Although it is true that the ratings used to be pretty tough here in Germany when it comes to violence, things have changed quite a lot. Nowadays, most violent games just get an 18 or sometimes even a 16 rating. Even swastikas are fine as long as the game doesn't promote Nazism. Bans are extremely rare and usually don't occur because of violence.

Here in the United States, we actually have _another_ rating system for TV shows. It goes Y, Y7, G, PG, 14, and MA. It's basically the MPA rating system, but with extra tags for child-oriented content (Y for children of all ages, Y7 for children 7 and up), and no distinction between R and NC-17.
Well it seems there is a distinction between R and NC-17 now! Kind of. You see I found out hentai companies a slapping a TV-MA on their blu-ray and claiming censored version is TV-MA and the uncensored version is 18+ only! It seems someone to the "TV-MA is 17+" part to literally!
Also I'm confused on how the German ratings compare. You see in the US Interspecies Reviewers was released under a hentai label but in Germany it was rated FSK 18 so does that mean they aren't rated the same? Because FSK 18 is allowed on streaming in Germany whereas even the streaming version was censored to TV-MA. Also Australia does have an X-18+ (as mention in the video) and it was banned over there. However also as mentioned in the video the censored version was MA-15+
12:40 now that’s kid friendly 👍

Australia has always been weird with anime ratings. Have no clue what those series mentioned are in 6:02 but Azumanga Daioh cops an MA15+ because of one joke about drinking pool water from a teacher directed at schoolgirls wearing unflattering swimsuits (maybe hasn't aged well but thats still rated higher than Akira). The other volumes are rated G-PG in comparison.
I hate how our politicians tried to demonise an entire medium based on a few of the most extreme examples. It is be like judging movies based on purely the Texas chainsaw massacre.
That joke about the pool water must have gone in one ear and out the other for me. I always assumed that the MA15+ rating was because of the scene where the characters assign themselves nationalities based on the size of their breasts (for those who haven't seen it, it's a lot more subtle than it sounds from that description).

@@yahirsolorio8795 Interesting and accurate way of putting it
Apparently sure, but the " accurate " thing that was usually labeling videos for children when it has kids content on it, I mean that's reasonable. but even more absurd is that some videos are often like random memes with transitions or snippets from any kind, or video games that are labeled for kids. and even worse is there are no comment section, ( which means no justin Y and no some guy without a mustache ect ) and it's never going away anytime soon. I’ve always found it insane that the Spider-Man games are classified 16. What screwed up parent is gonna ban their 15 year old from playing them?
As a parent, a classification based on target demographic or capability to understand would be very useful, I have a 3 years old and I like to watch movies and shows together with him, but sometimes the cartoons are boring for his age, and before watching I can only know if its "morally acceptable for children", when I actually want to know if its colourful, if its boring, dialogue heavy, has a complex plot, or even if some prior knowledge is needed (like if its based in some fairy tail or folklore and its pointless for who doesnt know the base material) those kinds of useful things, but of course politicians care not to if something is detrimental to the people and should be replaced for something actually useful

Fun fact: In Sweden the South Park movie is rated a 7 or older and so is Love Actually (by the way this is the rating of the Toy Story movies). Plus the highest rating a movie can get in Sweden is 15+ which can still be watched by a child 11+ with their parents present. I'm from North Europe, Finland and we also use that UK pegi rating thing. The additional marks such as fear, drugs and stuff also show up in the corner of the television on the start of movies that are broadcasted on tv channels
Hearing about the Hays code just makes it weirder to look at some of the old Disney stuff and see how it compares today. Stuff like Pinocchio drinking beer on Pleasure Island in the original 40s movie while in the reboot it's root beer instead. Or how in the Make Mine Music DVD, footage was edited to rub out the briefly-visible breast of a girl shown dressing in one sequence, which apparently no one had beef with in the 40s (granted that may have something to do with the audience not being able to pause in theatres, but able to do so in DVDs, but still...)
That and it's really weird how Dumbo was allowed to be made with its having an entire scene basically be an absinthe-trip sequence. I guess it's not superfluous if it's pivotal to the plot? And don't get me started on Snow White - though I guess maybe someone actually had the thought that maybe the implication that the queen tortured a guy by letting him die of thirst with a glass of water inches out of his reach would fly over most kids' heads and they'd just see a spooky, scary skeleton (which I probably did as a child, I only remember watching that as a teen and wondering how the hell something with a scene like that was G-rated).
So everyone is just going to ignore his creativity in naming every movie perfectly?

There is a good reason for why every country has their own separate rating systems for any kind of media instead of having one single consistent rating system, *and it mainly has to do with cultural differences.* Some content may be seen as tame in one country, but it may be seen as offensive oversees, so having one single rating system for everything in every single country in the world would cause more problems because we all have different laws, different religions, therefor we all react differently to the content from other places. So having different rating systems is more necessary than you think, because this way, said rating systems line up well with the laws and moral standards of the specific country it was designed for, it may be seen as clunky and unnecessarily complicated, but it just works better this way, it is very important and it should always be justified.

I remember watching three ninjas strike back when we randomly found it on Netflix.I got reminded of that when you mentioned the other film.
Here in Ireland we use a mixture of the UKs system, and our own which is ifco (Irish film classification offices). Ifco is a bit more lenient than the uk one, and on dvd boxes both classifications are there and they are sometimes different. I have a few dvds that say they’re both 18s and 15s on the box, depending on the classification. It’s a bit odd, and I’m not sure which one is enforced in shops.
Similar to how US releases have an American and a Canadian rating
I was nine years old when I watched *The Exorcist.* After that, I played the *Scary Maze Game.*
_It was worth it._

Okay but... fear needs a warning? Horror i can under but the very concept of being afraid?
"No Billy, you can't play that! The main character gets scared!"
@Alfie Stott how on earth does a skylanders game get a basically horror rating in general?
@GamerGenix (Jedi Bob) no no, don't whoosh them i was genuinly asking, its just weird they call it fear instead of horror-
Yeah also fear could be anything! Like there's a phobia of being scared of chairs it's called Epiplaphobia. So you might as well put fear rating on anything.
@@Guywithachair Lol google Arithmophobia, Arithmophobia and Xanthophobia
@@78anurag Woah the fear of numbers? The fear of *yellow* how do you even fear those things?
This video is underrated. You deserve more views and subs.
This was super exited as you said
I love when kids are the main character of shows or movies they aren't allowed to watch.
Ikr, the people who rate stuff are such hypocrites
Good Boys is a self-aware example.
Cuties, however, doesn’t count because it’s rated U in France (all ages) where it was made even if it got an NC-17 in the US.
France didn’t have a problem with the film and they actually liked it.
And speaking of an NC-17 film, the anime Perfect Blue got it.
I don’t know why the MPAA decided to give Perfect Blue an NC-17 when it is tame compared to Black Swan, which is pretty much a live action remake of it.
I am also laughing at how A Serbian Film had to be censored to get an NC-17 rating and that the uncut version is unrated.
@@HydraSpectre1138 I have researched the French rating system and I feel this is something we should talk about more than the MPAA to be honest. There are many films that are sexual and violent that do get 'U' ratings in France. My assumption is that the French culture is more liberal, mature, strong, independent, shameless, and unique. Something that the US may sadly not match, but that is fine. Cultures are cultures. It is also a good thing that the French rating system is also understandable as us, and sometimes questionable.
Tous publics (U): Breakfast Club, Harry Potter, American Pie
12+: Sleepy Hollow, Pulp Fiction, Carrie (both versions)
16+: Perfect Blue, Reservoir Dogs, From Dusk Till Dawn, Dawn of the Dead (both versions), Requiem For A Dream, Fight Club, etc.
18+: Serbian Film
I kind of believe that France is stronger than any other country as far as I am aware.
@@readerofmanga I would actually say the French rating system is wrong with Cuties since it was pretty much CP.
Then again, sensible countries would have banned the film outright. But only Turkey has done that.
Made in Abyss: *sweats nervously*
youtube video: "shows one drop of blood"

12:23 best part is that concept art confirms that it was red paint, not blood as Bucketheads were gonna wear a painters suit
Ok Listen is just red paint ok you kangaroo underwear
I've always been kind of fascinated by film ratings and I have no idea why.
Here in New Zealand we used to get Australian copies of movies with their ratings printed on the box, and then we'd slap our ratings sticker on over the top of it. Being able to see both made it quite interesting when the ratings were substantially different.
DVD copies of the film Henry and June are rated PG in Australia (and people thought watching Love Actually with their parents was horrifying), and R18 in New Zealand, and conversely, VHS and DVD copies of The Enforcer (the Dirty Harry one) are rated R18+ in Australia and PG in NZ. And I find that sort of thing funny.
