    DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
    Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth.
    For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent. I just like examining popular tournament formats.

      Pokémon trainer Nate maybe they’re just bad at sceptile. He generally wants to be at mid range but it’s matchup-dependent. To get in on sceptile, just move slow and block for the most part. If he throws the 2 seeds that have a delayed hit, block the delayed hit. If he does the ranged grab that goes along the ground, you can press down light or up heavy or just jump to stop it. If he does that short jump and shoots seeds or puts out vines, you should counter + dash cancel since both moves have a lot of end lag
      I say maybe they’re just bad because he’ll lose to anyone that has decent projectiles if he’s really far away. He needs to be at mid range to command counter or command grab safely

      @@xxcrying-in-the-bathroom-o5595 You know what makes me more annoyed, in sword and Shield everyone got nasty plot. But only the gen 1&7 starters were added to the game, and even if they were added now, if gamefreak didn't show update their movepool in the beginning it doesn't matter. 145 special attack while being great for most Pokemon, isn't enough for sceptile Because he lacked Draco meteor, and his primary stab lowered his special attack. His ability is also really bad. His number one weakness aside from being walled hard, is it's lack of power.

    Honestly, I think calling Sceptile "below-average" doesn't really fit its context and place across the generations. Simply "average" would be a better signifier, as while it has never really shared a place with the OU meta-defining mainstays, it has always had a place in UU at least - which puts it well above a huge percentage of the roster - has always had great elements, and has had short times in the spotlight.
    More generally, I think we need to stop calling every single OU Pokemon "amazing" or "pretty damn good" and then calling anything below that - UU or otherwise - "below average."

      I agree. We really need to stop treating UU like a bad word now. This isn’t Gen 1-3 anymore where UU was the realm of the mediocre. Nowadays, with power creep getting more reckless than ever with Mega/Ultra Beast monsters running around, UU is actually becoming the new standard. RU and below are average/below average, and it’s only a matter of time before RU becomes standard.

      @ApieceofOnion Před 6 lety

      leonardo ripalda That is because it was only until recently where they decided to outright ban Arena trap/Shadow tag from standard competitive formats (ie. OU and below)
      That is why talking about his competitive influence is quite important. He had a huge impact in gen 5 as a Weather counter (because of his ability to trap and kill any weather setter) and with his gen 7 buffs (which seems small but turned out to be quite devastating) it was enough to push him over the limit which wouldn't have been as devastating on just about any other pokemon. With low BSTs and decent stat spread but with a great ability and effective movepool, he makes for a very interesting case of what makes for good Pokemon design.

    • @pepeknight
      @pepeknight Před 6 lety

      ApieceofOnion Dugtrio didn't really get buffed that much in Gen 7. 20 additional attack and Z-moves are nice, but not really game changing on such a frail mon. What pushed Dugtrio over the edge was how powerful its potential allies could be, especially with a playstyle like Stall and a mon like Zard-Y that could decimate teams as long as counters were removed. They aren't overpowered on their own, but with Dugtrio trapping and eliminating said counters allowed them to run wild.

    • @ApieceofOnion
      @ApieceofOnion Před 6 lety

      MD3 Fan
      Wait what? I don't think you understand the fact that extra attack is EXACTLY what a frail mon wants. What always made Dugtrio underwhelming is the fact that for a Pokemon that was SUPPOSED to function as a frail revenge KILLER, it lacked the KILLING part of that title. While I understand that the prominence of Stall and the nerfs to priority in this iteration of the meta-game does allow for Dugtrio's niche to shine more than it used to, (although we cannot forget his prominance in the gen 5 meta as a true all-rounder weather counter) Dugtrio's BIGGEST problem was always his lackluster attack stat and a 20 point buff is pretty big in that regard.

Look at Raichi, OU for doubles, with sucky stats, just because of its support moves and Lightning rod ability.

    • @Shenaldrac

      My point was that, given the dozens of videos and the footage of battles shown in them, some pokemon are seen regularly, such as Scizor, Jirachi, Gengar, Suicune, Garchomp, Salamence, etc. Even if those pokemon did not already have videos on them, one could make a fairly accurate guess as to whether they are good or not based on whether they're often seen in competitive battle footage. Even if someone's a complete rube and doesn't really understand what makes a pokemon good in terms of stats and movepool, they probably can tell that Farfetch'd ,for example, wasn't very good since it's never seen in any of these videos, and if it was good people would be using it.

    The most success I’ve had with Sceptile competitively was in Gen 5, though I don’t remember if it was RU, UU, or OU. If I had to guess it was UU. It was a Swords Dance set with Leaf Blade, Rock Slide, and Flying Gem Acrobatics. With Unburden it became the fastest thing alive and it hit super hard after an SD. RIP to the type gems though, I can’t use this set anymore.
    I love Mega Sceptile’s design but I just wish it was better. I think having a better ability or higher physical attack would’ve helped a lot, it’s physical movepool is so much better. Lightning Rod was clearly chosen with VGC in mind, but it’s bot very useful for singles. I would’ve much preferred something like Tough Claws or Sheer Force

    Gen 7 Sceptile sits in NU, Mega Sceptile is still in UU.
    Sceptile is proof that even the coolest Pokemon with fast speed and decent stats can still not be very good. Still fared better than Meganium, but nothing great.
    And another thing. Sceptile still doesn’t have a good set up move. It doesn’t even get Work Up or Growth.

    Actually due to the physical/special split, one of sceptile's best moves - leaf blade - now ran on its lower attack stat. This may have hurt it as leaf storm couldn't be used multiple times without switching and the other grass attacking moves just weren't as good. If it had a higher physical attack stat it may have been really good - one glance at its movepool does say this.

      To me the boost it needs is even less dramatic
      Give it Thunderbolt and Earth Power (maybe Ice Beam if you are generous, but I can see why they wouldn't give it to him). It gives all the coverage it needs to succeed and with its stats and already existing movepool I can see it do a few appearances in OU as an outsider, because with Leaf Storm, Earth Power, Thunderbolt and Focus Blast/HP Fire (depending on who you want to hit for more damage) it can easily clean or threaten stall, the more you think of what it can touch very hard the better it gets. A few examples : it destroys Rotom Wash with Leaf Storm, Focus Blast pierces through non AV Ttar, earth power hurts Magearna and we don't even talk about Heatran, it touches Toxapex with its coverage and it can destroy both Ferrothorn and Kartana with HP fire as well as threatening Serperior, though you should be wary of Glare. And don't forget that I am only talking about potential outsider presence in OU here, it still has an incredible Match Up in UU as well

    Honestly sceptile in its original form is pretty good. It had two unique abilities overgrow which boosted both grass type move when its health is low and unburden which doubled its speed after eating a berry. Its move pool is amazing 2, swords dance, dragon claw, focus blast, dragon pulse, iron tail, Leaf storm but the best one id say is leaf blade. After a swords dance boost, leaf blade also has a unique second ability that causes critical hits, pokemon like tyranitar, aggron and rhyperior dont stad a chance against it since sceptile can use focus blast and those pokemons special defence and weakness to fighting type moves make it a great wall breaker and with iron tail it can basically take down almost every fairy type and it also makes the pokemon lose defense after being hit by it. Even powerful fairy and water type pokemon like mylotic and azumaril can get one shot by a leaf blade after a swordsdance boost

      @@EE-ne3qn Both Thunderpunch and Earthquake are physical moves, which doesn't mix well with Sceptile's bad base Attack. On the contrary, the special version - Thunderbolt and Earth Power - would've been great for Sceptile as they are SP ATK, which Sceptile would've appreciated. The split in Physical and Special fked up Sceptile because most of Sceptile's coverage moves are mostly physical, which Sceptile doesn't have a high base ATK to take advantage of.

      @@EE-ne3qn leaf storm has the drawback of -2 special and focus blast is called focus miss for a reason. The loss of HP means that Sceptile only has 3 types that use its higher SPATK: grass, dragon, and fighting, 2 of which have huge drawbacks and the 1 which only has a BP of 85. Heck, Sceptile only has 1 boosting move for its SPATK: Work Up. Its physical side gets Work Up as well, but it also has Swords and Dragon Dance. My argument is that Sceptile has lackluster coverage in its SPATK, so I’m not sure what the point of your reply was. I even noted the first time that EQ was physical.
