- Falcon 9 / Iridium 4 Launch on 12/22/17.
Shot handheld from my driveway with a Canon Vixia HF G20.
I heard about the scheduled launch 30 minutes prior and pulled up the SpaceX webcast on my laptop a few minutes before.
At T minus a few minutes I decided on a whim to grab the camera. Didn't think to turn auto-focus off (oops).
We're approximately 100 miles SE as the crow flies from Vandenberg. Local sunset was approximately 40 minutes before launch, making for spectacular lighting conditions.
My video starts around T + 1:31 at which point the Falcon 9 is going approx. 2145 Km/h and is at an altitude of 19Km.
At 40 Seconds into my video where the Falcon 9 crosses the contrail of a passing plane, the Falcon 9 is going approximately 5,000 Km/h and is at an altitude of 47Km....WELL above the passing plane that is probably at an altitude range of 5-10Km.

Why has this had so few views? I agree with everybody else saying this is the best capture thus far.
34k now
David Douglas Stuart ikr, and I thought I had took a good video from it
Almost 1 mill now
@Robert Power 920k one day later, hum.
youtube algo decide
Dang, that was quite the view you had... cold gas thrusters making some sea creature visuals... Thanks for sharing!
The moon makes it even better.
Great science fiction material, but it is all real!! What a great time to be alive.
This is one of the most beautiful things I've had the joy of experiencing vicariously.
The space between the trees, the sun that reflects what you're filming, the clean atmosphere and the cmos sensor device, and of course you. All in the right place ! !!!
This is the most incredible launch capture I think I've ever seen!
I saw the staging event from the Citadel Outlets in Commerce. Everybody was freaking out thinking it was the end of the world. It's not my rocket, but I knew it was going so I told as many as I could what it was. Nice shootin', Jim. Have to agree this is one of the best I've seen.
WsdBella
Hey Citadel I love shopping there haha great place
Yeh
What is making the rings tho? And what is the point of this rocket?
I saw a similar phenomenon way back in 1973, It was a rocket launch from Womera Rocket Range in South Australia. I was in the Northern Flinders Ranges at the time , about 160 miles away. The colours well truly beautiful. Aquaramarine blue and green 'wind sock' shape with orange shape ovals inside it.
The timing was perfect. Sun, moon everything. Great movie!
Absolutely AWESOME video! I love how you captured so much of the stage 1 boost back maneuvering burns... all those little smoke rings. BEAUTIFUL!
Best viewed if you watch the SpaceX webcast video first to follow the launch phases, and then watch this.
OMG! Incredible shot of the first stage, second stage, fairing sep, and the moon in one frame. 👍
Great photography. I didn't think it was possible to see the stage separation as it is so high up. This is the best launch and videos I have ever seen and I watched the Mercury launches. That must be at least 70 miles away. So cool to see the vacuum engine running while the first stage is coming back.
Beautiful footage, thank you so much for sharing.
Incredible video of the launch. Thanks for the upload!
Spectacular catch Mr. Mudgett. Solid Gold - platinum perhaps - hope it brings you great blessings. Noctilucense. Wild. Best visual that illustrates the process and what it looks like.
I like it when the first stage relights and changes dramatically the plume
This is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. Thank you
Spectacular footage, man! Well done!
Incredible capture! Best I've seen so far!
Jim Mudgett: give yourself a hearty pat on the back! Best footage I've seen. I saw the rocket's path from the freeway driving to Dodger Stadium for a Cirque du Soleil show, and you captured the scene. THANK you for turning your camera the best way to catch it all.
Great video that seperation looked insane. I'm sure people that did not know about the launch were losing their shit when they saw that
I was on my way home in long beach California and saw this!! It was fuckin insane!
www.GPcarAudio.com there’s a video when cars are on the highway and they were focusing on the thing in the sky and that caused a major crash
looks so fucking weird theres some clever people with all these inventions and shit like wtf
The first stage burns after SEP and the plume effects are so beautiful...
This really is an awesome video. I got the opportunity to watch an Antares rocket launch from distance last year. I was staying on the outer banks and it launched from Wallops Island. The view was similar. It was really awesome watching it streak out over the dark ocean, as is your video! Thanks!
Great work. Really well done. I wish I could have been there to see it. And thank you especially for not talking over the video which seems to be the hallmark of any vid these days!
One of the best shots out there right now!
I got up at 3 AM some years ago to watch a Vandenberg launch from near the Fresno area. I saw a tiny red dot come up from the horizon and then it bloomed out a bit, got faint and disappeared. They had a launch window from 3:00 AM to about 3:15 AM.. they were on time!
Thank you for this video, Jim! This is the first time I’ve seen the launch from your particular angle (I live in Orange County, CA) and for the first time (@ 2:16) I saw that at least one (maybe both) of the payload fairings have cold gas thrusters. I never thought about having to control the fairings (which seems obvious now) in order to get them to fall back to earth in a relatively predictable place. I have not seen it before so it never occurred to me. Watching your video gave me a new discovery so thank you again for sharing!! Well done!
Es lo mejor que he visto en mi vida y tube la fortuna de verlo dos veces
Brilliant, right time, right place, right weather,Congratulations..
You sir should keep your eyes to the skies! Best documentation and good quality.
Thanks mate great footage, best ive seen so far
Wow you guys are so lucky to see things like this in the USA. What a truly amazing sight thanks for shearing we dont get see stuff like this in uk 👌👌👌👌
BEST FOOTAGE YET...
Used to see launches such as this as a kid in the San Fernando Valley. Rocketdyne was always testing solid fuel thrusters and the like, we would occasionally see a rocket engine tested on a rocket over the pacific ocean. Big amoeba like plume that was iridescent and both breath taking and frightful at the same time for a kid. This is a great shot for a hand held camera..well done
WOW , most beautiful rocket launch I've ever seen :0
My mom said it was a sign from god, my dad said it was a nuke from Korea but me and my brothers were like SANTAAA!! 😂
Perspective lol
Some Random Person wow looks like your dad really wanted to cheer your fam up😉
💀
Hahaha
Moms right! Lol
I wish I could have seen this as it happened! Such a beautiful sight :)
Great job. Absolutely the best video.
I got a chance to see it in Phoenix! It was eerie to see such a striking bright light to the west!
Well done video...the best on CZcams I think.
Back during the cold war, seeing such a sight was not unusual. That was 30+ years ago, so many people weren't even born then. I have not seen this sight for about 20 years. To get the effect we saw on this one, the launch has to be just a little after sunset, so that the sun still shines at altitude and lights up the con trail against the dark sky so that it looks like it is glowing. Very interesting sight...maybe a little scary if you don't know what it is!
by Dave in Orange County, CA.
Seen this fly over San Carlos Apache Tribe in AZ!
I thought I was tripping lol until I did more research...thanks for sharing!
Thank you for sharing! Wonderful video
That's a pretty good camera you shot this with. Very sharp and detailed and hardly any background noise at all!
esta Câmera e boa mesmo !
OH and yea this is the best footage there is!!! great job, great camera!
Now that's the most awesome thing i've seen today...
Beautiful capture! Thanks
Ive always thought they do this in daytime. Learn something new everyday!
That be so amazing to see that in person. very nice video.
I wish I was there to witness it. Just Breathtaking.
At 2:14 I think that is a cold gas thruster firing on of the fairings. And then another at 2:35. This would make it the first time we've seen the active control systems in action!
Must've been an amazing view from the airplane that flew by it
MichaelangeloMacklin
What airplane?
Fantastic!!! Thanks for sharing your beautiful view. What a great video.
do you mind if I park in your driveway for the next one?
Great footage ) didn't think you would see the nose fairing coming off what a treat )
Outstanding capture. 👍
I hope the scientists and engineers who make this launch happen see this video and see the wonder of their work.
Bloody clear shot mate.
So beautiful magic. ..Thanks for video
WOW,, best video EVER!
Wooooww!!! That was incredible!! Man good catch!!
Incredible capture. Contrats. Even got ACS puffs from the fairings. Wonder if they recovered them.
belas imagens ! parabéns a quem filmou lua linda também , como eu queria poder ver pessoalmente um lançamento de foguete !!
Ninguém notou que a nave soltou duas partes e uma ficou pulsando ejetando um material luminoso em círculos?
The best capture ever!
When you just happen to have a good HD quality Camera
THIS LAUNCH WAS ANNOUNCED ON FRIDAY.... SOME PEOPLE WERE PREPARED
Haha no
Let's just thank him for making this record.
There are not that rare or even very expensive, his model listed isn't much more then a newer game console.
DJ which one?
Fantastic, Jim.
Beautiful! Thank You!
My parents saw this last night and thought it was some sort of alien spaceship. They wouldn't listen to me when I told them it wasn't. Thanks for this video, now I can prove them it was something reasonable.
Surreal, great shot bro
You caught an amazing view ! Thanks for sharing my kids enjoyed it!
Wow. Nice footage dude!
Шикарные кадры!!!!
The exhaust gases are very bright because the sunlight is reflecting off of it. The rocket launched just after sunset so the sky is dark while the gases above the atmosphere are very bright
Великолепное видео! Спасибо Вам, очень впечатляюще, спасибо.
sick vid best one so far
I was on my front porch with my dog and saw this and it was amazing.
I live in Arizona and saw this from over the mountain
Let's hope there will be more and more of such views in the future.
I noticed this while driving in San Diego. I had no idea what it was and I was freaking out a little.
Wow man! What a show.
Wow great video. At 2:17 you can see one of the payload fairings thrusting which they are trying to recover. Great video!
Done great footage, despite the tree at the beginning. Thanks for uploading this, really appreciated. .
Great shot Jim.
Alot of people seem to be wondering why the launch looked like this.
It’s because of the zero air pressure in space. That explains the extremely high expansion ratio from the engine nozzle, which causes the huge plume. It's bright because the exhaust is water vapour illuminated by the sun, which disappeared into the horizon just before the launch.
Jere Kelonen .Thank you for your comment with very good explanation. By the way this video is great .!!!
Jere Kelonen what was that thing in the middle at 1:27 ?
Jere Kelonen. It wasn’t in Space, although the air pressure at altitude would be less than at the surface. The main reason for the large plume is the the massive amount of fuel used, which produces a vast quantity of H2O ( steam/water-vapour)
Those are reaction control thrusters (very fast, reactive small thrusters for minor corrections) from what I assume is the first stage, normally the first stage is landed on a barge out in the ocean but this cargo was too heavy, so I assume they did this for data.
Isaaaccc That was the first stage of the rocket separating. The "bursts" you see are probably the minor correctional thrusters designed to stabilize it and change its course for landing. These are reusable rockets, remember?
Awesome bro. One of the best I have seen. Good capture, you deserve more views
Wow this is beautiful
Stage separation actually occurred closer to 54 seconds into this video, not after 1:07 as narrated. _That_ warbly effect was caused by the first stage restart and the collision between the exhaust gases of both stages.
Nice shot getting the moon in frame too!
It so crazy to think that for a moment the whole SoCal was united in viewing this once in a life time view - from temecula
So cool! Thank you for the video
Nice shot , very perfect view 👍
They should announce launches like this in Los Angeles area. Saw it live as when I had no idea what it was. The missile was big like this in the sky over Porter Ranch. And the sky was very clear. Pretty
Excellent video
Bravo! Best filming of this yet! If this was all hand held, then you should be employed in film as stedicam man!
Finally my home town getting reconized
Happy Holidays
thanks - excellent video
saw it up here in Alaska panhandle
Epic sky art.
Incredible video, view of a lifetime. Always use manual focus at night!
Nice video! The scene looks like a sci-fi movie.
I watched a launch from Virginia. Well below my horizon in n.e. Pennsylvania. I could not believe the speed of that thing! I know if it were aimed at me, I'd just say goodbye, no place to hide.
Stopped by to show your channel some Love thank you for sharing
you can see how the gas thrusters work....really good capture!
