CORRECTIONS: (thanks to comments!)
- Earthbound's anti piracy doesn't make the enemies stronger, it just heavily increases their spawn in rate to reduce the performance of the game.
- Batman: Arkham Asylum only disables gliding, but at one point in the game has a random grapple point that sends you outside the map if you lock onto it.

Thanks so much for watching! - Zábava
Wait, they got Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan together, only to then shoot a anti-piracy commercial and NOT one of the greatest action movies of all time?
Now THAT'S illegal.
Its not the only thing they team up with.
To then get sued by (the song playing in the background) the song's creator for illegally using their song without consent
The duo we never knew we needed
Crap, now I genuinely wanted to see a movie where Arnold and Jackie team up together like a classic 80's movie.
The funny thing is that there is a movie with the two of them. The film is a joint Russian-Chinese production. I don't remember the name, but it's about a traveler on his way to China
The really funny thing about that Anti-Piracy ad that was shown at the beginning was that the song that was played throughout the PSA wasn't even approved for usage by the original artist, leading to a huge copyright lawsuit.
It's quite ironic if you think about it, an ad made to spread awareness on piracy and help prevent it ends up doing just exactly that anyways.
“Why Anti-Piracy ad, you were the chosen one. You were supposed to destroy piracy not join it. You were supposed to bring balance to the DVD industry not leave it in darkness”
While trying to prove Anti-Piracy is bad they Pirate themselves.
A comment is missing from this post
From what I've looked up it's not the "You wouldn't steal a car" ad but actually a different Anti-Piracy ad from Holland. Where the original ad was only intended for a film festival. After the festival however, the PSA was released to the general public. Meaning it took royalties from the original artist.
You wouldn't steal a song
Correction for Earthbound's anti-piracy, it doesn't make the enemies stronger, it just cranks up the spawn rates to insane amounts.
To the point where the game slows down significantly
🤓
@@snoods1628 yes I am a big earthbound nerd, thank you for noticing
yeah and from what i heard the game just crashes if you encounter an enemy in some areas i think
@@snoods1628 Holy fucking shit. The joke is dead
One of my favorite anti-piracy measures was for enter the gungeon. This one wasn't built into the game itself, but there's a specific mod which when downloaded, would check to see if you were running a pirated version of the game. If for some reason you were, the mod took it personally. It would open up two pages in your web browser of choice: one was a link to the LazyTown classic you are a pirate, while the other was the steam page for the actual version of the game.
That's hilarious. What's the mod, if I may ask?
@@Kutomi1 unfortunately I can't recall its name.
@@Kutomi1 i believe it's mod the gungeon or something
I would also like to add, when you do actually boot up mod the gungeon, you would be teleported to and impossible bossfight, and after once you died, then your web browser would open up the steam page and the music video!
@@lobzoy thanks!

Well, there go my plans for the weekend

Without this video I wouldn't have known that piracy is, in fact, illegal. Thank you diamondbolt for this enlightening information
And crimes.
Dude I was pirating so many games until I saw this video, I have now deleted all of the games and am now turning myself into the police
omg hatty hattington
Funny how it’s illegal but a bunch of us do it all the time anyways
I’m not afraid of the police detaining me for being awesome
Arkham Asylum actually only disabled gliding, but a random grapple point would sometimes appear and when you grappled towards it you would be sent to the black abyss outside the map.
The Batrooms
Thanks for the correction!
I Think inn arkham city they made 1 jump impossible to do as well. I remember pepole crying over it on different forums. I bet the developers were having fun during that time. Pepole who did buy the game just didn't know or understood. 😂
I distinctly remember hearing about one of the devs at Rocksteady telling someone who couldn't get past a mandatory gliding segment of Asylum due to pirating it, "it's not a bug in the game's code. It's due to a bug in your moral code."
@@russelldoty2743 Yeah, this one actually made it on BBC also. The quote has been attributed to Eidos community manager..
That reminds me.. Arkham Asylum was EIDOS game, god I feel old
Honestly, the Cross Roads one is so hilarious because it's basically "Oh you pirated the game? OK. Well, here's the thing." *leaks their personal information*

There was one from a game called freedom planet that I really liked. It was kinda similar to shapes and beats in that the game’s main characters call you out on it but basically say ‘we’ll let it slide this time but if you like the game please consider actually buying it’
The dev of jsab calls you out.
I mean... more developers shuld do demo's again. That way you could try the game before buying it. I know pepole pirate games to try the games out before buying them, but I also do know pepole also do it to not buy anything. 🤷♀️
Actually, that "anti-piracy" measure in Freedom Planet, I hear doesn't get triggered even if you pirate the game. And so, the audio files for it are just left in the internal files of the game. It literally has Lilac and Carol talk to the player about the game being a pirated copy, only for Lilac to say they're gonna led the player play the game anyways, and that if the player wants the sequel, they should fund the devs, and then Carol gets abit greedy in mindset. Lilac then says the URL to the page to make donations for the game. Obviously, the game devs did get enough funding even with this unused not really being "anti-" antipiracy measure, as a sequel to the game did get released.
I find the Just Shapes and Beats one so charming. He would have fun making it and would just ask if you would talk about the game, you feel bad since he's just an indie dev. Also that Crossing Days one... jeez!!!
The cross days one could easily be used to harm other people. Fill yours or the target’s desktop with shady perhaps illegal material. Download it, fully knowing what will happen. Fill in the target’s information and then they’re doxed and made to look like an awful person.
Yea it’s just a dumb revenge boner thing
This was probably made by Makoto Ito himself
yup
if they can't prove it was downloaded intentionally then they really can't do anything.
That infamous anti-piracy ad also committed piracy in and of itself by using a bit of music they commissioned for the ad, which the creator was led to believe was ONLY to be shown at a European film festival, outside of that festival in like a million places without the original creator's consent.
I will never NOT find that bit of trivia funny as hell.
I imagine a child who loves pirates and gets an anti piracy screen and goes: “Hooray! I’m a pirate argg!”
I'm glad you mentioned the Pokemon FireRed "buy it or die" being fake/added in by a cheeky ROM dumper. That one DidYouKnowGaming video led a lot of people to think it's real, when no legitimate ROM of the game contains that text anywhere in the code.
"You wouldn't download a car"
I would
*Devs add a new challenge to the game to stop piracy*
Kaizo players: We call this a difficulty tweak!
"YOU CALL THAT PIRACY? WE CALL IT A DIFFICULTY TWEAK!" -the cloaker Payday 2
That classic ”Piracy is Illegal” PSA and those R4 DS cards just opened a memory in my Childhood
I can’t remember the name of the game, but at one point, it basically would repeatedly play the word “Pirata” slower each time along with a high pitched beep each time the word was said. Then it would turn off your console.
Imagine all the kids who were legitimately traumatised because of that…
Edit: catdude pointed out the name of the game is La Abadia del Crimel.
I remember watching a video with that.
I'll check what it is and let you know if I can find it.
The game is called la abiada del crimel
I gotta wonder if some old creepy pasta stories were some kids game accidentally setting off the anti piracy stuff and them not knowing what was happening and assuming "eh probably haunted"
"Did you know that piracy, is a crime!"
"And that crime, is illegal!"
"You wouldn't do a crime, would you!?"
Oh man... that Piracy is a crime bit was nostalgic, I miss my old VCDs. Thanks for bringing it up.
School Days isn't memed for being a bad anime, it is pretty infamous for reverse character development and the protagonist getting hated for cheating and treating the girls badly. The reason it is meme'd is for its final episode being so unexpectedly violent that the japanese tv channels decided to pull the airing and instead show footage of a boat on a river for 30 minutes. It was later rebroadcasted heavily censored during the night. Since then people like to say "Nice Boat!" in response to censorship or other occasions. Aside from that, the game also had a minigame where chibi versions of sekai and kotonoha were going at each other with their prefered yandere weapons. This also got memed, parodied and referenced alot.
7:40 god damn Garry is a legend
You should have mentioned the DS version of Michael Jackson the Experience, because it had a funny anti-piracy measure. With the developers being from Brazil (the DS version was made by Ubisoft São Paulo), they put a really funny/annoying anti-piracy schtick. When played in certain flashcarts and emulators (I had no problem on my R4, but you can find some people with less luck), the sound of Vuvuzelas would be played along the song, and no prompts would be displayed on screen (the game on DS was a Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents clone).
Ahaha, I had that one in there initially but didn't like the segment so I cut it, but it's definitely one of my favorites.
I remember the absolute BOP that was that "You Wouldn't Steal A Car/TV/Anything At All." AD. I vibes to it then just skipped it every other time.
Anti-Piracy screens and "secrets" were the best back in the day. Most of them were so mysterious and strange and slightly creepy, but also imposed a rule and force/feeling of doing something very wrong.
Nowadays it's more based around impossible enemies and stats or mechanics locked away from you.
(P.S. I'm mostly saying this because I LOVED the Sonic CD Secret Screen (the origin of "Majin Sonic"). Especially the US version with its creepy boss music.)
having mechanics locked away from you just feels like a normal experience today if you don't pay the dlc
I'm a game developer, and I can say from firsthand experience that anti piracy is waste of time. They'll always be cracked eventually, so the best you can do is make a spooky anti piracy so that people talk about your game
8:30 I would argue this one could prompt a class action lawsuit by the people that got doxxed.
0:01 I mean, if stopping piracy meant I can spend time with Jackie Chan AND Arnold Schwarzenegger then I would definitely do that.
0:50 this honestly looks real. It fits the standard, but ANIMATED.
I love how some of these games can still be completed, and even became speedrunning categories, with the anti-piracy measures!
Those Anti-Piracy PSA's Have Become An Odd Source Of Nostalgia For Me
It's nice to see one of these videos that focuses on actual anti-piracy measures and not cliche, hacky creepypasta BS.
Also, that Cross Days bit... there's no fking way that's legal!
Neither is piracy
@@procrastination_productionsPretty sure doxing people is worse and more illegal than not paying for a hentai game.
@@procrastination_productions Two wrongs don't make a right, especially when there are a lot of legitimate reasons one could have to pirate a game.
@@procrastination_productions Getting all of your personal information published online seems like a pretty harsh punishment for downloading a game without paying
@@procrastination_productions I don't think leaking someone's fucking details is a good response.
Freedom Planet 1 has a similar message to Just Shapes and Beats where Lilac and Carol (two of the main charatcers) ask you to support the game by donating to the devs and that none of the game's features will be restricted. I wish more people knew about this one.
a diamondbolt update is better than any christmas present
The mirrors edge one was even worse than you made it sound because, as you would slow down whenever you go to the edge of a rooftop, it literally meant that you couldn’t get past the very start of the game so you were just stuck on the same building for the whole time.
I only discovered your channel this year but you've quickly grown to be one of my recent favourites. Your videos just have a certain energy that keep me really entertained, looking forward to more great content next year.
I was one of those kids that had those DS cartage of every DS game. My dad got it for Christmas for me and my sister. So every month or so, my dad would tell me and my sister of what games we like and what games we wanted to replace.
So if we wanted to replace a game my dad randomly pick out a game for us so just we would have variety, instead of just playing Mario and Sonic games all the time.
If you wan't to experience the Serious Sam 3 unkillable scorpion, it's on the workshop as a mod. It is called "DRM Scorpions", so you can experience the pain too.
Here's one that is slightly creepy and asshole-ish: in the Famicom/NES game Gimmick!, in one of the final levels the game checks for a sprite of a bug on a castle wall. If it isn't there then the game is genuine, but otherwise the game freezes you on a black screen that says "BLACK HOLE".
Gimmick! is a very difficult game to play and in order to even unlock the last level and get the proper ending you have to go out of your way to find a treasure on each of the 5 levels, and then doing tricky platforming or solving a puzzle, or both. Imagine all the effort someone had to go through to get to the last level, only to be greeted with that screen.
Okay, so I've watched through the entire video, and I was expecting something like Tech Rules' video (highly reccomend as well, goes in depth into some other games not mentioned) but this was, IMO, more informative. I haven't watched you in a while, but I'm probably gonna binge watch your content now.
That anti piracy ad terrified me when I was younger
8:25 So we just gonna breeze past that
Piracy sucks but the way the gaming industry is moving forces me to look for "alternative" ways to acquire my games than what the companies intended for me to take. Most games I buy are cheap indie games.
Not just the gaming industry. TV shows, especially animated ones, are suffering to the point that piracy is one of the only ways to actually watch the show.
Remember! Piracy is a victimless crime when it comes to giant companies doing stupid shit :D
@@robbys5236 oh yeah I guess pirating TV shows is also big these days
to me pirating shows is the default option because most streaming services don't work in my country or have heavy region locked content lol
@@robbys5236 Oof thats too real. Seriously if they just had like a bunch of specific anime or animated show on one streaming service we’d be good
@@lambybunny7173 Piracy is not a serious crime at least (victimless crimes can still be quite serious), and is easy to get away with. *I was just informed that it would be a tort not a crime and be decided in civil courts not criminal courts, if any*
Dude, your videos are always so entertaining. I'll have a minute or two left in the video and realize I'm already almost done watching in a 10-20 minute video. Keep up the good work.
Happy New Year Diamondbolt, Thanks for making videos!!
EarthBound’s Anti-Piracy is like Next Level evil because they prevent you from seeing the best ending in video game history.
In mgs1 at one point you are intstructed to contact a character via codec by looking for her frequency on the back of the case. As in the back of game cd case.
This however doesn't work anymore because we have the internet.
Good to see you again, Bolt. Hope you had a merry Christmas, and happy New Year!
Doxing's got to be a worse crime than pirating a game...
it is
Cause it is. Illegally downloading games is bad, but leaking someone’s name and home address is even worse.
9:23 twitter users when their darling celebrity of the week said a word that kind of sounds like a slur 8 years ago
Good old anti-piracy. Always severely underestimating my willingness to download cars.

My primary school had a CD, which had the anti-piracy advertisement of the start of it
This was a funny informational video! Thanks Adam!
5:21 LMFAO, LOL. The devs did it manually!?
My favorite thing about the sims 4 blur measure is that the most popular mod just completely removes the blur...
Happy 2022 Adam, and merry late Christmas!
I assume the friendly anti-piracy screens that don’t hinder gameplay and politely ask the pirate to support the game if they enjoyed it are more effective at actually stopping piracy.
0:12 OH NOO WAYY WHAT
Merry Christmas bolt and everyone! 🎄⛄
I remember my dad getting one of those ds r4 cards, playing Pokémon white 2, seeing I got no exp. Many years later I just played the game and beat it while getting no exp
How?
@@watching7721 never underestimate the power of three legendaries and a lvl 59 Azumarill
I'd like to point out that the DRM Arachnoid in Serious Sam 3: BFE is now a gamemode addon on Steam Workshop.
Look up _DRM Scorpions._ It's a treat. It turns the game into this frantic horror, and the enemy is a skittering hot-pink blob with an arm-rifle.
Also, for _Alan Wake,_ the DRM gave Alan an eyepatch.
It gave Barry Wheeler (the comic-relief character) *two.*
That's bitchin'.
_Pokémon's "Buy It Or Die"_ is a hack. The technical explanation is that there's a bunch of slack-space near the end of the ROM that's normally padded with bullshit or left blank, and the game wouldn't look there because that's just junk made to pad out the file-size. The _"Buy It Or Die"_ message was put there, and the original conversation was hacked to add a jump-and-return for that region.
If it were a legit copy, that text would be in a nearby location contemporary to the rest of the conversation (which would make it harder for hackers to put there without significantly distorting the layout of the ROM code), not at the very end where you could put whatever the hell you wanted without fear of distorting the ROM and breaking something important.
Happy new years and stuff diamondbolt!
Haven’t even watched trough the video yet since its only been a few seconds but this video is another classic diamondbolt W
Happy New Years, Diamondbolt! Don't be a pirate! You've gained enough respect as it is!

So that explains why i couldn't play BiS when i got that cartridge thingy when i was a kid. It was an anti-piracy measure!
I would much rather buy officially if I can. The only real justification for me personally is if the game isn't released in North America, or if the mods are considered piracy. But piracy is like underaged drinking. Would I do it? No. But will I report it? No, as long as they aren't driving
You know the anti piracy ad at the beginning of this video, the one that increased piracy?
Yeah, apparently it used pirated music.
Merry Christmas Bolt! :D
Great video. I love your channel.
I am one of those kids who loved spyro, but for some reason never managed to beat the game, and never knew why.
I remember trying so many times, because I loved it so much, but never managing to finish. Mind you, my mother language is not English, and when I was that young I didn't know what the little fairy was saying. I just knew that the sorceress was absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to beat, and that once I got to her my game would make me hate my life 😢
ONE HIT was LITERALLY game over, start from 0%. Absolute nightmare.
p.s.: Now I have the reignited trilogy and it's so worth it; 10/10 would recommend (I have the original version though, not sure about the pirated lol)
One of my favorites that I've read about is "the Michael Jackson experience." Where if it detects a pirated copy it will compress the audio and just blast annoying vuvuzelas over the music. lmao
Bring back the 90s please I miss the old days
Merry Christmas Diamondbolt

During the 2010's, Spyro took a very different route for making people buy in order to play the game.
