  • r/AmITheA**hole In today's episode, OP has a confrontation with her bizarre parents. For some reason, her parents are absolutely obsessed with her love life and are terrified that she will become "easy" in college. They call her terribly sexist names, and they even make bets with other members of the family about when she will lose her virginity. OP is pretty sure that her parents are wrong here, but her whole family is against her in this. Is OP the butthole?

The story about speaking Spanish reminds me of something "similar". When driving with a friend, we got rear ended by another car. While we were waiting for the police, the family in the other car started speaking Spanish, telling each other how they would lie to blame the accident on us. I am white and so was my friend. I speak Spanish. My friend knew a few phrases. After hearing their whole plan, I smiled and looked at my friend and asked "Que Hora es?" "What time is it?" He respond in Spanish, but didn't know what I was up to. I looked at the family and smile wickedly, letting them know I had fully understood their plan to tell the cops. The told the truth.

Honestly, the friend should be happier here since:
1: He can still visit his childhood home since his friend lives there. Can’t do that if a stranger buys it.
2: If his friend is good, then he should be able to trust them to take good care of the house. Can be kinda up in the air with a stranger.

Plot twist: I'm trans now and go by a different name, and I stopped speaking with him the moment he told me that and reconsidered how I viewed myself and how other people's opinions affected me. The made a million story:
That family sounds like a bunch of arrogant people that like to brag and belittle the family member that "wasn't as successful" as them or their children but when you flip the situation they act hurt and play the victim. Me and my brother can fully relate to this, because he's a car mechanic (Automechatroniker in German, so not just a mechanic but also all the electrical stuff) and I'm studying game art and design and my family belittles my brother because he "doesn't know what he's doing", at least that's what my aunt who's really not bright says and now she acts hurt because my brother won't check her car again. And except for my dad and brother no one in my family knows anything about computers let alone video games so they don't understand that this is a "real" job I'm studying. Family members should support each other not make one member miserable.
(Btw my brother and I are the youngest people in our direct family with him(26) and me(19) after that it's my aunt(50) so yeah there's an age gap.)
About the story regarding the slut bet:
I'd be furious with my family, because I just can't understand what has to be wrong with a family to make ANY kind of bet on one of their family members. And it's not their business whom she sleeps with or when she sleeps with someone. I probably wouldn't contact them ever again until they apologized for basically turning my life choices into a game for their entertainment. They are seriously just gigantic assholes, especially because her siblings, aunt's and parents were a part of it.
Regarding the story about the funny socks:
A friend of mine also loves funny socks and she gets so many compliments because of them. They make the handicapped children at her workplace happy and she has some happy memories connected with the socks. For example she has a pair of socks with fluffy textured hedgehogs on them from our class trip to Scotland and she loves those memories. The boyfriend in the story is really controlling and kind of I guess uptight, because it's just socks and his mom liked them. If he's embarrassed about something so minor that makes her happy then he should seriously think about that. And I think that she should absolutely demand that he buys the same pairs of socks again because she liked them and had happy memories connected with them. If you can't accept that your partner wears funny socks you should think about what your partner accepts about you and realise that it's just fucking socks.
These people are way too nice and considerate towards these butts. If someone treats you like a piece of crap then don't be kind to them, because that's only going to hurt you (and I don't mean be mean to them, just be indifferent or ignore them).
I apologise for any grammatical errors and such, as you might have noticed english isn't my first language.

I mostly learned Spanish by the context of the conversations around me. From taking Spanish classes for two years/getting outside experience, I can hear and read Spanish pretty well. I have a sort of speaking problem, so even English (my primary language) is hard for me, let alone Spanish. (The problem with me is that I know the words to say and how to say them, but when the words come out it's really a garbled mess for the first five seconds until it fixes itself.)
I can still speak okay, but it really pisses me off when people in my Spanish class go behind my back and say I'm the worst person to have to be around in English *and* Spanish. I'm not retarded. My problem is speaking, not hearing.
Don't judge books by their covers, people.

There's full blood Hispanics that look like OP in the spanish story.
Also what rubbed me so wrong about the family was agreeing that higher education was "wasting money".
Most Hispanics I have met including my own family highly value education over going straight into the workforce.
My boyfriend is also like OP (white guy is dating Hispanic girl) but my family is very supportive of him and other s/o my cousins have for being in college. That family is fuckin weird.

Well, to be completely honest, it does depend on which college/university that they choose to attend and what kind of education they choose to pursue.
For example, I wouldn't value a doctorate in interpretive dance, politically corrected gender studies, or something like highly enough to waste my money on it.
But then again, I'm more of a trade school kind of guy.
