Talented? 100m record sales, 8 Grammys, an Oscar, a Golden Globe and many other international awards, yes I'd say he's talented. Oh, and don't forget one of the best drummers and singer/songwriters of his generation. Just throughly awesome
Probably the most famous drum drop in history. If u notice the crowd got really excited the closer he got to the drums, because they knew what was coming. Thank you peace âïž
Have you ever seen videos of the cabinet door challenge? I'm not sure what it's called, but it's a "thing" to video yourself slamming a series of cabinet doors in your home to match the drum drop.

Sadly, you will never see a bad ass like Phil again.. I don't think, he is a legend.
FOR THE RECORD: Phil Collins is 1 of only 3 men who have sold over 100 million albums in a band and then over another 100 million albums in a solo career. The other 2? Paul McCartney...The Beatles and of course Michael Jackson...The Jackson Five. Pretty damn good company to be in....Legends!
I'm not sure Genesis sold that many.
@@FLASHAHOLIC_TV maybe shoulda spent 20 seconds on google before commenting.

Thats some good history drop
Understanding the backstory of the song makes it even more powerful and emotional. He wrote this while angry and confused about a divorce. Watch it again and realize he's angry as he walks slowly for 5 minutes to the drums. Then when he finally gets there, he unleashes his rage and passion on the drums. Powerful.
Ya did'nt add she took him "to the cleaners", cabbage wise, Josef, in the courts.( Mind you, i WAS'NT there, i DID'NT see it with my own two eyes.)
I always felt that there was a very strong emotional event that motivated this song. Whenever I hear it I think back to a time in my life where things were very dark and I could not see a way out. Thankfully there was one for me for which I am still grateful.
Yup. The song is about Phil catching his wife cheating and the emotions of seeing the guy she had an affair with. I always like to think Phil hits the drums like he would hit the guys face.
Drums 3:41, measure 40, the sheet music is on the internet
No! He saw a man let another drown!!.
Kidding
Phil set the bar so high ...it's UN-REACHABLE!!!!!
"Older" generation singers and performers didn't need to jump around to get the crowd pumped up...they let their singing and instrument playing do all the talking! I miss those days!
Even after 40 years I still get goose bumps at the drop.
@Rick Cooper Even when you know it's coming. đ
The hair on my scalp and down my neck stands up every time he hits the âha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha haaaaaaaaaâ

@@susankovach8105 its not. It was written after He caught His wife cheating on him after He came Back From a Tour
@@LWeber-yw6zb Phil doesnât even know what this song is about, itâs just pure emotion. Your correct tho he wrote it in his spare bedroom after he split with his wife.
@@Eonednb I suppose it's that the song isn't based on his specific experience, it's influenced by it. A song doesn't always need to be a narration of a life event, it can just be a broader venting of frustration etc.
Also, Van Halen Youâre No Good.
Fun fact. Phil was the drummer when it was the band Genesis and the lead singer was Peter Gabriel. Phil is hands down one of the best singers/songwriters/musician and drummers.
It's just so sad that Phil Collins can no longer physically play the drums. One of the biggest artists of the eighties for very good reason. This song, in particular, will never get old if for no other reason than the drop.
How's is his health at the moment?
Yes it is but his son Nic does an awesome job picking up where his Dad had to stop due to health problems.

Lex is one of the sweetest things you will see on the internet! :)
Phil was a drummer first, vocalist second. For years, he did backing vocals in Genesis while Peter Gabriel sang lead.
After Gabriel left and Phil discovered he couldn't sing the entire show behind his drum kit, they hired other drummers for touring, but he always still did some drums. (Until age changed that, as noted before).
Phil has his son, Nic playing the drums as Phil and other 2 original members of Genesis returned for their final tour.
Still, Phil was an outstanding drummer! One of the best of his time
There is another iconic band with a singer is also a drummer. Don Henley of the Eagles.
@@MrTech226 his other son, Simon Collins, is the great musician in the family. Check out his drums and singing in his band Sound of Contact. Listen to the song Möbius Slip, it's better than the crap his dad put out in the 80s, and up to par with what his dad did in the 70s.
Is that still Chester with him?
The 80s was the decade of passion from the heart. The current young generation knows nothing of this.
Phil Collins is not just a singer and drummer. He plays almost every instrument known
Phil Collins. Played Live aid in Wembley stadium, London, in 1985, then took Concorde and played Live aid Phillidelphia on the same day. Amazing feat! A record that won`t be beaten
Yeah, the future will never, ever find a way to travel faster than a Concorde. Ever. Simon said it. :P
Then flew back in Concord to join everyone else ar Wembley in stage for a mass rendition of the original band aid do they know its Christmas song
I remember that!. Such an amazing performance.
That Live Aid performance including sitting in on drums for the first Led Zeppelin reunion. That was a huge deal in 83.
@@beelzebob23 It was 1985, but yes, it was a huge deal.
Probably the most famous drum drop in pop history. Great song and, as good as the original is, there are features of this live version i just adore: the atmospheric build up, the more prominent guitar part etc
I saw this for the first time a few days ago and I actually prefer it to the original. Plus, the timing to reach the drums at the exact point he needed to is amazing.
@@garykidson4489 exactly. The original is good. I always love it as it was the first version I heard and it is that familiar, nostalgic feeling, but this live version just hits differently. It is next level.

I saw Phil and his original Group: Genesis play their FIRST EVER TOP OF THE BILL IN LONDON in 1972 !!!! 49 years ago :)
It was @ " The Croydon Greyhound" Pub/Club with 3,000 others when the original Band "Bell 'n Arc" disbanded the day before the Concert :)

The drummer becomes the main singer, he was waiting for this moment, Phil is a GOD.
He was 1st a drummer and one if not the Best Drummer ever ! This is one of the most know drum drops ever. .
He wrote this song about a deeply painful divorce he'd been through. You can see the agony and anger in his eyes, on his face, and hear it in his voice.
Phil Collins is a true musical genius- he's a gift.
Phil is a national treasure when it comes to music.
It was a very dramatic piece indeed, derived from the events that led to a divorce. I think in order to deliver the song with what he feels is the proper intensity, he has to revisit those painful memories. The entire song is a confrontation. What's being felt in the air is the rising tension leading up to that confrontation.
You are đŻ% correct. A very contentious divorce, thatâs where the intensity of his anger grows as the song progresses. I listen to the song almost daily and will continue as long as I have control of my faculties. Mike
I felt this feel shoved in my face and in front of my children for 5 months. I'll never believe women have any virtue whatsoever. They all are scavengers.
i feel it can apply to tension involving any bad scenario this song has transcended and just reaches people everywhere.
"I Feel Like This Is The Sort Of Song That In Movies They'd Play During Sex Scenes"
In truth, Lex, when Phil Collins wrote this song, he was in the midst of a really nasty divorce and this song was a way of getting out the pent up emotions he was having at the time
first thing I thought of when she said that...
đ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
âIâm cumming in the air tonight!!!â
Also he wrote âI Donât Care Anymoreâ during this time too which has the same energy.
@@madmitch3365 I honestly wouldn't be surprised if that song had appeared on the same album as "In The Air Tonight"
@@karlsmith2570 You know, I never thought of that. This song was on his first album and the other one on the second.
EDIT: He may didnât want two âdarkâ songs on one album so he saved IDCA for the second.
Leland Sklar on bass. A legend in his own right.... the dude with the white beard shown momentarily.
Leland has his own CZcams channel. Leland talks about those tours with Phil. He even jams bass along with those iconic songs like this one.
I love Leland. He's a legend. And don't forget about Chester Thompson. The guy played with Zappa/
Phil Collins was originally the drummer for Genesis. Whe the lead singer Peter Gabriel left the group to pursue a solo career, they held auditions for lead singer. After several months of failing to find anyone the found satisfactory, Collins said I can do better than those people. He stepped up and became their lead singer. As I understand it he was never overly comfortable singing as he preferred, at least initially, being in the background
Autotune has no passion.
And this is what classic rock musicians of the 70s and 80s could do kiddies thats why itsCLASSIC
Phil Collins really is a musical genius, even when he lost his hearing for a while, he kept his solo career going and helped other musicians that were just getting started.
Has Phil now stopped touring, was due to be last year into this but Covid messed plans up.
Phil Collins is a criminally underrated drummer. He was the drummer for Genesis when Peter Gabriel was the singer / front man. Phil Collins also played drums in a band called Brand X where he shows just how good he is on drums.
He is recognized as a brilliant drummer and has been literally for decades by real musicians. (Maybe not the Jonas Brothers/ Taylor Swift/Madonna crowd )
I think he's quite highly rated.
Wdym underrated?
He's the one guy who had the biggest influence on 80s music - he invented gated reverb, that iconic 80s sound.
@@3DJapanI don't think the average fan knows how exceptional of a drummer he is.
@@markallen2984 yeah, my thoughts are that the average fan doesn't know how skilled he is. One of my favorite bands is King's X. Great band and musicians love em and praise them all the time but they don't have a huge fan base.

Phil is a legend. Period. â€
My dad played music for a living, and he was a drummer. I never could understand how he sang and played the drums at the same time. Takes a lot of coordination.

Peter Criss of Kiss sang quite a few tunes.

one of the greatest of all time phil collins
He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance Into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is 70 now. His son is on the Domino tour with Genesis currently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).
The most powerful build up song in the whole history!!! You really can feel it in the air
