"... the sound of the crowd... I feel like everyone was mesmerised right now..."
That was the sound of that entire stadium "holding its breath" (which he milks for the entire time), waiting for that MOMENT, when he starts his drumming. Then the crowd goes wild.
Your reaction was exactly the same as the crowd, and was fun to watch, as I waited for YOUR moment.

He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance Into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is 70 now. His son was on the Domino tour with Genesis recently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).

I was blessed to work at a large concert venue ("Scandinavium", in Gothenburg, Sweden...) in my early 20's - and when it was announced that Phil Collins was coming to town, the tickets sold out in record time.
Watching him (from the very front and center of the arena...) perform this track (as well as others...), and the music literally pulsating through your body, was an experience I'll never forget...
He's an extremely musically talented individual (as well as conscientious to the plight of others...).
No matter what other tracks (of his...) that you guys decide to react to, you can't go wrong!

He was on drums with Peter Gabriel on vocals, he stepped out on his own and Phil moved to front. Then Genesis decided to venture in solo areas, all very successful but it's Phil who blew up. He ruled my 70s, entire 80s into the 90!! Absolutely adore Phil. ❤❤

30 years later that drum fill still gives me goosebumps. Try the gentler side of Phil with "One More Night", and his two heart breakers, "Against All Odds" and "Separate Lives".

Grow up with this song, thats exactly what I did in the 80s when Phil released this banger, during he went through his divorce. I was on Sardinia/Italy, made some Camping Vacation at the Beach near the Sea with my Family. I ve heard this Song on my Ghettoblaster as me (12) and my lil Bro (7) went down a river as the Sun goes down and my body just explodes from the chills i got. Well guys, that Masterpiece now is a timetravel for me and i had the same explosions over my whole body like in those early Years before. Just a stunning timeless Masterpiece!

He's a legend who only "volunteered" to take the role of lead singer when Peter Gabriel (another solo success) left the genesis band. The rest is history. ☺️

@@Dyrtbag68 True, you're right, even if Chester Thompson is the "other" drummer and Daryl Steurmer is playing guitar in Phil's band in this video. Both have been part of the Genesis touring band since the end of the 1970s.

This song was played everywhere, radio and shopping malls and wherever.... felt like I should have been sick of it, at 17 years old. But though I didn't get divorced (which is what this song was about), I went through all the huge changes that most people do, turning 17-18 years old... and this song was always on my mind with huge anticipatory changes. I kind of want to be tired of it and done with it, but this live version reminds me how good it really is.
