  • @ebbandfloatzel
    @ebbandfloatzel Před 2 lety +91

    Funnily enough, this is all because of how efficient Demonic Consultation is as a combo piece and how absurdly busted the 0 cost mana rocks are. Like genuinely, 0 mana rocks kinda break open games for people. Ad Nauss is also just strictly one of the best draw spells in the entire game the higher your power level is, since you'll be running 0-3 mana spells as a much higher majority to get your fuel burning.
    As a word of warning, do make sure your playgroup wants to play this way. Stuffing hyper efficient two card combos like Consultation Thoraccle into your deck leads to more anti-climactic games if the table isn't built around engaging with the stack in meaningful ways. Just shoving a combo like that onto the stack and hoping it resolves isn't always going to be fun for you or the table. Whereas playing a essentially a cold war game with interaction like counterspells and cantrips fits this style of play more.

    • @johanhi2
      @johanhi2 Před 2 lety +2

      To be fair you can create a similar start with "Oona, Queen of the fae" in the command zone and fish for "isochron Scepter" and "dramatic reversal". Than Oona exiles everybody's decks. Its not just a problem with thassaconsult. The 0 cost mana rocks are the real culprit for such a fast win.

    • @ebbandfloatzel
      @ebbandfloatzel Před 2 lety +2

      @@johanhi2 but that's what I said. Consultation just happens to be hyper efficient, allowing this to be much less strict as well. Granted dramatic scepter is the same mana value as shown in the video, Thoracle is 1 cheaper for the same effect. Meaning you only need to dig down with ad nauss for one rock instead of two.

    It does allow the opponent to draw their entire deck, but it also lets you draw and use any counter spells if they try to force of will or lightning bolt kill your plan. Plus, it can be mono blue now instead! Also takes the perfect 7 card hand though.

    Another way to win with the 6 mana is a bolas Citadel and have a pile of top deck tutors in your deck and get lucky.

    The other perfect starting hand for this would be Leyline, mana crypt, sol ring, mox opal, dimir signet, oracle, and consultation. Getting this hand would be pretty dang lucky though lol

    Thoracle is actually MUCH better than the other deck out win cards, because it checks as an etb trigger, and checks for >= devotion. This means that you can cast Thoracle, let priorities pass, and if it resolves, you can demonic consultation on the stack, on top of the Thoracle etb trigger.
    Because Thoracle wins on devotion = 0, if your deck has no cards, kill spells and removal don't work, unlike with lab man and Jace. This means that the only way to stop this combo is through a counterspell. However, even then it isn't always clear what to counter. If the Thoracle is countered for example, you never had to reveal that you had a forbidden tutor in the first place. If the forbidden tutor is countered, in the worst case Thoracle still gets small value, in the best case you had another one to play.

    this deck is called "go home", because if you played this combo and won first turn like that, everyone at the table would tell you to go home. And the combo is so specific and so difficult to pull off in "competitive" commander that no one would bother as you'd almost never win due to how difficult the combo would be to pull off consistently enough to win most of the time.

    Using Jace instead of lab man isn't a turn 0 win anymore, though, because you would have to wait until the first main phase to activate his +1 so you would already win in your draw step instead.
