This just shows you how masterful Raul Julia was. Any other actor would have made this goofy. In Julia's hands this is powerful, dramatic and hilarious
@@ChaNnArD-mD I think Luis Guzman did alright. But to do Gomez, you need to have a bodily screen presence and overact the part, dramatizing even the mundane. Raul was a master at that.

The OG, John Astin, showed the fun, relaxed, loving and devil-may-care side to the character. Oscar Isaac, who voiced Gomez, put his own spin while keeping him true to Raul Julia’s portrayal as the benchmark. Yeah my mom is an actress and I've seen her do many plays, and it always seems like the comedy is harder to get right than the drama. Comedy relies on minutiae of timing. Also you can't laugh at your own funniness. Or smirk when you're playing a funny line straight. I think the most inspiring and memorable performance I remember on film is from comedy, Jim Carey in Liar Liar. He's good in dramatic roles, there he brings the drama to the comedy in a great way. Making comedy that makes us feel. He should've gotten an award for that.
