- Hi all Wolf Lord Rho here!
Today we discuss the lost chapter of the Soul Drinkers being reborn with the Ultima founding... into a Primaris chapter!
Spoiler Warning to begin the events we are discussing today are from the novel "Traitor by Deed" by Ben Counter. As always I really recommend you read the story for yourself first. As that's the best way to enjoy the lore, for yourself. Not only that, we help to support the great Games Workshop and Black Library. Because without them, we don't have this amazing lore to talk about! Link: www.blacklibrary.com/warhamme...

They'll be fine. Just keep a count of the Chapter Master's legs.
I almost spit out my drink, your I caught me just right with that one 😂

Guilliman specifically told Cawl NOT to make traitor legion primaris. But fortunately for Cawl, (and unfortunately for the Imperium) he found a loop hole...
What loophole was it? Serious question😁
@@treasurecave431 Some loyalist Chapters may have come from traitor gene stock to begin with, like the Blood Ravens. The Soul Drinkers share Emperor's Children's colors even though they claim to be Dorn's descendants, and the last gene stock audit done while they were in trial showed that they didn't come from Dorn's stock (or at least not the majority of them), raising suspicion. So Cawl could have created traitor primaris by specifically choosing those Chapters of traitor ancestry to make primaris for.
The loophole would be “make Primaris from traitor chapter stock”.
@@andrewsuryali8540 since I read The Great Work I have a sinking feeling all this Cawl’s shenanigans will eventually bite him in the ass , and he’s too pompous and full of it to see it coming.
@@battle-brotherthiel1563 Nah, he'll be okay. What could go wrong? Look, the Blood Ravens already got their primaris and they look so happy.
Valrak is going to have to see a doctor after this.
I'm kind of bummed they are bringing them back. They had such a neat storyline that wrapped up so neatly
Absolutely love the return of the Soul Drinkers. The storyline possibilities are so exciting. So many unanswered questions about the mysterious origins of the chapter leads to a phenomenal stage of anticipated intrigue and adventure. This is a guaranteed classic of lore yet to be unveiled.
@@martingrimes1215 they did kind of cover the origins in the book the was print to order then later released as a hard cover. I suck at spelling but its the name of the "warrior poet" that wrote their doctrine (which is an amazing book if you haven't read it). Part of the excitement is that it stayed mysterious though. I really hope they don't answer what happened.
Also on a personal note aside from the story thread implications. I have a deep hate of the primaris and I dont like them tainting my favorite series.

YESYESYES!!!! THEY'RE BACK BABY
The optimist in me hopes they stay loyal, kind of like the loyalist traitor legion members.
The cynic in me hopes that they kick ass well when it goes to shit
When I first saw the soul drinkers I thought they were an emperors children successors.
Same.
The Soulspear and the shared history kept by both Crimson and Imperial Fists prove that the Soul Drinkers were in fact Dorn's descendants, or at least some of them were. So originally they must have been a Fists successor. After Daenyathos it seems that the majority had a different source of gene-seed.
Their colours kinda scream papa/momma Fulgrim was here.
@@andrewsuryali8540 Their geneseed tests prove they weren't from the Imperial Fists line. The Soulspear is gene locked. The Souldrinkers could use it. Meaning the Soulspear is not an Imperial Fists artifact. The Souldrinkers are from traitor or lost legion genestock.
Soul Drinkers were such a fun and interesting chapter. Ben Counter is a good writer. I remember smashing out the whole Soul Drinkers Omnibus in a night when I was a kid. Finished the first Space Wolf omnibus the same weekend too. Both excellent reads.
What was the name of the totally-not-emperor's-children primaris "sons of Dorn" chapter?
Sons of the Phoenix. ?..?...?
@@Duppyman695 yes exactly, thank you good sir
The imperial truth and the imperial church are completely different animals.
Soul Drinkers were the first chapter of space marines i got into book-wise. Love them!
Me too love them so much good to see them back.
The spider bois are the best
I think it would be cool if the last 3 Soul Drinkers reappeared to save the Primaris Soul Drinkers like a sudo Legion of the Damned.
Next Primaris reboot; The Astral Claws!
Everyone deserves a reboot, so long as it involves primaris... right?
I don't know how smooth that'll go down. Seeing as how Huron Blackheart is still running around.
Honestly, I hope that they meet up with either that Imperial Fist Captain and see the memorialized names of the Soul Drinkers on the Phalanx and learn the story that way. Or meet with Sister Aescarion and learn it that way. It would be so fucking cool to read.
Wouldn't the parent Chapter be informed of their existence? I'm thinking of the Salamanders being told - they sent Chaplains to their Ultima successors to teach them about the Promethian Cult.
Even in death the Soul Drinkers still serve, reborn anew.
it would be really cool to hear your take on how different the primarchs would be when they come back. Would the Lion be a broken man if he saw the state of his beloved legion? Would Vulkan see the way the inquisition operates and hate every part of it? Would Dorn get upset at how Gulliman is running thing? personally, I have a theory that Russ is in the warp hunting shards of magus's soul, to make up for what he did to his brother, then come back once fused with the shards as a kinda Odin-like psyker-russ, to sit on the golden throne instead of the emperor (like magus was meant to) and allow the emperor to reform. all the differences they would have, and how they would interact - man, that would be a cool video
Lion had no love for his Legion. He had pride in them, but by and large they were just his tools. His attitude towards his gene-sons actually most resembled the Emperor's attitude towards his Primarchs. Lion would look at his scattered Legion, get briefed by Azrael, then praise them for being smart, sneaky boys and discreetly reactivate the Dark Angels Legion under Guilliman's nose.
I love Russ as an Odin like figure
Lukas would be an interesting character to bounce off of allfather Russ
I hope that this is the prelude to a bigger story where its discovered that several chapters have gene seed belonging to excommunicated chapters.
Just got my first Marines, and didn't want to go blue or red. So primed them purple thinking that purple was splitting the difference. Then I stumbled upon the soul drinkers! I swear it was a sign from the void or something. The lore is awesome I feel so fired up to play them and can't wait to the weekend to start painting the rest of the colours to bring my drinkers to life.
For Freedom and the Emperor!!!! By the gods I love the Soul Drinkers...in my canon and my warband they live on and fight on for freedom..
I loved the souldrinkers series and I think it ended really good but this 'rebirth' kinda spits in the face of that because they are now the souldrinkers only in name and heraldry and no longer the chapter we love... I wish they stop already with this ultima founding, they done enough damage...
Great Video as always!
I am a Dark Angels player and I love my Chapters Lore, but The Soul Drinkers are my next favourites. I only chose DAs because they are still an active founding (ofc with their own dark secrets)
Please do a Soul Drinkers week. I love their Lore, hopefully with the new founding we get more info on their gene seed!! Also now with the new founding of old Chapters, i now have a good reason to start a small force of Soul Drinkers :)
The salamanders and Lamenters would like to give these guys a hug
I always had the idea that the soul drinkers were a 2nd founding of one of the lost legions that were absorbed by the Fists. That they were predestined to make enemies of the imperium just like the lost legions, and the following foundings...
The original idea was that the Soul Drinkers started out as a Fists successor like everyone believed, but then their entire gene-seed was replaced during their secret "refounding" by Daenyathos.
@@andrewsuryali8540 oh I get that. They were "supposed" to be from the Fists....
A whole week of Soul Drinkers??? Cant wait!
Very good video. I enjoyed the old, damaged film look. Like a lost tape from the Inquisition vault .
The original Soul Drinkers novels were very entertaining, if unintentionally heretical, stories. It’d be very interesting to see Sarpedon show his face at some point.
Wheres my Chapter Master Sarpedon! Bring Back our Spider Man Chapter Master!
In the short story "Chamber at the end of Memory" it's revealed that Dorn and Guilliman ordered the erasure of the lost primarchs and absorbed their legions. I'm simplifying a bit here but ultimately, there's a fair probability that the original 2nd founding Soul Drinkers were a part of the 7th legion that came from Lost Primarch stock.
This Primaris chapter, bearing the name of the original?
I don't know. In all likelihood, they're actual Imperial Fists stock. But with Cawl's curiosity.... who can say for sure...
The question is whether or not any of those legionnaires survived or if their geneseed was allowed to reenter circulation. Guilliman had his own troublesome chapter, namely the Nemesis Chapter, and it seems that Dorn had marines that were different in temperament from his own legacy, with the Black Templars and Exterminators chapters being founded from the Fists, yet not as similar as one would think they should be. It seemed like Guilliman used his adopted sons as suicide marines, maybe hoping subconsciously that the radiation would make their geneseed untenable. He also seemed to disagree with their tactics and temperament, choosing someone outside the chapter to lead them. Perhaps Dorn did the same with his, using them for Boarding actions and other situations where they were sure to die. Also the obligatory "YOU ARE NOT MY SON" to Sangy.
Does this mean Fafnir Rann is actually from the lost legions? I would love that personally.
@@standarddeviation7963 I don’t think they were aware of having absorbed the sons of the lost and forgotten primarchs into their legions because of the mindwipes so I doubt they’d be trying to kill them off.
@@doomguy9049 I think they just realized some of their sons were different and treated them such. Even if they mindwiped the actual event, they're Primarchs, they'd realize something was different, and even if they didn't consciously come to the conclusion, they'd probably structure those marines specifically depending on their abilities and temperment
@@standarddeviation7963 wow....that's a stretch to have Dorn's first captain come from the 2nd or 11th! I just don't see it. The "your not my son" was to disavow Sigismund not say he wasn't a son of Dorn. If that were the case Sigismund would have responded differently. Sigismund took his devotion on a different path than Dorn and Papa D didn't like it. Getting all emotional and spiritual is not the stoic Imperial Fists way. But that's a long stretch to a 2nd or 11th geneseed.
I think the Imperial Fists may take the Soul Drinkers being back but with Dorn stock well. The Soul Drinkers’ final act was enough for their name to be inscribed on the Phalanx. There’s a chance what really happened could be forgotten and they look at the honor inscribed on the Phalanx and take it as is.
My favourite music sets the mood to grim darkness 👌🏻
What would even be just awesome is a book series in which the new Soul Drinkers find out about the old soul drinkers and the demon that corrupted then and has begun trying to corrupt the new soul drinkers...Because Tznetch loves purple...Purple... let's see if the new soul drinkers knowing about their past can stop their own corruption...With out civil war this time! That's a series I would both write...and love to read if I didn't write it!
As far as I'm concerned Sarpedon and the remaining Soul Drinkers found a way to rebuild, at least enough to survive if not return to any kind of crusade. I would love to see the new chapter come into contact with the original and help them be redeemed in the eyes of the Inquisition.
Hey Rho I love your uploads, keep em coming ! Can we get a upload on Constantine Valdor?! I know how you love to he Custodes and he is the most epic of all Custodes! What are your thoughts on his disappearance and possible whereabouts and return?
I am so happy about this. The soul drinkers are my favorite chapter.

OG Soul Drinkers come from Emperor's Children geneseed.

someone who's intimately familiar with the Soul Drinkers lore: was the "black chalice" thing ever addressed? was it related to Chaplain Iktinos and his secret plan?
also, [SPOILER ALERT]:
Spoiler: the imperial records showed incomplete, inaccurate or otherwise incorrect history right? wasn't Sarpedon able to active some kind of Imperial Fist-specific artifact that only Astartes with Dorn's blood could activate? why is this in question? not looking to argue, i just thought the matter was settled towards the end of the book.
So Cawl's new primaris chapters are based on chapters that probably got [censured]
I want this chapter to use the original gene seed of the original soul drinkers chapter, our eight legend spider bois. because if that is not the case then they are not the soul drinkers we know and love
Primaris Rainbow Fisters coming up next?
I think the soul drinkers are from one of the Lost Legions
Hey can I get a sip of that soul pal? Thanks bud!
This is a terrible idea, a great deal of the chapter traditions were laid out by Daenyathos, who was explicitly chaos-corrupted. The essence of the Soul Drinkers must be excised to preserve the soul of the chapter, as bizarre as that sounds.
Maybe this is Cawl just hustling some primaris Emperor’s Children into action through a dead chapter.
Slaanesh: I call dips!
I just hope this isn't a poor excuse to go the "Chaos has everything the imperium has but corrupted" route.
Damn so no background huh just chapter reborn?
Ork sniper will kill them all
Soul drinkers in name only

I want spider chapter master back!
These guys are thousand sun cud thousand sons=mutation and these guys had an abundance of them
So does that mean ever supertentacled Emprahs Children Noise Marine is now a Thousand Son as well, or do other factions get mutated, too?
they maybe scions of forgotten primarchs.
Without the Soul Drinkers what's the point of this Galaxy ?
I always thought the soul drinkers were usurped by the alpha legion.
I’m annoyed that “Traitor by Deed” never made it here
Shit just got real
Wasn't the Soulspear gene-coded so that only a son of Dorn could use it?
Yes. it implies that SOME of the Soul Drinkers did come from Dorn's stock, which makes sense given that both Imperial and Crimson Fists chapters remember the history of their Founding. However, Daenyathos was possibly not of Dorn's stock and from the time of his involvement onwards the Soul Drinkers might have become a hybrid Chapter like many in the 25th Founding. It's similar to how the Alpha Legion sneak their own into other Chapters to "borrow" the Chapter's recruitment system to produce new Alphas.
@@andrewsuryali8540 works for me. I could never find the second omnibus (for less than $100) so I'm sure that's where my gap in lore comes from.
No. The Soulspear was a Soul Drinkers artifact and was gene locked. The Souldrinkers could use the spear. The Souldrinkers weren't of Dorne's lineage according to the tests the Imperial Fists ran. Meaning the spear was not an artifact if Rogal Dorne.
That Soul Drinkers story is a little sad.
Inquisitor: "Primarch Guilliman, why were the Soul Drinkers selected for ... rebirth? Was it something you read in the documents you have been catching up with? A request by the Imperial Fists or even the Throne? Cawl being coy? Or was it just some name pulled out by Administratum nobody?"
Guilliman: "Simpler explanation: Ben Counter needing to rehash his best."
/Original Soul Drinkers' Primarch?
A. Unknown Primarch (Evidence: Well, this choice successfully evades all explanations).
B. Alpharius/Omegon (long-plan traitor brought them down, Alpharius said to have had a spear in possessions, 30K-era loyal Alpha Legion may have run to Dorn)
C. Konrad Curze (hit-and-run philosophy, HATED corruption, learned via cannibalism, Sarpedon's psyker power of terror and Chaos Gods have always pressed to recruit the sons of Curze, who himself likely was cursed for rejecting them despite throwing his lot with the traitors. But would Dorn take in loyalist Night Lords based on their rep and being nearly killed by Curze in an argument, and Night Lords aren't known for long-term schemes)
D. Fulgrim (ornate heraldry, colors and ... that's it)
You could find simple commonalities like that with any legion, loyalist or traitor.
Smh no Arachno-Sarpedon
Suffer not the heretic or the mutant
The moment I saw the title of this video the first words out my mouth were "What the Heresy?!" not because the Soul Drinkers are considered traitors, but because after having read a great deal of that cursed series, as well as several Gray Knights novels that were, unfortunately, also written by the same author (Spoiler alert, Gray Knight Helmets sometimes spontaneously dissolve under some water even though they can withstand the atmosphere of space,) I have truly determined that Ben Counter has no clue how to write believable characters, and especially not Astartes, the things he wrote have such pathetic armor regular bullets regular punch through them, instakilling the pathetically weak things inside with wounds that wouldn't even kill a mortal man, and have such pathetic moral that a a tirade of mean words can cause them to have to swap out guards on you. Please tell me that, in the event the Soul Drinkers are being brought back, it has nothing to do with that walking train wreck that is Ben Counter, please oh please tell me that!
0:32 ....Ben... Effing... Counter... that walking abomination is at it again, destroying what could otherwise be good books, and good series. Rest in peace Furious Abyss, it wasn't Ultramarines, Wolves of Fenris or even the Word Bearers who killed you, it was Ben Effing Counter who murdered you before you were ever made, along with every other book he's ever written in 40K.
9:05 Will... Ben Counter... ever understand what it is to be Astartes. He doesn't even seem to understand how regular people behave and act, let along these apex super soldiers.
The concept of the Soul Drinkers is quite cool, but the author who wrote them, wrote them into the ground. They've been dead and buried so long I'm just begging Counter to stop kicking this dead horse, just let them stay dead.
Sometimes, Wolf Lore Rho, your constant optimism and always giving nothing but pro's when they are obvious cons wears... really... thin. No one would ever know there was a single bad written work in existence with you reviewing them, and that honestly makes it difficult to trust your opinion. I know you've got a huge fanbase, and it's well earned, don't get me wrong, I've thoroughly enjoyed listening to you read so many things, but even when I agreed with your opinion, I caught on to the fact you only ever seem to have a positive opinion on the things you review and that does makes me question the legitimacy of trusting your opinions on books I haven't read.
If you do cover the Soul Drinker series, that will be one set of videos I will not be watching, as that was a disaster set to rival the Blood Ravens books by C. S. Goto.
In any case, seeya next time Rho, be safe out there.
So they aren’t actually Soul Drinkers.
Cawl probably used their geneseed for the reborn chapter. He has access to it.
