The only people I saw mentioning a 10 step K beauty treatment back in the day were US and UK content creators. Basically doing it to show off all the beauty products they bought or were given from sponsors. Then after a few years, I saw Korean companies start to advertise it.

I love the intro and the subtle shade 😆. I was just thinking "Charlotte Cho" and you brought it up 😂😂😂 Honestly I never saw a 10 step skin care line in Korea when I went there. Even if you go to bougie brands like Sulwhasoo etc in the Department Store they only sell 5 products AT MOST per line, and you don't use them all every day. I think people were confused because there was a plethora of K beauty products, then it became a marketing scheme... but really Korean beauty is more about targeting specific skin concerns for different seasons. As a person with combination skin, I can say it's difficult to tailor fit products for every season/every day ( or so I justify my serums 😂).
Kudos for an excellent video Odile, it's very enlightening and I really like the way you explained the Korean side of things... I really applaud you for defending Korean beauty (and South Korea in general) so that people can unlearn their preconceived notions about K beauty. From what I've seen of Korea though (and I hope I get to see it again), Koreans are hardworking, genuinely warm hearted people, who want to get the best out of life, even if it means spending a bit more. (And I do mean quite a bit more because you could easily spend 500 USD at Lotte Mall in one swoop;))

Thank you! That's exactly what I wanted to say with this video, so I'm happy it came across. I feel like the main strength of Korean beauty is providing endless customised solutions for every skin type, situation and concern. It's very easy to build a tailored routine using Korean products because one can find all different types of formulas and textures. In a way it's like walking in massive candy store, you can pick and choose your favourite treats but there's no need to buy everything in the store 😄

As someone that enjoys doing 6 steps of skin care this is really refreshing. In my long journey with skincare I learned so many things and what drives me is to find new products that can work for me and make me happy. This video is great for people that are not so familiarize with skincare as people told me several times that skincare is "too time consuming" and I think is because of this trend of the 10 steps. Thank you so mucho for this video. PS: Your voice is super cute and soothing. :)

This is so interesting! I'm someone who totally bought into the 10-step thing and it's funny to remember that it was Charlotte Cho who created the idea of it. I'm from California and that's really what got me into skincare. Sokoglam was where I went to to get my first K-beauty products. I think I even got one of those 10-step "starter kits," which was pretty overwhelming, and I found that a lot of them didn't agree with my skin, but I'm much more tuned in to my skin and what it needs now. Speaking just from a Western audience here, I get that the 10-step thing was just a marketing gimmick, but it definitely introduced me to products and concepts like the double cleanse and essences, prepping the skin with hydration, the order of application, and such, that blew my mind and forever changed the way I look at skincare, and for that I'm really grateful for it. Today I don't really follow everything in it, and just do what I know my skin likes and needs each day, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't the thing that got me in to skincare and introduced me to Korean products and made me want to forever learn more about it. Somehow that journey brought me all the way to your channel, which I'm thoroughly enjoying diving into. I've just watched like 6 videos back-to-back and I'm loving it, so thank you for making this content! It's amazing!!

You bring up such a good point on the "labelling oriental skincare practices as "bizarre" or "weird"". I always thought about them as gimmicky and trying hard for the clicks/views, but never really thought about its repercussions over the long term and how it impacts others outside of the world of skincare.

Yeah there was a time where a European based company tried to file a patent for turmeric because they discovered turmeric was rich in antioxidants. India filed a lawsuit claiming that they found the medicinal uses of turmeric way before the company did and it's not fair to patent a ingredient that's been used for thousands of years.
It's may sound bizzare because the practice is new to westerners but we have been practicing it for ages, it's normal.
I just hate it when I find turmeric tea or tablets in the supplement aisle. Use it as a food coloring when you make a soup. Use it with honey to soothe wounds. Just find a houseold use for it. Same goes for Ashwagandha.
Don't try to patent turmeric. We will fight for our right to use turmeric. It's a universal right.

    • @ajae...
      @ajae... Před rokem +2

I didn't think of it as orientalism at first, but it definitely was. I thought it was a method that people enjoyed. I had read a book by a Japanese esthetician who advised diy sheet masks with paper towels and lotion (toner, she used Nars) right before the k-beauty trend hit. The ideas were similar. What I thought was good advice became weird cultural objectification. I could swear someone recommended adding a tea ceremony to your routine.
I kept the a hydrating toner toner for a while, and it helped. But I recently gave them up as well as double cleansing because hydrating ingredients can irritate me and using two cleaners at a time is terrible for me.

Great video, as always!! Could not agree more. Charlotte Cho did something quite unethical but also genius business-wise lol
I remember when I first got into K-beauty 6 years ago and went a little nuts with all these steps. Of course never followed them because 1) budget 2) hello I have a life beyond skincare but time is not unlimited. I'm thankful for my (autistic) curiosity that led me to look for videos of Korean women doing their routines and while I did find a couple with an insane amount of steps, for the most part they were all pretty realistic and doable. Like yeah maybe there's an extra 1 or 2 products but nothing too crazy. The first thing that was brought to my attention though was the importance of proper hydration instead of focusing only in the moisture part and, while nothing in excess is good, adding a gentle, hydrating toner made quite a difference on my skin. Of course it will depend on skin type, water quality, diet, etc. but to this day I still enjoy doing it!
Also just as a side note but to me it never seemed as if the Koreans were exotic and strange for doing this, from the beginning I was mind-blown by how advanced their research is compared to the West!!

I'm so glad this video is finally up! This should be sent to every Western skin specialist (yes, I'm meaning dermatologists and aestheticians) who like to bash on K-beauty because it's "too many steps and therefore not good for the skin barrier." 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ It is fine to not know about something in your field, but when you go out of your way to attack it, make sure to know the topic first.
The orientalist toxicity of this myth is also laden with the pernicious stereotype of the "generically Asian" woman, submissive and bent on making herself pleasant for the male gaze, including through extremely elaborate beauty rituals.
It's also funny that Westerners will look at Hollywood and think "that's all Botox and plastic surgery" and then see the movie stars from Korea and assume it's due to a cleansing balm. I guess they think that modern aesthetic medicine hasn't reached the Orient yet. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

I needed this video so bad. I have always been very intrested in skincare so when korean skincare started coming to western countries I jumped onboard right away, but I always felt so overwhelmed and still do. So many products and reading articles on specific ingredients that you NEED to include if you want to improve a certain skin issue. I have combination skin(oily t-zone and normal cheeks) with a lot of "issues" including large pores, acne scars, pimples(when I don't look after my diet) and redness and according to western beauty media I need vitamin A, vitamin E, Niacinamide, BHA/PHA, different form of acids, antioxidants, herbs, extracts, ceramides and so on. I find it impossible to figure out what I actually need when according to western media I need EVERYTHING. And it is impossible to find all of the these ingredients in one or a few products. So over it.
Would be so grateful if you could consider doing a video targeted more towards those with some of these issues, although I understand if that would be difficult considering the fact that you have dry skin and don't really struggle with these problems personally. Love the informative content and will be coming back for more :)

I see many people lately saying they damp with tap water after cleansing, using a toner is a more efficient way to do it, because they're actually formulated to penetrate better the epidermis compared to plain water.

I came back to this video, and really enjoyed it the second time around as well, because when I started to look into hanbang skincare I noticed that almost none of these brands carry an exfoliating product of any kind. So how does the typical korean woman adress dead skincells?
I have personally tried a lot of different varieties, from gel cleansers with microbeads, to powders (that are SO HARSH!) and exfoliating toners with aha/bha/pha and have get to find anything I'm truly happy with. In western media an exfoliant is described as an extemly important step to adress dead skincells, dullness, pore size, clogged pores and more.
This leads to my questions: Is this step unnecessary when using the correct products? WHAT are these products? And why does exfoliating look so different in korean(hangbang) skincare when compared to western countries?
I'm eagerly awating your next video and hope to see you update more frequently on instagram! Perhaps with what products your currently using, what you do, other than skincare, to get a healthy complexion and short and sweet product highlights :)

Thank you for the video Odile! While I agree that 10-step skincare routine seems exaggerated it does seem like the importance of beauty and skincare for Korean people is at least slightly understated in the video. Seoul is being known as a plastic capital surgery of the world and the amount of clinics in the city surpasses all imagination. Men and women frequently get face treatments which are cheap and accessible - pore cleansing, skin tightening, skin whitening, Botox, etc. Unrealistic beauty standards, discrimination and lookism are recognised as very serious society problems.

This video that you made is incredibly interesting! Thank you for also pointing out that for the western culture, everything that is 'different' is automatically labelled as 'strange, weird or bizarre'. It always have been this way throughout history. This shows so well how very unkind and close-minded the point of view of the western market/culture is, and how they can objectify other cultures to make a profit out of it. The Korean skincare industry, has been the only one that could really respond to my sensitive-skin's needs back in the days, and because of that I'll keep on being loyal to it. They always formulate product with the consumer's skin concerns in mind.
I had the luck to be introduced to K-beauty by a very passionate woman who was really advocating for the Korean culture as a whole, and trying actively to deconstruct those myths. And I can totally see how wrong those western articles are, as they create a totally wrong picture just to make more profit on selling more cosmetics to an influenceable audience.
The western market is more about marketing: how can I put a fancy 'gold or caviar' name on it and sell it for 200euros, while 90% of the actual formula is fillers that do nothing and are actually very cheap to make. And what frustrate me even more, is the western brand's army of influencers who will push K-beauty as "Chinese cheap sh*t" while they promote very expensive skincare that do nothing. Like you said, it is very dehumanizing and truly rude and disrespectful towards such a beautiful and rich culture.

For me, the 10-step skincare routine is a map to navigate. There are many different products available in the market and it can be overwhelming for the customer when to use each of them. Our skin changes constantly, and also its necessities, so the 10-step routine let’s you know exactly where to introduce a new kind of product in the routine.
It’s not that we need to do all 10 steps, it’s just a flexible system to customize your skincare routine to your current needs.

I get SO many messaged from young people buying this 10 step kits without understanding what that stuff is even supposed to do (or worse, wrecking their skin by introducing all these products at the same time), so I figured it was about time to put this story to rest.

While the idea of the 10 Step Korean Skincare took the "West" by storm it also didn't help when some Korean influences joined in. Of course, these people may mostly cater to Western audiences which may have been why. It gave a further of validity to the claims.
Now, as a collective, we're more educated about skincare. It's helping people to focus on targeting specific issues. At the time skincare was only part of a greater frenzy in the beauty community. The excessive makeup hauls, the skincare hacks (spoiler: just don't), and so on. In such an environment I'm not surprised that the misinformation about Korean skincare caught on and spread so broadly.

LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! The Orientalism part is spot on, and now the west is capitalising this, e.g. cica as an ingredient... Also the standard and trend of "vegan" "cruelty free" "sustainable" are also in some way done in very damaging way, which is again rooted from such orientalism mindset. Not saying that we should not thrive for those, but how it is done can be far better implemented inclusively...

I definitely use at least 10 products morning and evening in my dry dry dry dehydrated aging skin and it’s better for it . But that’s because I need all that hydration and unless I spend 100s of dollars on one moisturizer, I need the different products .
It’s my skin and age . Young girls only need to cleanse a moisturizer and a sunscreen ( and maybe spot treatments if they have acne )

I remember my mom always rolling her eyes at anything Soko when we used to live abroad. She always said the only decent east asian products they sold there were Japanese products and even those had jacked up prices and always told me it's preferable to buy local or UK/USA/French products when one is overseas because it's unlikely that an ignorant westerner would know what "proper" east asian skincare products are. Keep in mind this was more than 10 years ago but I don't think this advice is outdated yet.
