The song is literally about his early experience on the road as a musician. The lines "as we walk into the restaurant all strung out from the road, you can feel the eyes upon you...is that a woman or a man?" was the inspiration. The band stopped at a restaurant in a small town, late for food and being long-haired rockers, they were discriminated against and practically refused service. So as soon as they got back on the bus, Bob wrote this song about the experience. When his career started, long hair on men was seen as a hippie or unwelcome, a troublemaker.
Interesting how younger people don't seem to get the stuff about long hair and the response it produced in some people back in the day. I certainly remember it well.
This is the greatest, most personal song ever written about being a "star" on tour with a band. Generations of "stars" have said it...not just my opinion.
Anyone who is a musician or in a band can relate to this song so easily about the grind it is being on the road going from place to place.
I’m not a musician and I always thought that I could relate to this.
Definitely the most personal one, but my favorite "road/tour song is wasted years.
It's really popular with truckers as well, for obvious reasons.
Great song, of course, but there's also Jackson Brown's "The Loadout/Stay. Right?
It’s amazing that this is live. His voice is so smooth and chill. What a legend.
Never forget this is a LIVE recording...pure talent
Wow! I've never seen Brad lean back into the couch while listening to a song! Must've had that same chill vibe that comes with this song.
I thought the very same thing! He actually showed a little emotion with this song!
I was thinking the same thing!
Haha I thought this too.. cool
The lean indicated all I need to know. It was hitting a vibe, and I have felt it many times.
What the f*** Brad never seen you kick back and just take in a song like this, awesome not only do you hear his lyrics you feel them
Brad likes chill songs
Thought the same thing. It's nice to see Brad relax and just let the music wash over him like that.
Lol thought the exact same thing!
Yeah, I also liked Brad's interpretation of it. It could well be at the ending, the last page of the Star's book looking back at it all.
Good point. He's always up in it focusing
BOB ROCKS!!!! - remember - this is a LIVE performance - just raw talent - WOW!!!
My favorite artist of ALL TIME, this song will never be the same, his sax player passed away last yr, Best concert EVER, you need to listen to Come to papa.He is totally not done. Seen him 2 yrs ago!!! He puts on a awesome concert.
A true masterpiece, a timeless classic!!
The song was written in the '70's,when his career was beginning. It's not about retirement.I thing "Turn the page" is referring to life on the road.Like,on to another town, turn the page.
This song was released in '73 ~ Bob hit the Detroit music scene in '61 fronting a three-piece band called the Decibels, so it was not the beginning of his career ~ However, it was before he made a breakthrough to mainstream airplay which was '76 with his Live Bullet and Night Moves albums ~ Bob had been slugging around regionally, gigging nearly 300 nights/year out of beat up station wagons and vans for 12 years ~ He had very loyal, devoted regional fans and would play to 100 people at a dive bar one night and then to 80,000 at the Pontiac Silverdome the next night ~ He got the nickname "Road Warrior" and "Legend of Live" ~ After 12 years of slugging and not yet making the big-time, that's what this song is about......
That's how I've always thought about it. Turn the page onto the next town.
Yes! Turn the page, but the story is the same.
Exactly! Turn the page into the next day.
@Geo Dio No
Bob Seger was a down to earth song writer. He doesn't try to hype nothing, or show off. He just says it like is. That's why it seems so close and personal. This is Bob telling you his story.
I used to work at a studio in LA with the keyboard player from this band who helped write the song. It was written in the back of a U-Haul before they had really made it, slugging it out in dive bars across the midwest, sleeping in the van, freezing, getting in fights over their long hair, in a time and place where it was a real issue. You can't write, sing or play music like this unless the dues are paid in full up front.
In Brad’s scenario about retirement, it would be the end of a book or maybe a chapter. But in the song, he’s simply turning a page. Page after page. It’s the monotony of being on the road. Same old, same old. The day to day grind. Not a new chapter or new beginning.
I enjoy your channels. May the Lord bless you both!
Spot on!
Bingo!
Hellz Yeah!! Nailed it! 💯👍🤘🙂🎸
A brilliant part of the song is the way the music mirrors what’s happening in the story that lies within the lyrics.
It begins with this loud saxophone riff because he’s on stage. Then, the music turns to this beat that sounds like a tour bus lugging down the highway (“You can listen to the engine moaning out his one note song”). The bass continues throughout the song with the same monotonous notes, reflecting the lyrics.
At the end of the song, the same sax riff from the beginning swells back up because he’s back on stage. His vocals also start belting out the notes near the end because, “There I am, up on the stage!”
We are see him on stage briefly at the beginning, then on the road for the whole song (because that’s what the song is about), and we see him briefly on stage at the end. And, the music accurately reflects this.
They also briefly give us the sax around the 3:14 mark because the lyrics reference, “the music that you play.”
Well executed.
Anyone who's ever been in a band touring will tell you that it doesn't take long for the days to blend into each other, as well as the towns and clubs to the point where it all becomes a blur.
Brad always does the side to side sway This is the very first time I think I have ever seen Brad just sit back into the cushions of the couch, arms out, just chillaxin. 👍
Yeeeessss, and for damn good reason-🙂
Bob Seger one of rocks great storytellers
Only band I had to see 3 time live. Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band
This came out in 1972 and it was early is his amazing music career. His music has been in my life for 50 years, my older siblings played his music a lot. I was 7 when I first heard this done. Bob music is timeless, great songs. His musical Journey is Amazing
Main Street
Ride Like The Wind
Night Moves
We Got Tonight
Accomp’ny Me
Her Strut
Shakedown
Old Time Rock n Roll
Living Inside My Heart
Feel Like A Number
Still The Same
There is a lot more ♥️♥️
Fire Lake
Horizontal Bop
Shame On The Moon and so many others.
Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man is fire. 🔥🔥
Seeing Brad lean back and just have a big ol smirk tells me this is his type of song lol
Lex's instinct for music is so pure and perfect. Best reactions on the internet.
I saw Bob Seger the most times live as I did with David Bowie and Rush. Three completely different bands and sounds but each one riveting to me. Bob is classic Rock all the way. He’s middle America. His raspy accents and his musical ballads and lyrical stories are many. Check out some of his other stuff as well. If you like more intimate lyrics about small town life then this is for you. And oh yeah there’s a perfectly placed saxophone completes the picture. Life on the road as a musician. There’s the fantasy and there is the reality. Hotel rooms, long trips from one venue to another. Back then he had long hair and I can confirm from having long hair how people used to react in a diner on the highway in the 60s and 70s. People said stuff about you loud enough so you could here it. It got tense sometime. You dare not get into a fight because they always had a posse who could jump in at anytime. To me this performance is impeccable. AND ITS LIVE!!! I forgot it was live because the quality of his voice and the band is so perfect you would think this a studio version except for the audience at the end. Wow!!
I heard someone say about him that he sings every song like he may never sing again.
This song was from 1972, performed in 1975, very early in Bob's career. He was talking about being in the moment and the way it made him feel, but because there was little to nothing he could do about certain things, he learned to let it go...."Turn the Page"... get onto the next moment. Hopefully it'll be something better.
I used to play and went a long way. The internet was so far in the background at the time that we didn't think about recording performances much. We did promos or a fan would share bootlegged video recordings, but that was it. There are numerous clips from such things on my channel.
I feel this song because I've lived nearly every moment in it. I never toured on a bus, but I traveled hundreds of miles to do another show, under slept, fatigued, and just determined to put on another good show. And then, somewhere along the way, some jerk would see your long hair and start making comments about "girly men" or the like. Treat you like an idiot. Or white trash. And they don't know... they just THINK they know. We all held jobs to pay for the dream. Full time. Ran our own business and grew our product. Wrote. Recorded. Hired a crew. Started our own label. And still worked full time on an assembly line somewhere. I was a production supervisor and had 11 employees. But people... can be so stupid. it's just life in an imperfect world.
Turn The Page.
Bob is a great song writer. Turn the Page is saying he is turning the page to the next day and its all the same thing when you are on the road all the time. His lyrics paint a picture that you can see with your mind's eye and feel like you were there. He has had many great hits: We've Got Tonight, Night Moves, Still the Same, Against the Wind........just to name a few. The video for Night Moves stars Courtney Cox and Matthew LeBlanc from the TV series " Friends ".
Every performers story. On the road, on stage.
Great react, I always thought turn the page was that he was gonna go through same stuff different day
This song is very evocative. You can really feel what it's like to be a musician!
YES!
It really does, it's almost like we are experiencing a memory from Bob's past!
@@mattyjay8896 We are... He wrote it about some of his experiences touring!
@@chercee Wow... that's really cool. The greats are not only amazing musicians, but awesome story tellers as well!!
Yes. 'Evocative.' It's the perfect word. I love the plaintive wail of the sax at the end.
At 68 if I was stranded on a island for the rest of my life and could only have two songs to listen to it would be Turn the page and Old time rock and roll. I would DIE a happy man.
I'm 35 yrs old I've loved Bob Seger music since i was a teenager. Great uncles and cousins and family friends would play his music
One of my top five songs of all time. We look at musicians and think what a glamorous life they have. Not everything is glamour. Then you turn the page and do it all over again.
Absolutely!! Still have my album and still listen to it. Love love love him!!!
I neverrrr seen Brad kick back into the couch like that, ever ! Love Lexie always smiling to great relaxing tunes. Life on the road, same ole shit, driving 16 hours to the next town, to play the same ole tunes, turn the page.
I thought the same- Brad kicked back and chilled-
Bob's lyrics need no interpretation. Brilliant songwriter, musician and vocalist!
Love this song Turn everything.Mr . Seger ...gers it done
Bob is a great story-teller. His songs tend to open a door into his soul and let you get a brief but personal glimpse into the man.
This song was released in '73 ~ Bob hit the Detroit music scene in '61 fronting a three-piece band called the Decibels, so it was not the beginning of his career ~ However, it was before he made a breakthrough to mainstream airplay which was '76 with his Live Bullet and Night Moves albums ~ Bob had be slugging around regionally, gigging nearly 300 nights/year out of beat up station wagons and vans for 12 years ~ He had very loyal, devoted regional fans and would play to 100 people at a dive bar one night and then to 80,000 at the Pontiac Silverdome the next night ~ He got the nickname "Road Warrior" and "Legend of Live" ~ After 12 years of slugging and not yet making the big-time, that's what this song is about ~ He did not retire until 2019 ~ I saw his show in Pittsburgh two weeks before is final farewell show in Philly ~ From '77 to 2019, I saw him live 13 times, he and the band were that damn good live ~ The man had a 60 year career, 18 studio albums, 2 of the all-time best live albums and a few compilations ~ His vault is vast and deep making for a HUGE rabbit hole to get into......
If you were in the Ann arbor Detroit area and hadent seen Segar you were a bit of an outcast. Lol
Right there with ya! Probably same concerts. If in Detroit, Cobo Hall!!
To me is Segar saying ..tomorrow he'll do it all over again. Turn the page.
Bob Seger is a God here in Detroit. Nobody like him.
I remember being a kid in the 70's and he would throw free concerts down at Lansings riverfront, then a few hours later you would see him buying beer at Quality Dairy. Nobody even crowding him, people would see him at the store and say "Hey Bob."
There’s something about that 70s Detroit sound that makes your hair stand straight up.
Bob Seger is a legend. Any time the world is chaotic and your day was stressful, go in your room, put this song on and just shut your eyes and breathe. Stress dissolves.
I appreciate your love towards my music hope you don’t stop liking my aspirations?
No matter how old I get Seger takes me back where it all started. The best music nothing compares to Seger, Skynyrd, just the old school southern rock.
It's good to see young adults listen and appreciate his music 🎶 🎵
He is from the midwest just like me! Another artist from the midwest is John Mellencamp and both are amazing singers and makes me feel proud to be from the Midwest😊💚
The most amazing thing was this was live. No filters
This song is about Bob Seger singing about how much of a toll the touring has taken on his body and soul. Bob Seger was a biker and he incorporates that into this song. He sings about being jaded by the music industry and the price he pays by touring and thinking if it's worth it. You know how we all get at times in our lives thinking if what we are doing is worth doing anymore. Even if it is something we love. About taking something you love with your soul and turning it into a business ruining it for you because it becomes more of a hassle and less of a joy doing it.
Bob Seger's music is like a soundtrack for my life. In every song he sings I find myself at some point in my life feeling the same way. So much of his music touches you to your core.
I hear that song every day on the radio and I never get tired of it
Brad & Lex, his "Old Time Rock And Roll", "Katmandu" and "Rock and Roll Never Forgets" are next for you!!
"old time rock and roll" and "against the wind" for me.
Don't forget Beautiful Loser
Old Time Rock n Roll is one of the most tired classic rock songs of all time. Yuck.
Bob Seger needs his flowers now before he's not around to get them. Dude is amazing.
Bob Seger has many songs worth a listen. One of the great voices ever. Night Moves, Against the Wind, Hollywood Nights, Like a Rock, Old Time Rock and Roll, Roll Me Away, all worth the time.
I saw him live a bunch of times, including his last ever show in Detroit--his hometown. He was bringing it hard for 50 years. Pick any Bob Seger song, you'll never be disappointed.
He is still touring, what are you talking about
@@MikeVideos327 no he is not. 2019 was the farewell tour.
AMEN
This song came out in 1972. I do believe that cut was from live bullet which was a double album live performance that took place at pine knob .
He is from Michigan and is musical royalty up there.
That concert is legendary . up there with pink Floyd's pulse concert.
He is also in the rock n roll hall of fame.
I'm a huge fan of his
Yeah, this was from Live Bullet, but it was actually recorded at Cobo Hall.
It was at Cobo Hall and my third concert I ever went to. And probably the best I've ever seen. The whole live bullet album is awesome.
@@kevinscheer6267 Ha! My sisters were at it too. I just assumed it was the knob. I forgot about Cobo.
Back when songs created images and told stories.
Bob Seger is one of the best...This song is definitely one of his best of many.
Ever since we learned that Brad is 15% Scottish and 6% Irish his frequent comments about whiskey make a lot more sense to me! 🏴🥃👍
You know this song has something when you see Brad just sit back on the seat and chill. I love the use of horns in this song, so minimal yet so purposeful. I love Bob Seger.
I saw Seger live 5 times in the 70s and 80s. The man was incredible and every show he put on was great. Used to run a 1978 Z-28 Camaro full throttle to him in the Colorado mountains with a blonde beside me!
Came home from army 67-70 no more hair cut's, no more shaving, had a mustache from nam 68 .Was all over the state's had hair half way down my back. Just like he say's walk in, and look at the people looking at U . But being 6' 4 inch at 230 lbs only twice did i hurt someone, So when I hear this sound my mine race's,what a great sound.
This song PERFECTLY sums up what it is like to have a career that involves massive amounts of traveling. Trucking, shipping, plane pilots, military, sales, basically ANYTHING where you must take long trips that tend to "blend into each other" over time.
Turn the page: Wake, shower, eat, sh*t and go through it all (yet again) for the day, eat, sleep. No real difference, nothing really makes a "day memorable", just small "moments of time" that pass without notice until later in life. Memories of no home, no real family connections, no friends to share things with..... Just the long, never-ending road and cycle of daily routines with the occasional "moment".
Been there, done that. Eight miles a minute most of my life.
Some people call that refuge from what is called a "life" today. I know people whom i see like once in 15 years and it usually in Vegas. My next door neighbor is a plot and bought a home but is never there. It was a money move.
Travel Nurse
Musicians write lots of songs about life on the road, and they're usually pretty good. This one is no exception.
Bob Seger was my first rock concert. I saw him at Cobo Arena in Detroit. It had to be around 1976. I remember when Bob and the Silver Bullet Band played this song vividly.
Cobo Arena was a small venue. Maybe seating eight to eleven thousand people. Cobo was the home arena of the Detroit Pistons. My dad took me to many Pistons games at Cobo. I had the pleasure of seeing Bob Lanier, Dave Bing, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul Jabbar all play basketball at Cobo, but my memories revolve around the Seger concert.
The saxophone lick is still one of the most recognizable sounds in rock music. That night the stage was framed by tall speaker stacks that reached all the way up to the third tier. (Tier C as it was known.) Then all of the spotlights focused on top of the stack on stage left. Atop the stack stood saxophone player Alto Reed ripping out the familiar intro to Turn the Page.
Magical night.
Nice story.
When I saw Cristopher Cross a couple of years ago I gained the memory of a night I hope I'll never forget. For him I have to Imagine that playing Sailing for the ten thousandth time was just another day.
Interesting
Iconic! This is a MASSIVE rabbit hole y’all- and Lex, you surely described what Bob has surely felt, as described in the lyrics of this song- “riding in the wide open just looking at the stars.” 👍 I’d like to suggest “Night Moves” and “Her Strut” next- but my gosh, I could sit here and write a list as long as my arm of his hits- lots more whisky & cigar type ones,😁, as well as straight bangers- please don’t stay away from
more of Bob, SOON- all love- 💖💙👍🤘🏼
This is a “all mood” song. It starts off slow and by the end it’s rocking, but no matter where in the song you come in, you can put yourself into the storyline.
Opening with Alto, I dont blame Bob for not wanting to tour without him. R.I.P. ALTO.
Saw him in concert with my boyfriend Mike in 96, i wish i could go back to those days. RIP Mike Hicks, love of my life.
Love Bob Seger, the night moves album was incredible…
Had to chuckle cause when Brad dropped back an put his arms over the couch, that’s exactly how his music makes yah feel… chillllled, lex you nailed it, his voice has to nail it with music so in the background, dude was amazing live!!!
First concert I ever saw was Seger at Pine Knob. Waited in line over night for tickets. Saw him several more times and he never disappoints…great live performer
Seger, one of the best of all time and the sound track to my youth.
I really appreciate your love and support towards my aspirations, how long have you been my fan?
The greatest ballad. Ever.
Live Bullet....this is one of many songs that were epic by Bob Seger from this album. Songs like "Heavy Music", show how he can get the crowd in the palm of his hands and interacting with him.
Thank you Lex, you described this song perfectly as INTIMATE. Seger really puts you in his shoes with the lyrics. Metallica does a good cover, but doesn't feel nearly as INTIMATE.
Hate Metallica cover. Even though Bob likes it.
Bob Seger was and still is one world's most not only America but entire globe a favorite and beck in the day listening to his songs coming out new will be remembered my favorite times.. Song Down on Main Street..gotta listen to ...
guys...do more BOB for sure...his music is pure americana....it is who we are in this country and it was all great..he had endless hits back in the day....do more of him for sure.
guys...metallica did this one..find it..check it out....chris didnt do it..metallica did it.
I met Bob, back in 94 or 5. Me a few coworkers went to Weber's Inn in Ann Arbor and he happened to be there. We talked to him for a good half hour or more and he bought us a round of drinks. Super nice guy
This is the live version off of the Live Bullet album. You should check out the studio version from the Back in 72 album, to me, a much better mix.
Other Bon Seger tunes I would recommend;
Looking Back
Bo Diddley
If I Were a Carpenter
Mongrel Too
Highway Child
Bob Seger's song The Famous Final Scene helped me immensely after my Mom passed. The man's a legend. So many good songs... and Metallica covered this one, guys. ;)
Let’s face it I am blessed! I grew up in some of the best music ever.
Love this man. Seger is one of the best! 🥰🎶🥰🎶
Not only is it an iconic song, but an amazing recording. How live should be done.
Deep lyrics, like poetry.. love this song and the vibe.
Bob Seger almost knocked Lex off the couch! Great reaction.
That was Seger? I thought a mule kicked her!!
😜
Turn the page means he knows he's going to do it again. It's life on the the road.
Nice, Bob is a timeless American Ikon, this a very famous song from his prime. For something else of his try Her Strut, Old Time Rock and Roll and Ramblin',Gamblin' Man .
Also Metallica does a monster cover of Turn the Page. Check it out and ENJOY! 🎶
This was LIVE. .. I don't even know if they even bothered releasing a studio version, because the Live version is so damn good.
there is the studio version but it's one of those songs where the live version trumps the studio version on the radio. Same with Do You Feel Like I Do by Frampton. You only here the live version because they are so awesome.
This song just builds and builds...one of the greatest songs ever.
Bob Seger is a national treasure
You have a lot of catching up to do with Bob Seger, he's a true timeless classic. Also, if you're looking for a modern cover, Lex, look no further than one of your favorites, Metallica. That cover is worth a listen, for sure.
It was Metallica's most successful hit.
Another great song is Hollywood Nights 🌙 ✨️ That song is a totally vibe and is a good driving song 🎵 🚗
@@ChrisSmith-bz1gl most successful cover maybe.
Metallica's cover of this song is amazing as well. And the video, with ex-porn star Ginger Lynn Allen as a travelling stripper, hits pretty hard emotionally as well. I think they're both equal in terms of how much I love them. :)
I've always thought Jon English's version was the best cover of this song.
Now, you're talking! No one can do this song justice like Bob Seger... a true masterpiece is what I saw in the comments and I concur!
My favorite Seeger song !! Lived the diner part , ignorance and Racism !! What a drag !! Great song , thanks for playing it.
The beauty of this song is it's simplicity. No crazy guitar rif or heavy drums. Just lyrics and instruments.
I think Brad likes songs by storytellers. Easier to parse the lyrics. :)
As for turning the page, sometimes when you turn the page it's more of the same, but time is passing. For a touring musician, it's probably like, "Detroit. Done, turn the page. Chicago. Done, turn the page. Philadelphia. Done, turn the page." Etc.
Exactly.
Yep. The story continues.
would love to see them react to Bob Dylan. He is a story-teller extraordinaire, and a Noble Prize winning lyricist.
@@ashlealabine6937 that is one artist I just could not get into.
Oh man, this song is absolutely killer. I forgot how much I love this, since I usually only listen to the Metallica version. This version is SO much better, in my opinion.
Well, Bob wrote it so............
Agreed 💯. To me this is the only song that they covered that is not better than the original.
Though the Metallica video to this was very controversial…love both versions.
I can't stand Metallica's cover. When I hear Alto Reid's sax in the beginning the volume on my radio goes way up. Metallica's cover comes on the channel get changed.
awesome song, look for John English version
Against the wind is another must listen to Seger song.
Bob Seager on of the greatest for sure ever..
This song has a permanent place in my top 5 songs of all time, and Bob Seger is in my top 3 as a performer. Thank you for this reaction! More Bob!
Cool reaction ! You guys might like "ROLL ME AWAY" by Bob Segar, it's another story telling type of song and shows his vocal range. The dude can sing no doubt about it !
Bob Seger is one of the greatest. You can see in your review how his voice just captures you. I would recommend that you give "Roll Me Away" a listen.
You love Bob Seger. His whole life, his whole catalog, is one story after another. There is no better storyteller than Bob Seger. Just spin the wheel, pick a song and enjoy his ear candy...
Bob Seger's ballad, "Up On Main Street" is as beautiful and evocative as a Rock ballad can get. I recommend it for a double-bill with "Avenue A", a Red Rider song written by Tom Cochrane, one of the best songwriters of the 1980s and 90s. It's from the same album as their big hit, "Lunatic Fringe".
That song actually makes me cry every time I hear it. The yearning in his voice as he sings about the “long and lovely dancer” makes me think she must’ve been a real unrequited love for the writer.
Great song. The cover by Metallica gives it a whole different feel while still sounding the same.
Yep, the depressed version vs. the angry version.
Agree, just hate Metallica's video.
Metallica's cover of this song blew me away. Same with my oldest brother.
They did a good job but dont come close Bob Seger
@@jacklynjohnson9359 depends your taste in music. This is very Simon and Garfunkel with more chest, Metallica would get me through a 2 hour work out or 12 hour labour shift. Also covers usually state the original was very inspiring or the artists heard something they can tweak and change to make it their own. Metallica killed it. Including the song in a +30 track album dedicated to all songs that mean alot to the band or inspired them and they covered them all. "Garage Inc" highly recommend especially the song "so what"😏
Bob's one of the best!
Brad, Brad, Brad, when you threw your arms back on the couch you became my dude. Bob is not my favorite artist but on a Friday night, alone, I'll put on Night Moves and travel to my destination whether it's actual or in my mind.
This song pretty quickly became one o my all time favorites, after listened to the original one, because I heard it from Metallica first, I mean what a voice, what a restraint, what a storytelling!
This song is a perfect encapsulation of a story. EXCELLENT songwriting. Love watching you guys enjoy one of my favorites!
Fortunately, Bob Seger is still touring!
I really appreciate your love and support towards my aspirations, how long have you been my fan?
