Watching all these years later, you appreciate how superior the Tonight Show was then. There is literally nothing like it today.
Today's media just wants to be Democrat political propaganda. It also doesn't respect the intellect of the audience. Old shows like Johnny Carson were made by smart people for an audience of decent, smart people. Yes it was frivolous and fun, but these were smart people and they produced content that respected us. Today's shows just want to be woke. So boring.
"Doc" Severinsen is still alive at 96, too!
Just think, Doc was 50 year younger -- age 46
I saw him in concert when I was in college - what a show!
I spoke to Doc and his wife at the Rhode Island airport in 2018. He was returning from a gig on Cape Cod. Still performing at age 90.
Bobs delivery is just as important as the material itself.
94 years young ❤
To get our entertainment fix in 2024, we have to come here and watch Johnny. He was always good for a laugh when he was alive, and he is still doing it all these years after he passed. Thanks, Johnny!
Great point. And I still tape him on my DVR almost every night depending on the guest lineup. He is my wholesome fix. Boomer, signing out.😅🖖
yeah..the current crop leaves a bit to be desired.
@HardRockMiner: It's about 2 AM Saturday morning. Couldn't sleep so I got up and tuned in for some much needed humor. Years ago my then 11 year old son loved to stay up and watch a little late night TV when possible during the week (no school next day). One night I told him he had to go to bed for school the next day. He glared at me and in a very angry and gravelly voice he said "I know what you two do in there at night, pointing to the master bedroom, you watch Johnny Carson"! Then he stormed off to bed. He and his family live 50 miles from us today but as I watched this clip I was expecting the door to burst open and see him shout "Aha! I new I was right."
Sure miss Johnny and all of the tremendous talent he had on his shows over the years.
@@godfreyzilla8608 😅 Thanks for the story and sharing your memories. Take care.
30 40 years later. I’m still falling asleep to the Tonight Show.
Johnny is Super.👍
Bob is a legend.
Newhart always comes off as a genuinely nice guy that you would be glad to have as a friend.
Fascinatingly, he was best friends with Don Rickles, to the point where they vacationed together for decades
They were so good , what happened to this kind of multi talented hosts and guests ? quiet, sharp, elegant, witty , really funny.
People are selfish today.
@@milfordcivic6755 You are probably right. 😉
The kind and talented people are either very old or have died! Thankfully we have these uploads and other sites where we can still see them!
@@ms2189 hopefully after the regressive times some new talents will emerge and, if we are still alive ... we'll be happy to support them , world-wide . I am in France i'd love to see them here also.
Conan can do it all. He combines all the positives and none of the negatives of other hosts. Plus a bunch of his own positives.
I have always loved Bob Newhart and The Bob Newhart Show with Suzanne Pleshette was my favorite. Began watching him on the Ed Sullivan show many years ago.
They were dear friends in real life. Admired each other’s comic genius and warm hearts. Relaxed in each other’s company. Genuine light hearted conversation. A joy to watch. Thank you for this.

I'm from the South, and Bob's is one of the best and funniest Deep South accents I ever heard😂
Bob and Doc...still alive! 94 and 96 years old!! Wow! 🥰❤️
May we all be so fortunate! :-)
Bob’s outfit is a trip! For many years, i NEVER EVER thought Mr. Newhart was funny. However, as a got older, i took a chance and watched his classic TV show on “Hulu” and i loved it. “The Bob Newhart Show” is a classic.
cool story bro
His last show _Newhart_ was fantastic as well
Always been a big Bob Newhart fan. Watched lots of his incredible material. 😂😊
I always thought he was hilarious
Newhart is a master.
Always loved Bob’s phone sketches.
Yep, such dry, straight-faced sketches, and in a way he also kinda reminds me a bit of Father Guido Sarducci
Caught me by surprise to hear Johnny refer to Elvis when he was still alive - so many of my favorites!
Funniest scene ever -- ending of the last episode of the Newhart show, the one in Vermont, with Bob back in the bedroom set from his earlier show. And then Suzanne Pleshette sits up! So smart, so funny.
And it was all just a dream. That was one of the all time great moments in television.
Best ending of any Series…make that two series , bar none. The gasp as the lights came up on the old set..and the sweater gag…..pure class.
Bob Newhart overtime really grew on me. I mean he is such a smart comedian. The master of deadpan. He is the last of that generation.
Bob and Mel (Mel Brooks). I miss any? Lol.

His comedy LPs are still amazing to listen to !!
Bob Newhart + telephone = The Best!
I still have 1 or 2 of his LPs. The bit that comes to mind is the one with the night watchman/security guard at the Empire State Building, when King Kong climbs it.
When Newhart did the skit about the witch doctor talking about his advanced age saying " I don't dance around a hut much anymore." is one example of the little nuances Newhart added to his comedic skits that always increase the levity.
Plus Bob Newhart never used profanity in his comic routines.
Bob would set up such a fantastic premise that most comics would take over the top, but he was so sly with his low ball style that you never knew what was coming next. Except that it would be hilarious.
Bob Newhart Show was kick back!
Bob and Johnny prove that the ties from the Seventies were their own source of comedy.
Ever see a 7" wide tie? My "general shop" teacher, Mr. Bolcar, had one and many other ties. 1968-70.
He was in “Hell is for Heroes” with Steve McQueen. Weird part, but he did his schtick. He was supposed to get on the radio and convince the enemy there were many more of them in one spot on the front line at his position than actually were. It has all his style in it, to the T.
Love Bob Newhart's honesty! Hard to find in a lot of people anywhere!!
The liar thinks everyone is lying
What I have trouble wrapping my head around...... Johnny's show ran 30 years from 1962 to 1992 it seemed to run forever. 1992 to today 2024 means his show has been gone two years longer then it ran....WOW doesn't seem it was that long ago I saw his goodbye show.
Every time a new one of these clips pop-up I think, “Oh no!” and check if the person just died. Bob is still with us.
This is like the fourth time they have uploaded a Newhart clip and each time I have to do a quick google search. Tricks me every time, but I'm really happy that he is still alive.
This set here is the greatest television set of all time. When I was a kid, I thought that the view behind Johnny was real. No set designer has ever done anything better.
He is amazing. His cameo on The Big Bang Theory was wonderful. ❤❤❤❤
It goes without saying how superior this is to any of the late night talk shows we have now.
Those were the good ol' days...
Never really noticed it before but Johnny Carson was quite generous to his guests allowing them to bask in the limelight!
Bob Newhart, I believe, had the first comedy record that hit it big. It was 1960 and #1 on the Billboard "Mono Action Albums" chart for fourteen weeks. AND it won the 1961 Grammy for "Album of the Year." Many people today don't know just how big and well known he was "back in the day." The album is "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart." It is still a classic.
Bob Newhart had major success with stand-up and sketch comedy in nightclubs and his first TV show and with Grammy Award winning albums, then he managed to move naturally into the central role in two long-running comedy series. It only takes talent.
I've always liked Bob Newhart, since I was a kid, in the '70s.
Me to!
@@lightningbrigade4722 same
My dad's copy of Bob's second LP "The Buttoned Down Mind Strikes Back" surfaced after his 80s show ended.
I recommend any of Bob's LPs on Warner Brothers--each one has a gem or two on it.
This is wonderful. Where do the years go…I was 19 when this first aired. In many ways, it seems like yesterday. Thank you for posting this great interview.
Bob is a national treasure.
It's either the full moon, or the shag carpeting on the stage set.
"Hi, I am Larry, this is my brother Darrel, and this is my other brother Darrel". (I VERILY remember that line and I am 45).
Actual I have a brother in law named Darrel
Loved the Bob Newhart show, loved the music and seeing the EL of Chicago area!!
Two good friends working thier magic together. I grew up watching greats like these guys.
Great comedians never die..they just live on thankfully,on you tube ..
Always loved Bob.
As someone who has relatives in cajun country and originally from southwest Louisiana (30 minutes from Texas) and also listened to 60s and 70s country music as a little kid when this aired (and still do), I'm not offended. In fact, I agree with his cajun accent. Even I sometimes have trouble understanding my cajun relatives. Lol.
2 great entertainers. Back when we had real comedy.
That last skit was hilarious ! = )
That tie.😂
Love these old shows! Nothing like that nowadays! Johnny Carson was a great host.
This channel just keeps on bringing the best of Mr Carson and all of his wonderful guests! Thank You!!! ❤️
Don't underestimate a Bob, and Johnny 😅
50 years later and the description of country music is still dead-on accurate...
This was FIFTY years ago! How is that possible?
I always say the same thing in regard to Reggae music.
So very true. Also variety shows in the evenings😊
Great job as Professor Porton
When I was a kid, I wanted to play trumpet because of Tijuana Brass. Doc Severinson was why I was always trying to stay up late for the Tonight Show, back in 6th grade!
Wow that's a tie 😂
Bob Newhart was one of a kind. I was only a child in his The Bob Newhart Show days, but I knew a great entertainer when I saw one. I didn’t really care for Newhart, but I loved that short lived show with Judd Hirsh-was that called Bob? The witch doctor bit was really funny. He had impeccable delivery!
"They were getting Patients Coming in... ..with *STRANGE* Expressions.. ." 😂😂😅😆😅😂😅😅😂😅😅😅
Bob was so under rated as a comedian because of his twoery successful television shows.
Bob is of his game tonight.
always loved Newhart
the pencil catch was epic
This was 50 yrs ago and Bob was really old even then.
Bob is STILL RIGHT!
11:58 -- Johnny takes a quick drag! I don't think the cameraman was supposed to catch that...
She came back fighting her way out 😂
6:33 YUP! More now than back then!!
A genius bumping up against another genius.
The time stamp on these ties is unforgeable! Der Zeitstempel auf diesen Krawatten ....
Came across this right as I was thinking all of youtube is just one video.
Ah, 1974, when Johnny could grab a cigarette and commend on "pretty girl singers".
Love Bob Newhart - but who was that on alto sax coming out of the break? WHEW!
Wow… you can really tell what era this was by the suits!…I thought Johnnys was normal until he stood up!
I agree with Bob.
Doc is dressed like a stud😎
Bob thinks all country music is just one song, and every character Bob ever played is literally Bob Newhart.
Funny, when Johnny was in Jackson, MS he was sent to Millsaps College by the Navy....for many, many, many years, Oxford University in the UK would accept transfer credits from only two schools in the US.....Harvard and Millsaps
He's not wrong. Today it's all about beer, guns and pickup trucks
Bob Newhart was a fabulous comedic original.....I'm sure Jerry Seinfeld was influenced.
This reminds me of a sort of a joke I would pull on people sometimes. You wait for a time when you are with some people who start talking about country music. They will likely be country music lovers. You say, "Have you heard about the big symposium they're having in Nashville next month?" (They will say no, because there is no such thing.) You say, "Yeah. Each year all the top country music producers and writers get together to discuss a topic to advance country music. This year the topic is 'Is there a need for a fourth chord.'"
Back when you could smoke on tv.
Imagine- great comedy without having to constantly swear
6:32 country & western songs
we use to see a doctor who came from germany had a very german accent we asked him about our sons warts on his hands . he said stand the boy out in the full moon if that don't work get some compound w. it will.
Carson is 49 years old here.
Is it me or do people around 50 look younger nowadays?
@thedude4672 yes people of the same age today look a lot younger than 50 yrs ago. Carrol O’Conner was on his 40’s during all in the family
@@artfuldodger8147I smoke and I look younger than all of my friends.
Nobody believes me when I tell them I'm turning 50 this year. Perhaps I'm an exception to the rule.
Smoking is a nasty, awful habit and I do not promote it. Vaping's no better.
People aren't smoking much anymore, no lead in the gas, and nobody bathes in hairspray anymore!
People around 50 today definitely look younger than they did in the 70s and 80s. In fact, people in general had a more aged look when they were younger. Take a look at pictures of high school students, or professional athletes, in the 70s and 80s. 23-year-old elite athletes -- who you'd expect to look great and be really healthy -- look like a 35-40 year old man today. And what I find weird about it is that these people didn't necessarily die younger. I mean, Bob Newhart in the above video is in his mid-forties, and Carson is under 50. Newhart is still alive, at 94 years old. You'd think that if he looks 60 when he is in his 40s that he was aging terribly and probably going to live a short life. But: _nope_ . He's still around.
I'm curious about the real explanation of what the cause is. For example, there's loads of evidence that testosterone levels in men have dropped considerably over the past few decades. Maybe these people don't look older than their ages. They just look the way a man looks when their hormones are properly regulated? That explanation is probably wrong. But, I think there has to be some sort of good scientific explanation. (Another option: Maybe they look older because their environment was more toxic, and we've done more to clean up the air, water, etc.? No clue, honestly. But I agree: it is weird.)
Bob Newhart is only 45 years of age here.
I want Doc's jacket. They can keep the shag carpet.
No but if it's your family living in a homeless shelter together or sending the party guests back home, I'm pretty sure you'll get the guests out of your family's unfortunate futures and safely on their way.
Ppl don't want to put guests through hard times so we want them out of the way of our futures as much as possible before we hold our family fights (hopefully in private)
That full moon thing is definitely real. Not just in your imagination.
What is this song called when Bob started entering the set? 1:15
The title...
It takes all night to do what I used to do all night.
I can't stop vomiting at Doc's monstrous 70s clothes.
It was normal in 1974.
David Allan Coe eventually wrote that country song
Bob's in his golf tournament attire
Yes, but it's a good one.
Weird lighting on this set. ...and those crazy looking ties.
Please please please upload another episode with intro titles
It just struck me that Bob Newhart is Jack Benny Mk2.
Where's Jonie😂
Our Paul Williams? Paulielama?
