  • Sandra Laing: A Spiritual Journey (2000): Sandra Laing was born to white parents in South Africa, but because of her appearance she was identified as black and expelled from school. What followed was a heartbreaking story of a family ripped apart during Apartheid-era South Africa.

Sandra Laing was born in 1955 to two white Afrikaners. She had a happy early childhood, unaware of her difference. However once she started school, it became obvious that Sandra was no normal child; due to her dark skin, Sandra was believed to be black. At 10 years old, parents at her primary school petitioned for her expulsion, deeming it unacceptable for a young 'black' girl to be educated in a white school. Her case was referred to the Department of Home Affairs, and Sandra was officially identified as black, and expelled. After a 2-year-long petition process, Sandra was re-identified as white after a blood test proved she was her parents' child. It was too late however; her absence at school had caused her to fall behind, and her English to suffer. Unable to fit into a divided society, Sandra, aged just 15, ran away with a black man and started a family. She was jailed for two months for being in a mix-raced couple, during which her family refused to visit. Even once released, her father refused to speak to her and cut contact, with her mother eventually following suit. The years to follow would prove to be tough, her identity constantly questioned and her life ending up in pieces. 30 years later, now happy with a
new husband, Sandra has difficulty coming to terms with the past, feeling guilt and regret for her actions, and while she longs to visit her now dying mother, her white family still wants nothing to do with her. A heartbreaking and extraordinary story set in Apartheid South Africa, which was eventually turned into a film, Skin (2008), starring Sophie Okonedo.

If you look back at the history of South Africa, the Europeans mixed with the Koi koi and Koi san, which is what she and her siblings looks like. History shows that over generations a black couple (due to their ancestors interracial marriages) can have a light skinned child, as well a white couple can have a darker skinned child. I remember years ago on a talk show in the States, a black couple had a very fair skinned child with blond hair, the husband swore that his wife fooled around on him. After DNA tests and the husbands ancestry they found that the child was his as he had German ancestors. So, before you pass nasty judgement on this sad yet beautiful story, think about your ancestry. Life is too short for us to be judgmental and nasty.

And don't even put it on her being with some man... he was old af talking to her and she did what any other teen was doing... being naive. And all her father saw was skin color. Forgetting what color his beautiful baby was and putting aside that some grown man was preying on his little girl. This whole thing... she didn't ask to be mistreated, shunned by near everyone but people who looked like her, etc. The brothers are by far... get it together. The mother is even more shocking to me... and still while going through all that Ms. Sandra still came out to be one of the greatest mothers despite of what she lacked. It's possible for her to be born apparently black even though she is born of apparently white people. You might actually find that both her parents have black genes in their family in that they each have an ancestral black person from whom they received the "black" gene. This gene might have been recessive meaning that it didn't show in the parents, however, because they are both carriers, their mating resulting in them having a black child. At least understand the basics of genetics before you can invalidate this woman's story. While there are stories of cheating parents resulting in the birth of a child of a different race, her story is not a lie... she is a white woman who has black features and is born of white parents. Her case is not absolutely impossible, but very rare... she is that 1 in so many people.

Yes, we know the story of Sandra well in SA🇿🇦. She's one of many and different circumstances and lives shattered. It just illustrates the absurdity of Apartheid which many family still suffer the repercussions of today. Black families split when their fairer, lighter skinned family members classified "coloured" and moved to mixed race locations, other black families split by tribal groups, people in mixed marriages jailed, some white sympathizers of anti-racism disowned by their families and jailed. Broken family ties with many still confused about their identity still and messed up. 🇿🇦

In the old footage of the parents in the shop, the mothers face was so distorted that there was some pain going on for a minute. Now the pain of the daughter is carried on. There is more to this story than what is being told in 25 minutes. There could be more of what actually took place in the home for this girl to run away from home at a VERY young age. So, she was not accepted in school yet ran away from family that loved her? Home with family that loves you is where you find solitude. This was such a happy home, but the mother is AFRAID of the father. There is something to this story. A grown woman shy to this day, and yet she married twice, starting at what age? Agreed, and for people to continuously try to say that her parents were passing for white is ludicrous. It's possible that maybe one of them were passing but I'm 100% sure they both were not. Even still...there is no way that ALL of their children would have come out looking biracial. Hell, I'm only 7% white (according to my genetic testing) and this woman looks just as black, if not more, black than I do. I honestly believe that her mother had an ongoing affair with a black man and her parents were too ashamed to own up to it...they thought the kids would/could pass as long as they doubled down on both being the biological parents. People keep bringing up the "blood test" but it was just that, a BLOOD TEST, which proves absolutely nothing. DNA testing wasn't even available until the mid-late 80's...
If that man were simply "passing" for white, he wouldn't have treated his daughter with such disregard. The son's were lighter and more than likely fell in line with pursuing/marrying white women, especially seeing how their sister was treated after falling in love with a black person. We are all mixed up and genetics show up in weird ways, but I'm sorry...I do not believe that these parents were simply passable for white and ALL of their children came out clearly as descendents of African people.

I had a friend that said her husband’s grandmother said there was black in the family. All of her kids were born with curly hair. Her daughter had a kinky patch in the center of her head. But none of them had dark skin. It’s truly hard to believe that she was born not only w/ darker skin, but also with the kinky hair. Speaking from the African-American side, we have all colors in our family. There are a lot of very light-skinned ppl in my family. It’s all genetics, someone in her family was black or biracial & passed for white. It happened all the time. I wish that ppl would be honest with their family. I’m so glad that she was welcomed in the black community & loved. ❤

NotJo my dad (who is African American) is 51 and I could count the number of grey hairs on his head and beard when he was 49. He only really started growing grey hair due to stress put on his body after complications from a heart condition he was born with that he was hospitalized for at 50. All my white friends dads around my fathers age were greying and even balding already.

They were all white. Go and watch Skin on Amazon and Netflix for the real story. It's called atavism or ancient gene.

@Daughter of Enoch She looks just like them. People don't want to see it.😌

Daughter of Enoch it’s called being ignorant. You clearly do not know the complexity of genetics. A white blonde couple had twins, one a ginger and one black. Did the mother cheat with two races?
