Welcome back to another episode of Teachers Off Duty, we’re joined by the funny KC Mack, the always entertaining Bri Richardson and Mike Rivera. I hope you’re ready because today we're diving into the hilarious, and sometimes bizarre world of lesson plans gone wrong.
Bri kicks things off with a tale of football athletes fighting right in the middle of a school assembly! We dive into the chaos of breaking up a brawl and the unexpected roles we find ourselves in as educators. Mike takes us down memory lane with a throwback to when archery was part of the curriculum. We debate the pros and cons of such unconventional school activities, sharing our own wild experiences.
Mike's got a story about a teacher who had an embarrassing experience searching up kittens falling from the ceiling mid-lesson. We talk about the wild unpredictability of teaching and how to navigate these unexpected classroom intrusions. And then there's the time a student decided to taste his shoe... Yes, it's as strange as it sounds. We share our own tales of student antics that left us scratching our heads.
Mike hits us with another story about a police dog's surprise visit to his classroom, sniffing for drugs. Picture the scene: confused students, a bewildered teacher, and a dog on a mission.
So, join us on Teachers Off Duty for an episode filled with surprises in the unpredictable world of teaching.

I love Mr. Rivera. He’s a true teacher! Bri and KC have been taking over the conversations recently and leaving the poor third teacher on the side lines but Mr. Rivera has been holding his own and not letting them drown him out. Feels like a teacher at work fighting to continue the lesson with 30 kids jumping off the walls lol love him!

As a substitute I had a student tie his shoe laces around the leg of his chair and couldn't get it untied. He was dragging the chair around the classroom complaining he was stuck, until I told him to go to the principal for help. Miraculously, he was freed from the chair!!!

We always had the dogs come once a year in high school. They didn’t bring them into classrooms, but took them through the halls, to all the lockers, and around all the cars in the parking lot. One year, the dog alerted to the valedictorian’s car, who’s boyfriend had left his stash in her car that morning. Her mom was a teacher at my school too😳

I'm in IT at a school district. Elmo is a brand that made document cameras. Our teachers have Hovercams now. Also yes, I think the teacher in the story was referring to an old overhead projector. The newer ones on the ceiling don't get as hot on the outside plus I don't think you could throw a jacket over it unless the projector was sitting on a table or something.

The AP and the police officer, along with the dog handler, come to the room and have all of yhe students go in the hall while the dog goes through the room. They used to have us put our bags in the hallways and the dogs would walk through the hallways. They did this in high school and middle school. The dogs would start barking in the hallway. But the only times I ever saw something go down was when these two kids were sitting in each other's lap and sharing a thc vape and edibles in our spanish class.
But we heard about an elementary school kid who brought vodka to school in a water bottle, and these 3rd or 4th graders were sharing it around.

Cellphones cause so many problems in school and have a negative impact on the school community because of how most kids use their phones. At my last job kids were starting fights and filming them with their phones constantly! Parents really need to step up in this area and take more responsibility. NO your child doesn’t need a cellphone. You can get a smartwatch for them that tracks them and enables parents to text and call. The excuse of parents needing to be in constant contact with their kids 24/7 via cellphone only doesn’t hold up. I work at a school where a lot of kids parents have figured this out and they have smart watches. There are affordable ones out there and in fact they are cheaper than cellphones. So that whole safety argument needs to be put to sleep. I’m finally at a school that supports teachers in this and acknowledges how distracting the phones are and doesn’t allow them in class. Teaching is so much better now. More schools need to take a stand on this.

Announcements are the worst. At the beginning of the day we have scheduled announcements and those are not bad. The schedule was created to have two minutes of announcements but when class is interrupted by an administrator to have additional announcements, that should not be allowed. I will give you an example; we are warned when we will have practice earthquake drill, evacuation drills or fire drills and we as teachers are to teach the students what to do. Then right before an evacuation drill, an administrator goes over what we the teachers explained. Why? Tell me Why? If you are going to do that, then you teach the students what to do. Administrators, if you like talking, just to hear your voice, then do not tell us to teach the students what to do. You do it. 🤐
