Welcome back to Teachers Off Duty with our hosts KC Mack, HonestTeacherVibes: Bri Richardson, and the Angry Gym Teacher, Tom Filline!
Let’s have a real talk about Gen Z. They’re just built different. What is up with these snack smugglers and TikTok pre-stars?
Maybe we shouldn’t cry or laugh at the hilarious yet frustrating reality of teaching Gen Z students who don't know how to do a simple signature. It's a skill we often take for granted, but for this new generation, it's a foreign concept. Maybe they figured out a better way?
Signatures stump them but we’re the ones lost at their new language that we can barely keep up with. And it's not just in the hallways, it's in the classroom too. From slang to memes, it's like a whole new language that we have to learn.
And speaking of not keeping up with, we argue with KC about the infamous "shoe crease" dilemma. These kids refuse to change into their PE shoes because they don't want to crease them. He says he gets the issue, us not so much…..
Drink some hot tea to prepare to yell “WORLDSTAR!” at the next teacher debate because it might just hit the internet. Who knew there was a whole wave of Gen Z students starting "fight pages" on social media. It's a disturbing trend that’s taking off - one page even got a brand deal….
But it's not just the students who can be a handful. There was a teacher trying to bully a student who was bullying others. She thought it would hold up a mirror to their actions but that’s just not the route to take bestie.
It’s not always crazy, sometimes its outright HILARIOUS. From "Mrs. Funny Face" to "Mr. Cool" to “[REDACTED]”, these nicknames humble us real quick.

Teachers Off Duty Podcast by Bored Teachers - Komedie
😭 y'all. i am gen z and a TEACHER. these kids that y'all are talking about are gen alpha.
Fr we outta college already
Actually, the end of Z is in middle school still (11-12 year olds are Z).
The oldest Alphas are 10 (2014 is Alpha start point).
@@gilliantohver3225 so, yes and no. the years included in a generation depends on the study you look at. the generational splits are created using cultural, technological, and social shifts (and more) and sometimes the years aren't set in stone until much later because it is harder to see these things in the moment. there are also blends in who relates to what. those born in the years closest to the generation change often socially straddle them and can relate to both.
@@gilliantohver3225 but also, regardless of this, with the ages they teach and the slang they are referring to, they are talking about gen alpha. this is why KC keeps using "out of date" slang that would be more accurate for gen z, i believe he taught an older grade and has been out of the classroom this year.
Yeah this is Gen alpha, not Gen z
As a 2nd grade teacher, learning to tell time on an analog clock is one of our state math standards. I use the big yellow Judy Clock to teach them just like I learned it back in the 90s lol.
My second grader has to pause a sec to compute time on an analogue clock, but he can still do it. It's just a new skill that doesn't come automatically yet. I do, however, know adults in their twenties/thirties who cannot read an analogue clock.
As someone who was born in 1997 I feel like we should be in the millennial category. I can read an analog clock, write/read cursive, and don’t speak in this new language. 😂
Same dude
there are all forms of gen z we can blend with either generation honestly. like i think gyat is hilarious but some other gen z might think that kinda thing is silly. elder gen z are just built different.
My sister who teaches second grade told me that "gyat" means "girl your a$$ thick" and that mewing is a facial expression equivalent to Blue Steel in Zoolander. 🤷🏻♀
Gen Z = "born between 1997 and 2010" Gen Alpha = "born between 2011 and 2024". There are diff theories abt when each gen starts/stops, but those definitions are the most widely accepted.
I'm gen z and going into highschool after summer break, I FEEL SRRY FOR YA'LL. My classmates may be somewhat well-behaved, but the amount of times i've had to hear tiktok terminology is INSANE.
My students just started saying "Get up" in a high pitched voice as they motion with their hands. No idea where it came from. I asked. They said that they just made it up. They were basically begging me to do it the other day and I stood firm in my "no" lol
I teach 8th graders. It's rough
Im pretty sure they got that from a rapper, Meek Mill he said get up in a video in a goofy way and went viral
I have a colleague who got his room broken into over the weekend and those kids trashed his room, tore up all his posters, poured Gatorade over everything, and pissed in his mug. Shit like that never happened when I was a kid
Let me help clarify some slang terms for you. "Gyat" means "butt." "Mewing" is a chin exercise. "Rizz" means "you got game."
Yes
I'm a sped teacher, there is training we do that is 75% prevention and the last level is physical restraint. I would love to have the whole staff trained, to at least be aware of the correct options even if they are not comfortable intervening individually. Hands on is only used for the physical safety of people.
I asked my admin for this training. Their response was "what would you need that for?" I wish more admins were as dedicated to it.
Try teaching the college students after covid. My students don't know how to take notes, yall!
Brees laugh is contagious!!!!!
And you wonder why more teachers are quitting....
You can't touch , protect yourself from the child, there's nothing for teachers and everything for the children who should be punished.
Gen Z is generally born 1995-2010, so they're between 10-25 years old. Some of these might be Gen Z, but most are Gen Alpha. Come on Millennials, everyone still thinks we're barely 20, how are ya'll doing the same thing to them??
I definitely had kids snort smarts in middle school 😂 I graduated highschool in 2015 for reference
I can't wait to go see you guys this weekend in Charlotte NC!! I am a future teacher and my sister has taught 7th grade math for 5 years. Im glad I convinced my sister to come with me to the bored teacher comedy tour. We are going to be laughing so hard 🤣🤣🤣
As a Gen Z and educator, I can confirm Skibidi Toliet is all my first graders talk about! That’s a gen alpha thing
These people don’t know what their talking about. Most Gen z are in high school, and the skibidy toilet thing is from gen alpha
Into the 36 minutes of this. Their describing my preschool. We have soo many kids with behavioral issues. Hitting teachers and other children... and we cant do nothing about it. We have truma in other kids and teachers 😢 I'll see you on Sunday to have good laughs
Insightful and fun thoughts for this one that's a nice mix of honesty and heart!
Merch is strictly in Chicago.
I ask that all the time bri be careful why "why" 😂😂😂😂
We didn’t snort smarties but we “smoked” them lol (circa 2011/2012)… we’d bang em on the table while still in the wrapper; it would turn into powder, then we’d pretend “smoke” them and blow the “smoke” out our mouths lol
Yes room is cleared when big behaviors are happening and a student is being unsafe/sib/prop dest. etc. but it means staff will be confronting those potentially unsafe behaviors
I was born in 97 and refused to be apart a gen z because I have no idea what these kids be talking about 😂
Bro fr
I’ve taught in multiple states and districts. Students across them all have behavioral challenges, at every grade level. Every crisis response training that I’ve been trained in, only those trained in restraints can use a restraint.
While difficult to watch and have to clean up the only thing that can be done is to call for support and let the child that is escalated to continue and keep everyone else safe, do what you can to remove items that could become dangerous, and intervene to block things that could be thrown. Legally, even teachers are protected by laws pertaining to keeping others safe and most districts and states will allow non restraint trained teachers to use a bear hug from behind to support a child in being safe while waiting for support.
The opposing team legit barked at my players ⚽️ when we were about to score. That was the first time I learned about this. I was like wt….. ???
KC there is no S sound at the end of Illinois it's silent 😂😂😂😂😂
We have restraint training but we arent allowed to use it, you have to call for crisis
34:50 I am a preschool teacher and I have to clear our room multiple times throughout the day. We have kids throwing tables, chairs, toys, etc. at staff and other kids. It has gotten to the point where I had to call a parent and tell them that their child got hit by a chair and ended up with a concussion. I also can’t describe how many bruises I leave with each day. Luckily we are allowed to restrain them because we have been trained for that!!
the fact that it has to come to that is devastating. my cousin in elementary education deals with the same shit and it makes me so sad to see because of just how passionate she and so many other teachers are about education and these kids and the kids are just out of control. im so sorry you are getting that kind of abuse from actual babies.
Please come to Florida!!!
Lol I have adhd and I actually have a podcast on it authentically ADHD, but yalls references were funny af
Unfortunately, we are not allowed to give details of room clearing incidents...but they happen often in elementary. 😢 And, I teach in Oklahoma too...I can totally see my district tell me to teach even if no one shows up...🤦♀🤷♀
9:33 my dad has everything in military time because he was a medical worker. Im now married to a man in the air force, so i can read all the clocks lol
I'm a 2nd grade TA and I made the mistake of using a Gen Alpha colloquialism once and ever since, they talk to me greasy and I have to respond the same way. No cap😂😂
My son is 14 and he’s not allowed any kind of social media. It’s too much for brains that aren’t developed. If a kid is freaking out like that in Michigan we have CPI training we can restrain a student if they are going to hurt themselves others or destroying things. Everyone in my school is CPI trained.
As a gen Z student speaking, I can read analog and prefer analog clocks, and I can write in cursive as well as my signature.
34:24 In my school district they provide “Handle with Care” training to all Sped teachers
yall talking about gen alpha lmao im gen z and got taught cursive in 2nd grade also taught how to read an analog in like kindergarten first grade and gyatt is not trying to say gd😭
Any plans to come to London, UK?
They may not know their social security number, but they do know their alpha code.
I'm gen z, and gyatt means God or @$$, Skibidi means evil
34:23 @honestteachervibes That’s basically the program my husband and I work in (we’re an Intermediate Unit/center-based program). Permanent staff are Safe Crisis Management trained and we have rooms (we call them reflection rooms) with mats for more extreme behavioral issues. We also have designated behavior support staff. Sometimes, though, we have no choice but to clear the room because the student refuses to leave the room. The rest of the class complains and throws fits because they have to move and the student usually ends up destroying the classroom to some degree. And on top of it, we don’t always have the staff to deal with all the issues.
One of the things that gets me, though, is that the behaviors seem to start over the smallest things! It’s mind-blowing! I feel like I’m seeing more and more that issues arise because a student isn’t getting what they want or they don’t want to do something because there’s nothing in it for them or something like that.
At least the back half of this episode, I feel so seen!
When I hear that a parent has told the teacher they don’t do certain behaviors at home, I want to point out that so many times, the behaviors are over work refusals! So either the parents have better luck getting their kids to do what their asked and the kids have absolutely no respect for teachers or there are few to no demands/expectations at home and/or there are no consequences for refusals at home.
Gyat is butt 😂😂😂
They had it mostly right, it is short for “god dam” but the way we use it is to describe somebody’s butt. It really could be used for anything😂
@@bigmacmacy2525 So true
😂okay I thought I was lost on my gen X lingo, i had it down as 'girl yo ass thick'
Room clears happen all the time in elementary nowadays. I hate it. No child should be allowed to destroy property; it starts a really bad precedent for future behaviors and expectations.
Teachers and police/fire have been shown to have the highest concentration of ADHD. The constant change in teaching fits perfectly with ADHD.
So at my school we get certified and trained in de-escelation, restraints, holds and releases. If its not a board certified behavioral analyst or registered behavior tech in the situation, if it gets to that point where it is unsafe and past the point of de-escelation, we call for a response team (RBT's and BCBA's).. if possible we are supposed to wait until one of them and a nurse is present to go into a hold. But of that is the only way in a damgerous situation we jump into action and behavior team takes over when they get there. But normally they are already present. Normally these kids already have a plan in place but that could always change. Its all based on the kiddo
We do do a lot of Shelter in Place calls though if we can get the student into the hallway and redirect to a de-escelation space
As a gen z teacher, my signature is basically how I’d right it usually, not necessarily cursive but the letters have a little curl, a lil personality. Print is when I am trying to write it in my most generic and clean letters, cosplaying like I’m a keyboard or something 😂 they really don’t look all that different though
Genz teacher I can in fact read an analog clock and sign my name
For the love of God the Skibidi toilet Ohio gyat thing is GEN ALPHA, NOT Z
No. Mewing has to do with improving the muscles in your jawline. And that’s why they “can’t talk” because they’re mewing. That thing with their thumb across their jaw.
Just thought to help.... I use bing ai instead of Google now ... I love it.... Straight forward answer with links. Millennial here 😅
If you guys ever want to talk with special needs school paras, TAs or teachers, I've got you. Literally so many stories you guys tell and topics you cover we could bounce conversation over. 😊
One of my parents has collection of crocs to her dresses, one of the crocs has crocs charms with chars on charms 🙄
So a teacher had no classroom and just a cart...a homeless teacher? Lol😅
Smarties is old my coworker in their 50's had a son in kindergarten when their teacher taught the son how to do it. I think they still don't understand how to be around each other, more so when they physically or mentally hurt each other.
That happened in my high school almost every day. It his boy would act out from r months.
I’m a 32 year old teacher and I have never been able to use an analog clock never been able to learn how to tell the time with an analog clock.
Can students come to the comedy tour ? Or is it only for teachers ? Lmaooo, im a sub does that count?!
Rizz is short for charisma. You're welcome. Yes, like you can't get a romantic interest. Love this gen.
Rizzo is a pink lady from Grease. 😂 She has the charisma.
Yall have had too much caffeine
How do you rate his transitions bri because I always agree good vs bad lol
I think just lumping all gen z together is kind of offesive. Like you all aknowledge there are plenty of gen z teachers. I think it should be genz/gen alpha not just gen z. I only say that because being a teacher there are a lot of assumptions being made about me just because I am gen z and it can lead to a feeling of exclusion. So i wish people wouldnt just lump all gen z together when half are full adults and half are still like 11 years old.
Mewing is actually about building a strong jawline, started by the looksmaxing community to look better. It's a wild rabbit hole to go down
Rizz is charisma
yall im gen z technically (1999, im 24) and i was taught cursive, i do know how to sign my name as well as how to properly write in cursive, and i also know how to read an analog clock because we also were taught using the big yellow clock. you guys might actually be talking about gen alpha🥴
I'm gen alpha,(7th grade)my brain is rotting from all the cringe stuff my class mates say/do but i know how to read a clock (not digital) and i can write/read cursive.....
I DON'T BELONG IN THIS GENERATION 😂😂😂😂
Man I don't know what state yall teach at but in Las Vegas it's kinda free reign in the form of protecting yourself and breaking up fights. Mostly cause of how often it just happens here. Only thing to be reprimanded about is an "excess of force" in a sense.
Yeah Gen Z is grown this is Gen Alpha that yall are talking about. They are expected to be our biggest generation we've ever had within the next few years, stats say they will be counted at 2 billion people 🤷🏽♀️
Maybe it's just the age breakdown but gen z is all about attitudes and gen alpha is freakin feral.
Rizz is short for Charisma 😅 some of these boys calling them selves "the Rizzler" I laughed so hard at that
Introduce them to the Onceler and they might stop 😅
@@arrowbliss2515it’s a play on words with Onceler and Riddler because those characters are known to have female fanbases lmao, they know.
Just so you know… 10:23 the GYATT in KY refers to a large bottom… like ‘GYATT dang! Her butt is big!’
Merch is on god
A gyatt also means a person with a large behind lol
Gyatt is booty y'all 😆
Demerits were the best thing put into our school for warnings depending on the teacher they would get chances till they got a demerit whether that was one and done or three or four cause that would be last resort most of the time which was great because all teachers had to give a warning to the student specifically or to the whole class if you go two that is a detention... for our school since it was a Christian School we wrote Bible verses which was great
I’m 12 and I have no idea what the slang means
I think Skibidi toilet guy is a gen alpha meme. I'm not sure if younger gen z's are using that meme. I heard gen alpha and younger gen z's using the slang word Gyatt.
Gen z here: I know how to read and write cursive, and I can read an analog clock. I learned that in 3rd grade.
My daughter who is in 6th grade tells me that the boys moan during class. Not sure what that is about.
Riss short for charisma
Sus and yeet are out
Riz is short for Charisma
y’all only have about 4 years of gen z that are still in school…. yall must be talking about gen alpha
I’m 21 year old apart of gen z and wtf is skidi toilet
I teach students with severe disabilities, at least they have a reason for their behaviors!
I'm a millennial lmao this is gona be funny
I can just hear all of them rolling their eyes at all the millennial humor 😂😂😂😂😂 but seriously though, I'm getting afraid...it sounds like we're going to have a society filled with violence in ten years.
You guys are mixing up the chat talking about 12 year olds and gen Z the 12 year olds are gen Alpha
Not a teacher thinking someone born in 97 is 11 years old in the year 2024 😭
I Am A 24 Year Old Girl, I Know How To Write My Name In Cursive, My Final Algebra Test Score Was 82% or B-…
Sorry to break it to you guys, but everyone from generation Z has already graduated from high school
that's what i was thinking 💀
I’m Gen Z and won’t graduate until 2025. The youngest Gen Z kids are still in 7th grade.
Stories can't be older?
@@doodlebug5486 that’s not true generation Z ends in 2005. You are not a part of generation Z. You are generation alpha.
@@wildbeautyunderneath4735 i've not ever heard someone from gen z use this specific slang. it is primarily been 7th grade and below.
FIRST COMMENT YES
This is literally all Gen Alpha; as a gen z teacher it scares me to think there’s an overlap between the two 🥲
These boomers don’t know anything about gen-Z 😂😂🤣🥲
