WARNING - It's addicting! Radios breed and multiply. Next thing you know, you'll have 10 radios, 15 antennas, coax coming out of your ears, be into SDR, DMR, and then it spirals from there! - Justin W6JTN
The sad reality.
LOL
I need a little help moblie use of ham.
Thanks for the “too late” warning. 😔
Great advice, Michael! When I help people get their license I always give them the same three steps, although in a different order:
1) Schedule your test, even if you are not ready for it. Having the test on the calendar will give you that extra pressure to study.
2) Download an app, spend 30-45 minutes a day minimum going through flashcards with the goal memorizing the question pool. Do not worry about fully grokking the content, just memorize memorize memorize. While the pool seems large, at just over 400 questions, many of them are simple rewordings of the same questions. The daily study time doesn't have to be all in one chunk. I recommend people just pull out their phone for 5-10 minutes at a time when they are in the bathroom, on the bus, waiting in a line, laying in bed, etc. By doing that, it's typically quite easy to create the required study time without even realizing it. Give yourself at least 4 or 5 days of study before your exam. You should set a goal of passing practice exams at a level of 80% or higher after 4 or 5 days - this means you are ready for the exam. If your exam is still days or weeks away, you can throttle back your studying and just focus on running one or two practice exams each day until your exam. This will keep the information fresh.
3) Take the test, pass, and take the General exam which the testers will very likely offer up right away. It doesn't matter that you haven't studied for it, much of the content is the same as the Technician exam and you may just luck out and get the license class upgrade on the same day. If you fail General, big deal, you still have a Technician license and if you decide to go for an upgrade in the future, you have already gotten a free taste of the exam.
Then of course, there's the most important step: 4) GET ON THE AIR! This is where the real learning starts. The tests do not actually teach or test you about practical use of the radio. This is only learned by getting yourself on the air and using your new equipment!
Congrats on getting your license Michael!
I'll catch you on the radio one of these days!

I too recently got my HAM license. Thanks to this video. I downloaded the app and studied and took the exam within 3 weeks. Passed last Saturday.
I've put off doing anything with the test and I've had my radio for 2 years. It's a Kenwood that's mounted in my truck. It does a billion things and now I think it's time to start trying to get my license.
Congrats to all the new hams. Now you need to participate in a field day from a very remote location. Now thats fun.
Thanks for putting the class together. Although I didn't attend (couldn't get time off). I did some self study and took the test locally and passed. If it wasn't for Overland bound, I probably wouldn't have been motivated. Thanks again.
Thanks for all the content!!!! Blue Line Overland here!!!!
Congrats on your ticket. Just preparing for mine and my wife agreed to join me! Setting up our TJ for kauai. Pls post more ham vids!!!
I would say, after being an extra class for 10 years now... keep using it ! you will forget everything if you stop. its a great skill and you should keep it up ! congrats to all the news hams ! 73's W1BU !
Great video showing people what they need to do. I am going to share this with my friends. Thanks for sharing with all of us.
Highly recommend attending a HAM CRAM session time, money and effort well spent.
Got a uv5r to start out. Also got a programming cable. Pretty excited to start it
VE2VLZ got my license 2 month ago for the same reasons you just said ,thanks for spreading the word 👍👍👍👍but for people outside the US the application is not good as every country have there own rules as i am from canada 🇨🇦 we have slight differences so for fellow Canadians check with you local ham radio clubs ,this is how i took my course and passed the exam ,Thanks again more and more i want to join the Overland Bound community 👍👍
Congratulations on your license. If we make a small count we would have the following device on our board or close to it: Radios (Ham, CB and in some cases a scanner), 2 tablets (one with the navigator another with the data of the car, cell phone, Spot (or another with similar features), switches for off road lights, etc.
It would be interesting to see some setup that some people already have to know their initiatives.
Congrats, and thanks for highlighting the best communications method available. 73, de N0IV.
OK FINE... I'll get it already. I've been meaning to get it for a while. This video helps. Thanks!
Super helpful vid! Thanks
There is a session January 12th in San Francisco on Gough St. My spot is reserved.
Great to see you guys pushing for more people in the community to get their HAM license... KN4QHI...
It was great meeting at the cram and I studied a little a few day before and I passed. If you are not good at tests I would recommend a ham cram. OLB 4417
Congratulations! Are you going to apply for a specific Ham license name from the FCC?
Getting mine soon!
Thank you Michael for putting this out there! Thank you for adding that last bit of information about learning how to properly conduct yourself on Ham frequencies. Everyone needs to realize that they may not and should not speak like a CBer on Ham radio. Inappropriate language is a BIG no no. Also, using CB lingo will tag you as a NOOB or a "LID". Great Video. OB#1261 :)
work on getting your general license. Mobile HF is a lot of fun. And works when your out of total communication
Maurice Austin Couldn’t agree more!
Need a Ham cram in Phoenix
I just watched the video and bought the app. I recently learned about HAM am interested in case of an emergency i want to prepare. I recently been researching prepping and SHTF. other than the app what else can i do to learn. I am in the Electrical Union and am a year away from my Journeyman certification. so i have electrical backround
I'm looking forward to getting the kids to get their licenses! Adults might not be so intimidated if little 10 year olds have passed the same test.
I've been procrastinating, gotta see if they do a cram class here in Orlando.
Ive had Technician for about 25 years but just got my General last year.. HF! its pretty easy to get signed up here in West Palm Beach and take test.. even if you dont do the cram, just to the app the Technician class is nothing to fear, just do it ! get behind it ! :D
Is there one in Orlando?
Great video!!!!!
Very nice! N7VIA, 73’s
If you move to another state does your license need to be updated?
Says need to purchase full app when you launch it
Can you tell me how to get that App? Where do I go on the internet?
HAM Radio is fantastic. I have had license for 28 years. Also when you get your license, something you should do is study on how to use your so you radio so you don't cause interference to other HAMs. Remember there are a lot more HAMs out there who aren't part of your group.
Congratulations & Have Fun

Way to go guys now you get to learn how to play radio. With that 400 you can work digital and analog. Great fun .🤗
I've downloaded the prep test app. And I've tried and tried but I just can't seem to pass the test I don't know what to do and there are no classes down here in south Louisiana that I can go to to learn more about it. Don't know what else to do but I'd really like to get into it just don't know how I guess I'm not smart enough. Could you please send me or give me some suggestions thank you
Michael what is your call?
Mark N9BTP just getting started in overlanding
Does that app work for Canada testing? Is HAM an international standardized test?
Can you take the test online?
Congrats on getting your Tech ticket! Don't stop there, get your General. The General opens up a world of options to you for comms. MOST OF ALL... make sure Corrie gets her license. In an emergency, your first instinct will be a desire to get in contact with your spouse/partner/loved one. Have fun with the hobby and Get On The Air! #ARRL #AmateurRadioFieldDay - Scott AC2FV
Congratulations on getting your ham license.
The Technician license is ok, but the General license is much better. You can use the ARRL app. To study for both class of licenses, a lot of the questions on the General test are very similar to the Technician test just a little more in depth. You can take both tests the same day first the Technician, pass it then take the General.
Good luck to those going to take your tests.

Question, do you know if there is any special provisions made for blind or visually impaired people to get their license?
I got my HAM licenses after reading about how HAM helped thousands of people after Hurricane Katrina. I decided to get one in the event that my city has a major catastrophic event, I will have a way to communicate when cell towers go down.
Like to know ALL costs involved in a getting a license and maintaining a license.
Didn't know a "HAM cram existed." Great info.
Why would I need a license to use the ham radio could I just use it without the License I don’t understand can someone explain to me
What tests did you take. There are 3 tests for the different licenses
Can you take it online because well covid
It's a great thing to have it's alot of fun 73s from KD8ZRL
So to get a license is to take multiple choice test and thats it?
Hi, I was supposed to be at that event but I was called away at the last moment. Will there be another event soon? Johan OB#14779
Yeah yeah, let's get down to brass tacks. How do I get that hoodie in black?
Hahaha! Hey bro! store.overlandbound.com/collections/shirts-apparel/products/outfit-explore-pullover-hoodie?variant=14083660742722
Overland Bound my man...
Is there a app for the Extra test? I already have my general license..
Try www.hamexam.org.
There is an app called Ham Test Prep that I used for tech and general. I also like the W4EEY CZcams channel - they have full length classes for all 3 licenses. I plan to seriously study for my extra ticket after the holidays.
Any app suggestions for android users ?
Awesome video! 73's KM6AZZ
What do the people on HAM radio talk about?
ARRL website says
"Exam Candidates: You are REQUIRED to register in the FCC CORES system and receive a Federal Registration Number (FRN) before exam day." What is this? You didn't mention anything about it.
I'm in oregon, is there anything like overland bound here? I've used 10 meter mobil radios converted to 11 meter. I know.... but I'm ready to right my wrongs and get Licensed now. Anyone able to give me information about where I can test in oregon? Thank you!
Yes! Lots of Overland Bound Members in Oregon. Head to our forums and contact @brien He's a great resource! overlandbound.com/forums
Thanks for the video, however I'm still confused about a few things. Does this type of license give you the ability to use other types of radios also? I have gone to the FCC website before and nothing really makes sense. There's so many different licenses to apply for, which one is best? What is the difference between this type and a GMRS license? Or are they the same?
GMRS you just pay a fee and it is separate from this. GMRS is a fine radio, but few have it (I’m one).
You want the Ham Technician class, different from GMRS, google ham cram in your area.
Thanks for the replies. What radio would you recommend? I've been looking at a Kenwood TM-281A.
GMRS is terrific and many of us have both ham and GMRS licenses. GMRS has some power and capabilities limitations that really make amateur radio much more functional. It’s absolutely worth it. Regarding radios, Yaesu, Kenwood, and Icom all make great gear. I’m a Yaesu guy and I love my gear. I have the FTM-400 and it’s awesome. I love being able to use Fusion and get digital voice quality with distance and bearing to other radios on the LCD.
Ham cram it's the way. I got in about 6 hours. KK6ZIK 73's
Is this a fcc general radio operator license needed for ham?
This process is meant for the Technician license - though often, if you are looking to upgrade to General or Extra, it can be done on the same test day. Check with the testing site and personnel for details.
The general is incredibly fun but not required. The technician is the entry and fine for most overlanders. That said, it’s pretty cool having a point-to-point conversation from Idaho to New Zealand from the driver’s seat of your FJ!
Very helpful👍

Forgot to send my call N3YJ
Corey get your ham license.
My names Cory lol guess I have to get my ham liscence
Iamjake? Anybody know what happened to him?
Memorize.
Word association not study.
Read question then ONLY the right answer for all questions 3-4 times in one day. Take the test the next day.
35 question multiple choice 26 correct to pass.
Never look at an incorrect answer.
Great suggestions, just add only looking at correct answers.
It’s not about leaning HAM radio, it’s about getting 26 of 35 correct.
Also take Tech & General test consecutively on the same day.

See you’ll at Overland East!
only ten but want a license
I didn't know you needed a license
And why do you need a license for a radio?
GMRS Radio license Is $70. For 10 years per family. No Test
Very limited repeater availability, UHF only, and limited equipment setup. HAM gives you up to 1,500 watts legal across many more frequences (although mobile setups are usually 50-100 watts, but are VHF, UHF, and HF). Sure, there's a test, but the test is either free or under $20. GMRS license is another tool to throw in, but don't compare it as an alternative to HAM, it's not even close.
NERDS!
And proud of it.
I'm an extra. ;)
