  • Is this going to be a thing? I don't know, I'm still recovering. Every time I say "Wacka" during this analysis of Chris Isaak and Tenacious D both singing "Wicked Game", I take a drink. So if I say, "wacka-wacka-wacka" . . . that's three gulps. What a way to experience some exceptional music!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Chris Isaak for the first time, and Tenacious D again both performing "Wicked Game”.

Even though I was born in 1965. Most of what we had around the house was Elvis records. I wasn't introduced to Roy until a few years later. What an amazing voice he has. I believe Elvis said that Roy had the best voice he'd ever heard. Or at least something similar.

If that’s true, it gives this video so much more gravitas. Instead of just a bit it’s actually a really sweet moment between friends.

That last line "Nobody loves no-one" is actually not a sad statement - it's a double negative! So it's an interesting way of actually saying "everybody loves someone"

Chris Isaak is from my hometown. We were pretty amazed and proud when he achieved success with this song/album. He had the voice, musical talent, movie star looks, and intelligence to make it big time. But in spite of that and some parts in movies, he always remained a pretty down to earth musician who prefers to make music and do small gigs. He's still making music and touring. Respect.

There are a few times in the song where I believe a hear a hard "g" from the backup singers, saying "this girl is only gonna break your heart" and most times it is clearly "this world is only gonna break your heart". The first time through the lyrics, Chris subtly sneaks in the word "don't" as in "no, I don't wanna fall in love", thereafter he clearly sings "no I wanna fall in love", which shows a change in his feelings as he's being drawn in. To me, the entire song is about being drawn in to feeling love for another person when that other person is just stringing you along before dumping you and not caring that they've broken your heart and broken you as well. That's why even when the backup singers ARE singing "this world is only gonna break your heart", I've always taken it to mean that the world she's drawn him into will only break his heart. I've also always thought of the guitar work being symbolic of his situation. He (Chris) is slightly out of tune with the rest of the world because of how he's being manipulated. Of course, that's all opinion. I could be wrong!

@@willpinaI agree that in this song the message was clear. But the idea of the artist or artists leave their art open to interpretation. That's wrong! Bob Dylan for example said himself he'd write lines because the words just sounded good together but they didn't mean anything in particular.
The Beatles I Am The Walrus is another nonsensical song open for interpretation.
That's the beauty of music and art. Just as a painting can be just like a photo or one that you stand in front of with someone else asking "What does it mean to you" and have a completely different pov.
Music can be vague and filled with symbolism or it can be straightforward in it's meaning but to say "Music _rarely_ falls in to this category" is absolutely wrong.
Plus, you're writing is confusing. I'm commenting on what I _think_ you meant which is" But music rarely falls into the the _latter_ category. " Otherwise it looks like you're including both categories which would then be "These categories" and I'm pretty sure you meant "The latter category" .
In any case its not written properly. It's confusing, but I get it I think. I think the positive spin the commenter gives it is fine if it's how he wants to look at it. For all we know it was written with that in mind. It's not such a leap and you don't seem to be an authority on all things music based on that comment so let him think what he likes in my opinion.

Elizabeth, as usual you just blew my mind. I grew up on this song/video along with Elvis (my mom gave me a decade by decade and genre by genre education thank goodness). I had NEVER connected the two of them. Especially when you pointed out his mouth. Unbelievable! Thanks for the endless wealth of vocal knowledge you share, it’s breathtaking and exponentially multiplies my love for music.❤

This song has been covered soooo many times by so many different artists, a testament to its greatness… but the original will always be a classic and favourite. Blue Hotel is another beautiful n brilliant song of his. He definitely deserves greater appreciation and recognition than he has for both his vocal and guitar playing talent

I love this song. The story of this song is interesting. A girl Chris Isaak knew called him for a booty call one night. Before they met he wrote this song (in like 30 minutes) about how he didn't want to fall for her and she wasn't right or good for him. When they met, talking about this song was all he wanted to do. The song is about his conscious choice to not fall in love with her and the wickedness of the temptation.
What's so great about the Tenacious D video is, once you've seen it, you can never un-see it.

What a totally unalloyed joy this was Elizabeth. Firstly, this is an amazing song and to see you fall head-over-heels in love with Chris Isaak's vocals was such a treat.
Then to see you enjoying a beer and getting just slightly tipsy while listening to Tenacious D was delicious.
Then, and this is the clincher, you only went and referenced the Bernouli theorem and as an Engineer who uses this all the time, this was (even more) music to my ears.
All the best from a very happy Yorkshireman x
