Oft overlooked, but an important tool I always carry is a good piece of heavy waxed canvas tarp about 6' square. It is great for a number of other uses but it's most important function is put down under whatever it is you are working on. If you drop a socket, a bolt, washer, nut, etc., into the dust or, god forbid, sand, it is gone forever. Being heavy canvas (not that blue garbage!) it wont flap around. It's also good to lay on under the vehicle to keep you from getting completely dirty. I have a piece of canvas I've been carting around the world for decades. It probably saved my life in the Sahara when I dropped an irreplaceable throttle wire clip through the engine bay to the sand below. That would have been a long, long walk home :-0 Just my tuppence worth.
Totally loved the magical bag of holding reference... brings out the gamer geek in me. 👍
Nice! Add a telescoping magnet next to that telescoping mirror. Cheers from Denver Colorado!
I love watching none tool guys talk about tools.
Keep them coming. Really liking this series thanks.
Nice... Found tool rolls years ago in the military...."once you go to toll rolls you'll never go back" ...True !!!!!
Thanks for all your daily Video's Its getting me through these tough restriction fram a Member in Australia
Thanks Michael, we all need this right now, AND your and Carrie's vids are excellent. I'm setting up a tool kit now, so very timely. Thanks again!
Just watched your initial tool roll setup, so glad to see how it's evolved!
Haha - always learning!
Just picked up an ATC Toll Roll and I must say, WOW! The quality is superb and you gotta love that waxed canvas smell! Already set up my tools for my Jeep. Now I am saving up for the other two large bags illustrated in the video. Good stuff and all thanks to this vid! Thanks brotha! #
I would add quality tools. Nothing worse than a Knuckle Buster because of the wrench, ratchet and or socket slipped, broke or stripped the faster.
Im not saying you need to get tools off the tool trucks. But the $3.00 whatever will bite you.
I would also add a manual on how to fix ones vehicle. They can be had at any auto parts store.
Im the guy who brings everything.
Thank you for the daily vids. Your insight and experience help me to consider what I need for myself and to be helpful to my trail/adventure-mates. One thing I have considered with my build is not going too custom in case I need a part out in the middle of nowhere. Also, BOTTLE JACK! YES!!! :D
RIGHT?!
Great video, love your insight and reflection in your videos😉
I was getting worried, but then finally out came the JB weld. You may want to consider the large size tubes though. I have a BW1339 transfer case still in use with probably 2 pounds of JB weld on it. Was that way when I bought the vehicle 15 years ago!
With your electrical and fuses, consider extra relays as well. I just raid a like vehicle in the junkyard and pull one or two relays of each type.
Love the roll up thing.
I always keep that silicone sealant tape stuff in my “bag of holding.” That stuff saved my butt when I had a hole in a brake line on a 500 mile road trip once. I’ll never leave home without it!
My son’s car developed a leak in a 2.5 inch coolant hose. We wrapped it three times around with the extra wide Gorilla Tape, and it held for four months until he could replace it. He only replaced it because I kept bugging him about it u til he did.
Like that "flex seal"-type stuff?? Oh... Watched a little further and yep, flex tape.
Excellent video! That’s it...I’m ditching my toolbox for a tool roll!
Nice one great idea the tool roll 😎🇳🇿👍
Spare Fluids and spare parts would be another good topic to cover
Good kit! Would add a bit of race wire (thick and thin). If you can't fix it with duct tape, JB Weld, or race wire, it likely ain't broke. ;-)
100% agree tool roll is better than tool box.. for me it's the way you can squish it /them into an unused gap..
one thing, if your multimeter uses a square 9v battery keep a replacement .. AA or AAA batteries you can usually borrow from something else, but not much uses 9v
1more tip. Yes, you sometimes have to rig things up to get home. But when you make it home, fix it correctly. Don't just keep accumulating more and more temporary fixes.
I have to agree tool rool is the way to go. Not only for the display of tools but also the packablity. Quality toolset is good but doesn't have to be top of the line. I use mine when doing regular maintenance work to insure I have what is needed in my kit
Another great video Sir
Powerful D&D ref. Magical bag of holding.
Thank you Sir.
Bag of holding... I remember that stuff well.🤓
Don't if already mentioned, but I recently discovered the "lock n lube" fitting that goes on the grease gun. Operated with a thumb lever. Way better that a standard grease gun end.
Maybe this is a no brainier for folks here, but I added a breaker bar and 21mm 6 point socket for my lug nuts. I put on my spare once with the stock tire iron. That stubby little thing made it much harder than needed.
Former DM, loved BoH ref lol 🤓 but also great vid overall! Thx for sharing.
Hahaha!
I like those bags.. The only extras I really carry myself outside of what you have here are an impact and a torque wrench. I do lack the lubrication though - no pun intended. 👍
Very helpful
Nice roll.
Great video need to do this 👍👍
Just a comment. When looking at the side view camera you had the bag and then the items on the other side of the bag so it was blocking the view of the items. I agree with what your saying, you only need the tools and items to get you home then you can do the serious repairs at home or at a workshop. I'm looking at tool rolls now, seeing we can't do much here in Victoria Australia at present until they give us the go-ahead to get back out there.
OMG you made a D&D reference.
AND I understood it completely.
Hahaha
awesomeness all the way from great britain.
I need a setup like this. Seems like I bring the entire toolbox in my Toyota.
I too take my Toyota to go offroading with jeeps and need tools.
I think boxes have their place but tool rolls save on space and weight.
First thanks for making these videos. Lets face it TV sucks anymore so CZcamsrs like you are my entertainment. My go to tool I have been using for years is the Mini 1/4 inch ratchet with extension. You can apply a lot of torque more then a screw driver. it gets in places nothing else can. A magnet, great for holding nuts and bolts so they don't walk away. That large pocket on your tool roll would hold a nice ground tarp to keep things clean . And a 3 prong retrieval tool to get that #%^$ part that fell in to the Abyss of Doom. Great Job keep it up
Sweet!
🙋🏼
Thanks...cheers from Pasadena CA
I have a roll but need to cut junk out to cut weight.
Good video
Great video. Add a hub socket and brass punches.
I love the WD-40 in the convenient travel size......hehehehe
Look at Canadian Preppers tool roll, very interesting add on to your rig. I loved it and I’m usually a Pelican guy.
Awesome vid in one take!!! Made me flash back to my cross country motorcycle adventures with tool bag from hell. (Bring everything just in case syndrome) You mentioned list in PDF?
I just added!
Roll for initiative.
The tool roll is also quieter than a tool box! You forgot to mention that ATC is all made in Colorado.
Hey! What type of OBD reader do you have? Great videos, thanks for sharing!
I just picked a cheapy at Oriellys. $39
Awesome video!! I highly recommend adventure tool company, they create products to last a lifetime! They even sale a tool bag with dewalt tools.
What is the tool roll you use? I am looking for some good options! I have a hard plastic case that holds most of my tools but it is bulky and well I just don't like it!
This is Adventure Tool Company.
I wanna get into 4 wheeling, but I can't even afford the tools to go with it haha
Go to harbor freight man. Not the super quality but it will definitely work..
What is the name of the bag/case y'all keep your delorme (and similar) atlases in? I remember seeing it in a video years ago and can't remember the brand/model
Oh yeah...we actually use a soft travel garment bag that is the perfect size.
what would you stay are the top 5 things to bring on a short trail run?
Sockets, Wrenches, duct tape, bailing wire, high strength zip ties.
Good video. What tool wrap are you using? The ones on Amazon are too small (I have them). And if it's not available, what are the dimensions? Shouldn't be too difficult to make. (and not too difficult to figure out the dimensions... ) Tool wraps are a complete subject by itself. A good one: you roll it open under the vehicle and can easily grab what you need. Everything has a place. A bad one: it's black(you can't find anything in dim light), small, you unroll it and half the stuff falls out. Little bitty stuff like screwdriver tips are a perennial pain in the butt, especially now that there are about 15 different screw head types. I've yet to find any holder, case, etc that isn't a pain to insert and remove them, or is just a scramble. (I spent the first 20 years of my life: blade or phillips. Then I moved to Canada: Robertson - they were great. Now if I put some widget together with 3/4" 1.25", 2" screws they all have different heads. Allen wrenches could be as bad, but length makes them work.
Just pasted your photo into Illustrator. The main (upper in the photo) section is 42 x 14" and the bottom flap(?) is 27 x 16". Doing some Googling I found the Wolf Tooth components tool wrap that looks pretty good. I like that it uses clear vinyl for the small stuff pockets. Makes it easier to find the itty bitties. (In my tool belt pocket I use a neodymium magnet to hold all those annoying driver bits together. And because every stupid thing is black these days, I give the pockets of my black tool belt, and anything else like it a shot of white plastic spray paint. The paint soaks right in and it looks like you've accomplished nothing, but if you leave one pocket unpainted you'll quickly notice the difference.) Just cooped up at home thinking out loud....
Uuuum hey now...Land Rover rrc owner here..no extra wrenches needed. Said no land rover owner...Ever!. Good job Michael

Earth to Mikey! Earth to Mikey! I liked it, a lot Over!
Where does one find the PDF for the contents of your tool roll???
Or did I miss something??? Cheers, Mate.
Right! adding to description!

@@OverlandBound Thank you and cheers, mate!
Do you have a second set in a tool, box in your garage?
No actually, and sometimes that is a pain.
you should do another recovery video. thinking if you had chains for tires might not have slipped on ice going to moab last year. just a thought if you got some or considered it.
What happened to him?
You forgot the Leatherman😜🤪 never leave home without it...
Can not find that same tool roll out on their website. Help please. Am I missing something?
I'm wondering if it was custom.
@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 It is in the Adventure Tool Company’s site after all. I ended up getting one a few months back.
I used metal zip ties and duct tape on my buddies truck when he sheared the driveshaft in half. It got him home so it was a win lol it was super sketchy though lmfao
Seriously? That sounds like it defies physics.
@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 the driveshaft shearing in half? Or the way the truck was fixed to get him home
i would add some nitrile gloves to that big bag on the roll. but great setup.
Michael there is one thing that is needed with your tool set
Can you guess what that is lol il give you a little hint . What happens when you drop a nut or a bolt in a hard to reach spot
Ken, sounds like good advice, BUT if every bit of good advice is heeded, we'd need a trailer to carry all the gear. We gotta choose wisely and use our common sense. Good idea nonetheless, maybe :-)
@ Michael Overland Bound Have you ever thought of tinting your back windows on the rig for privacy, heat and aesthetics?
They are! Came from the factory like that.
@@OverlandBound Whaaaaaa? In the video, they look so light! HAHA. Maybe get them 5% errr something! Then you can hide your Bags of Holding easier!
@@Outdoor-4-Life I think it was direct sunlight in the background? Pretty bright - they are actually pretty dark.
@@OverlandBound I trust ya! Thanks for the videos and keeping me focused on something else besides my work and confinement each day! haha. Corrie and you are amazing! M
How much total weight are all of your tools?
If I had to guess, 50 lbs?
Throw in a Yoga Mat and your working in comfort. ;)
I had never thought of that! I've used moving boxes for decades. Now I'm gonna go get one of those. Thanks.
Belts and hoses??
Hey I love the content, a suggestion and I mean this only constructively, you might consider some more even lighting. The half lit face effect seems like something Hollywood would use for a villain. Good stuff from the content perspective especially!
Agreed! Next video will have improved lighting. We've added some gear to help.
extra relays are a necessity.
Yup! Have them, not in tool roll.
the grease gun will leak, I keep our mini grease gun mounted on the exterior of the trailer.
Bag of Holding? I wonder how many people actually know what that is. What about a Handy Haversack?
:D
“Metric or standard’? Is that not ‘imperial’ 😎
The Unscripted Nomad, Yup! Standard is Imperial, seems forgot where it came from, the British Empire, it’s still around in many places, but! What’s referred to to Standard or Imperial is inch” size across the hex, we could get into discussing BSW British Standard Whitworth or BSF, both refer to the bolt diameter not the hex size, wried... there’s BSP British Standard Pipe which is “ internal diameter still used wildly as steel water pipe.
yep D&D
"three extra wrenches for landrovers" .... uhm, my Defender is all metric?! :D
I doubt he's wheeled with many Series Landies but some of them have some British Standard "Whitworth" nuts and bolts. Of course if you have metric and SAE you will be able to get close enough with a combination of both but ehh.
but wait standard is metric :)
I think tools are only as good as the vehicle itself and the servicing and spare parts you bring
Vehicle - My first 4x4 was a 4.5 auto 80 series and I lost the auto box in Wales miles from anywhere.
That was a full service history 120k mile vehicle, my point if the vehicle has a complicated part, that will go wrong
Maintenance - service every few thousand miles and before any major trip
Spare parts - bring all filters seals, bearings a cv shaft, wheel studs, wheel nuts spare light bulbs, fuses etc
I go by the theory that if a part can go wrong it will go wrong, if you can’t fix it on the road your buggered
It’s no way to know the tools unless you know your rig if you do a meticulous maintenance the less tool you will need and of course less breaking down on the trail.
STANDARD?! Oh wow.... Is not metric the world standard .... 😇🤓
