Welcome back to Teachers Off Duty! This week our hosts Bri Richardson, Devin Siebold, and James Yon unpack the weirdest teachers of the news, that you have to see to believe.
Sick days are hard to come by, but luckily for this teacher, while battling cancer, his fellow teachers came to his rescue. Although it's a heartwarming story of comradery between peers, should he have to take his friends sick days?
While most teachers seem to have bad luck, a small group of teachers in Kentucky managed to win the lottery! To make it even better they had plans to use some of that money on their students, but we can't help but wonder if we would have been so generous.
In a turn of events we found a teacher in the news that was forced to resign after her ex-boyfriend maliciously sent some things to her school officials! Is it fair for this teacher to lose her job due to someone else's actions?
Speaking of stressful situations, we found a story about a bat on the playground, but not the sports kind, the animal kind. This flying rodent created a massive commotion, causing far more chaos than we ever imagined possible.

I work at a small preschool in NJ. We had one of our ‘veteran teacher’s spouse pass from cancer this year-within 4 months of diagnosis. Our entire 23 staff members including admin all donated sick/pto days (as well as so much more) so that she could be with her family and fly him home to be buried. Things like this are what make me love my school.

Dang y’all aren’t even that bad compared to my schools. One was inappropriate touching from a teacher to a student, fired for that, the campus police found a weapon in a car, and to top that off at my middle school, it was a girls birthday and she brought cupcakes and everyone who ate it got drugged.

    Hello,
I taught my last 5 years at a school district in New Mexico. The first year that I taught at that school the fire alarm did not work. Apparently, it had been broken for awhile. You are so correct- the news was called and within a day or two it was fixed! It was a miracle that the school was not closed down. That was (potentially) so dangerous for both staff and students- not to mention HIGHY ILLEGAL! Elizabeth in Texas

The machine set off the fire alarm, and we had to evacuate in our costumes. And the fire department showed up. Not to mention there was construction on the roof of the school when all this went down. So we have constructing vechiles and fire trucks all at the back of the school, while theres a group of apes and a kid in a loin cloth and old shirt

I honestly remember that Bat news story! I was teaching overseas at the time and wanted to find an article in English, somewhat science related as an example for them to write their own article and remember going "Oh this is great, my students will love it...annnnd it's in Florida" 😑 (They did like it though and the assignment went over well!)
And also I HAVE been dress coded as a teacher- at that same school because all female teachers were required to wear dresses or skirts (not pants/trousers). I'd get called out if I wore leggings under a dress (just a comfort factor for me) but NOPE. I also was not aware of this before I was hired and literally could not find any dress in my size and we were in the middle of nowhere.

The top split of the school was burned along with two halls that were destroyed. The bottom split had to be deep cleaned, and classes were moved into the library. They did catch the guys as there was blood on the snow outside.

My former school was in the news in 2019. I was on medical leave when it happened, and I first found out from a CZcamsr in Texas. I saw the door but not the name of the school but instantly recognized it. I kept asking others to confirm it, and sure enough, it was my school. Needless to say, I didn’t return to that school. I looked up that article a few days ago, and the principal’s name and face was in an article. A student wasn’t allowed to go to the bathroom, peed on themselves, and was forced to wear a trash bag (never called the family). After months of the issue not being resolved, the parents filed a lawsuit.

My elementary school made the news twice. The first time, we had Ruby Bridges come to our school to an assembly to talk to us about her book Through Her Eyes. She signed all our free copies of the book that we got, I got to take a picture with her and a few other students for an article for the Washington Post, and the assembly was televised and broadcasted on the C-SPAN channel (which you can still watch today on their website) The second time we made the news was because of the 12 million dollar fire that burned down the entire school. 😢 I was in 5th grade and our class pet hamster died in the fire. I was devastated when i was told the news 😭

This is a story my dads alot, but hes not computer literate.
Back in 84 or 85 the local high school had the good old shop class
The shop teacher, Mr.....Jukebox, liked to build things from popular mechanics (the old handymans monthly magazine)
Well, Mr. Jukebox got it in his head that the semester project would be to build.....a Helicopter
The metals class was in charge of fabricating the frame, the small engine class built the motor and drive system and the shop class made the hub the propellers bolted into. (My father recalls that the propellers themselves were built by professionals)
End of the semester, just before the end of the year, the industrial classes all gather to see the test of their work.
Mr Jukebox climbs aboard and after some non descript details, he leaves the ground.
According to my father, he probably only went about 30 feet at best amd came straight back down and called it a success.
The administration, however, had a different feeling about the culmination of the semester project(s)
Mr Jukebox was disciplined for...... LEAVING THE STUDENTS UNATTENDED AND LEAVING THE PROPERTY. (The second is partially true, but the first was grossly unfair as those students wouldn't dare look away from the crazy man hovering around in a homemade Helicopter)

I’m in Texas. When I was in high school (a student), our assistant girls golf coach bought beer for the varsity team. Once the girls were drunk, he and one of the girls (evidently they had been dating & she thought that they loved each other) went to his hotel room and had sex. I don’t remember how all this was found out, but it was discovered by the time that they returned to school from the tournament. After making bail, the teacher went to our school and hung himself in his classroom. His first period found him the next morning. We had grief counselors at the school for the rest of the year.

Sophomore year teacher was arrested for doing coke in the bathroom. Junior year for an assignment we had to create a fake news article and one of the students created one about the football team being on steroids and it went viral and for alittle bit no one could tell if it was real or not.
