but the simplicity of it mentally saw me pushing myself to the absolute limit. When I train squats, for instance, I leave everything I have at that rack.
I prefer doing one set to failure, but a prolonged set with heavy weight and reps, doing whatever it takes to pump out more reps with slowed and control form, then negative reps
Yates legs reminded me of Platz. Muscularity high on the thigh with sick tear drop.
@@user-nb1ex7th2i imagine platz in the 90s think he'd be bigger?
Tom is such a beautiful soul! God bless you Tom!
I don’t ever comment on videos normally but I have to say that this is the single most entertaining podcast I’ve ever had the privilege to listen to. Great energy, Dorian is a great interviewer, and Tom always knows what to say. Both had great questions and brought a lot of valued insight to the table. Wholesome and informative and refreshing can’t get better than that.
Appreciate that
Wait for this legendary collaboration.
Historical talk

Two of the nicest non conceited bodybuilders I've ever heard talk! Dorian great interview Tom is a legend and a very nice guy!
Can never get bored listening to the old school bodybuilders who went to work in the gym like no one else.
Dorian is an underrated communicator. Articulated, entertaining, smart... he is great at this stuff too.
Dorian was my bodybuilding idol when I first began training. I remember him saying that Tom Platz was one of his idols when he came up. This is a great having them together for a podcast!
Dorian is potentially the best Mr o.
The most real bodybuilder. Thanks Dorian !
Will always be the best to me
92-93 Dorian was the most complete bodybuilder ever. From top of the traps, down to the soleus. He had everything
Platz possibly the best never to win the title.
This was honestly the best podcast I've watched/listened to in years. Two legends sharing stories, knowledge and advice. This was great, I'm 35 years old with some injuries but still can't wait for my next workout, and now I'm even more excited. Thank you both, take care and long live the legends.
I was fortunate enough to have Tom Platz teach my ISSA certification class in 1998. That was a great couple of days!
I was waiting Dorian's podcast for decades.
Toms intensity was is and will be unsurpassed only equalled by Dorian ..true grit this personality type is the same in ANY field that get things done.. And being Professional... Class.. ACDC personified...🙏💖✌️😌 ....
I watched Total Rebuild, the film based around 1980 Mr Olympia, which first introduced me to Tom. What an amazing positive, passionate gentleman. Only in my 40s has lifting weights gone to a more spiritual moment between me and my body. Possibly one of the greatest meetings of minds in bodybuilding there will ever be. ❤❤❤❤❤
I admire two gentlemen very much. Not only bodybuilding wise, but as a human beings. No bullshit, straight to the point, Just pure dedication :) cheers from Poland

Fantastic!!!!! What a chemistry these two have!! Such powerful energy!! Looking forward to part 2.
Holy shit. Both of my idols in the same podcast! Awesome!!
Grew up watching these guys and now to hear them talk about the old days is awesome! Down to earth, no BS dudes that just worked hard and made it to the top of their sport. Living Legends!
Two of the greatest, true blood and guts podcast 💪
Directly from Brazil following the legend Dorian Yates!
Theres still some hardcore bodybuilders particularly in England! Guys like James Hollingstead and Jordan Peters have kept the old school mentality alive. When i think of guys from England, i still think gritty and hardcore as an American
My dad used to work in the Pits (Ollerton and one other I can't recall). His body is f'd now. Beat knees, Bronchitis, vibration white finger and practically deaf in one ear, says it is the best job he has ever had! Riding on trains to the coal face (under ground) someone playing the mouth organ and other Miners providing a beat with their tools etc. Then the other side was that it's a dangerous job.
Wow simplemente impresionado me tope con el canal de Dorian. Un placer escuchar estas leyendas del deporte hablar de sus vidas y conocimientos. saludos desde argentina!
I’ve followed your entire night of Champions/ Olimpia career. I was very motivated to stay in shape. But not as fortunate as you to discover your life’s passion so young. But I’m on my way way now to my own direction. And here you are again motivating me. Thanks
Keep it up
I need to see it
Dorian, awesome interview! The energy of you and Tom talking is incredible. You also described "The Great Awakening" perfectly about what's taking place in the world today.
thanks for getting tom on one of the best most honest podcasts to date. i was actually at the british in 86 spectating he bought the house down of course that era of bodybuilding was the best ever in my opinion.
37:40 THIS IS THE KEY TO FINDING YOUR PATH IN LIFE.
Doesn't get more legendary than this. Dorian & The Quadfather. What a great chat 🙌Really looking forward to this series. Thanks so much Dorian.
What a class act!
Love those 5x7 smaller Iron man magazines. Those were packed with information and easy to collect too.
Both of you, Tom Platz and Dorian Yates, Dorian Yates and Tom Platz, are my major source of inspiration and passion for going each day to the gym in order to fulfill my routines based on your excellent recomendations and advices!!!
1st i noticed you've got this channel.. Short story: Bam! Subscribed. Love y'all!
What a podcast! Tom Platz has a fantastic philosophy and view of life, drawing inspiration from people around him and giving it back in his own way. Not to mention this positivity of his. Incredible persona. I see some aspects of him in myself that I thrive towards as well and that's why I enjoyed listening to this tremendously.
met him briefly in Vancouver BC like 40 yrs ago....nice guy....squated 2plates 5 min ....huge legs
Two Bodybuilding Rockstars.😎✌💪
Definitely need James Hollingshead on your podcast. Same mindset, same work ethic and you are one of his BB idols.
Nothing like watching a Dorian video before the gym for inspiration and getting hyped up for some good lifts
More special than "making it" as pro bodybuilders when they were young, is the camaraderie these guys still share so many years later
This is the content we all love to see such legends in the sport!
Shadow talk!! Gonna be the Most anticipated podcast by Mr Yates himself
Dorian Yates, thank you for being there, you changed my life, after seeing your photos and videos from training, I realized that I needed to change something in this life, thanks to you I changed for the better, I began to train harder, I found my goal and path in bodybuilding, You are my idol, thank you for everything you do. You will always remain a legendary athlete and I hope that I can become the same bodybuilding legend as you.
Keep it up
Thank You Very Much Mr Platz and Mr Yates for this Precious Podcast, i get much of gym motivation and life lessons from what y'all talking in this video and i become more knows about Mike Mentzer too, Y'all the true Heroes Sir, God Bless You All
Was waiting for this!!!
Fucken Dorian Yates. Man's man! This channel came out of nowhere 👍🏽
Good to hear you mention Casey. What an inspiration he was w all those Arthur Jones stories.
omg I've been waiting for so long for something like this lets goooooooo
I just wanted to say.....what a great bodybuilders talk with two such a great athlets....Mr. Yates I have been following you for past 30 years and always it is a pleasure to hear you talk, give advices and being such a normal, good and modest person although you have accomplished so much in this sport. If someday I could shake your hand it woul be such a honour for me, because you have been and are great motivation for me for past 30 years. I wish you all the best. Greetings from Croatia
I am glad that I could inspire you for so many years!
@@DorianYatesNutrition Thank you for all.
Really, being able to meet you in person it would be great honour.....there is not so much persons for whom I could say the same thing. You distinguished yourself being active competitor, with training style and with confidence in yourself pushing yourself harder than anybody in this sport. I feel obligated to tell that nonostant it is a known thing. Yesterday I went to the gym and I wasnt feeling great before it and I was thinking maybe I shouldnt go....and I thought to myself.....some almost 30 years ago Dorian through the snow walked to the gym preparing for Mr. Olympia, and I am driving myself with the car to have a relaxed workout in the gym . I have no problem, no snow, it should be fun, and it was fun.
To be honest, I could write nothing, I could just give a like to the video, being midle aged, working, accomplished in life with family and no problems in life but I felt it is right to write something personal to the man who is inspiration to me......and yes, just to shake hand to You it would be an honour and a moment to remember.
Through all of my youth and now being able to hear more advices from you through social media I could say - your tips, advices and raccomandations are a tresure!
I have been working out for 30 years and still I get something to know much more from You - positives, negatives, dont do it with momentum and etc. it is not all about only regarding the training, there is much more because You evolved through the years much more than the others, and from You people can hear things about life, spirit and other things.
Thank You once again.
Could listen to yates all day ..super intelligent 👍🏻
Him and tom Platz are my favourite very intelligent bodybuilders
Tom is incredible, such energy & positivity.
This is was a fantastic interview! I could listen to you two speak all day
Let’s goooo!!!!! Dorian podddd
This is going to be amazing. I can't wait for this one!
The conversation I've been waiting YEARS for!! Starting it now! Lets goo!!!
Can't wait to see it!!!!
This is as good as it gets,Thank you gentlemen.
Thank you Dorian! That was awesome! Lots of great memories and a reminder to keep at it.
Can’t wait
Excellent stuff.
When I started out working out it was back around 1990-1 which was in Lloyd Samuels gym which he opened in my little town in Staffs and I remember hearing Lloyd talking about Dorian and the Olympia after Lloyd had placed well in both Mr Britain and Mr Universe.
The atmosphere in that gym was great, Lloyd was regularly around giving advice and there was always someone willing to spot. Sadly, these kinds of gyms disappeared when the giant franchises landed.
Still miss the original Nautilus Pull Over machine to this day!
This was a great watch
Im speechless. But i wish this was longer. And i can’t wait for more.
So glad this happening
Hell ya. This what we needed
Amazing! Two favorites all time together chatting it up!
Thanks for this!
Hell yeah. Dorian. Shadow Talk.
