  • A personal account of female soldiers about their life in the Israeli Army, the only one to draw women for mandatory military service.
A female point of view on the drama of an unending war, on the moral challenges they faced at the encounter with the Palestinian population. Questions that were not dealt with during the service are raised today with great pain - and courage. A female point of view on the drama of an unending war, on the moral challenges the soldiers faced at the encounter with the Palestinian population. The young women look back critically at the way they handled the power that was placed in their hands at the young age of eighteen. Did they really smile in the pictures?
In 1988 the filmmaker served herself in the Israeli Defence Force in the Occupied Territories. 'How could I ever think I'd forget...' is what one of the young women asks herself at then end of this film.

Their name are Meytal, Rotem, Inbar, Dana, Tal, Libi, they have one thing in common, having served the Israeli Defense Forces. In Israel, the national military service is mandatory for all Israeli citizens over the age of 18, male and female.
Through the different stories of these women, the documentary raises the question of the place of women in the army, a world historically of men, but also and more broadly the question of the group and what the human is able to do to assert its place .
These young women from the top of their 18 years, will discover a world completely different from their daily life in the ultra secured state that is Isreal. First of all, entering this military space will instinctively lead them to erase their femininity and copy the behavior of men. Furthermore, joining the army will also lead them to participate in a group dynamic, based on their belonging to Israel. Some of them will commit atrocious acts during this endless conflict with Palestine, which they would certainly never have thought of being able to undertake.
In fact, for some of them, the pride of serving their country and doing "good" will soon give way to a feeling of disillusionment and fear when faced with the reality of the horrors of war.
With impressive candor they talk about what they saw and what they did; the way they tried to make sense of this ‘other world’, and how they tried to reconcile their experiences with the self they were familiar with, stripped of army uniform. However, the documentary does not seek to excuse or justify the acts that were committed in the West Bank during this period since the first Palestinian uprising.
"To See if I’m Smiling" powerfully explores the way gender, ethics, power and moral responsibility interact in times of war. Its rare tapestry of women’s testimonies leaves us to ponder some of the most burning questions of our times. It is not only a story about women in the Israeli army and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but a universal story, about war and its atrocities and what it does to people.

Arabs have been killing jews since forever. Before there was any occupation.. you people ignore the FACT that these people have been slaughtering jews everywhere they go in the world. All Arab nations have slaughtered jews and kicked them out well before they returned back to their homeland. The Quran even says all jews must die.. blames everything on the jews.. what about the thousands of palastenians killed by their own??? The other nations that kill them? All the other mualim nations that actively use them? Brain dead u are.

Way longer than that. Jewish people have been doing this to Palestinians for 140 years. It's become worse though. Thanks to social media Israel's lies are gradually being debunked. Israel was built on stolen land. Anyone in their right mind wouldn't accept living in a place (I don't want to call it a country or a state -- they don't deserve it) that has been built on lies and stolen land. They try to portray themselves as the only democratic "place" in the Middle East, but they are worse than any other dictatorship, because they have the Israeli Lobby filling up the pockets of politicians in America and other European countries to cover up their lies. Shame on the U.S. for allowing them to get away with this.

I recently found a video on YT that was uploaded 17 years a go.
Almost as old as you tube itself.
The video is of two male former Israeli soldiers speaking of the mistreatment they metered out on Palestinians in the west bank settlements.
Occupying houses for days so they could spy on people.
Locking the family in a bedroom, denying them the right to even leave to go to earn a living.
Eating their food, using the children's bedrooms to store their weapons and ammunition whilst occupying the property totally unannounced and often in the dead of night and with violent threats to the father of the home in front of his children.
These two Israelis were pretty messed up over it.
They had conducted these operations hundreds of times.
It ran counter to there own moral code. One soldier remarked on how some of these Palestinians even after the mistreatment would still share their food with the soldiers. That really got to one of the men being interviewed. How could they be kind to his demonic ways. The realisation broke him.
They even left Israel because it changed their view of the entire state apparatus.
They did not volunteer as it was part of national service.
So they too were the victims of their legacy.
That video was 17 years old.
So don't tell me this started on OCT 7th and don't tell me if you treat a community that way for decades you shouldn't expect violent pushback at some point.
Most Americans have guns to protect against home invasion.
I wonder how they would feel if government agents stormed their home at 3am and trashed it for days even weeks, held them hostage and belittled them in front of their children. Then left.
    Yea. Think about that.
Britain fought the IRA for 30 years. 3000 lives lost.
Yet the British government never carpet bombed Belfast even when IRA terrorists were living amongst civilians.
Even after the IRA blew up the British government in the Grand hotel in Brighton.
Not even after they blew up Lord Mountbatten, a royal member on his boat.
Britain did not move to aerial bombing an entire city to 'target terrorists'
And how did that 30 year campaign of violence end?
With a cease fire agreement by both sides.
    The IRA weren't wiped out.
Some of its members are in the Irish government today, legitimately voted in to power in a democratic election within Ireland.
Compromises had to be made by both sides.
And what did the IRA think of Brits during that 30 year campaign.
They wanted anyone in support of the British establishment dead. Eradicated.
And how did the British establishment label those IRA members. As terrorists that didn't deserve to live among us..
    Sound familiar now.
And what religions were involved in that campaign?
Well neither side were muslim thats for sure.
This isn't an unprecedented situation. Its a copy of a copy of a copy demonstrated by colonialist oppression for centuries.
Its time it was stopped for good everywhere.

I can only speak for myself, but I think that it is more than possible to feel awful both for the IDF soldiers that were brainwashed into doing horrific things to Palestinians for their government *and* for the Palestinians that have had to suffer at the hands of the Israeli, US, and UK governments via the IDF for decades. It's the same as feeling bad for the members of Hamas that were put in the position of thinking that the only way out of their material conditions is to brutally attack and kidnap Israelis while also feeling awful over what the members of the Kibbutz Be'eri had to endure earlier in October. Basically, everyone, both Israelis and Palestinians, is suffering because of a fascist government upheld and supported by the US and UK. Just because I believe Palestinians are victimised more by the Israeli government doesn't mean that I can't also think that Israelis are victims of their own government.

@@sandia2beaumont That IS an extremely good question.. I do not think EITHER of us would actually BE "who" we are, IF we really WERE in that situation ; on EITHER side.
The parents of my best friend at Junior school had BOTH survived Auschwittz and Belsen. From what little THEY said, and the looks on their faces when remembering,, if I WERE a Jew, "Never again" would MEAN "NEVER again !" without ANY doubt.
I also have ex muslim friends now, one who still calls himself an Arab Israeli. From what they say, IF I had been born an Arab Muslim and been exposed to Al Aqsa TV programming and the often violent religious pressure, I have no doubt I would be Arab Israeli IF I had my CURRENT intelligence. BUT if I had been "groomed" along the lines of Majid Nawaz, OR not had the chance of an education, then I do think I WOULD have followed THAT path ? ? ?
BUT, I am VERY aware that "WHO" I am is a long accumulation and growth from ALL that I HAVE been exposed to, my education bringing me into close contact WITH pre Revolution Persians, Syrians, Lebanese, Arabs AS WELL as my own European "culture". WITHOUT any of that, I would NEVER have learned any Arabic, Farsi OR Hebrew to try to learn OUTSIDE my own culture ? ? I am not sure if THAT person would even BE a "me" that I recognise ? ?

The commanders have zero hearts, the whole system is so messed up that they allow these young, immature people to join the army and it’s with one purpose in mind and that is due to the immaturity of these soldiers, they will commit crimes more easy and without any regard for a human life. The ones higher in command know that because of the young age of these soldiers, they will be able to mold them into the monsters they want them to be. This has been going on forever. What these women are going through isn't simple PTSD, which you can get from any trauma, like a car accident or similar incidents. MORAL INJURY is what they are describing. When you grow up with a fixed set of beliefs about Right and Wrong and with the idea that you are one of the good guys, you have good values, etc., and Then you do something horrible or witness something being done and don't stop it, you hate yourself and it really screws you up. Why? Because you don't hate it at the time, it's too "normal" to hate, it's not until later that you come to realize that all those crazy things you did in combat were in fact Insane. Also while in Combat you are Super Alive, all your senses are heightened even your sense of feeling Alive is, you enjoy your food more your comradery (trauma bonding) is amazing, you often learn you are far more brave and capable than you expected, which makes you proud, etc. So there are there weird Good Things about combat, but it's all mixed in with the trauma. I shouldn't be enjoying any of this, right? But how can you not, when your body is flooded with endorphins and dopamine and adrenaline, etc? Do any of you know what that chemical cocktail does to the brain, it makes you crazy, but like all crazy people, you don't think you are crazy. And in fact you aren't crazy, that's the Normal reaction that a brain has to war. It's been well documented going back into antiquity.
To make matters worse half the people there seem to enjoy the insanity to it's fullest and when you come home from your deployment(s) you are told you are the greatest thing since sliced bread. Being told how great you are for violating every taboo you were ever taught screws with your head even more. War or Occupation takes place on Suspended Moral Ground. What's normal and right doesn't exist in war, wrong is right and right is wrong. How does your head deal with that concept? You either accept it and move on, learn to enjoy it and become twisted or you hate yourself and Society for condoning and even praising your behavior.
I fucking HATE being told "thank you for your service". Why on God's name would I ever want to be thanks for being their trained barbarian and what kind of special asshole does that make you? You will thank any soldier for their service, having no idea at all what they may have done or how guilty that soldier might feel inside for the stuff they did or the things they saw? Don't any of you understand what it is you are thanking me for? And by the way if a guy actually likes being thanked, chances are he or she, didn't do any of the actual fighting.
You people crafted a society where I was told I had ONE set of values that I needed to learn, and well it turns out there are TWO, one for war and one for the rest of the time and NONE of you acknowledge it and instead pretend like there is only one set of rules. You praise me for going out and taking part in mass murder AND behave morally superior to the people who we attacked and you can do so only because you had ME do your dirty work while you close your eyes to what it was you actually ask me to go do. By the way, why should I come back and respect any of your rules or your morality and how do I fit in among all these two faced liars who won't admit what it really was they sent me to do?
It took me decades to just Accept that It is What it is, I was lied to growing up, I thought we had one set of morals, now I accept that we don't and just allowed myself to move on. Was it my fault that I was lied to and that Adults actually accept two completely opposite values based on where and when they take place? Radical Acceptance Theory is the only therapy that ever helped me at all. It's just the idea of saying Fuck It, it is what it is. I did the best I could, I couldn't have done better than that nor should I ever have held myself up to standards that Society itself is lying about or in denial about.
You send kids off to war, where morality is forgotten, then you praise them for doing what has to be done, in this non-moral environment and wonder why they can't figure out which side is up anymore.
By the way, the effects of PTSD are markedly worse depending on how the person views the Morality of the Mission as well. When soldiers come to believe they are on the wrong side it creates MORE Moral Injury than if the war is truly just. If I had been fighting off invaders who were trying to kill my wife and children I highly doubt I would have suffered one tenth of the angst and trauma that I went through before finally learning to accept that I am after all only human.
These women were broken, but mostly it's their sense of right and wrong that was destroyed and they have yet to accept that we humans are NOT as moral as we believe, we have Morality that works in every day life and then we have the Dark Side that accepts the worst aspects of human nature as normal. And the civilians who support war love to hear about Rules of Engagement and all that feel good stuff because it lets them off the hook for sending their Son's and Daughters to do their dirty work for them. They get to pretend they are more moral than the soldiers and that it's only a few bad apples who make their beloved military look bad. They even cheer when a soldier will once in a while get in trouble for war crimes or for abusing prisoners etc. Again, that gives them the illusion that they are better than the War They Themselves Support. Those few bad apples become their own personal skapegoats and this allows them to feel their hands are clean as they send more young men women to do more dirty work.

Billions and billions of dollars in aid and relief since the establishment of the fake oand of Palestine and they have used every last penny to wage war against their neighbor... this began even before the 6 day war... it is what caused the 6 day war... people should really educate themselves on the facts of this conflict and point the finger at the one freaking group of people that refuse to be a decent civilization. They have shat on every opportunity given to them, bitten every hand that has been held out to them in help and solidarity..they have betrayed every single group of people that have ever tried to do anything for them... this is why no one in the middle east will take them in... only throw money at them... this is why no palastenian is allowed to be a citizen in ANY Arab country... you do not find that in Israel, where arabs and palastenians are in government and even live in Israel. The feeling of having no right whatsoever and to be totally at the mercy of your oppressors makes yone aggressive and do terrible things. Occupation? There are no Israelis in Gaza. No military, no civilians, No jews. 10K jews were relocated from Gaza almost 20 y. ago. Several times Arab countries attacked Israel. Not to free anyone. To destroy -erase the state. Every time Israel won defensive wars ! Winning war =winning territory. And several time they gave land back - to attackers, for peace.
      "no rights whatsoever" ?
President of a major Israeli Bank is Palestinian. There are Palestinians in Knesset (parliament) Supreme Court judge is Palestinian. Arabs can live and work in Israel. How many jews live in Arab countries?
"oppression makes young aggressive and do terrible things." Gandhi would disagree. There are many oppressed nations around the world and they don't do terrible things. It's hatred. Rejecting coexistence. TV, books, schools...are teaching children to hate. From kindergarten children are singing songs about killing jews.
"They can do whatever they like" ?
Atrocities happen in every war. But there are Israeli soldiers in prison - for doing whatever they liked. On the other side they are rewarded and celebrated for killing women and children.

It's okay though. Israelis, and their diaspora, generally prefer manipulating other people groups into killing one another, especially for their own personal security or profit related causes. This works out much better, because the rest of our lives have far less value than theirs, as we are classified much like livestock(goyim), in their eyes. After all, the rest of us were born without souls and we were only created for the sole purpose of obediently serving their superior needs.
I was ignorant of my life's purpose in my youth, but thankfully, I learned all of this when I finally consulted their religious texts and spoke to their most pious religious leaders. Thank goodness, I now understand how utterly insignificant my existence is when compared to these far superior people. I'm now very willing and happy to sacrifice my children's lives to any whim these great people see necessary. It would be an honor to sacrifice the future of every last one of my people, if we can prevent even ONE of these most valuable of all humans from having their feelings slightly hurt in any way. Actually, the rest of us aren't really "human" anyway, as their religious laws make very clear. I apologize if I appeared to be comparing my valueless beast-people to these most godly of supreme beings. Please forgive my embarrassingly ignorant goyish error.

Regular people aren't the problem. It's the psychopaths, sociopaths and narcissists of the world that commit most of the world's suffering. What us normal people need to do is to CALL these people out for what they are and put a stop to the suffering THEY cause in the world abroad. Unfortunately, as we all know that C-level executive positions attract an exponentially higher percentage of these abnormal personality types, well, so does any other large organization - especially the governments of the world (including terrorist organizations and everything else in between).
If we keep giving suspect people the benefit of the doubt, or allow ourselves to be led astray by charismatic leaders, or even by those who fulfil our own confirmation bias (see politics), then the evils of the world will continue to flourish. It's up to the citizens of the world to practice critical thinking and have the willingness to entertain different ways of thinking and to stop assuming that the world is as it's shown to us (such as with the news, political speeches, etc. - even the things we believe in our own heads).

That is not enough when you think of the power they were given over human life and what they did with it. It is not enough when you think about their victims and their families and what they've gone through! What comes across in this is 'sure the Palestinians are being mistreated but look at the 'poor occupation forces' and what they're going through too!' Again, making themselves the victims of their own aggression! This system is part of Israeli society so they all know what they sign up for. What about the childhood of hundreds of thousands of children who grew up seeing, on daily basis, homes being raided, parents, brothers, sister and peers being beat-up, arrested and shot down? Any thought the level of trauma they would have grown up with? Or it doesn't matter as much? As we speak, there are hundreds of Palestinian minors being imprisoned, some of them in solitary cells, without recourse to fair court proceedings. The same goes for women who get picked up for speaking up against the apartheid regime and then beat-up and raped. Free Palestine!

Throughout the documentary did they ever straight out condemn the action of the army? they just cried about how they felt, so self centred and out of touch with reality it's crazy. Then these soldiers who murder children and shoot at them or imprison them for throwing rocks or giving dirty looks go on to be mothers and live a life away from war. While the Palestinians live out their whole life under military occupation and oppression! its not a two years period for the Palestinian people like it is for these soldiers, it is a life sentence.

They are, like the nazi's, "Uber Alles" or "above all". There is a huge chasm and disrespect between being Israeli as occupiers and Palestinian as host country. The ones that stayed have been harassed and humiliated and killed without mercy. @frauleinanni1528 Some laughs at the beginning seemed nervous to me and some not. The one blond girl has that, but the with others it doesn't seem that way. Because sometimes she smiles about something she thinks is funny or when she tells about something. For instant when she told it was just a little boy, she shot. I don't know, but it also comes across as some psychopath trades. Like some serial killers or rapists smile when they talk about their victims or deeds. Like they are proud about it, or even get aroused by it. To me, it looked like she did really like the power she had. She didn't seem really remorseful. Only the woman with the short hair who looked like a boy, seemed really remorseful and aware of what she did. At one moment when she tells about the photograph with the corpse, you can see the disgust for her own action, on her face. The others didn't seem remorseful at all to me, but that's just my opinion. Because none of them cried or was teary eyed, when telling about these horrible things. Also none of them apologized to the victims or said much about how wrong some of the things they did were. Me personally, I would take this opportunity to express my sincere regret and apologies. Or if I felt really bad about things I did, I would try to make things better. For example: help Palestinians in prison or complain about human violations carried out by IDF. Or write a letter to my victims with some kind of apology, even if that wouldn't undo the harm. It's almost like knowing what they know now, they would still do the same things in the same situation.

44:42 Standford experiment at it's finest...she was upset because someone under her occupation showed a finger to her so she treated him like a criminal who just killed 1000 civilians and abused him like a 1700 barbarian...all this because she had some "power". Such a "brave" soldier. And to have the courage to cry victimhood...these people have no shame or soul. And then they wonder why no one wants them around.

12:50 that story about the boy and how the soldiers beat him and put cigaretts on him, that reminded me of those psychological experiments where you put people into positions of power, one being the jailors the others the prisoners. Whoever gets power and is not reminded and also punished for abuse, will abuse their power.
Further in now, all these women are having PTSD themselves and have abused their power one way or another, knowing that and therefor feeling guilty and ashamed. What a nightmare. That they speak about this openly ... . I propably couldn't.
How many more of these stories are currently created?

Anyway, if the numbers of non-serving orthodox youth increases there might be a lack of serving people in, uhm, 50 years. If Israel exists this long.
