- Join me in tackling another heavy repair! In this series I address a common coolant leak on Ford 3.5 Duratec engines, the dreaded water pump leak. I show you how I go about performing this repair, which includes removal of the powertrain and replacement of all timing components. Enjoy!
You mentioned that this vehicle was engineered with servicability in mind. Remove the entire drivetrain? To change a water pump? I don't think I'll be buying that vehicle or any other that is that difficult to do what should be simple tasks. Great video as always but not a very servicable engine! Been wrenching for over 45 years, changed many a water pump, never pulled an engine to do it.
Only a illegal drugs addicts can build a so good shit masterpiece ;
Autism have conguer USA .!
Even the white house!
its not just that vehicles. any vehicles that use the same engine
A majority of my family works at the Ford plants & this B.S. is why I stopped buying Ford vehicles all together.
American vehicles are to expensive to fix & have become readily disposable especially at $1800 for a damn water pump replacement !
Thank you harbor....I have a water pump problem on my 2012 ford taurus with 234 + thousand miles on it. First estimated cost for replacement is $3100, and they'll need the vehicle for at least 2 days. I love my car too, just a great size vehicle for me..but being a GM retiree I think I'm going to have to go with the General now on my next vehicle purchase.
Captain you damn right! pull engine to change waterpump, that engineer needs flogging with a piece of 2.o wire
Unreal. I am embarrassed being an engineer. Who designed such a system? Gives engineers a bad name. Shame on that team.
I'm sure there are many excuses, but an engine has to be dropped to replace a water pump? Anyone who knows cars, knows that's BS design. How did that get though design review 1?
Ikr.? -it's amazing to me guys like Joe are willing to take half a car apart and put it back together again just replace a wear item.
Obviously this used to happen in home electronics (my area of expertise) as well. One would take tape decks or VCRs apart to replace belts, what have you. However, it wasn't like any error on the tech's part was going to endanger the users' life. There's just too much involved here.
Yep, horrible design but the whole reason he's having to do this is for a crap water pump on a five year old car. If you're going to make techs do all this for a pump you better make a damn good water pump. If you had to do this every 150K miles or something similar it would be a little more understandable but after just 5 years, thats just stupid.
Was the new homosexuals community in the revenge, trying make americans peoples angry, broke $$$, mad ,and others reasons I wanna don't tell !
They do it on purpose, try buying an air filter for your 05 ford focus, guess what you cant its a "lifetime" filter lol located behind the bumper. meaning they designed it to be throw away garbage. guess they caught too much flak or got sued because in later model ones it is replaceable. they will do what ever they can get away with. this is why i hate fords, and as a mechanic who works on fords i hate telling people how much labor is because its always over the top when its a ford.
Powertrain removal is absolutely not needed, the Taurus is one of the easiest 3.5L water pump jobs out there!
Yeah I'm researching this job since I just got my first one in the shop. Looks pretty straightforward for a timing driven WP, but I want to sure the power train needed completely removed or not.
I know this is an old comment, but can you link me to any info about how to replace it?
How about on the Explorer, or better yet the Explorer Sport with EcoBoost? Powertrain removal necessary for those?
@@snirtman7223 I know the Ford Edge 3.5 is a mother lover
@@snirtman7223 nope. Got my Explorer Sport timing cover off right now to do the water pump. U will have to unbolt the motor mount on passenger side and also lower the engine about half an inch to get the black bracket off the timing cover. 2 of the bolts are long and very difficult to get out but can be done. The oil pan is aluminum so be careful.
That is one of the toughest water-pump jobs out there. You make it look easy.
It looks easy cause he is using power tools and the lifter but in a garage it just a nightmare it will take you like 3 days working 7 hrs a day to finished
I love this video, because my daily driver is a 1952 chevy pick up. Have never owned a car newer than 1972. My dad was a strict man and told me over and over, don't let anyone work on your bicycle. Well to this day I have never hired a mechanic. I sometimes have to do a repair job on my car 3 times to get it right, but in the end save money, and never have to wonder whether the mechanic F***ed me or not. A guy once said he wished he had a truck like mine but said I wouldn't want it to break down on me in the middle of nowhere. a few weeks later the brain in his late model toyota went out. good thing he wasn't in the middle of nowhere.
As a DIYer, this is troubling! lol What a job. Excellent video editing on this one! Thanks!
Baxrok2, admittedly this isn't a good job to try in a DIY environment. I wouldnt attempt this job with the powertrain in, not for lack of access but simply because of how perfectly the timing cover must be done.
doing an engine change on a 13 interceptor.... this was really helpful! stumbled across you by accident, but all the necessary component blocks of information were there to make this job much easier (didn't have to sit and figure out how things came apart) Things go wrong with motors all the time and this kind of work needs to get done.... thanks for the vid!! and great voice over on the whole thing.
Really wanted a taurus. This just broke my heart.
I just bought a 2012 Taurus Limited. The dealer offered me a service contract that covers the water pump and a lot of other major repairs with zero deductible included in the purchase price. All I have to pay for is fluids and filters. The car has 80.500 miles on it. I don't know if the coolant has ever been changed, so I'm going to replace it. On April 2020, Ford approved the use of Motorcraft VC-13G Yellow Coolant as a direct replacement for Motorcraft VC3B Orange Coolant, and I'm going to put it in. Maybe the water pumps will last longer with the yellow coolant. I had a 2005 Taurus which I bought new and had it for 15 years. Great car. The 2012 is a much bigger car than the 2005 model. It is a nice car.
Damn man, remember when Duratec's had the water pump on the top of the engine driven off the cam? Now that made for an easy change.
Laughs in panther platform. I replaced my water pump in late December on my 2011 town car for preventive maintenance to a "Gates" brand. it already started weeping coolant while parked. ordered a Motorcrraft replacement. it gets here Friday. comparing the amount of labor of to this engine to do a water pump swap. all I have to say is "long live the panther platform".
He continues to praise Ford engineers whilst pulling a motor to replace a WATER PUMP!!! Troll of the century.
Facts
I do these water pumps in car, but yes the designer is a butthole
@@tuf86sami how hard is it? im looking for info about doing this in car.
The main issue doing these in car is making certain that you have good wobble sockets and raise the engine high enough to get the timing cover out and back in without destroying your new silicone. Also I usually let the sealant sit 10 minutes or so to tack before attempting to reinstall the cover.
@@themfknightrider420 if you want, get me your email address and I can send you pics and further details on how to do it in car
Great job Joe! You did a fine job with the hot wrench. Eric will be the first to tell you even the best will nick a thread. :D
It can be done in the car, just very tight. Paid my mechanic $700 and supplied him with new Ford pump $123.
I own a 2013 Taurus Limited, I di like the car, cant stress enough the importance of timely coolant changes, 50K or less is optimal, not the recommended 100K. Water pump failures are fairly rare, but it sucks if it happens to you. This engine is also used in The Flex and Edge
Damn. I got a '13 limited with 30K miles. Recently had it serviced and it's running strong. But the Ford warranty has just expired and watching this scares the crap out of me. Is this really a rare kind of failure? Should I be worried? Anything I could do as preventative measures?
I have a '13 Limited with about 72K. I just ran into this issue and lead me to this video. The mechanic I took my car to won't even touch it.
I agree on more frequent coolant changes. Also, when these pumps have a catastrophic failure, it because of bearing failure. Bearings do not like dirty oil. I always change the oil and filter at 3,000 miles or one year, which ever occurs first. Oils breakdown over time. It's much cheaper to change the oil than repairing major parts of the engine.
I like the KSE playing in the background. Wish the shop I worked at would play this music.
That's crazy, reminder to self. Never buy one of these 😂 great work.
Hey you have to like them a little, job security!!!
It just depends which side of the service counter you're on.
Triangle Diagnostics Work for a shop that specializes Beemers and Benz'....thats security.
The mech a nic it’s crazy expensive....I dropped like $2300 to replace mine ☹️ last year....
@@pinpointautomotiverepair1592 I have the same car and I have that same issue i wish u lived in Atlanta so I could pay u instead of ford... u made that shit like it was a walk in the park great video tho all 3 segments well detailed
Creating a lot of work for yourself pulling the whole engine. I’ve seen this job done from the front of the engine in less time.
On the ford explorer forums one guy took it in and the dealer did not remove the engine to change out the water pump. A couple of people on the mazda forum have done this as well without engine removal, they also replaced the chains , guides and the vvt solenoids while they had it apart
u can do it with out taking the engine out its just easier
All I can say is wow, most difficult water pump I've ever changed
We have had a run of these coming in on the police interceptor version. So far they have all gone back to the dealer because they were still under warranty. I take it yours was leaking from the weep hole behind the alternator..
Pico Boo, thats correct good sir.
The issue is because people refuse to change the coolant every 20000 miles.full flush can prolong it..I have done 30 of these including mkz,Taurus and mkx
And oil to! To keep the chains nice and lubed!
This is excellent. I have to replace the front cover seals and valve cover gaskets on my daughters 3.0, this looks similar.
Have you ever done this job and cracked the timing cover or missed the timing by a tooth? I am with you. Pull it all out BRAH!
My mechanic replaced my waterpump with havibg to remove tge egibe. Removed timing cover replaced waterpump. Timing chain guides. Oil pump..all fluids belts plugs. Car is 2014 Taurus police with 200,000 kms (120,000miles). Total cost was 4,000.oo cdn about 2500 USD no exhaust to drive train disconnect rewuired. Took about 16 hours..including all coolant transmission oil and PTU fluid changes. Car runs perfect.
So they put a maintenance part behind a lifetime part...plus tons of disassembly on top of that. Nice work but this really makes me hurt for the owner....does Ford really think water pumps are that reliable as to bury it?
Ford have became a real piece of human feces. Avoid Ford automobile !
I had done this but was upset to find out that you needed special cam locking tools to set timing and the factory chain didn't have timing marks
How about that?
Were is Donal trump to make americans great again!!!????
Put those designer in prison for life with theirs family !!!
2010 sel in the garage. 6 hrs and done in frame. No timing tool needed either.
They are building cars today like washing machines, they don't want them to be reliable for years. They want new car buyers to not hold on to them for too long and things like this will encourage them to trade them in for another new one when the warranty expires. And by making it so complicated to repair, it discourages the average backyard mechanic from fixing it himself and bring it to a dealer or buy another car. Cars that last a long time is good for the person that owns it but not so good for the economy, that's the way they look at it.
You nailed it Dave. My Dad said 40 yrs ago they make cars to sell not fix. How right he was.
I changed a water pump on 2013 explorer. Thankfully I didn’t need to drop the engine like this. Didn’t have to disconnect the ac hose. Other than this I like these 3.5’s.
You know what I was in the market I'm getting a 2016 Ford Taurus SHO but after watching this video I changed my mind not unless it has a real good warranty
Nothing simple with these new engines. Glad I still have old trucks
Just had one put on summer of 2018 now I need another one!!!!!
I'll take replacing a BMW water pump any day over this. This is the only way to do it though unfortunately.
"Serviceability in mind"?!... Are you kidding? You're pulling the engine to do a water pump bro. Love the vid but God damn..
REMINDER!! You do not have to drop the drivetrain to do this job.. while it may be a lot easier to do, I do them all the time inside the vehicle at the ford dealer.. saves time.
How would you accomplish this exactly?
That's a crazy amount of work man for a leaking waterpump. Hope you don't see them to often😂😂
Technically, Duratec 30 V6 (3.0L) is the most powerful and newest Ford FWD V6 engine you can get with water pump outside driven by belt. It was last produced for 2012 Ford Fusion and Escape. Maybe this is a highly-desirable used car now to transport your loved ones. The RWD 3.5L and 3.7L (F-150, Transit, and Mustang) are excluded from this problem, since it's a longitudinal version with its water pump located outside instead. Can you believe that?
this guy's a Ford engineer, he says designed with serviceability in mind.
Unreal how he compliments ford so much while taking half this car apart for a waterpump replacement..ridiculous amount of work and I would love to meet the engineer for this engine so I could whoop his ass..I'm sure his father is proud..
Awesome video Joe. I freakin love a good subframe job. Being able to get it right there in front of your face, sittin on a stool or whatever. I havn't gotten a hold of one this new but the older taurus/ five hundred and freestyles were definitely well thought out to bring everything down. Got 2 bad jaspers back to back 3 or 4 years ago and got super acquainted lol.
Brandon F, me too. Its a cake walk IMO.
Awesome video just kept us from underbidding a job where the customer knew it should cost way more 👍
Is it a normal occurrence to change a failed water pump on a 5 year old car? Seems like a mess just to replace something that shouldn't have failed in such a short amount of time. You nearly took it down to a short block just for a water pump! Nice work by the way, very professional.
You don't have to drop the engine. But is faster. I would said you save couple hours.
Mr. Henry Ford must be revolting in his coffin !
He didn't even believe in water pumps.
More reason to keep a car from the 80's and early 90's. All water pumps fail, and to have to tear down the whole engine is criminal. You can't tell me Ford didn't know this.
$$$$
Cars from the 80s and the early 90s have other issues. Smog components failing, underpowered due to new emissions technology, bad head gaskets, crappy, cheap interior components that rattle, etc. The quality on the new Fords is light years ahead of the cars they made 25 years ago. I've owned Fords from both eras.
Totally stupid. I sold Fords for 20 years, glad I'm retired. Now I know why I see so many of these cars sitting in peoples yards for sale. Total junk. $1400.00 for a water pump replacement. Shame on Ford.
Not to mention once these pumps go you have no idea and then bam your engine is done
This is why I’ll stick to Crown Victorias. Only Taurus I would get is the 2.0 EcoBoost. If it’s a 5th gen Explorer, it would be a 2.3 Ecoboost. This is the reason why many police departments in Texas especially rural ones are buying Chevy Tahoes now.
How different is the engine bay in the Ford Flex? Water pump can be changed with the engine in the car. While removing the drivetrain may provide more clearance when removing timing chain cover and the timing chain, is it truly necessary?
Might as well get car spark plugs change too since you got easy access.
What do you charge to replace the water pump out of curiosity
You do not have to pull the engine. This guy is crazy! Or bored....
Really?
I am the lucky owner of those Ford Taurus SE 2013, Just watching this video made me cringe as each parts and other plastic items are being removed. Reading the comments below is true. I had a major coolant leak out of the blue ( it was pretty bad). Luckily I keep certain things in my trunk in case of emergency (coolant, tools, oil, etc..)I was very lucky that I paid $800 and some change mind you in CA. The mechanic fucked up on the labor hours, didn't charge me for the special tool and gave me a discount since I lost a day's wage on the miscalculation.
I'm glad I still had my peddle hopper '94 Ford Aspire but it needed a muffler (it was very loud) to use till my 2013 is fully repaired (water pump). The whole engine had to be removed just to access the water pump and it took him a week 10 hours plus (had other clients). I crossed my finger as I moved out of CA. to WI. by driving. Still running but the engine isn't the same. He did a great job. I just blame the poor engine design and lack of space.
Great Video..if I knew this would be a hassle and high cost I would not have purchased this vehicle. Buyer's remorse.
Try save $5000.00 dollares to be ready . Towing, parts, labor, rental car. Etc. The Ford nightmares!!!!
I wish I had known I still owe 17,000 on my 2013 taurus and my pump went out the other day
@@Tallboi87 Damn. I got a '13 limited with 30K miles. Recently had it serviced and it's running strong. But the Ford warranty has just expired and reading stories like yours scares the crap out of me. How many miles did yours have when this happened? I am not even sure how common this failure is.
@@MegaEriable 134,000
@@MegaEriable your Taurus is still quite young
OK, please explain this to me. You said this is a well designed engine BUT you need to remove the entire drive train from the car in order to change a part which eventually fails on every car ever made namely the water pump. I could do this in 35 minutes on my GM 3800 at a cost of about $50. In 235,000 miles I changed the water pump 4 times which I think would be fairly average. Here you've got a multi thousand dollar job but even worse the coolant easily mixes with the oil to form a deadly goo that can easily destroy an engine if not immediately repaired. HOW THE HELL IS THAT A WELL DESIGNED ENGINE?
I have heard people do this repair in car.... would you have more room in an explorer? Have you done it in car before?
You don't know yet. Those Ford waters pumps even have a life span of 70 k miles.
Trash engines; cars for junk yards
A 2013 with a water pump failure? How many miles did the vehicle have on it when you did this job?
Colin D that’s what I wanna kno. I have a 2011 102k on it. No issues
@@QthAgR8 Looks like it is in good condition probably less than 100k

Thomas EXOVCDS, sipping one right now!
Waiting for part 2. Nice work btw!
This water pump replacement alone is about 1500 in nyc
Eric O's MeeMaw probably has some good tips for this job that she has taught him.
His mee maw? Whats that?
Nice work. I have just a quick question for you. What would you think would be a good way to go about this if you're working at home without a lift? Dropping the powertrain is clearly the quickest and easiest way, but I I seriously doubt that you'll be able to lift the body high enough to get the engine from under the car. What do you think?
Ian Johnson, to be completely honest with you I would not attempt this repair in vehicle. Not because the timing components are hard to access, but because of the difficulty in successfully installing the timing cover. The basket is fully silicone, and trying to get it between the body and engine and installed properly would be extremely difficult to do without smearing the sealant and risking a leak.
Is this the first car I swap a water pump on because I don’t understand how u are praising “ ford engineers did a really wonderful job with keeping service in mind”
Thank you, just another reason I will stick with Toyotas.
Wow Ford sure does have a knack for not making replacing common wear items "easy". My 2002 Suzuki XL-7 V6 also has a water pump behind the timing cover...quoted labor time is over 14 hours to replace hahaha. But hey, it's still on the original one so I can't complain ;)
Lets hope it lasts buddy! Otherwise you'll be doing a series like mine 😂
The design sucks true. BUT if you're going to do something stupid like that then make damn sure you've designed the water pump for the space shuttle so that the job doesn't have to be done for 150,000 miles. Designing a shitty water pump and putting it into this precarious position is utterly indefensible.
Get rid of that trash !
Your time will came. Get rid off of timing junk !
Hey Man! Great job here. Ive got a question I was hoping you could answer for me. I have the 2014 Ford Taurus I did an engine swap on, its got the 3.5L engine and the exact same thing was put in, but I'm getting terrible gas mileage, before the swap I was averaging 10-11L/100KM combined and after the swap its 18-19.9L/100KM. Any idea what the problem could be?
What's the reason you removed the engine? All data does not suggest this at any point for water pump replacement?
This video is probably aimed at other mechanics who have a shop at their disposal. Not a job for shadetree mechanic. Could be a slow week at his shop so this method keeps them busy.
@@beezertwelvewashingbeard8703 good techs don't waste time. Time is money. It's completely unnecessary to remove the engine strictly for water pump replacement. Speaking from a professional standpoint.
The editing has improved, nice work.
Where do you get a set of those various orange hose end and fitting plugs that will stop fluid leaking while you work?
Nevermind, saw the answer below.
What's book time for the job if the car was 10-15 years old it may not be worth doing
Nice work. Does look easy
This is no accident it is meant to be a car killer, planned obsolescence at its finest ! another customer for Toyota!
Is it a good design, no, it’s terrible, but it isn’t the end of the world. After reading some of the comments, I would hate to see how some of you guys behave when you have to deal with a serious issue.
If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. If you have it and it breaks, fix it. Don’t want to deal with it, sell it and get something else.
could you put a link to the caps you used for the coolant hoses? thanks
Doesn’t the engine get ruined once that pump inside blows?
How many miles this vehicle has? That way I know more or less when my water pump is about to go out.
First of all I'd like to say what a great video series on the Taurus water pump replacement. Second of all, is it at all possible to do this without pulling the engine?

I never pull the engine. U can have this done in 8 hours in chassis
why you have to take the entire engine out, is their a away to do it without taking the engine out
And here I thought that pulling supercharger off my audi a6 to do thermostat was an inconvenience. Welp. Did it in like maybe 4 hours, and replaced water pump / coolant temp sensor while at it. Wouldn't want to drop an engine in my garage to do a water pump...
$1500-ish to change a water pump. Not my car.
InsideOfMyOwnMind labor can be $2500-$3000 for where im from. but this video WAY over-sells it. the motor does not need to be dropped, ive done this without doing so
"Serviceability in mind" Are you nuts!?!?!!! You are pulling the engine to replace a water pump. GM puts their V6 water pump external, and belt driven. When THEIR pump fails, it won't take the engine with it.
I have a 2013 Flex. I've already done the power take-off unit post warranty and am waiting for this treat to bite me in the ass. I love the Flex but I hate the POS drive train. I have had a number of Fords but the Flex is the last straw. Never again.

That was not bad if you have access to a lift it would be a horse of a different color without. Will you start posting videos again?
And this is why the idiots who design and engineer the cars should be forced to work on their masterpieces. I bet if the were forced, automobiles would be easier to repair.
Frank Gonzalez, Honestly I don't mind these too much. Not the smartest place for a waterpump, no, but the amount of work that went into making this engine extremely tech friendly to service is amazing IMHO.
They mostly be put to face a fired squad altogether with all theirs family members.
It takes roughly 5 hours for me to do one of these water pumps lol there are so many people on CZcams making these seem like there a nightmare when in reality they're pretty simple

May I ask what is the Torx or the allen bit size to take off the cam phaser?
I have a 2011 taurus 3.5l. Took to ford garage to have new water pump installed. Car has 70,000 miles and drives fine, but is leaking coolant a little out wheap hole. Mechanic called today and said needs new engine. Said there were shavings due to water pump failure. Is this possible? Does this sound right? Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks
Triangle diagnostics
I doubt this is true. Generally a leak out of the weep hole is due to a failed inside ring gasket on the pump and not the water pump bearing itself.
I would get a second opinion from a reputable garage. It is likely they would rather put an engine in than attempt to service the chains due to the complexity of the job.
Triangle Diagnostics I'm going in tomorrow in person to look at it. It's at a ford dealership service center. He said bearing failed and gouged inside. If this is true, wouldn't cleaning out debris and installing new pump be ok? I wouldn't think gouging would matter much on cooling system?? Your thoughts? Thanks a million
Glock79, did they actually tear it down to look at it? If not than they can't for certain say what is going on. I've never personally repaired one of these where the bearing has failed, though I have heard of it happening and most often people replace the pump without issue. Most of the pumps I've replaced on these have been external leaks such as in your case.
You give Ford engineers way to much credit. A smart engineer would never of put a internal water pump
