Through all the controversy, all his bad decisions, all the rumors, people forget that this was one of the 20th Century's best and funniest comedians, an engaging author, a brilliant filmmaker, a quietly excellent Jazz musician. No, his flaws can't be overlooked, nor excused. Can you separate the art from the behavior of the artist? Can you listen to a Wagner piece, dazzled by its genius without being repulsed by Wagner's vile anti-semitism? Can you laugh at a Cosby routine, or a Naked Gun scene featuring OJ, without a care for the victims of these men who turned out to be sexual predators and, in Simpson's case, a murderer?
This is stuff that keeps me awake at night....

Woody Allen was a very popular stand up comedian. I have a double LP (do you know what those are) of his nightclub routines. His manager said they always had to have someone go with him to the night clubs to push him on stage because he was so terrified. They also held the bucket as he spent the time before his spot vomiting he was so frightened. Fine on stage but terrified to get there.

It's so well written though. His use of language is really unsurpassed. Such phrases as "struck a tremendous shot across the frontal lobe" or "mollified by shiny objects". And then he can be very economic with his words as well like "we gave". He is rushing through on this occasion which is partly nervousness and partly not having enough confidence in his material at the time. Later performances shows when he is starting to enjoy himself. Good job, because there was a time when he was thinking of giving up. But then it was suggested that he give it his best shot for 11 months and if he didn't feel he was getting better he could give up. This prospect seemed to work for him. The pressure was off I guess.
