Ukrainian refugee who lost her husband to the war pleads with lawmakers to pass foreign aid bill

- One of the first people Ali Velshi met on his first trip to Ukraine just after the Russian invasion is Inna Tokareva, an artisan by trade who was forced to flee in 2022 after her hometown near Kyiv had been attacked by Russian soldiers. Like many Ukrainian women, she had to part ways with her husband and son, both of whom serve in the Ukrainian army. This week, Inna received the tragic news that her husband was killed in combat on the frontlines of the war. Today, she’s pleading with American lawmakers to pass a long-stalled foreign aid package that includes $61 billion for Ukraine. ‘I don’t believe that America is a heartless country,’ she tells host Ali Velshi. ‘Please support us.’

Even if the Senate passes the bill Monday and the President signs it is going to be July before the first shipments of any supplies arrive in quantity.

I travelled to Ukraine and arrived in Kyiv May of 2022. On May 29, 2022. I travelled to Irpin, which is not far at all from "city center" of Kyiv, Maiden Square. Matter of fact my CZcams channel has short videos from the suburbs of Kyiv driving toward Irpin. Irpin is immediately adjacent to Bucha. Bucha is immediately north of Irpin. And the town Inna live, Hostomel', is adjacent to and immediately north or Bucha. (There is a road that goes from Hostomel to where the bridge that collapsed and where people crossed the Irpin River on narrow boards to the other side on their way to Kyiv. The last time Inna Tokareva saw her husband was in May of 2022, from what she now says. Traveling and being in refugee centers is discombobulating. Time and space become confusing. Either she returned in May to see her husband and left again or the last time she saw her husband and son was in February of 2022 when she first left and was in Hungry and had talked to the host. She seemed quite certain the last time she saw her husband was in May of 2022. (Maybe the host is confused but it doesn't seem he would admit to this.) I only wish from what I know about Kyiv in May that she had returned to Kyiv and had stayed there. She could have returned to her little town too. The russians were long gone and defeated at least by May 29. When I travelled from L'viv to Kyiv in May the train I was on was full of Ukrainians returning. Life as refugees was to difficult for many. Ukrainians I talked to were retuning to Kyiv and further East. Of course, when I left Kyiv in June, Ukrainians were still leaving to go to Poland too. Since May and June of 2022, I've been to Ukraine in July of 2023 and in January of 2024. I have written since Secs. Blinken and Austin asked for the emergency supplemental aid for Ukraine in October of 2023, that another huge flight of Ukrainians was likely to occur again. We are lucky that the Ukrainian central command is intelligent and the Ukrainian soldier is highly dedicated to killing russians in defending their land. When I was 10 miles from Bakhmut on July 11, 2023, I warned a surgeon whose hospital was struck by russian missile to be careful with their soldiers. Later, I learned that too many Ukrainian soldiers died in Bakhmut, but the so many russians were destroyed there as a result. I had also warned a military official in a short and informal meeting at the state administration that the United States had basically sabotaged the counter offence by not providing Ukriaine with the right weapons for the counter offense. Save your men and armor for the right time. I can only hope that between Germany and other important European countries, along with the $61 Billion this time. Ukraine will have the necessary arms to get the job done. I had also determined that Ukraine needed more men who were trained. i.e. more brigades. It looks like the mobilization of what I understand is another 100,000 by lower the age will get more brigades created. I haven't proofread this comment so I would assume the reader knows enough how to interpret the thrust of what I mean. I'm leaving for Ukraine for the fourth time in a couple months and I hope to either perform the disabling of land mines or evacuating soldiers from the front. A soldier with a tourniquet must be evacuated in 2 hours to save the limb. It has been reported it takes 3 to 4 days to get this done. I find this unacceptable. More volunteers are needed. But if Inna had returned in May of 2022 she should have stayed, and she likely could have seen both her husband and son a few times before the death of her husband just recently. But people are delicate and not all are sturdy enough for missiles continuing to target Kyiv. There is more to this story that goes unexplained. Slava Ukraine!
