  • Introducing the best Korean anti aging skin care brands that won’t break the bank.
    Hanbang skincare is a Traditional Korean skincare practice that involves the use of herbal prescriptions and formulation techniques based on original principles of Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) with incorporation of modern science. The main application of these principles lies in anti aging skincare, and many Korean anti aging brands are based on Hanbang philosophy.
    Due to a number of particular factors I’ll discuss in this video, many of these brands come at a pretty steep price point. In this video however, I’ll introduce you to the best entry-level traditional Korean anti aging skin care brands.
    This video is the second and last part of a mini series on Hanbang skin care. In the first part I discussed the characteristics of Hanbang cosmetics and the principles they are based on. Part 1 of my introduction to Hanbang Skincare is available at the link below
    • Introduction to Hanban...
    I tried to keep these videos accessible and easy to follow even for casual skincare users with no prior knowledge of TKM or Oriental Medicine, however if you’d like to take a deep dive into the topic, I also wrote a very detailed article on Hanbang skincare on my website:
    themonodist.com/2021/12/17/in...
    All original sources used to write this video are listed at the bottom of the article.

    There is a Nature Collection store in my local H-Mart plaza that sells lots of Hanbang skincare that I've been curious to try, but don't want to pull the trigger on spending so much (especially as their return policy is very strict). I appreciate this video to learn more about these products and more about them before buying! I'm curious on finding products for brightening/helping calm redness and dark spots.

      Yehwadam has an Artemisia line that is great to calm redness! If you're looking to lighten hyperpigmentation they have a line called Pure Brightening that is designed to be an entry-level version of Whoo's Gongjinhyang Seol and it’s pretty good!

      I’ve heard about the German one too , I even bought it. However I think Korean made it famous and I still to this day only like Korean bb creams. I’ve only came across on western brand that somewhat can resemble a Korean bb cream. But even the ones directly imported to western country isn’t the original Korean formula. I think part of it is because western has different preferences and needs than East Asians… ie the whitening aspect of bb cream etc.

      @OdileMonodTheMonodist  Před 2 lety +7

      Thank you! Beauty of Joseon falls in the category of Hanbang-inspired brands since they use traditional ingredients formulated in a modern way. I don't mind their products per se, but I do find their marketing choices to be quite questionable to be completely honest. In my video on Korean Ginseng I raised the issue that they were making anti-aging claims without sharing details on which variety of ginseng they were using (long story short: not all of them have anti-aging properties) and six months after that video they got fined for making unauthorised marketing claims like I suspected ( I talked about it here twitter.com/odilemonod/status/1347485680826425351?t=ydIfS0CWmx-H8ZMnVUjigw&s=19). It would have been fine if they just promoted their serum an anti-oxidant product, but I'm not too fond of companies making regulated claims without knowing what they're doing 🤷‍♀️

    I'm very interested in the Hyobidam Fermented Cream, but I'm wondering if it's suitable for those without dry skin. I have normal skin, and I generally prefer light, water gel moisturizers even in winter. I'm currently using the Donginbi Red Ginseng Moisture & Firming Emulsion, and it's working perfectly as my final step at night. I wouldn't want to add a much richer product to my routine.
    So I'm a little conflicted. I'm greatly enjoying some of your Hanbang recommendations, but I'm wondering if you have any insight on the experiences of those who have mature skin that's also normal/oily skin.
    I'm also very curious about the "for Men" product lines all of these brands seem to have. Are they equivalent quality? Because the overall esthetic and the fragrance descriptions appeal to me a lot more.
    Thank you for all your excellent content! Happy Holidays

    • @OdileMonodTheMonodist

      Sooryehan has a lighter version of their Hyobidam line designed for oily and combination skin, it’s called Hyobidam Water Spring. Same main ingredients and technology, just lighter formulas. The cream in particular is especially popular, it’s one of their top 3 bestsellers along with the standard Hyobidam Fermented Cream and their Ginseng essence. From what you describe, you might like the consistency of that cream because it's really fresh and gel-like.
      Regarding the men skincare lines, they are indeed less oily than the standard lines since men tend to have oilier skin than women. I haven't personally tried Sooryehan's men line but my spouse uses the men lines from Sulwhasoo and Whoo and really likes them because they're nourishing without being heavy/greasy.

      The two approaches are not necessarily mutually exclusive! A few followers actually told me they like to combine Hanbang skincare and retinoids. Since Hanbang skincare works mainly on skin resilience, it can help you contrast the downsides of retinoids and reduce potential irritation/flaking. I don't tolerate strong retinoids so I generally prefer the Hanbang approach and occasionally add a mild retinoid to the mix, but you can absolutely combine the two!

      They fall in the category of Hanbang-inspired brands.
      I talked about the difference between Traditional Hanbang brands and Hanbang-inspired brands in part 1 of this series, basically Hanbang-inspired brands use some ingredients from Traditional Korean Medicine but they follow modern formulation techniques without altering the original properties of the raw materials, an approach that is closer to Western herbalism rather than Hanbang.
      The formulation principle and processing techniques used in Traditional Hanbang are known to alter the properties and effects of the original ingredients in a way to target a specific condition (the most notable example is certainly ginseng that has different properties and biochemical characteristics depending on how it’s processed).
      As mentioned in part 1, there are many Hanbang remedies made of the exact same ingredients but formulated in different ways (and consecutively, ratios) and this affects the final use of a formula. These particular preparation methods are what sets apart Traditional Korean Medicine from Western herbalism so when a brand doesn't follow them, they can classify at most as "Hanbang-inspired".
      This is also why the Korean cosmetic advertising guidelines that I covered in the article on my website, make the distinction between cosmetics based on traditional remedies (as in, blends) and cosmetics that simply use traditional ingredients.

      @@OdileMonodTheMonodist thank you so much, I am 39 and looking for something to firm the skin and combat the signs of aging. The history of whoo is not a cheap brand so I'm trying to spend my money wisely to get the results. But it's not that easy to find information online about their products.Would you consider making a video (or post) on this brand, getting bit more into details about their products and who are they for or what age/problem group? It would be so much helpful. And thank you for everything you posted by now. You are doing great job and it is so informative. I really appreciate it

      Hello. I have the night cream on right now. I've been using it on and off this year. I do really like it, but I can only use it in the cooler months. It melts off my face in warmer temps, so I could never wear it in the daytime either, I have normal to dry skin. Its a beautiful texture, and I must say, my skin looks great the next day. Odile has convinced me to try the eye cream. Do some research, and see if you'd like to try it. Merry Christmas.

I only featured one product per brand otherwise this video would have been 45 minute long 😅 I will make a dedicated video on Missha's Hanbang lines in 2022 where I will cover more products, but long story short yes I do really like that night cream! It's extremely rich and noushing and makes skin baby soft the morning after. Overall my favourite Hanbang lines by Missha are Geum Sul and Chogongjin.

    • @OdileMonodTheMonodist
      @OdileMonodTheMonodist  Před 2 lety

      Unless you're sensitive to fragrance (it's a trigger for some people with Rosacea, but not for everyone), yes absolutely. The positive thing about these brands is that they make really rich products that help support thin skin with a weakened skin barrier function. Some brands like Yehwadam, Sooryehan and Missha also have lines that can help you soothe redness associated with rosacea.

      @OdileMonodTheMonodist  Před 2 lety +2

      Yehwadam used to be a sub-brand of The Face Shop (which is also owned by LG), around 2/3 ago LG decided to make it a separate brand along with all the TFS sub-brands like Dr.Belmeur, fmgt etc so on some websites you might find it still listed under The Face Shop.

    • @OdileMonodTheMonodist

      Overall I do like Missha's Hanbang lines, I just featured one representative product per brand otherwise this video would have been 45 minutes long 😅. Missha's Yei Hyun line is the line I used the least because it's designed as a preventive anti-aging line for younger people, I find the products in that line to be too lightweight for me (even when I was in my 20s!) but I guess it you're young and you have normal / combo skin you might enjoy it more than I did.

I've been getting a lot of blackheads when I never used to have any.
