A simple acronym/pneumonic for creating your comm plan is what we use in the military. We call it a PACE plan.
Primary (HAM)
Alternate (GMRS)
Contingency (CB)
Emergency (Cell phone, flashing lights, semaphore etc)
Consider at least 1 Garmin inReach mini Sat Comm in the group if not everyone for emergencies
100%.. Today there is no reason for anyone to be in a situation, anywhere, where they cant contact help. Well worth the money.
I was thinking, hey Mike, nice broche
I love the comm videos (40 years of comm geeking here LOL. CB, ham, GMRS, satellite, etc). Glad you mix the comm topics in with all the other important stuff. Keep ‘em coming. 73 de N6RFI
Lovely video Mike.
Loved the mouse on your shirt :)
I know more than a few hams and non-hams who could benefit from your words of wisdom regarding microphones... Great tip.
Here in Ireland ham operator's are few and far between, (we've only in the region of 2,000 licensed operators in a population of approximately 4.5million) so licence free 446MHz channels and CB would be the first options.
Earth to Mikey! Earth to Mikey. I liked it a lot and your new "Warm and fuzzy" accessory, too. Over. Cheers, Mate.
Should do one about regular vehicle maintenance!
Great videos
Thanks for watching!
Great video Mike, thank for making that info clear and easily understandable.
I am starting to put together a 3 radio system to. Great video again. Thank u.
I have all 3 also love my Yeasu ftm 400
YO! I’m a new member thanks for the package! Still trying to navigate through the site!
Hey Mike, did you notice the Tribble on your shirt? Just saying! Great video btw
Excellent subject.
If I was to head out into the desert alone, is there a “go to” frequency I should tune in for my Icom ham radio.
I have cb, and I have a Baofeng cheapie ham radio to listen on the trail at least if the opportunity presents itself. I think I need to do a cram session to become official since my ham study app hasn't helped me much.
I used one of the free ham study apps and went through the test multiple times, ended up taking the test online for free and only missed 1 question, I’m far from being a genius, it’s very doable.
Will a technician license be enough for the ham radio and will the small handheld ham radios like Boefaing be enough radio ? Thank you for the video.
The smaller 5 watt will be better than CB, but I prefer 50Watt capability for range.
Leap years are the worst ones!
Do u guys in the US use UHF (477MHz) Radios at all? I gather when u refer to CB radio in the video that your referring to 27MHz CB Radios that can also have Single Side Band (SSB) abilites??
Our equivalent to that is GMRS... 462.55-462.7250 as 8 channels, 50W max. Other channels are under FRS/GMRS as lower power. There are also 8 repeater channels available. I'm assuming your in Australia..? Can you use repeaters with UHF..?
We do use UHF. There are HAM allocated frequencies you could use if you are licensed, and GMRS/FRS can be used on a limited based without a license assuming you stay under a certain wattage and have type approved gear, or you can get a GMRS license and use those frequencies at a higher output.
Andy Askew Yes we do have repeaters throughout Australia but they generally are privately funded though. It’s free to use the 80channels we have here in Australia with the repeaters are ch.1>8 and 31>38. Ch.40 is the Truckies channel that u listen to for general road conditions, etc. The other one we use in Australia is HF radio for long distance comms and u can connect to the landline phone network as well but everyone on that channel can hear the conversation
In this post you discuss both GMRS and CB options. I see you’ve got two ant on your front bumper. Is one of these for for ur GMRS? And if so, why did you put on front bumper? Does this placement help with GMRS in any way? Thanks
You see CB and Ham. The GMRS I have is quite small
Placement is just my preference.
Mole tape, my dude! Keeps the wind and clothing noise out while keeping the mic hidden.
How long is your CB antenna?
Trouble with Tribbles?
Mike, Are you able to access CB frequencies on a ham unit or do you need different (separate) hardware? Or do you need to have different antennas, radios ect?
CB radio is in the high frequency (HF) range 3Mhz to 30Mgz. The ham radio Mike is talking about is in the Very High Frequency (VHF) range 30Mgz to 300Mgz, and Ultra High Frequency (UHF) range. 300Mhz to 3Ghz. So you cannot access the CB channels with a VHF/UHF ham radio. I have both CB and ham radio in my rig. Works out great so far!
Mark Harro with the the radios we run in our vehicles for overlanding the answer is no. Most of us are running dual band 2m 440 unit, also known as uhf and vhf. You can tune a cb frequency from a HF ham radio between the 10m and 12m band (if you unlocked the radio to go outside of the ham bands)as long as you can tune your antenna to match the cb frequency.
Thanks for helping out guys!
There are HF/VHF/UHF all mode units like the Yaesu 857d that can be modified to use the CB channels. It isn’t technically legal to use on those channels though. I just run a separate CB radio but it does require its own antenna.
When the cell service is out and the ham radio repeaters don't work from the power grid being down. CB will still be there.
My understanding is that repeaters can operate on solar panels.
I hate to be the Karen in the comments. But my hard of hearing wife would love to follow along with your video. Can you please add subtitles to your videos please.
You can turn subtitles on for any CZcams video. Just tap on screen and you can find the setting to turn on subtitles.
It sort of matches your hair...
No hair here. I'm running a slick dome. Cheers!
Man that was hard to listen to 😆
radio operator myself Kc0QJS
Cheap option is get a handheld BaoFeng UV-82HP or F8HP and do a quick search on how to program it with chirp and have frs/grms plus the rest of the radio frequencies such as 146.460. Just remember to get an after market antenna from either ExpertPower or Nagoya and raise your middle finger to the law.
