    This is the 316mm brake upgrade which was fitted to some Police Volvos in the early 2000s. The disc and calipers were also fitted to the XC90 so in comparison to my standard 286mm brakes, the difference will be very noticeable.

    It's better to suck out the brake fluid out of the master cylinder before bleeding the rest of the system; I learned that the hard way. There is frequently debris in the bottom. That debris can cause serious issues with the anti-lock brake system if it is flushed through the system. It's also a good idea to put some anti-seize grease on the little retaining screw to the rotor; you will be thankful that you did the next time you service the brakes. It also good to make sure that the brake bleeder is loose before mounting the caliper.

    For anyone considering this upgrade, you can also go with 328mm rotors and 336mm rotors from the 2007-2014 Volvo XC90 and XC60. Just be sure if you go with the 336mm setup that the brackets (carriers) are numbered 742 and the calipers are indeed 336mm calipers. If you end up with 336mm carriers on 316mm calipers, there won't be enough clearance over the rotor as it seems the 336mm caliper is taller (brade pads are larger as well and will not fit the smaller calipers). I had a laundry list of problems with this. In fact, the better option is probably to go with the 328mm, dual-piston caliper setup. Not only is a completely different caliper design so not as to cause compatibility confusion that you could have between the 316 & 336 configurations, but the brake pad is much larger (I'd say 40% larger than even the 336mm pad). Having run both setups now, the 328mm two-piston seems to have slightly better stopping power with better pedal feel. I hope this doesnt come off as an advertisement, but since I removed my old 336mm setup, I have a set of steering stop limiters drilled out to 14mm, a pair of rebuilt 336mm calipers loaded with ceramic pads if anyone is interested.

      Sophan Phin Interesting to know that you can use brake calibers from xc60. I checked from volvopartswebstore.com and it indeed says that same caliber can be used in xc90 (and then in s60 after modification). However the carrier is probably different in xc60 and xc90 if im not wrong. At least i couldn’t find any confirmation about that. So do you now if I buy xc60 caliber and bracket, will they fit? Another thing is that xc60 has different size wheel hub so brake rotors have to be from xc90 or you have to drill center hole larger.

      Hi, is the process of fitting dual-piston caliper (328mm rotors) from the late xc90 on first gen. S60 same as the fitting of single piston caliper from the early’s Xc90 (336mm rotors)?

      Ray Barboni from Miami No idea on precise weights but yes the upgraded caliper is noticeably heavier and it weighted up the steering slightly which I actually quite like.
      The unsprung weight isn't an issue as this braking setup is fitted as standard to some models anyway so the associated components are already designed to cope.

    In the future could you put parts numbers in description below the video... Some parts numbers I figure out just by pausing video :D i know in some videos you show parts numbers but in some not...

    • @sirobb
      @sirobb  Před 4 lety +1

      Part numbers have strict model, model year and chassis number limitations so even if the parts fits in a similar way, there's no guarantee that the part I use will fit your car.
      The videos are to show procedures which apply to hundreds if not thousands of cars so posting specific part numbers would create far more confusion than it solves.
      If you have a Volvo, just get Vida and every part number for your specific car will be at your fingertips.

    Hi mate, i really love your vids, top stuff all of them. I have sourced a couple of T5 police callipers from facebook and am planning to fit them to my V70 D5 following your install instructions. I have one question. When drilling the hub from 12mm to 14mm does it leave enough material to support the heavier calliper and extra forces involved. Does the T5 have a larger hub to support the heaver brakes or is it exactly the same part drilled out larger in the factory? Can't find any info else where about it ? Just bit worried about that those drilled out holes might fracture over time? Cheers.

    • @sirobb
      @sirobb  Před 3 lety +1

    • @sopdadope
      @sopdadope Před 5 lety

      @@sirobb Surprisingly, there's ample room for wheel weights, at least on the Volans. My earlier post minimized the mods I needed to make for the 345mm rotors to work but basically if you fit the XC90 336mm carriers to calipers from a 2004 Audi S4 and use 2008 Audi S5 345mm (drilling the top hat for the Volvo bolt pattern) it works. I also has to grind the carriers and cast shell of the caliper itself to accomodate the larger rotors. Pads are the XC90 336mm pads. Been running this setup for a year now and it works just as well as they S60R brembos while being significantly cheaper.

    Hi Volvo fans, I am considering doing a break upgrade on my 2002 Volvo V70, currently at 330K miles and still going strong. As a result of the brake upgrade, how the braking feels? In terms of braking power, pedal feel and stopping, do the new brakes feel a bit better or significantly better. Any comments or feedback on this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    • @sirobb
      @sirobb  Před 5 lety

      The 316mm brakes feel the same with normal driving and noticeably better under heavy breaking compared to my old 286mm.
      Im very happy with them.

      @@sirobb Thank you very much for your reply. I have sourced from eBay a whole set of front caliper holders and calipers from an XC90 and will be mounting this week a 336 mm disk and matching pads, ones that can still be fitted under 17 inch alloys. Calipers have been sandblasted and powder coated. New pistons and seals will be mounted so they should work fine. Thank you for the inspiration given through your channel, I have learned a lot during the past years.
      One question: the wheel turn limiter will need to be changed during the upgrade or can the old ones stay? Many thanks, Val

      In case someone is having this problem: my brakes during the past few weeks started feeling a little bit soft, despite of being aired and the fluid changed. The brake pedal was also hissing when pressed repeatedly and felt somewhat soft.
      It turns out a rubber seal from the brake servo master cylinder was leaking due to aging and replacing that solved the problem.

      If you go bigger, just bear in mind that the disc guard is really only good up to the 320mm option so a 336mm disc will overlap and probably need disc guards off an XC90.
