Put away your Sunday scaries, it's time for Teachers Off Duty!! Join our hosts, KC Mack, The Angry Gym Teacher: Tom Filline, and HonestTeacherVibes herself: Bri Richardson. (Crowd goes wild!!)
Teaching can be loud and chaotic, just the volume in the hallway is enough to make any teacher want to scream. But the louder the teachers scream, the louder the kids will be. It's a never-ending cycle of noise.
    🍎 Featured Stories:
Ring, Alexa, and a Rolex? Imagine teaching a reading group when the classroom phone rings, Alexa mistakenly orders a luxury watch…. "Thank goodness for cancellations! Teacher salaries don’t allow for this!"
Tornado Terrors: Picture this-100 kids and 5 teachers squeezed into a bathroom during a real tornado warning. "Hot, sweaty, chaotic, loud, panic inducing, awful!" Nothing could prepare a teacher for this.
Lizard Chase Mayhem: Half the class thrilled, half terrified, and a tail left wiggling on the floor. "We accidentally chopped off part of its tail and it was wiggling, which caused more chaos!" Say what!?
Milk Shootout: The day two boys discovered they could shoot milk out of their noses. Note it for the record, my guy.
Daily Overload: "I am trying to deliver a lesson, answer the phone, write a bathroom pass, get someone a pencil, check email, answer a question, solve a technology problem and hear an announcement at the SAME TIME all day every day...I am TIRED" We feel you bestie…

THE. WATER. BOTTLES!!!!!!!!! Hitting the floor! OMG. Metal on concrete. I can't. And I need to thank you all.... For MONTHS now, my Loops have been in another purse. I keep forgetting to find them and put them in my current purse. And everytime I need them, I remember where they are. DAMMIT! But you talking about the Loops made me get up, find the Loops, and put them in my current purse. THANK YOU!!! As I get older (I'm 54 now), I become less and less able to handle the overstimulation. And I SWEAR the overstimulation is getting more and more insane with each year. Somehow, we are expected to teach, grade, enter grades, answer questions, redirect misbehavior, answer emails, hold your bladder/bowels, fill out questionnaires, NOT be on our phones, but answer texts from admin, write passes to the nurse, put your objective on the board, be prepared for an impromptu observation, fill out PLAAFs, get attendance done, and be entertaining ALL AT THE SAME TIME. And why must they yell when they are talking to each other? You are RIGHT NEXT to each other! There is no need to yell! I suffer from migraines. I get them on the regular and I have to push through them. And even though I never thought of myself as having ADHD, I'm pretty sure I do. The background noises completely derail me. And my BF doesn't get it. He doesn't understand how a NON-MORNING PERSON with migraines comes home from work and passes out for four hours almost every day. In fact, most people don't understand. I'm just holding my breath until retirement. And whatever I do after that is going to be silent. With no people. Question: How are you teaching and going on tour?? Is that only during the summer? Are you on sabbatical?

This episode is spot on this week. #1 I was diagnosed with moderate to severe hearing loss due to the loudness in the auditorium and events in the gym over my 32 year career.
#2 I received a nasty email from a parent complaining that something happened in the PE class. The kid told the parent that the PE teacher said to tell the homeroom teacher, me. And that I did not take care of it to his satisfaction. Meanwhile, the kid never said one thing to the PE teacher. 😒

I am going to be completely honest with you, I have been teaching for so many years and I always wondered why I was so tiered when I got home, never did I think it was because I was overstimulated. I always though that it had to do with me getting through all of my lesson plans, as well as the fact that I try to keep my class clean at all times. Now it all makes sense, over stimulation is real, I can now explain why I want to be alone after school or why I do not want to talk to anyone. 🧠🧠🤯

KC I actually interviewed a teacher new to my district and asked them what made them want to make the switch. Apparently their pervious school was a 45 minute drive away, after school they would get stuck in rush hour traffic and as you can expect, that's kind of miserable to go through all week. So when they saw an opening at my school they took it because they only live 5 minutes away. I can't even imagine over an hour a day of just driving to and from work.

Bri, I had to google where you went to college when you mentioned the tornado tearing up your school in 2008 because it sounded familiar.... I was at Freed-Hardeman at the time and I was thinking "I bet she went to Union!" I will never forget when some of the students from Union came to speak to us at Freed about the experience and how the walls were blown off the dorm buildings but there were pictures and paper push pinned to the bulletin boards in the now exposed rooms that were still there like nothing had happened.
I was a Connecticut girl who was in my freshman year of college at Freed and I had never been that close to a tornado before and I spent that whole night terrified because it was one warning after another after another.
I am so glad you made it out of that ok, so sorry to hear about the students who have lasting physical damage from that night.

I worked at a daycare at a church and it was preK through 5th grade and it was pure chaos we were not allowed to show them movies, there were Bairly any toys. Little kids getting run over by the big kids everyone screaming. And the worst part was we were not allowed to put them in time out or anything. We had to sit there and let them do whatever they wanted. The overstimulation was crazy

I’ve never been so disappointed in my Bored Teacher Peeps! A Recorder is a completely different instrument from a flute!! A recorder is plastic or wood, the mouthpiece goes in your mouth, and it’s held vertically. A flute is metal, held horizontally, and you blow across the mouthpiece to get a sound!
There is an instrument similar to the recorder called a fluteophone, but it’s still more like a recorder than a flute! 49:05

In Sikeston Missouri there is a restaurant whose slogan was (or is) “ home of the throwed rolls”. We went there a few times in the 1980’s when we would visit my friend’s mother in Carbondale, Illinois . The rolls were piping hot and delicious and we had to catch them. SUCH FUN 👏🏾👏🏾!!!

I always think about how early school starts in the US. In the UK most schools start as early as 8:30am and genarally finsh by 3:30pm. And that's elementary through high school. Science suggests growing bodies and brains need an adequte amount of sleep and starting school later in the day is betther for children.

Systems like this actually exist in some European countries. Germany for example has something that's called a "Whole Day School" in German it's Ganztagsschule, which basically means that the students stay there until 4 pm. In Austria, we have a few of them as well, and from the Google reviews I can tell that the reputation is not really good 😅 I remember when I was in Middle School (over 15 years ago XD), the government wanted to make this as a permanent thing in every school. Well, that was the first time where we as students went on the streets to protest and our school let us do that without repercussions. I guess, most of the teachers didn't want that either. 🤣

    • @kathyotoole4608
      @kathyotoole4608 Před měsícem +1

@@MrsDaedalus_ But did the children go to school at 4:00 a.m? We have an after school program that runs until 6 pm but it is not run by the teachers. A different company is in charge of the after school program and it is voluntary. Parents pay for it like daycare.
