  • It is rare for Led Zeppelin to honor an artist to cover their song on such a platform as this. Heart received the honor of covering this iconic song, and with so many celebrities in the crowd, I could imagine the pressure they had to withstand. And their performance was just incredible.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Heart for the first time, performing "Stairway To Heaven” ALSO for the first time!

I love watching an artist appreciate someone else's rendition of their song, or a song written in tribute to them.
There is a band called First Aid Kit, two sisters from Sweden who have some of the most hauntingly beautiful vocals in music. They do a tribute to old country music, yes they are from Sweden, pay homage to the great Carter family, Johnny Cash, Gram Parsons, and of course Emmy Lou Harris in the song Emmy Lou.
I would love to see you do a reaction to First Aid Kit singing their song "Emmy Lou" to Emmy Lou Harris at the Polar Music Prize.

The backstory of this makes it all the better. Heart had been doing this song as part of their live shows for several years, so they were well practiced. And then there's Jason Bonham. An amazing drummer in his own right, he's the son of the late drummer of Zepplin, who the rest of the band have known and played with hundreds of times since he was a child. Wearing his father's favorite hat. That was echoed in the chorus' outfits. The surviving members of the band had asked him to come to the ceremony and sit with them, but he said "sorry, I've got a gig that night", not letting them know he'd be on stage. They thought he was blowing them off. That's what brought the band to tears. In addition to the great performance of course. One of the best/biggest builds in a song ever.

Ann and Nancy are actual fans of Led Zeppelin and were very influenced by them. The way she stays true to every inflection of this song, just as Robert Plant sang it, is the ultimate mark of respect. As great as she is, she knows it's not about her and doesn't do any showboating. It's beautiful.
Also going on here is that Jason, the son of their late drummer John Bonham, is playing the drums. He was such a vital part of the band and their sound, that they refused to go on without him when he tragically died.
I think the combination of Ann's gorgeous tribute and seeing the son of their lost friend was just too much for them, because you can clearly see their emotional reaction. ❤️

I was part of the choir for this show, I'd love to share some behind the scenes details and answer questions!
Jason Bonham being on drums was a surprise that they hid from everyone, including everyone at every rehearsal. At rehearsal, Dave Grohl was the drummer, which we all thought made lots of sense, since Jack Black was doing the introduction, and Dave Grohl was their drummer for Tenacious D's "Tribute", which is ABOUT Stairway to Heaven, and this performance by Heart *is* a tribute to it! Then Jason Bonham came out and we were all shocked, including Led Zeppelin. He was wearing his dad's iconic bowler hat, and so they had all of us main choir members wear a bowler hat too. I still have mine.

The tears in Robert Plant's eyes was him thinking of his best friend John Bonham and seeing his godson playing the drum kit of his father. I mean, there are a multitude of jokes about this song being overplayed, and still it gets me every single time. Add it to Anne's MAJESTIC voice and interpretation... The ENERGY generated by this performance is palpable! I honestly felt the moment the choir comes in like a gust of wind to the face, I swear I backed in my sit as it HIT ME! Plus, for a split second my brain fixated in the lead guitarist, as in... you're playing the solo of Stairway to Heaven IN FRONT of Jimmy Page. No pressure. Tears in Robert Plant's eyes (and mine, frankly). Anne's voice like a Force of Nature. Just fell in love with this song AGAIN... AGAIN. When you think about it, there was absolutely no other choice but Heart for this particular task. Honestly, no other voice but Anne Wilson's could deliver this.

I’m very critical of Zeppelin covers as Zep are my all time favorite but Heart feels the heart of the song. Ann’s delivery is so smooth and strong. Heart gives the energy of the original. Ann Wilson is definitely one of the best female vocalist ever. Listen to some Led Zeppelin because Robert Plant’s voice is like no other and you’ll get lost in it. I hate to point it out, but you made an error in assumption, Elizabeth.
We don't come here JUST to listen to the music. We're here for the triple threat: your fantastically real personality, the unadulterated joy and awe in your Reactions, and the insightful analysis of the techniques of our vocal heroes. 😍🤩

Very true. We could all easily listen to the music elsewhere (and many of us probably do) without the pauses, but seeing the joy in someone's face when listening to something I've heard a million times is wonderful. Such a lovely personality and great insight into the singing too is why I watch and likely many others.

I agree 100% her reactions are amazing. Find someone in your life that emotes the way she does while listening to Geoff Tate.

The sheer joy on her face when listening to music just goes to show how powerful it can be.

I got to see Heart way back during Dog & Butterfly tour in an arena. Ann Wilson’s voice was insanely powerful. I could imagine the walls behind me being ripped down and blown off. Incredible voice. Never heard such a great voice in my life.

I saw them back in the 80's with Cheap Trick at the Garden State Arts center. A friend worked back stage and got us tickets. I'm so glad I did. It was outside and filling the space with sound was no problem for them. It sounded amazing. ❤

I was never a big fan of this song until I saw this! I have no idea how many times I have played this version over and over. Watching you view this for the first time gave me the same thrill I had when I first viewed this great ensemble. Thank you for doing your analysis. After 51 years, I hear this with even fresher ears!

Same here. There are only two songs/performances from Led Zeppelin that I truly love: "The Rover" and this performance of "Stairway...".
