  • In part 3 of this series, we begin to assemble the timing components and prepare the engine for reinstallation into the chassis.
    If you are still having difficulty understanding the timing procedure for this engine, please check out this video from my friend, Brad on his channel. He does a much better job than I do explaining!

    Great series. Nice work. I'm currently tackling this job in a Edge at the shop. I got a couple hours into disassembling the engine to do it in the car like Alldata suggests before I decided I was going to drop the powertrain out like you did here. Glad I found these detailed videos. It's always nice to see it first hand before getting into a job this involved. Not always a luxury that is available. Time is money and this should help me save a lot. Thank you 👍

    Great video, I just did my 2010 flex and removed the motor for ease of doing things, took me 24 hours for my first time, your video helped build my confidence as I was nervous to do the job, the motor now is stronger than ever, mine had 189,000 and just started to leak, water pump bearings were gone, any day the motor would of blown, thanks so much

    This is the by far the best video I have seen as far as addressing the damn internal water pump on these engines. I have done about 5 now without taking the engines out, I've only seen one so far that had just a water pump seal failure. where it will leak coolant out the weep hole. The others coolant was dumping into the oil pan (complete water pump bearing failure, in which you will get a code for the phasers, fortunately customers stopped driving immediately).
    I recommend Gates water pumps, the impellar is metal and seems to be better quality than that of the motorcraft. Cloyes has really good quality timing components for these engines, that is what I use. It is not as bad as a job as you think, but this design is ridiculous. Stay away from the really inexpensive water pump/timing component kits. I have never tried one, but you don't want to have to end up doing this job twice from using crappy parts.

      My father in law and I dive in to my 12 Taurus Jan 11. We are not pulling the whole motor though. Think it can be done still, just not as easy access. All parts and etc seem to be about $500 between autozone, amazon (they have the locking tools ), and local store. Quotes were $1500 to $2150 at dealerships.

    • @canesser1
      @canesser1 Před 4 lety

      @@zachc1297 Right on, wishing you all the best in this tedious process and looking forward to hearing how it went from a DIYers perspective. My first video on this subject was from Robinsonauto's channel (this is part 1: czcams.com/video/VjMgagyP0SI/video.html ), he diagnosed the OIL leak (not coolant leak out of the water pump weep hole) and P0016 code when the factory techs had no clue. He didn't take out engine either but simply took the right front wheel and wheel well dust cover off then jacked up from under the oil pan a little to unload the right passenger side engine mount and was able to access everything excep the very top areas from underneath. He also did not use the cam locking tools but I'll definitely be getting them. He also had an itemized part number and price list and think it was just over $500 (add 30% for us hapless Canadians lol).
      If you don't already follow Ford Makuloco, he's a certified Ford tech and a wealth of excellent information and DIY step by step processes. He also had this to say about the water pump: czcams.com/video/R3-NOGZL8ms/video.html
      Been driving Fords all my life, no longer impressed with this kind of engineering and the faulty maintenance schedules for various fluids including transmissions and AWD transfer cases (look them up on Makuloco's channel, the proof is always in the pudding). A) they don't want you working on them and B) they want you buying more vehicles.

If I had this car and had a water pump leak I'd get rid of it. Seems to me this engine would never be right again.How many mechanics could there be to do what this young fellow did? Hi. Thank you for the video, this is very useful and valuable information. This is very detailed. I have questions, maybe you can comment, any thoughts... so:
    1 I have a similar engine on the Ford EDGE 2008 3.5 Duratec and I plan to replace the pump myself, I watched some yuotube videos on this engine and hope I can handle it, but I can't understand if I can do it without a special tool to hold the camshafts?! The logic of my thoughts is that I only need to replace the water pump and therefore I will remove only the first large chain, so I will not need to hold the camshafts, what is your opinion?

  • @waltchan
    @waltchan Před 6 lety +1

    Technically, Duratec 30 V6 (3.0L) is the most powerful and newest Ford FWD V6 engine you can get with water pump outside driven by belt. It was last produced for 2012 Ford Fusion and Escape. Maybe this is a highly-desirable used car now to transport your loved ones. The RWD 3.5L and 3.7L (F-150, Transit, and Mustang) are excluded from this problem, since it's a longitudinal version with its water pump located outside instead. Can you believe that?

    Who can afford this much cost for a routine maintenance item like a water pump? This video saved me a lot of cost, as were were looking at some very nice used Taurus models. Economically, a simple water pump failure would make these cars a total loss. What kind of management would approve such a design? The first time you need a water pump would be the last FORD product you ever buy.

    I really appreciate the attention to detail you provided in this video series. I am confused about the timing cover torque sequence. Stage 2: States to tighten bolts 23, 24, and 25 to 133 lb-in, Stage 5: states to tighten bolts 23, 24, and 25 to 22 lb-in plus an additional 90 degrees. My Confusion is that if the bolts have been torqued to 133 lb-in in stage 2, how do I tighten the same 3 bolts to 22 lb-in, which is 111 lb-in less than they have already been tightened? The stages do not mention loosening bolts 23, 24, and 25 once they have been tightened as instructed in stage 2? I am thankful for any response you may be able to provide.

    Would you recommend keeping this car if this happened to us? I had my car serviced at Ford, but one mechanic suggested the car will continue to break down, especially if there was antifreeze/water in the oil pan due to the water pump leak. My car over heated twice and had no fluid in. I filled it with water to hold me off till I got to the dealer. Suggestions from your experience.

    i done one before--had no issues first time doing this--just did the water pump--didnt replace phasers or chain or anything----in any case the 2nd one i did i was to confident and i really went against my better judgment and i knew there was a lot of slack on the chain guide side--but i let it go anyway like a dumbass---started the engine-ran like crap------i also did not mark the chain--i did make one mark on the RH side with dot on cam sprocket-----in any case----i took back apart----aligned the dots on cam sprockets where they should be(according to ford manual-rh @ 11 o clock and LH @ 1 o clock)--was also able to get caam holder in----in any case so got back together again and started engine and it is smooth at idle no issues--when u try to accelerate it doesnt move that well and then kinda surges----of course now i get p0016 code-----took it apart again--verified marks or where they should----its just like what the fuck????--i am wondering if a cam phaser broke???--but also no noises or knocking noises---i would think if i damaged the engine it would be misfiring and run like crap--but idle is good--has anyone experienced this?

    Goodafternoon, I am helping my friend get his 2013 ford taurus fixed. We took it to a local shop with the best reputation and they claimed it would be a 2 day job. A week has gone by and they claim they just can't get the cams to line up for the timing and its not running right. When we took the car there it was spewing antifreeze, they did a pressure test and said it was the water pump. They quoted 1800 to replace it. They now called me and said they have to replace a cylinoid or some sort making the job much more expensive. When we brought the car in it was running just fine but it was spewing antifreeze so the timing was good when we got there. Do you think this job was above this shops skill level? What are your thoughts on this? We are going to refuse to pay the extra work they have created so I am prepping to know what we are talking about when we go back in to the shop. Also is it possible they installed the chains wrong then started it which I imagine would ruin the engine? Thank you for any information :)

    WATER PUMP FAILURE - BLOWN ENGINE: (Tarus, Flex & Edge all the same) I have a 2010 Edge - I drive about 5K a year these days. A couple of months ago the water pump failed - only 65K in my Edge and I am having to replace the motor now. (really poor design by Ford) I didn't get any warning at the time of failure, water temp went high and damage was done! No "check engine" or other warning lights? Thanks Ford.

      You can, you just have to get the inner guides off. You can do so with an open end 8mm wrench and some finesse.

      Where I live RUST will trade it in for you. I had a 2003 Taurus wagon in fantastic shape mechanically, but I had to junk it because the undercarriage rotted away to nothing and wasn't safe anymore. Now I'm just hoping and praying my '08 Taurus doesn't ever need this job while we own it (only has 63k miles).

      @@nodak81 I had the same problem with my 2005 Taurus, the subframe rusted out. It only had 56,00 miles on it and it ran great. Got 400 on a trade for a 2012 Taurus limited with 80,500 miles. I did purchase a 3 year, 36,000 mile service contract which was included in the purchase price that covers the the water pump and the engine with zero deductible. It really is a beautiful car.

    • @ClientGraphics
      @ClientGraphics Před 5 lety +1

      javier yanez 250k miles is awesome as some people have had the water pump go out under 100k. Even getting to 200k without doing the water pump = time to dump the car before it goes out as it’s a minimum $1600 job and upwards of $2500 depending upon how much you replace with it.

    how can you tell the water pump was leaking from the weep hole if it's enclosed by the timing chain cover, wish you would've shown that

    • @pinpointautomotiverepair1592
      @pinpointautomotiverepair1592  Před 6 lety +1

      You're right, I should have shown that :(. The water pump weep hole has an orifice that feeds through a galley in the engine block, exiting a small port directly behind the water pump externally from the engine block. I'm sorry I didn't do a better job explaining that my friend.
