This is one of my favourite Uncle Fester moments. The other one is when he hears the police have arrived and his immediate response is "THEY'LL NEVER TAKE ME ALIVE!!"
Itˋs funny too, in the Episode Morticias Romance 2, who Uncle fester played Ophilia and Gomez stated that he doesnˋt want to marry her. And his Reaction is so funny
I just realized, on top of Fester insisting he'd shoot him in the back; Gomez an expert fencer and marksman would let Fester who is less experienced in the trades fight his battle for him.
To be fair, if duels are about victory going to the "swiftest, the cunningest, the deadliest" I would probably also decide that shooting my nemesis in the back would qualify me as the undisputed winner. Getting into a situation that has a probability of me getting hurt or killed is not cunning, nor particularily deadly, especially not when compared to the option of shooting someone in the back... as for swiftness, well, I took the initiative and shot him before he shot me, didn't I?
@@orangedalmatian Then I'd be a living coward and the chivalrous guy died with his honour and ideals intact. I can only pray that the other guy, in his dying moments, thought his chivalry was as valuable to him as my life is to me. I'm actually reminded of a story I read once about an old fencing master who's having a pint down at the pub. There he's confronted by a big, strong, arrogant youth who mocks him and boastfully tells his friends that he could easily defeat the decrepid old master in a duel. The old master accepts this challenge and tells the youth that they can have a one-on-one duel in a back alley, just the two of them, mano a mano, right then and there. The youth follows the old master out into the alley, but when the old man turns around he angrily points towards the alley entrance behind the youth and scolds the kid for breaking the rules of their engagement by bringing his friends along with him; they can have their duel once the youth has told his friends to go back into the pub again. When the kid turns around to look, the old man takes his head off from behind. The old fencing master then goes back to the tavern, picks up his beer, and tells the kid's friends he taught their friend a lesson in fencing that he won't soon forget. Moral: Old fencing masters don't get that way by making themselves easy to kill.
@@GrahamChapman That is an interesting story. And I guess the whole 'honour vs life' dilemma has been an age old dynamic, it really just depends on the individual's priorities. I guess in a way, Cowardice by definition is the act of valuing one's life over their convictions or pride. Whether that's a bad thing or not is more a matter of context and cultural perspective.
@@orangedalmatian Eh, you'd have to do a lot more to qualify as a "coward" in my eyes than merely valuing your life above convictions or pride. (Though it also depends on _what_ "convictions" we're specifically talking about here; petty convictions _should_ be abandoned in a life-or-death situation imo, but higher values must not... If you pull shit like sending innocent non-combatants into battle in order to give yourself some extra time to run away then I'm obviously not going to be all too keen on forgiving that kinda bullcrap.) For the most part though, I find that "coward" is just the taunt that the fool and/or brute resorts to when they realize that though they may be skilled or strong enough to win against their adversary, they're not _smart_ enough to win against them, and feeling that their foe employing guileful, pragmatic cunning is unfair they resort to whining and banking on them calling their opponent a "coward" for defeating them using cunning instead of strength and/or skill will provoke their opponent into attempting to win on the fool's/brute's terms... Personally, I feel that if I was confronted with a situation that could either allow me to stay alive for another day to protect the things that I hold dear, then I find that preferable to dying an avoidable death over petty chivalry which would leave me unable to protect those things, and people who value their chivalry over the things they'd put their lives on the line to protect cannot be particularily virtuous people in the first place, (I mean, would _you_ care about being chivalrous if the lives of innocents were at stake?) so calling me out on shooting them in the back just wouldn't feel very self-aware of them to me.

Not to mention that Jackie Coogan was the child actor with Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton.
