I met Johnathan Winters when I was in the Marines training recruits in San Diego. He was doing a pilot for a TV show and was dressed as a Drill Instructor. He ‘borrowed’ one of our recruit platoons and did a walk through as a Drill Instructor. We told the recruits not to laugh. I had been a fan since I was a kid. Our family never missed him when he was on TV and had all his albums memorized. Semper Fi Johnathan and RIP.

He had some weird nights, though -- some where he did nothing but drop bricks and clunkers, and a few (very few) when he was just _mean._ I wish I could cite specifics like shows, hosts, or whatever, but I can't. I just remember being occasionally disappointed in his appearances, and once or twice, shocked by his ability to slice deep.

I will never forget one Tonight Show, and I was a kid at the time, when Jonathan Winters was on and he was apparently manic at the time. But he was so extraordinary, so funny that Johnny just gave him the whole show. Johnny stopped for commercial, came back, and let Jonathan do his thing. There were other guests we never got to see, Johnny just let Jonathan go. Jonathan was not so manic that he wasn't able to appreciate that he had an audience and a task, but he was just manic enough that he was able to keep up a level of performance that I remember to this day. If you could find that day, I would so appreciate seeing it again.

A high school classmate and I were car crazy and working on our cars and listening to one of Jonny's LP comedy albums provided hours of side splitting laughter trying to work on our cars.
