My old gym teacher would do an “in real life heart circuit”. She would fill the gym with a ton of tunnels, hula hoops, etc . you would get to use one of those sit down scooters and go through each chamber of the heart. She had stethoscopes to hear your heart, jump ropes to get your heart pumping, coloring pages, basketball, those giant bouncy balls you ride on, coloring pages. Then there was a quiz at the end. Miss that class

That’s an awesome teacher. They made a subject really interesting for kids. If you make it memorable, the students will carry it with them to adulthood and likely remember something they would have otherwise forget. It also may have sparked an interest in a student that went on the study anatomy, science or medicine.

But also, I'm reprimanded if I arrive "right on time" they want us there before contract to plan / prep. Can't even do it while kids are pouring in because you already know they want us standing outside our doors. Oh yeah, and the morning meeting after an emergency bomb threat was "go find somebody you don't work with and talk about how you deal with stress." You can't make this up.

I remember once as a student i had a teacher so overworked she was having to cancel assignments to try to get things done for the district and it took me as a student saying i do not like the changes in my teachers behavior due to the stress you all are putting on her and its unaccpetable for them to stop (pick another teacher to overwhelm)

How about stolen paper that I purchased with my own money. The principal SAID we were using too much paper, so he rationed it. We, at that point, had to leave copies for the paras to copy. Thus, the thief stole my paper. The seasoned teacher and ocd (I color coded everything I could) in me kept stored supplies because I remember when. PLUS I am spoiled. I purchased what I needed and wanted with school money and my own. I think it is ridiculous but I would do it again. The students deserve the best I can provide.

    • @tiffanymims8691

I second this idea! I am not a teacher but had kids that had IEPs and sometimes the admin was the problem with the IEP meetings. I have went toe to toe with a principal for basic accommodations for a child with ADHD, sensory issues, Autism, and an anoxic brain injury. Because the child was so passive the principal thought he didn't need an IEP. To him IEPs were for kids with behavioral problems. I educated him and called an IEP meeting involving the state's parent advocate for special education. The school's response was to bring a bunch of district people in, there was 16 people in that meeting! He got his butt reamed by the assistant director of special education in one of the largest districts in the state because he was not allowing basic accommodations for my stepson who needed them.

Straight up - during virtual learning - we had a staff meeting (virtually) and we were doing some kinda PD, I don't remember, but we went on a 5 minute break. Both me and my bestie were in front of the computer (and a few other people were too), but most people got up and left to go to the bathroom or whatever. So I was trying to help my bestie b/c she had been having trouble with her computer mic - I was calling to her over the meeting, asking if it was fixed. My principal comes on and says --- "This needs to be quiet." At which point, I got annoyed, muted my mic & snapped my bestie - "Well, excuse me! I thought this was BREAK time, not QUIET time."
My microphone was not muted. I must have mis-clicked. Because the next thing I hear is our tech teacher saying, "Mrs. Kymmico, you're not muted." So, I muted myself and never said anything about it ---- but I have now become a legendary funny story at my school, because my principal never retaliated.

You're not alone in hating meetings!! As an electrician who is doing working in an new building to expand a hospital the GCs (general contractor) are very safety oriented. We have a pre work meeting every morning that can be as simple as a 5 min. "it's Monday don't screw anything up" on up to a 45min. meeting depending on if the big wigs are around or if our safety division is there going over changes to how we are supposed to do stuff.
Once that's said and done and we get to our work areas we have to take another 10-15 mins to fill out a PTP (pre task plan) form amongst ourselves and list what we're doing, any risks involved and how to minimize or eliminate the risks. We can't use the same one for multiple days it has to be different every day even if it's the same task in the same area.

I don't know if they still do this but when I was in elementary I remember teachers giving us a "classroom supplies wishlist". We weren't required to buy anything but it was appreciated by our teacher if we could at least bring one item from the list (e.g. box of pencils, crayons, markers, tissues, paper). My family didn't have a lot of money but my mom was good at finding sales for at least one of these items or we'd go to the 99¢ store (when it's was still 99¢ lol). We'd usually bring tissues or printer paper because other kid's parents usually choose to bring in the art related supplies and could afford it. As these small kids we'd walk into school with these shopping bags. We'd ask each other who brought what to class and feel so accomplished at least help a little bit (even one box of tissues was congratulated). And some one couldn't bring anything we just say "oh don't worry we'll share!"
But there was always that one kid whose parents were the real MVP and bought the luxurious Crayola 64 pack, Crayola markers pack, AND Crayola colored pencils for each teacher. AND LET ME TELL YOU WE WERE ALL IN AWE WHEN WE SAW THIS AS KIDS. One kid even whooped and fist pumped.
After that the teacher always told us to be respectful of the gifts our fellow classmates brought in. Not every kid understood this would do something stupid and almost ruine the Crayola access for everyone. Some students (myself included because I knew these supplies were expensive and a privilege) would get mad at these rude kids.
BUT one time it got really serious. A kid thought it would be a good idea to take some makers and some scissors and cut apart these markers to see inside. They even thought maybe the different colors would each be different. Sure the teacher was upset but calm (the whole I'm not mad, I'm disappointed) when she found out but some of us fellow classmates were MAD.
"How could you do that Brigette was nice enough to get these for OUR class"
"Cut up your own markers at home"
Someone even muttered loudly enough. "Not everyone's family can afford nice markers."
"Your reason for doing it is stupid"
It all went really quick and as soon as the word stupid was thrown in teacher intervened with her mad "mom voice".
The marker destroyer was nearly in tears and the teacher had us as a class apologize to the boy and had the boy apologize to the class.
[I've got another elementary story where we made a sub cry (I'm sorry) but I'll save that for another time]
Edit: maybe I'll put that short story in the comment section of another podcast about substitutes.

I’m a government teacher and we didn’t have a textbook, we also were not provided with ANY TEACHING MATERIALS AT ALL. We created all of the materials following the teaching notes in the standards online, and those aren’t great and actually some of the notes are incorrect. Got nothing, literally NOTHING. My school was good about supplies though, we got most of what we needed. Lots of SPLOST in our community

At my school, in a middle of a meeting, the principal received his yearly evaluation results (He was the worst!). He started screaming and telling the teachers that they were all ungrateful and they should all move to other schools if they didn't like the way he was. The worst part is that a very important sponsor (a billionaire from India) was present at the meeting because he wanted to donate tons of money and equipment to improve the school and the student's education. He looked at him and said: "I just realized what is the problem at this school. You!" The sponsor left and he never returned. The principal was removed from that school at the end of the school year after 10 years of terrorizing teachers. True story!

i had the WORST P.E. teacher. i sprained my ankle one weekend, and during school she talked to the security officer (person who watched the school cameras) and asked if i was limping in the halls. i hadn't been as much because i was trying to recover and distracting myself with socializing, but my ankle was still sprained and they BOTH ACCUSED ME OF FAKING. literally, i had notes from my MOTHER (who NEVER sent notes usually) saying i sprained it. stupid teacher said she'd fail me if i didn't participate in the EXCERCIZING CLASS. i took the F. screw that teacher. on top of that, she was the teacher that didn't believe i had breathing issues but was required by my IEP to let me walk for the "mile long run warmup" every day. she was awful towards me but she was also the only reason i was able to do archery and tennis, because the other teacher did hockey and soccer instead and i hated both of those. (had him as a teacher a different year and was dissappointed i didn't get to do tennis or archery.)

Our last staff meeting this past year was about what we hoped for next school year. This was May 6th and we haven’t even started the state testing or wrapping up our class subject testing.
Our principal asked us our opinion on if kids are still allowed their cell phones when they are let into the school until 7:30. So like 10 minutes of cell phone use in the building then they should be out away.
About 98% of the teachers voted that cell phones are to be in their bags as soon as 7:20 when they are let in to the building.
Our principals then started to argue that their wasn’t an issue and “we will think about this”. People were mad and I guess many people went to the principal’s office to argue the case. They basically had us vote but want to do what they want to do. A lot of us saw red that day.

One of the worst staff meetings I ever attended was one in which an egotistical AP handed out a puzzle piece to all the teachers and went on an on about how we are all "pieces of the puzzle." This lasted about 30 minutes. Then he had us all find the teachers with the same puzzle piece color and sit at a table with them. Then he kept expounding on this topic. This is the same AP who gas lit me in front of a chronically misbehaving student and his mom. Best thing I did was leave that school.

  • @RebekahFOnlineTeaching

I used to work at a school where I would buy some things and send in the receipts ($20 here and there for Kinder crafts to make and send home) and I kept getting repremanded by the principal for spending too much but she never told me what the budget was. If she just said it's $50 a year or $200 a year or whatever it was I would just limit to that and buy the rest of my pocket if I needed to. After a while, I stopped giving the receipts to them.

My biggest problem is the fact that they send emails about retirements, births & deaths, etc which is great for building a community, but no one knows about the fact that there is a singular reply option. I not need to hear from Don, Dan and Dinah about their congratulations or condolences 😡

My mom had a coworker get sassy during a meeting. The instructional coach at her school called a meeting and someone said something along the lines of "I have more important things to be doing." And the IC said sarcastically, "Go then, if it's so much more important." Mom's coworker got up and left and IC stood there in shock for a minute. (This instructional coach is also one of very few teachers that ever had a problem with me as a student, and it wasn't because of me.)

I convinced my principal to reward us for bringing in copy paper by allowing us to wear jeans for bringing in copy paper. I had a boxes of copy paper that I got for free. I wore jeans the whole year. I want everyone to know, educators in the US are still allowed the 250 above the line deduction on school supplies purchased, and prior to 2017 they were allowed to write off the remainder as part of their itemized deductions with other miscellaneous deductions subject to a 2% floor for unreimbursed employee expenses. That is one thing I have been waiting to be added back in, if not added entirely as an above the line deduction. Speaking as a Tax Preparer

THEN they came up with the bright idea to add PD on Saturdays that were mandatory because we were also a school on probation. I left a quarter of the way through the year…and we had an extended day! Our school day ended at 4:15. It was horrendous!

Every year, local stores over stock school supplies, so about October, everything is on sale to make room for Christmas stuff(spend about $50 on $300 stuff). My friends and I buy a bunch of lose leaf/notebook papers, crayons, colored/No.2 pencils and sharpeners. We then I have our kids, little by little, give to their teachers the items. January/February, We send the rest, in a boxes, to a few classrooms who need it. I remember my teachers using their own money to make sure we have everything all year.
(This year the schools got a huge donation, so they didn't need it. We donated to other schools this year.)

I taught MS/HS science that involved labs, yet there was nothing for supplies. HOW can you teach science concepts without lab material??? So I had to use my own money to get material. For my chemistry class I had a book entitled Kitchen Chemistry. At least I could go to grocery store to material instead of science lab catalogs. I spent $250.00 many times over.
A local radio station was giving away clickers, but you had to have a good reason for needing it because of stress. I made my short and sweet - I teach middle school. I got one right away!! I kept it in my desk and when the kids got to me, I would pull it out and start clicking madly without speaking or looking at anyone. I would gradually slow it down, stop, and then put it back in my desk and continue on with what I was teaching. Each year my classes got to the point that they knew what was happening as soon as it came out. they hated the metalic clicking noise so much that they realized quieting down quickly made the noise go away...
