The age old question beckons, when we all move on from this world, what will we leave behind? The truth is, none of us can ever know for certain because that moment we pass on we relinquish most control of the narrative surrounding how we’re remembered. People who have been considered controversial and problematic have been recontextualised by their death, and sometimes figures previously revered have had their involvement in some very seedy antics revealed. In some cases, a perspective will take centuries to form, and in other times it will take merely days, however, one thing that remains central in analysis of individuals is the existence of art.
I use the term “art” liberally of course here, I’m not just talking about a painting or a sculpture, I’m talking about the general product of any form of creative process that can affect someone’s life in a meaningful way. An artist’s direct words or thoughts may be long forgotten, but their creations will always serve as a window to their mind. What these works may say specifically is often down to interpretation but there are often general themes that many people identify with, which is what provides them with a following and a reputation. Upon analysis of such content, many of us draw parallels between the pieces and the person behind them, after all, art should be a bit of oneself; we enjoy identifying with others, even when it extends to maestros who we could never really hope to get near in terms of genius.
For the new generation of aspiring creatives, times have somewhat evolved, particularly with the presence of social media which enables many people to speak more directly to their chosen audience. For those who choose to use it, you may have a close up on the person behind a beloved work, and based on their behaviour you may be able to make a summary judgement if you want to delve into their works much further. However, for all the benefits that such an experience can provide, it can also play into an unhealthy parasocial relationship, one that we’ve spoken about in the past, particularly when said art may not appear to reflect a person’s character.
Yes, every now and then though anomalies appear in the system, people who may have created something wonderful that many find to be an uplifting and positive force in their life may also have negatively affected others in a marked way, either due to their actions or words separate to their art. This is where the discourse surrounding distinguishing art from the artist originates, appreciating good workmanship doesn’t necessarily presuppose a complete endorsement of the person behind it. However, over time, the bar for this sort of standard has definitely been lowered a little, with the rise of social media, and people perhaps having a bit too much time to argue, this sort of distinction has become more and more regularly employed. A prime example of such a trend is JK Rowling, a previously renowned celebrity who took a political position that was contrary to many of her colleagues and fans. If she’d never sent out a Tweet on the matter many people who probably regard her with disdain would still adore her.
Humans are complex multifaceted creatures; many of whom are deeply troubled and don’t necessarily benefit from the public spotlight, sometimes leaving us to wonder whether we knew them as well as we thought we did, and perhaps wishing we didn’t know them as well now. This is what leads to probably the most quintessentially Gen Z example: a gentleman by the name Markus Persson, or as he is known to many online: Notch.

imagine trying to explain this all to a victorian child
I don't get why people were mad at "Yeah you can give money to servers but don't offer in game advantages for money." Like, I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment.
When I was a kid, servers in any game that gave you in-game advantages for donating was a server one avoided like the plague.
From what I remember, most of it was kids thinking it's a bad thing *because* the servers they like were *telling them* it's a bad thing and that the servers they love won't be able to continue without it. The server staff are much more directly related to the kids playing on them than Mojang, so they can get them on their side much easier.
@@TheDolphinTuna Back in 2013, I don't remember any large server where donating didn't get you _something._ It was only the egregious ones (ie PvP servers mostly) which were avoided. Most survival servers would offer things for donating like extra sethomes, some donator-only warps and use of /tpa. That kind of benefit seemed everywhere.
@@ccaagg TBH there were some servers where playtime counted back in the day, I remember going on one that gave perks that you'd usually find on donor ranks on most servers
Yeah but community servers have to make money.
The server I used to play had a donor kits you could buy but they were never too op and they were manageable. Not only did advantages like this matter for people to want to donate and keep servers up but it also encouraged players to stay, since a lot of people would quit pvp before they played enough to be decent.
That's all for pvp side of things but regardless in the long run from what I can tell, it was a bad thing.
notch is a great case study of what being chronically online can do to a persson
notch is also a great study of what being born into a right wing family does to an mfer.
"Persson", i see what you did there
@@franklinbadge1215 😏
An even better case study is the lefty Twitter crowd crying about him. Just as terminally online if not moreso than him
@@paz1514 theres a lot of terminally online people with progressive beliefs, but theyre often more just cringe and lacking realistic nuance rather than radical and harmful like the right-wing regressive kind. i havent seen any mass shooters or insurrections espousing twitter leftism as the reason for doing what they do, while the alt-right rabbit hole and the xenophobic individualistic nationalism it encourages is responsible for a disturbing amount of them. as in, most of the ones i can think of off the top of my head. plus, theres nothing inherently terminally online about calling out someone for being into qanon. most people who have gone outside and talked to a real person in the past 6 months can tell you those beliefs sound like the insanity of a doomsday cult and its obviously just a convoluted coping strategy.
After Notch sold Minecraft he became a billionaire and had "reached the top", he was supposed to be one of the happiest people in the world, however he came to the grim realization that he wasn't. He no longer had a purpose in life to fill his days, nor could he form meaningful interpersonal relationships anymore due to the isolating effect of his vast wealth (considering the parties he threw it's hard not to draw parallels between him and Jay from The Great Gatsby). Inevitably he got depressed and spiraled further and further into mental illness. As for the political radicalization, studies have clearly shown that on average mentally ill people are drastically more susceptible to it and that political radicalization in itself can lead to the development of various mental illness. I think the main take away from Notch's story is that if you ever run into a financial windfall yourself, it's imperative that you don't let it significantly alter your lifestyle. It's probably best to continue to live fairly normally and simply use your wealth as an opportunity to enhance the existing things that bring you happiness, for example pursuing a more enjoyable career path and getting to take your hobbies to higher levels. I think it's important that we keep in mind that whilst money can't buy happiness, it can add / remove the obstacles to happiness depending on how you use it.
There is a reason so many successful lottery winners simply hide it.
Nice head canon bro
@AsePlayer What did I say that was false D: ?
@@Kyotosomo I think it's an excellent analysis and one that I personally agree with :)
I wonder, if he hadn't let his passion for game design die, and continued to work on indie projects in private, if things would've wound up ending far different. I pity him. He lost his passion and fell hard
It’s been so weird idolizing Notch as a kid and now constantly being saddened by the bad blood he decided to make with the public
I still idolize the impact of him. His takes are bad but his impact is more than any game ever, you can’t go anywhere without seeing something of Minecraft and in turn Notch. You can’t say “I play video games” without someone asking if you played MC. You can’t have a Minecraft quiz or facts without the mention of Notch. I still call Golden Apples “Notch Apples” for god sake.
I don’t think he’s right in any means but I do think the man deserves some sort of peace after going through hell and back.
He went through and became the biggest influence way before any game was. He sold 33 million copies in 2013, way before the internet was as big as it is now. I’d say one man with that kind of recognition would go insane no matter the circumstance.
Edit: since people are keep coming at me for my usage of words lol. I should’ve been more clear I suppose, it’s not that the internet was less popular, it’s just more widely used now. Read my other comments if you want an explanation of my thought process. It’s been fun debating, so thanks folks!
@@D44RK_Iced_Yogs you can acknowledge someone's impact and influence without putting them on a pedestal. That misguided idolization is precisely what turned him into what he is now.

Typical internet goers attention span. If its not happening within 5 minutes, its gone forever.
The fact that there could be a video explaining c418 and why he doesn't make the music anymore in just as much detail as the creator of the game shows how influential Minecraft is
I think there's a great deal of irony to be found in the fact that he at least _was,_ prior to his success, aside from a few points of note, an altogether unremarkable individual at his core in terms of personality; and his last name is both pronounced identically and spelled near-identically to "person", as though an indication of a certain degree of normality to him.
It just goes to show how scary otherwise unassuming guys can be. His mindset is super common, especially among gamer guys, but they only share those screwed up opinions online so you wouldn't know if you passed by them on the street.

Notch clearly has a "terminally online" disease. One look at his tweets and you can tell that whatever he thinks, he posts. People get addicted to positive attention online and cannot stop even when reward is no longer there.
More like any attention. I do think he attracts certain people. But I’m unfortunately sure that god social starvation made him desperate for even negative attention as well.
Maybe cause of a thing called "freedom of speech". you are practising freedom of speech right now, just like notch does. just cause you disagree with someone doesnt mean they are "terminally online"
@@peanut5376 It's not a simple matter of disagreement, Notch is saying blatantly false things about trans people, spreading misconceptions that have constantly led to the creation of oppressive laws and the perpetuation of violence -- not to mention the immediate harm of people you look up to spreading outright misinformation about you. One thing I've noticed about the people closest to me that start to soak up conspiracy theory shit is they tend to be people who self isolate or have other issues they don't want to or can't work on to resolve. Anxiety, depression, feeling othered. They then buy into this sense of belonging to a group of douche bags and suddenly their entire personality flips.
It's also fact that conspiracy theories play into paranoia and the like. They target already vulnerable people specifically.

It’s still disapointing to see how everything shifted in what he said online, but honestly the 300k bonus to all previously employed people, and protecting them from layoffs, really did still get my respect. Plenty of studios when they get bought don’t do this sort of thing, mostly since they don’t have the ability to, to be fair, but it’s still just such a good thing.
one good deed does not make someone a good person. and keep in mind, his house was twice the price of giving each employee one million. and he gave them less than that. he has billions.
thats like bringing up that the racist down the street gave a homeless guy a dollar. except the dollar was more significant to the racist than .3 million was to persone

The heart is was decides if someone is good. We can't tell the thoughts of people or the genuineness behind what they say, because we can't read minds.
When people like you say "good person" or "decent person" you just mean compliant and non-controversial. Cultures always have taboo concepts and he talks about them.
Racial IQ differences as a field is off limits, if you pursue it you'll end your career and lose your financial stability.
Trans related stuff has a similar affect, though there is actually a counter to all of it. The entire field is pseudo-science that denies biology. Its only controversial because the people who go through with transition are essentially test subjects who have ruined their body, thus if presented with the facts are at risk of feeling terrible to put it lightly.

The phrase "separate art from artist" comes to mind, acknowledge the good while reprimanding the bad. Just like with role models, media, and many things in life, everyone should learn how to take and separate the good aspects of something so that it can be improved upon and acknowledged while rejecting and criticizing the bad.
Hyperbolic example but I can look at a murderer genuinely helping a old man with his groceries and say it's good deed and should happen more while also acknowledging the person themselves is awful.

I made my first CZcams video on Minecraft back in like 2012, creators like Syndicate inspired me to grab a microphone and start telling stories and creating narratives in game. It's sad that Notch chose to behave the way he did but it's an interesting story of how money and fame can alter your judgement and views, ultimately turning your reputation on its head. Great job, man.
I think people should just separate art from the artists, but the other way around
just because an artist did something you love, it doesnt stop them from doing bad deeds, and you should put your feelings for said art aside and call them out for it
He is not an artist lol just a fat bald programmer who got lucky by copying an existing idea and creating one of the ugliest, most lame games ever
I was aware of alot of this, but it's sad seeing what's happened to Notch as a person - he was a generally good person it seems before Minecraft and even during alot of his time with it. I think he went, well, bonkers due to all the issues you outlined. And Qanon offered a world view that 'explained' everything he felt was wrong. So sad that I don't think he's woken up to the bad path he took and he now is suck in a scenario where he is isolated by his previous statements, which makes it hard for people to reach him and get it through his head he was wrong. I don't know if he'll ever escape the effective loneliness. His success has weirdly messed him up.

Hey Notch, my guy, I think I’ve figured it out…
Guess he really didn't like it that
Notch, despite all his fame, success, and popularity, speaks a great deal to the characteristics I find common about most who have gone down the conspiracy rabbit hole. They are bereft of real secure attachments with other people and desperate to find a connection - only to find the illusion of a connection in a heavily radicalized community.
This exactly. I hear a lot of griping about being lonely and not taken seriously from someone who actively hates people like me and would gladly cut off my independence and legislate all my loved ones out of existence, and the irony is so thick I can't stand it.
It says a lot about a person, if one is beloved for their work by millions and billionaire and still unable to find friends.
Please keep in mind that he is Swedish... Sweden is not the usa.
So... In context... Suicide is big in Sweden, it's the solstice and the half darkness during a period of the year, being neighbor to russia doesn't help... And they are so dam awesome those vikings ❤ noch is not a viking tho.... He is just another usaer....
The inverse is also just as bad.
One thing I really love about TRO is the use and highlighting of different editors, it keeps the videos interesting visually and gives editors more chances of showing their work! Keep it up!
Bring up JKR and Ye were great comparisons. All three show how online spaces can radicalize people who were previously a ‘normie’. I thought your point on how people look for a problem to push back against was especially poignant. I hadn’t thought of that before but it makes SO MUCH SENSE. It explains the actions of a lot of ‘anti-woke’ celebrities who were considered more progressive previously
I mean, when someone says ‘we are all human’, it is ultimately true, whether someone’s at their highest highs, or lowest lows, we all have the benefits of humanity
Same for the detriments
i truly wish that instead of pushing back on social justice movements, they would push back against the bigoted establishments. leftist movements need the funding and vocal backing by respected celebrities, and yet they choose to go full nazi+transphobe instead.
To be fair Kanye has always had some wild/bad takes, the South Park episodes featuring him from 2009 mock the fact that he's always been unhinged.
Radicalize? You mean actually see the jews for what they are?
idk if jkr counts as internet radicalization... the bigotry and harmful stereotypes present in her books have been there since day one, ppl just didnt notice or didn't care. and ppl way more eloquent than me have discussed how the overall message of harry potter is very much in line with her current politics
Chronically online behaviour. I'm really glad I went to uni and experienced real life. Glad I pulled myself out of this rightwing rabbithole. Notch makes me think at what I could of ended up as, out of touch with the real world.
I just want to say, I appreciate you. It takes courage to self-reflect, challenge your beliefs, and grow out of that harmful mindset, and so way too many men don't bother and stay in their super messed up echo chamber.
Sadly, that same echo chamber is the reason I was forced to quit my career the game industry. I was doxxed by them during gamergate, and I had some really, *_really_* scary things happen to me. I had to walk away from a high paying career I loved for my own safety.
...And then here's Notch, who thinks I apparently deserved it, just cuz I'm a woman who liked video games. I stopped watching JonTron around this time, too. He has similar politics as Notch, and seems to have a pretty big chip on his shoulder towards women in general, too.

This is possibly a niche reflection but I feel it may be interesting.
There is this swedish tv-show titled The Playlist, and it's about the creation of Spotify. It is, of course, embelished to create an interesting narrative but it is based on the true story. The creator of Spotify, Daniel Ek, comes off as very similar to Notch. A solitary guy who created something that grew beyond imagination. Someone who was dedicated to their product, but seemingly were in over their head. The story of Playlist ends (Spoiler) much like the story of Notch: the creator went from being regarded as a genius to being seen as a piece of shit.
Point is, if I had a nickel for every time a Swedish man created a product that became globally known and then fell from grace, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
Your insights are really impressive. The “Resources, time, and purpose” thing was a brilliantly simple visualization. You really have a gift of breaking big concepts down into it digestible parts. Bravo sir
Hearing TRO talking about the Yogs is so surreal, wasn’t expecting my favourite long-form youtuber to talk about my longest following channel
In the end aside from his political views he created one of the most influential games of all time and like they say hate the artist but not the art.... At least Minecraft is doing well even with Microsoft handling it which is a cruious case by itself.

Lmao- you comparing Notch to the MC creators is pretty funny in itself. I do agree though, I never realized how bad it was.

Honestly glad Notch sold the game, even if it was to microsoft who could do a better job. These days no one talks about him and I even forget he exists most of the time, probably for the better.
I honestly haven't thought about the guy in over a year. The last time I actually thought or even spoke about Notch was back when I still played 2b2t, because that server is literally a time capsule of early 2010 Minecraft.

It's almost mind-blowing how Notch over time has become such a strong personification of "die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become a villain". It's soberingly, and somberly, fascinating to see how, for whatever reasons, a person who on the outside has everything (wealth, success, influence, respect, etc.) seemingly does everything they can to sabotage their life. Almost a race to the bottom, so they can fight their way to a new zenith.
We witness it time and time again. It's somewhat saddening to see it repeatedly play out with many public figures.
Looking back, a game like minecraft was always inevitable. Its a simple concept with much potential. Notch alone (with his team) could have never produced what we have gotten today. I am very curious to see what you have to say about his legacy!
I like this idea. Another sort of Minecraft-esque situation that happened with VR games is Beat Saber. That game is like... Top VR game according to a lot of people.
I'm happy that Notch created Minecraft, and as much as Microsoft have messed around with the game, I'm overall happy with it. The game in it's current state is such a departure from the older versions, 1.7 and below.
Seriously, I booted up Xbox 360 Edition not long ago and it feels like I got transported back ten years.
I mean, there's a reason people call Bedrock the Bugrock Edition.
@@sabersz i totally agree. Both Mineecraft and beat saber are to simple that they just HAD to be created at some point. Brilliant ending, speaks for itself I'd say but the problem is people in Notch's situation or falling down a pipeline need things to be a bit more on the nose. Options are optimal. Giving others the option to choose whenever that doesn't infringe on ones own basic needs is too good to pass up. Letting people identify with their pronouns is a minuscule sacrifice to make (if it can even be considered that) For all the other human rights it gives them by extension. Trans lives, Black lives, all minority lives and individuals or groups struggling with underrepresentation and systematic oppression matter. Don't lose sight of egalotarianism.
But not white people?

Something I find interesting with the comparison to JK Rowling is the difference in control over their works. Notch has since cashed out and doesn't gain much from the continued sale of the game, while JK has since made it explicit that she will never let go, and there are many problems and red flags within the work itself. Notch's goal was to separate himself to give each person an individual experience. Rowling has tied herself to hp so deeply that it reflects her thoughts and opinions at its core. The antisemitism in minecraft is very simple to remove, but slavery, racism, and the unwillingness to change are the core of hp.
