Don't just sing in front of thousands of people. Walk the stage over to, and up, the stairway perfectly in time. Then make your way over to a drum kit, just in time to sit down and play the most iconic drop of all time, while still singing. No biggie. Just LEGENDARY!!!
Exactly 💯
Oh yes for sure & I am a few days of being 80
Yesssss
....."Trained Professional".....
For us.... it's legendary!!
For Phil... It's Tuesday
Possibly the best live version of a song ever recorded.
I really agree!
nah bro comfortably numb pulse exists
... and possibly the most recognisable four seconds of drum beats ever!
@@lilnocare Let's just say that both these songs are in a class all of their own?
It's so sad that Phill Collins is unable to perform any longer. But he's given us Awesome music!
Age eventually gets everyone
@@catlady443He suffered nerve damage in his hands from all the years of playing.
Though we suffer from the loss of his ability, time marches in for us all. It must kill him to not be able to perform. Thanks for ALL the music Phil!
I was so happy I got to go see Genesis in their final tour. Cried the whole time. I saw Genesis live in the 1980's, & have been in love with their music + Phil's solo stuff ever since. He has also been in 2 movies (that I know of) & he is an awesome actor as well. One movie is called Buster, & my favorite one is Fraud. You can watch them free on either CZcams or on Roku. I'll just say that the actor who plays Elrond in The Lord of the Rings is also in it. He was so young back then I didn't even recognize him! Lol!
Everyone else in these comments have been thorough suggesting songs from Phil, so I'll just tell you thanks for doing this one & I look forward to other amazing songs by this legend. He did a duet with Philip Baily in the 80's called Easy Lover. It was released by Philip Baily. The music video is really creative!!!
Y'all have a Happy Easter & a great weekend! 💜
Real Artists don't need to "Fake it" !! It's about the music not the money !! Nothing beats a live performance !! 🤘
No matter how many times I've watched this concert clip, I'm still anxious that he won't make it to the drum kit in time.
Same!!
🤣🤣🤣 Right??!!
I know. I hold my breath every time.
Me too!!!
Sameeee!!!
Phil Collins doesn't lip sync. Just flawless singing is all.
It was in the b red st season of Miami Vice ever!!!
Went to his concert a few years ago when he was/is somewhat of a cripple. He sounded awesome NOT lipsyncing. Yes, there was some degradation, but overall I was super impressed.
Amen
hahah
And there are differences from the studio version, just a few different enunciations and tiny bits of timing.
Oooooo pausing in drum solo is a no no😂. Don’t piss Phil off! What an iconic performance huh?
No lip synching. Just so damn talented. He comes from a time without auto tune.
He's not lip syncing, he's JUST THAT GOOD.
Incredible
YEP!
he is lip syncing when he plays the drums. Not even Usain Bolt has that lung capacity to hit the drums with 70% maximum force and hold the notes perfectly. Don't be fooled
@@glowimagery634thats is not lip sync in genesis he did singing parts while playing drums
@@glowimagery634you mean James Harrison-- if you think sprinters have a bigger lung capacity than brutally strong/powerful/massive- and fast- athletes, Ive got news for you
Take a guess how much lung capacity comes into play at the Combine during max reps x225 on bench.
Whoever came up with the idea of having him on his feet up until that drum crash and he just sits down and immediately bangs it out - that's audio-visual GENIUS
Probably himself.
This was a great video production.
Phil Himself
He’s not only goated as a singer / drummer, but he’s one of only 3 musical performers ever to sell 100 million albums with a group ( Genesis ) as well as 100 million albums as a solo artist. Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney are the other two.
Possibly Beyonce now

My mom was there in France watching this unbelievable concert. She said that at first they couldn’t see the drum set, but when he started approaching the drums came up. People went mental.
That’s so cool. One thing I gotta know, when in the concert was this song? It definitely feels like a last song, or even an encore for the whole concert.
Same
@@devinpelech It was apparently the first song after the intermission and approx and hour and 18 mins into the full concert. And these guys didn't lip sync.
It’s not lip syncing…. It’s called talent. Few current performers have REAL talent. I feel really bad that you missed growing up with true artists. But love sharing them with you now! ❤️

True
That makes me glad I never watched Miami Vice. 😄
@@lonaburgess7724 Huh? 🤔 Why?
Iona might be one of the down-voters. They exist, sadly.
Phil Collins is the GOAT drummer.
Never been into Phil Collins, but that was a breathtaking performance 🤯
Find "A trick of the tail" I think you'll love it! 😉
My favorite Phil Collins song is “I Wish it Would Rain Down”
I LOVE THAT SONG! Alexa knows when I say play Phil that's the first one to play 💜💜💜
Phil pours his heart into it, but Eric Clapton on guitar and Pino Palladino on bass are what really make that song.
and a fun video
@@kelly9876 one of all my time favorite videos, his sense of the absurd is subtle but great
Phil Collins wouldn’t lip sync. There are definitely places that sound different.
My wife and I had the honour of attending his concert a year ago. I can tell you he still sing like how does back then. Sadly, because of his back problems he doesn’t play the drums anymore. That honour was passed down to his son.
The way Amber’s face lights up when she sees the drums…joyful!
One does not simply refrain from aggressively air-drumming when the beat drops
It's a requirement.
Unfortunately, I ended up doing that in 1985. Phil Collins played both Live Aids from Wembley Stadium in London, and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. Phil took the Concorde to NYC, then took a helicopter to Philadelphia. He played In The AIr Tonight on piano. Just him, no backing band. When the drum solo part came up, dead silence. I'm like NOOOOOOO.....
Resistance is futile.

Yes. The song with the video.
Journey great live performance.
Casual Phil. Nothing casual about Phil.
I love how they build the intensity and atmosphere to a crescendo
Absolute brilliance🎉
I love the way Amber always looks like she is just soaking it all in.
Genesis is touring again with Phil. He can't play the drums anymore, but his son is the drummer on tour. His son is amazing!!
How can he even walk to the stage? I saw a clip of him in London very recently and he needed a lot of assistance. Agree, you have to listen to him with Genesis.
Amazing, right? I never thought I'd get to check Genesis off my concert bucket list, but fingers crossed that nothing else happens before then I'll get to see them at Little Caesar's Arena in Detroit at the end of November. Combined with an amazing concert I saw at MSG with both Sting and Peter Gabriel it's the closest I'll ever get to seeing the full 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' lineup. I can't wait!
Wow
@@andreaforro7904 We saw him pre covid in NZ and he sat the whole show with his son on the drums. Great show.

His concet vibrated my entire body for days!!!
No lip syncing here Jay. Yer boy Phil can sing. He is one of the nicest guys in the business.
Please listen to phil singing "against all odds" a beautiful song. Xxxxx
Talented artists can pull off live performances with no tricks.
Oh my favorite of all time = against all odds 😍
one of my favorites for sure
Agreed 💯
Phil Collins can regretfully not drum anymore due to his health condition. He will always be one of the most incredible artist ever! Love him!
But his son is now his drummer. That’s kind of beautiful. 💜

Yes, I was thinking the same thing. Thanks for telling the audience.
@@cjturner370 A chip off the old block! Following in dad's footsteps.
My oldest daughter and I saw Phil Collins in Denver in 2019 and it was an awesome concert. Seeing Phil Collins was one of my bucket list concerts and he didn’t disappoint.
Miami Vice is where I first heard this Song. His performance of this song at this concert on this particular night is a once in an life time performance. His Voice.. His Facial Expression...His Slow Walk to the drums and Everytime he sings "O Lord" is perfect! We are so fortunate to be able to see and listen this performance anytime we want to. Great Reaction Guys and Thank You for sharing it with us.
Yep, first episode, it blew my mind, I was 15
You can really see his acting chops too!
I loved in miami vice like anywhere else but was first majorly known for 'Risky Business' with Tom cruise in early 80s
Had to see this reaction again!!❤❤
There is no one that doesn't do the air drums anytime this song comes on
Truth
I just get on my real drums.
Except those people who don't have arms.
Just saying.
I'm pretty sure it's required by law in some places.
Cop: Can you tell me why your car drifted out of lane back there?
You: Sorry, Officer, but "In the Air Tonight" was on the radio.
Including Iron Mike Tyson
They don’t make em like Phil anymore. Immense talent.
Here is a gig most folks don't know about: Phil Collins in the jazz fusion band Brand X

The song was the back drop from the infamous Sex on the Train scene in Risky Business. Tom Cruise Rebecca De mornay.
Highly underrated drummer
@@patrickq7489 Phil Collins is universally acknowledged as one of the greatest drummers in both Rock and Jazz. He is the exact opposite of an underrated drummer, even by people who do not like his music.
Please look up the dictionary definition of the word "underrated".
His son is actually doing a good job of following in his footsteps.
Legend!! I'm soooo happy to see younger generations discover music I grew up with no matter the genre! ❤❤❤
This live version is better than the original
Phil collins certainly does NOT lip sync. 😳 That is all talent.
Don Henley from The Eagles would sit beside Phil on the throne of singing drummers ;)
no don is number 1
Levon Helm from The Band would be on a throne a level higher.
Karen Carpenter would be way up there.
Deen Castronovo is up there, too.
Yeah, but...
Don Henley is a total ass.
Phil Collins is an awesome guy.
What always got me was how he could play those drums so energetically & hold strong w/ a stretching note from singing @ the same time. So fluid & talented!
That's what amazes me about it. Like, singing that live (presumably at the end of the gig too) would be hard anyway, but now do it while swinging both arms in rhythym. People don't factor that in really, your body shape and posture etc affects your voice, singing while drumming is incredibly hard.
Pick a song you know the words to and then try singing along perfectly while pretending to drum along at the same time. Even if you don't know how to drum, just think about how hard that would be to do both flawlessly.
He always sounded perfect in concert! Genesis and Phil Collins were always great in concert! Saw them many times! ❤️
There was no such thing as auto tune, the artist had to be able to bring it. Its called practice and talent. There was no bs back then.
Very true. My first ever live performance was a grammar school graduation gift (13 yrs old). It was the Supreme's just after Diana Ross went solo. Dad whispered to me, don't be upset if they don't sound like the recording or on the radio. At the opening note, I just turned to him and said you got that wrong. They were better than studio. LOL
there absolutely was auto tune when this came out, he was using auto tune and a vocoder for the original recording. the difference is he used it as an effect to highlight certain notes not to tune the whole song.
fun fact Phil Collins and his recording engineer accidentally invented "gated reverb" on this album. the fat drum sound of the 80's
Back then in 2004? There is a backing track that he's singing along to.
And integrity
When Phil was in the studio recording this masterpiece, he didn't like the way the drums sounded on the recording. So his engineers and him together came up with "gated reverb". A new way of recording drums. It's now the industry standard, thanks to THIS SONG
The gated reverb was "discovered" during the recording of Peter Gabriel's third album in 1980. It was a happy accident where Gabriel did something during recording and Collins, who was drumming, made a huge sound. They put that drum sound on the song "Intruder" on the album. This is why Collins knew this sound existed, and he put it in this song. Phil's "Face Value" album was released the next year, I believe.
Do you remember it was first released without drums? I have searched for it and can't find it.
@@christinerobinson9372 I don't think it was ever released without drums. Collins played a recording without drums to Ahmet Ertugun, the head of Atlantic Records at the time. He told Phil to put some kind of percussion from the beginning. Phil told him that the drums come in at about 3 minutes, but Ertugun told him that record buyers won't know that and will lose interest before the big drum moment arrives. Of course he was right and the rest is history.
MJ dirty Diana
I Know but he Played anyway 🤣👍✌️👌🙏🏅
My God what a powerful performance.
I’ve seen him in concern with Genesis and solo since the 80’s and am always amazed at how he commands an audience. This live version of In the Air, always gave me chills.
Phill and his band dont need autotune or lipsinc, there just that good.
"In the air tonight" is probably one of the most iconic songs of the 80s.
It is certainly one of, if not the most iconic drum fills when he comes in, in rock history. Another thing that gets overlooked in this song musically is that even with all of the drumming, there are no cymbal crashes at the end of the fills which makes it very unique and affects the overall feel of the song rhythmically.
My god! Can you imagine playing the drums AND singing with such POWER! 💕
The Eagles.
He’s not lip syncing; he is just a very gifted singer/musician.. In The Air Tonight and other Phil Collins songs were heavily featured in the 1980’s tv series Miami Vice. One More Night is a must for any Phil Collins fan; amazing. You both will love it.
You can tell it's live in part by vocal elements such as the pop on the end of the word "keep"
@@norcalplanner776 There are a lot of little variations he does. Musicians are really good at that whereas singers who only sing often don't know enough to be able to switch things up.
In which he played a role.
.
"Wanker" was one of his lines.
@@michaelharvey1197 I remember that.
He is great but not the GOAT, Levon Helms from The Band, is widely considered by everyone in music as the GOAT of singing drummers. One of the best examples of this is in this live recording from "The Last Waltz" featuring The Staple Singers. Here's a link, check it out, you'll both love it.

I’m so jealous of the people there watching it live!!!!!
I'm out of breath after hearing this. Phil Collins is a master at painting a picture and this puts it to a whole other stratosphere. Wooowww.
Phil Collins Does Not Need No Freaking Lip- Sync Garbage, man Is Just That Damn Good!!
Karen Carpenter also sings and plays the drums.
Amen bro
The bassist with the long white beard playing on stage with him is Leland Sklar, one of the most recognizable maestros of his instrument. He has contributed to over 2,000 albums as a session musician and toured with Collins and several big name bands.
Phil collins is a beast. His voice is better in live.
Fantastic Phil, fantastic fun with Rob Squad!
Phil did not lip sync! He's just a flawless performer, like Peter Gabriel. Just an amazing performer.
My favorite is “Against All Odds”. It’s so beautiful.
Agree
Not a bad tune......seems to have gotten a 'Best Music, Original Song' nomination at the Academy Awards 1985 loosing out to 'I Just Called to Say I Love You' by Stevie Wonder. Nice company to be put with.
"One More Night" is my favorite 💚💙💜
He was a huge advocate of the homeless...."another day in paradise" a beautiful song and video as well as being a hit and is still revelant today
That would be my first suggestion for another song/video from Phil as well.
what an amazing event this had to be....oh to be there. wow!!!
Mr. Collins has a dislocated vertebrae in his neck from when he was playing with Genesis (he even came out sometimes in a wheelchair). Itwas incredibly painful for him to drum by this point, so to do that iconic drop? But he did it even though he had sometimes taped the drumsticks to his hands to keep holding them... Because yes, he's one of the very few drummers who also sings, and he's so badass at it. It's like the gift from god for all of us. He's since had spine surgery for it, but all the spine screws and stuff left him with a foot that goes numb all the time so he can't use his feet to drum anymore and he can barely stand up for a long concert. And he still powered on for so long with those injuries, it's incredible.
And he goes on tour with Genesis next month
Lucky fans who get to go
@@gordonhardwick9552 I have tickets for the 11/15 show in Chicago, plus a second pair I am trying to sell (wife and I bought them at the same time and we using hers as they are better). He is in Chicago 11/15-16 with Genesis and I expect it will be his last tour.

"Sussudio"
"Easy Lover"
"Against All Odds"
"Two Hearts"

Another Day in Paradise 🔥❤️
Another great drummer/singer: Don Henley of The Eagles, Hotel California
Loved seeing this song being played on Miami Vice in the 1980's.
Phil started out as drummer in the band..they lost their lead singer and asked Phil to fill in...rest is history!!!! Awesome!!!!!!
Peter Gabriel quit and a legend was born.
Phil Colins had many hits. ''Another Day In Paradise'' his dedicated to all the Homeless people. This title mean for us who have a roof over our heads, we live in paradise compared to those who are homeless. The official video is very powerful.
Excellent song
"hits" are the worst way to know (or the best way not to know) a genius like Phil Collins
I love his songs. He is great.
You can feel the energy from the crowd-every time a new sound is introduced!$❤❤
That was just beautiful!! NICE!
My dad met Phil Collins in an elevator once in a hotel in the 80's. There was some kinda story out about him at that time that my dad had read or heard on the news and he said something to him about it (don't remember what it was or what my dad said he said to him) and Phil Collins replied to him shrugging his shoulders like "Yeah well.. Shit happens" and just smiled. Seemed like a really cool person my dad said.. Well, that's my secondhand story about Phil Collins. Yes the build up and release on this song is pretty much unmatched for me too. Love it!
Phill Collins was in Genesis before going solo.
Started as the drummer then took over lead vocals when Peter Gabriel left.
And for female friday, check out the cover of this song by In This Moment.
👍
Saw Genesis 2 times and Phil solo twice. Right up there with some of the best Ive seen including David Bowie & The Boss.
and friday follows thuesday
he still deserves the biggest respect for doing what he did.. Thats NOT easy at all..
remember kids, this is 70 s talent.
The amount of concentration it takes to sing and play the drums is mind blowing. And yet, Phil Collins makes it look so easy. He just closes his eyes and the music pours out of him!
Bless You accept this HUMBLE EMOJI 🌟🌹😉
Phil never lips synchs...he is fire!
He considers lip synching an insult
Muscle memory
*I noted that myself. The only other performer I have ever seen do this was Karen Carpenter (another amazing voice). It's damn near impossible according to several of my more musical friends, so it's just one more of a long list of reasons to be really impressed by Phil Collins!*
I can't believe you asked if Phil Collins was "lip syncing" He does not need to do that. Also, it's incredibly difficult to play the drums and sing at the same time. This man is Iconic!! Luv you guys!! ☺️
I learned how hard it was to sing and play drums is hard from a episode of the cartoon show “Arthur” which I watched with my daughter. She’s 24 now.
ONE OF THE BEST OUT THERE. PHIL IS WONDERFUL. WAIT TILL YOU SEE HIM PLAY THE DRUMS. HE IS FANTASTIC
I will NEVER get tired of Jai's reaction when Phil sits down at the drums!!!... & our sweet Amber's reaction too! !😁
He did the entire music for the Disney movie Tarzan it was beautiful
And 'Brother Bear'.....
He went so hard for us on that Tarzan soundtrack.
The sound track is the only reason I watch Tarzan
My kids grew up watching the French version of Tarzan, and Phil Collins did the songs in French! I was so impressed! Usually my kids would lose interest during the songs in Disney movies because they would be in English and they didn’t understand the lyrics.
Some artists had no excuse for not singing the songs for the French versions (looking at you, Celine Dion)
He does put on a great show ….. he can’t play anymore due to complications. His 18 year old Son now plays for him on his live shows and Nicholas can play some drums .

The 1st time a top 40 song was ever used on television, it was this song, and it was the pilot of Miami Vice. The whole world was in shock.
I love it how the audience starts going nuts in the seconds leading up to the big drum drop. It's one of the most recognizable bridges in all of musical history!
He always sings point on!! No lip syncing ever.💖💖😇
I saw him sing this song live in concert in Toronto. I had third row seats and when he did this song, I went by the 10-foot speakers and was about 8 feet away from Phil. Everytime he hit a drum the speakers pumped out the vibration and it felt like a bomb exploded! I will never forget it as long as I live!
Seen him in concert and it was amazing, a true legend.

It's funny, at large events, rallies, conventions, whatever, when this song is playing in the background you'll see people just suddenly in unison do the air drumming when it hits. It's like muscle memory now for people.
Yep 💥 Air drum EVERY time! EVERY time, in public, the mall, pumping gas...😎 Air drum, every time that moment comes💥 always. I can't help it 🤩
