Thank you! I passed my technician's test yesterday. I'm retired so I did three days of marathon watching your videos. It worked. I cycled through your entire Technician's course three times! I watched your videos and when you read the questions I read them aloud with you. So I was seeing them, hearing them, and saying them all at once.I think that is a good way to learn. Because I passed the tech's test the examiner offered to let me take the General test. I knew I wasn't ready but since it would not cost extra I decided it would be a good chance to get familiar with the General test. To my surprise I did get 21 out of thirty-five correct. While it wasn't enough to pass the General test it did give me an idea of what to expect. I have to say that I had no previous experience with ham radio other than when I was a kid I had a cousin who had one. (THAT was a very long time ago lol) Just wanted to say that I appreciate your direct, no-nonsense, and clear approach to teaching these classes. So again, thank you!
Hey. I'm kind of in the same position as you were. I'm just starting out and have tried a couple of other types of learning. Kind of having a hard time with retention. As of the 29 of may I am 13, and thought that it would be handy to have this knowledge. I hope to get my license before the first of December, or maybe sometime this month!

Gary great videos, very clear and concise. I was doing the self study and just taking the test via the QRZ site and supplemented by the ARRL Red Ham Radio license test and was just trying to remember the answers without really understanding the material. Got poor results with my testing and didn't pass the technician test twice. I was 2 short the first test and 1 short the second test from passing. I watched all 9 lessons and did the redbook test one time and took the exam the next day and got 34 out 35 thanks to you. You made everything seem so logical and understandable. Thank you for providing such great material and in doing it in such a pleasant manner. I don't have my call sign yet, but would love to make contact someday and thank you personally. I ordered the book direct from ARRL figuring to support them. No testing is available till January so will binge watch these over the holidays. HAM radio seems like a better prep over Satellite phone for our times. If the grid goes out, a lot of folks will be hunting for their relatives.

I have watched a few of these classes on other CZcams channels hoping to learn what I can and maybe I can pass the exam and get a license. This is the first one I have seen that made a genuine and thorough effort to define and explain some of the acronyms associated with amateur radio. RTTY for example, i had no clue what it meat until now. I am now encouraged to order the textbook and hopefully move forward thanks to this great class. I had honestly about given up on it.
Thank you! I started Saturday, ordered the “text book” and it arrived Sunday. I was aiming for taking the test in late December, but by Tuesday I felt I was ready for the November Wednesday test date at my testing location… I passed with one wrong answer. Then the test people offered the opportunity to try the General Class exam! I guess you had enough extra info and I picked up enough perusing the text book to pass that, too, although I did miss a few more questions. Now I think I better actually study the General Class material, and I have ambitions to learn and seek the Extra.

Great video. To-the-point. Concise. But please... Look at the waveform when you're making the video and look for spots where the volume changes drastically! Normalize the volume, please. I lost my hearing permanently @ 14:50.
I had an RM chief (radioman) years ago in the Navy that told us the term "ham" radio operator was a reference to the poor (ham fisted) morse skills of amateur radio operators. Supposedly the military and professional radio operators didn't think much of the amateurs.

I got my FCC GROL plus ship RADAR endorsement before getting my Technician class amateur radio license. Frustratingly, I haven't been getting my engineering or electronics technician jobs. I got into HAM to keep my mind active doing radio projects and I can include them on my resume or job interview.

If you are a prepper watching to be secret among a group of friends and family, you would be wise to recruit and experience ham radio operator to join your team. All the other prepper activities will likely take your time away from learning the ends and outs of ham radio. It is a very satisfying hobby what in bad times you would be well advised to have an experience radio man living in your team.

Thank you! I really appreciate this. Of course I want to pass the exam. But I'm the type of person that likes to pull things apart and figure out the "why". I couldn't stomach the other trainings that were mindlessly reciting the correct answers. I do have one suggestion, provide a lesson plan instead of just Lesson x Part y. That way, if we need to go back and review some material, we at least know where to look.
The only issue that I have with this video is your voice going in and out. Many times I would have to turn the volume to max because I can barely hear and then scrambling to turn the volume down because your voice is too loud. Outside of that fantastic video.
I just marked all 10 lessons for the Technician classes on my playlist. I am curious. I was under the impression that there is a pool of 400 questions and 35 are selected from the pool. The videos do not cover 400 questions, so I am puzzled. Thank you again for a very well done video.
A small family of serious preppers need to know a couple of things about using two way radio in your prepper activities. First of all anything you say over any kind of transmitted radio including police radios and taxi cabs can be heard by anyone with the proper listening equipment. You know the first question for a prepper and his radio is how secret must he be? If you and your small group have decided to be hiding and secret you must use radio is very sparingly. A long range ham radio well allow you to talk around the world but he also heard around the world by just anyone. That means everything you're saying over your long range radio must be coded between you and your receiver friend in such a way said listeners cannot guess where you are and where are you hiding. This man the long range radio will have to be run by adults who can cope with cloaking their words in such a way that they will not reveal where they are located. You can create a CHEAT SHEET where code words such as the Green Valley mean something to you and only your friends. Shorter range low power walkie talkies will not have that problem as extensively but it's always present. Imagine your 7 year old daughter has an infected foot so she calls on her small radio to daddy and says I'm at the corner of green and lake street in X town.,,, call please daddy come and get me. Anyone who is hearing that call and knows that it's intersection and the town could easily be waiting for you with your daughter tied up in the trunk and you ready to be victimized. Speakers and radio transmissions is a problem for any secretive prepper. Keep that in mind when you start thinking long range radio usage.
Another problem where's secret long range radio communication is that to do that well you must have an outdoor and very visible antenna up in the air sadly. Sadly it can be seen............... bad guys can just cruise around looking for a visible long range antenna that is very easy to identify. bad guys all they need to follow the l wire from the antenna right into your hidden otherwise hidden living space. Keeping your location secret is a serious issue for any long range radio usage and of course other issues arise also.
Understand, normal ham radio usage is not meant to be secret, in fact trying to reach other hams is a part of the fun Hobbit. However if you're trying to hide during very bad times.... These are issues you must think about in advance

You can use the Law Enforcement Phonetic Alphabet but it might be confusing to foreign contact where English is a second language . NATO is recommended because it is internationally understood.
I have a question for you: my purpose to get a license is to communicate with my four families in NY and Cali. Only one license is ok for the family or each one of us should get it? Thanks
In my opinion. It aint worth getting my general after spending much money on new 2023 books and online courses. And the biggest thing I've noticed speaking on the radio You say something wrong. Its static. Or some 90yr old Elmer comes on. And its critique critique. My local ham club in Birmingham AL 146.88. From what I've seen. There mainly all Extras. And could careless about a guy thats been a Technician for the past 5yrs. Asked for help. Its buy this book. I have really tried. It took me 3 times over to pass. For me a hobby that is dying in participation. You might want to change somewhat to bring more people. Instead of pushing them away. After spending alot money on radios and what not. And no help. I will say this. After 20yrs of driving over the road big truck. I could get on and talk in an instant. No Elmer critiquing me. I went in full force in this hobby. And started losing interest. Last year 2022. I have noticed if you dont have a BIG wallet especially at the ham club or ham fest. They kinda push you away.. I have seen a 10yr girl walk in pass the tech test. And the ham club member said to me why cant you do that? Later after asking around. The little girls father was a VE. And his friend helped the girl pass. That really pissed me off.. Again boils down to MONEY .... Over and out KQ4JHQ

The pool must be at least 10 times the required number of questions.

First of all anything you say over any kind of transmitted radio including police radios and taxi cabs can be heard by anyone with the proper listening equipment. You know the first question for a prepper and his radio is how secret must he be? If you and your small group have decided to be hiding and secret you must use radio is very sparingly. A long range ham radio well allow you to talk around the world but he also heard around the world by just anyone. That means everything you're saying over your long range radio must be coded between you and your receiver friend in such a way said listeners cannot guess where you are and where are you hiding. This man the long range radio will have to be run by adults who can cope with cloaking their words in such a way that they will not reveal where they are located. You can create a CHEAT SHEET where code words such as the Green Valley mean something to you and only your friends.
Shorter range low power walkie talkies will not have that problem as extensively but it's always present. Imagine your 7 year old daughter has an infected foot so she calls on her small radio to daddy and says I'm at the corner of green and lake street in X town.,,, call please daddy come and get me. Anyone who is hearing that call and knows that it's intersection and the town could easily be waiting for you with your daughter tied up in the trunk and you ready to be victimized. Speakers and radio transmissions is a problem for any secretive prepper. Keep that in mind when you start thinking long range radio usage.
Another problem where's secret long range radio communication is that to do that well you must have an outdoor and very visible antenna up in the air sadly. Sadly it can be seen............... bad guys can just cruise around looking for a visible long range antenna that is very easy to identify. bad guys all they need to follow the l wire from the antenna right into your hidden otherwise hidden living space. Keeping your location secret is a serious issue for any long range radio usage and of course other issues arise also.
Understand, normal ham radio usage is not meant to be secret, in fact trying to reach other hams is a part of the fun Hobbit. However if you're trying to hide during very bad times.... These are issues you must think about in advance

You can use the Law Enforcement Phonetic Alphabet but it might be confusing to foreign contact where English is a second language . NATO is recommended because it is internationally understood.

Only one person needs to be licensed but they must be in control of the transceiver at all times. That said, I encourage that all get a license.
In my opinion. It aint worth getting my general after spending much money on new 2023 books and online courses.

My local ham club in Birmingham AL 146.88. From what I've seen. There mainly all Extras.
And could careless about a guy thats been a Technician for the past 5yrs.
Asked for help. Its buy this book. I have really tried. It took me 3 times over to pass. For me a hobby that is dying in participation.

I went in full force in this hobby. And started losing interest. Last year 2022.
I have noticed if you dont have a BIG wallet especially at the ham club or ham fest. They kinda push you away..
I have seen a 10yr girl walk in pass the tech test. And the ham club member said to me why cant you do that?
Later after asking around. The little girls father was a VE. And his friend helped the girl pass.
That really pissed me off.. Again boils down to MONEY ....

There are no exams planned in the near future, for good reason. Why can't the technician exam be administered over the Internet?
Perhaps because It would be too easy to cheat by getting someone else to take the exam for you.
