      Hey Elizabeth... I watched this video about back when you first put it out, and so the other day I ran across a very sad news update video on Phil Collins.
      He's now gone from the incredibly capable singer / drummer / stage performer who could sing so well even when being physically active drumming (as you pointed out) to a near wheelchair-bound man who, in his own words, can barely even *hold* a drumstick in his hands, much less hit a drum.
      Evidently he's had some health issues as well as having taken a very nasty fall in his home a few years back, and now has tremendous nerve damage. I gather he can still sing, but he's both functionally and physically now a shell of the man he used to be.
      Very, very sad.

  • @iaincollins5743
    @iaincollins5743 Před 3 lety +5630

    The vocoder was on the backing vocal, controlled by the keyboard player, who's also controlling the 808 hihat line. Obviously the main drum line is held down by the first guy, we designed the performance so Phil could be nice and relaxed and just do the 'solo' part on his kit while preserving the dynamic element of the vocal part.

I agree, that longevity and number of albums doesn't confer "greatness" (one of my favourite artists is Devin Townsend - 25 + albums in a 30 year career yet virtually unknown to the wider public), and there is no comparison between the influence of Genesis and Foo Fighters. My point was that more people today would know Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters, rather than Nirvana. And that they would be surprised to learn that Dave was even in Nirvana.

    When he starts playing drums, watch his eyes. you'll notice that the moment he started playing, his eyes closed. Simply put, he had to start layering the focus he used between the drum and his voice. As someone who played percussion all through school, the concept of singing while playing is ridiculous. The different layers needed just on the drums still amazes me. The fact that he is able to sing while doing that puts him at a level that I cannot understand and still sit in awe even after 40 years.

    I've been playing drums and singing for fifteen or so years and singing and playing drums isn't all *that* hard. Once you've done it for a while, you know that your key words will fall on the downbeat and the answer words will fall on the up beat. Pretty simple, all in all. But what Phil does here is *vastly* more complex than that since he isn't playing a main rhythm line. He's drumming across the toms and almost all of the rhythm he's playing on the toms is on the off beat until he reaches the floor tom, which is where he anchors himself vocally. I've been trying to figure out how to do what he does in this song for about five years and I still can't pull it off. I have a massive amount of respect for the skill it takes for him to do what he does in this song. It's mind-boggling.

PC has been using Drum Machines since the late 70s - this sound is not generated from a keyboard; Collins is a perfectionist in everything he does musically. He was a producer of many albums himself and understands the writing and recording process intimately. He played Fusion Jazz with Brand X; Prog with early Genesis; Sang on numerous other artists' work including John Martyn, Clapton and others. Any sounds heard on this live recording went past Collins' musical intelligence 'quality control checks'.
