Newhart had perhaps the best-honed delivery of all time. He just casually cracked us up every time. His patented speech pattern and his brilliant "one-sided telephone conversations" earned him a place as one of the greatest comedians ever.

My father was a pioneer in radio journalism and he had all sorts of priveleges, one of which he adored, which was interviewing Bob Newhart in the green room of the Union Theatre; he had all four of his children with him and mother!
They had a smart talk, both Chicago boys at heart and shared a dryly acadenic approach to sheet lunacy! He was wonderful! Dad was thrilled!

Bob Newhart, I have so enjoyed his comedy and his television series. Loved his book. What a classy entertainer.

"Some of them go down like a rock"....still cracks me up, heard this routine on one of his comedy albums decades ago. What a uniquely funny guy...glad to see him still on TV in 2019!

I agree. He's great and timeless. His performance on the Big Bang last season nearly 50 years after this TV spot is simply remarkable; he is enduring genious!!!! His best friend Don Rickles is no slouch either, another great talent going strong today!. They don't make em like this anymore, sadly......

I have been wishing my whole adult life (@ 50+ years) that Bob Newhart would move in next door to me on the south side of my house, and be my neighbor. That would be so cool, especially since John Candy was my next door neighbor on the north side of my house. Well, I sorta gave up on this wonderful dream after the great John Candy passed away. But, man, what a life that would have been! If you are gonna' dream, bream big, that's what I always say.

You're more likely to be eaten by a shark than dying in a plane crash. Of course, this is because most plane crashes happen over the ocean.

Now why did Jack Paar introduce Newhart : "and SO FAR, certainly one of the nicest" comedians...I think there was quite a lot of competition among comics then, & Paar did get a rep for rudeness!
OMG, I forgot how great Newhart is! :))

"Attention, passengers: We'll be making our descent to the runway at the steepest angle possible. We should be making contact with the runway in the next few minutes. Don't worry -- we'll be just fine. We won't even need to taxi to the terminal. Thank you for flying on Negative Trajectory Airlines!" (I just made this up, because it sounded sort of like Newhart.)

I remember it. Valente didn't go on to bigger things, but she was good... an old-fashioned variety star, singing, dancing, comedy. If I remember correctly, it was on Friday nights. Also, if I remember right, Burnett never had Newhart or Valente on her own show, not even once.

Earlier that season, Bob had been a rotating host, with Carol Burnett and Caterina Valente, of CBS' "THE ENTERTAINERS". By the end of '64, Bob left the show, leaving Carol and Caterina as co-hosts until the series was cancelled that March.

If you think profanity precludes comedy from being high class, you don't understand profanity, comedy or class. Try Le Petomane, Monty Python or John Donne if you want some high class, profane comedy.

I don't think Carol wants to be reminded that was only the "third spoke of a wheel" on "THE ENTERTAINERS" {originally on Fridays, moving to Saturdays in its last theee months}- I don't believe she's ever considered it as "her show" [even though her husband Joe Hamilton was producer, and Bob Banner, formerly executive producer of "THE GARRY MOORE SHOW", was also E.P.- both did the same on HER show], and she's NEVER acknowledged it in any of her memoirs and oral histories...

It's not the Tonight Show, it's The Jack Paar Program. It ran from when he left Tonight in 1962, but there was only one more show after this one in 1965. I'm from the UK, so I don't know what network it was on.
