2020 Kawasaki Teryx KRX 1000 Test Review

  • One week after debuting the Kawasaki Teryx KRX 1000 at their dealer meeting the time had come for a proper KRX 1000 test, with two days of hard driving in the desert and rock trails of Moab Utah.
    We can see adding more power to the KRX 1000 for racing, climbing steep dunes, or just upping the thrill factor another notch. The chassis and suspension certainly feel fully capable of dealing with it. If appearance holds true the KRX 1000 could be one of the toughest Sport SXSs on the market, a capable weekend warrior and a great candidate for building a race machine.
    The KRX delivers strongly when it comes to handling, suspension, terrain-ability, comfort and attention to detail. The tire and wheel package is a $1,500 to $2,000 initial upgrade for many and it’s hard to put a value on having the transmission, clutching, drive components and bodywork all built around the demands of larger tires. A CVT makes the KRX inviting for drivers of all skill levels. Front differential lock, the low power mode and all the before mentioned attributes make the KRX a terrain conquering beast. Comparably, we feel the 2020 Kawasaki KRX 1000 offers a lot of features, performance, and potential for its $20,499 price tag and is a machine that many enthusiasts should be seriously considering.

    Great job on the video folks! Love The Styling , love the size, love the build quality, love the interior, love the bed, love the interior room, love the suspension and with all that said I'd love to have it when it comes out with MORE POWER because it looks doggy. I would absolutely love to see a shootout between this, the Honda Talon, and The Wildcat XX, but my opinion it seems the Talon would have more spunk.
    With a little MORE POWER under the hood I think this would probably be the best trail rig on the market!!!

      Looks like a fun unit and should do well. I've owned two Can Ams, both the x3rs 72wide cars and sold them both after driving my buddies XX. We race class 6100 spec trophy trucks so we needed a side by side that can handle true desert pre-running. The can am fell apart all the time, has dog shit suspension geometry with massive bump steer and track width change, plus has every pivot on single shear. Picked up a new XX and couldn't be happier. Small valving change made the car a little beast over really big holes. Long story short, hopefully the Kawi is built just as strong as the XX because I want to see anything other than another Maverick running in the desert. Those piles of shit are out right dangerous with the way they are built

    I'm watching the speedy action shots of a poorly set up suspension. It looked like compression was backed off but not the rebound presumably for fear of packing, but the suspension was bouncing over stuff. Lowering the ride height in the front might help the pushing we see in corners. I'm used to my Polaris 1000S that is twitchy over 50 mph in 2 wheel drive because of its sharp handling and is a totally different machine.

    • @UTVonDemand
      @UTVonDemand  Před 4 lety +1

      Ed did not complain of the car being bouncy. He did mention wanting to lower the ride height and tune crossovers a bit. Running compression all the way soft, the suspension still didn't pack up in the whoops. we think you're right, you could definitely take some preload out. We hope to do some more tuning in the near future.

Hp is right on par with machines that have been out since the begging, and there is a company making a turbo kit if you really wanna race. The krx is a rock crawling trail blazing beast and loves the mud. The 10 gallon fuel tank takes me every where and i always feel safe with the 8 point cage. • @UTAH100
    @UTAH100 Před 4 lety +3

    Just drove this machine- many of the same trails as featured here in MOAB, Utah. It was a blast- easily the best looking UTV out there IMO with the performance to back it up.
    My WISH LIST for this machine...
    Please use a traditional transmission that will deliver more power to the ground and is impervious to water (not a CVT)
    Add 30 more HP, better glove box, better, color HD display, built in stereo and a park setting and please get rid of that gate shifter on the floor. It's not smooth- frustrating to operate. Even an electronic option would be superior.
    Add 4 point seat-belt harnesses.
    It needs better fender guards for sure. I definitely had mud/water getting into the cabin too often and I was barely in mud/water (mostly dry conditions)- I can't imagine on a wet day or being in even a shallow creek/crossings- it was an obvious issue.
    Although the above seems like a long list- this machine is still relatively class leading as is with only a few exceptions. It's price/value is also strong (good). If I lived out West it would be a toss up between this and the YXZ1000 (has a real transmission). The wider width on the East coast isn't allowed in many places but it works out there- very stable and smooth. The suspension on the KRX was incredible- I did many of those same whoops and I barely felt them- inspired a lot of confidence. The clearance was also outstanding- came down some very steep hills that abruptly ended and I didn't hit the front. It felt very solid. I also appreciated having the ability to select a crawl mode- it works great and can control you on steep descents and also limit the throttle- just gave me a sense of more control. The ability to carry a spare on the back is great. The large tires went over everything easily. Rode all day on just under 1 full tank of gas.
    BREAKDOWN....
    Suspension- Clearly it's strong suit
    Ergonomics/Looks/Cockpit, overall interior- mostly strong suit
    Transmission- I would call this it's weak point- but it worked ok
    Weight- heavier than the others, but I would almost call this a strong suit. It felt very solid and rode well, even on the road thanks in part to it's heft and longer wheel base. THe downside can be a little under-steer if pushed hard in the turns. Everything has it's trad-offs.
    Metal shields and full skid plates- Definitely noisier and heavier than plastic but offers more protection so overall it's a plus. They could add some material to deaden the sound.
    Overall performance- Strong (not the fastest with some CVT lag, but was a ton of fun for general mixed riding!)
    Value- Very Good
    Warranty- Only 6 months so not so great
    OVERALL
    This machine is great with some room for improvement. I expect they will improve future models incrementally over time. They will likely start slowly by bumping up the HP and adding larger fender flairs (easy fixes). It will likely only get better. For those in a rush, there is also the aftermarket.

      That's pretty subjective, different drivers would give different answers. Guys who don't have racing experience tend to like the active suspension machines for the confidence inspiring stability and smooth landings off big jumps.. But racers like Allen Knowles who have more experience with driving competitively tend to use body roll to their advantage. Check out the UTVonDemand 2020 Honda Talon X4 and X4 live valve first impression video because Allen explains this concept and the difference in driver experience. After that, the question becomes clutch preference, turbo vs NA machines, and which vehicle design you're personally comfortable with.. It's tuff to answer what racers in general prefer because many of them, especially in BITD and Other Pro races, are often modded beyond recognition.. There are tons of racing series and SXS options and the riding your describing I would call general use but aggressive riding.. If you're looking to race, look at the rules for series you want to race in.. That will help you narrow down your selection.. There is no single best best machine out there. Just a combination of features and compromises to get the most out of how you want to ride.

    Kawasaki needs to make this in a 60” wide version. Everything about it is great except the power, it’s just too heavy. 112 hp isn’t enough for a 2000 lb machine. A smaller and lighter 60” version would be much more sporty.

      We think if anything, it just needs to be uncorked. We have added a lot of weight to other machines in an effort to make them stronger. Here is betting that some of the RZR 1000s we have built in the past wind up as heavy as the Kawasaki. If the krx proves to be as durable as it looks we have a hard time faulting them for building it a little heavier and tougher.

      You're right, we're in bed with him, that's why we criticize the flat mid-range power, the sight line over the hood, the weight unless it proves to be durable, the fact that we wanted more bolstering in the seats, the fact that the front end pushed when you drove aggressively until we tune the suspension, the fact that the brake and gas pedal are a little clothes for people with larger feet. There is a lot to like about this machine but if you feel like we didn't criticize it then you're not paying attention. Your attention skills are poor. Get off the internet and go read a book.

    • @UTVonDemand
      @UTVonDemand  Před 4 lety +4

      Drink the Kool-Aid? Okay, we criticized the site line over the hood, we mentioned that the mid-range power was flat, that the front end pushes during aggressive driving until you tune the suspension a little bit, but the tires felt skatie at higher pressure and have some low speed chatter in the sand, we mentioned that the top speed was 68 miles per hour in stock trim, we complained that it did not come with a roof standard so it seems that we haven't drank the Kool-Aid. All of the reviews that you see are in the desert because that's where Kawasaki held the Press ride. We know that the machine is built around 31 inch tires so you can add more aggressive mud tires with no drama.. It has front differential lock and a good amount of ground clearance. The intakes are mounted high on the rear fenders. So are you complaining because you didn't see the visuals that relate to where you ride or are you unsure about what features add up to a good machine for the mud? If you are asking for a Woods test , that's fair but accusing us of drinking the Kool-Aid, that's BS. Thanks for watching and commenting.
