So glad to see some of the Star Wars Old Republic animations be talked about. Those animations are so darn good, and are great examples of what Modern Star wars could be. Hope to see an episode dedicated to those trailers cause the animation and choreography is top notch.

Now that unreal engine 5 is out, I want to see a star wars game where the characters and cutscenes look as good as the Old Republic cinematics the entire time. If you've seen the matrix demo you know it can be done.

13:03 I love the contrast between Maul, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan turns on his lightsaber seconds before the shields open, and Qui-Gon opens his eyes the moment they open. They get ready for battle at different moments, and then there's Maul, that's ready for battle the entire time. It really talks to you about the characters and their approach to combat, the Force and life.
Kind of wish they went into the final Obi Mail fight in Rebels for me it was the perfect fight taking into account there past it has echos of this to the point of Obi using Quin hon stance
@@wolf99000 The obi wan v maul fight in rebels was done so perfectly. 3 moves and it's done, you can tell they were both thinking of this moment nonstop for the past 19 years

@@wolf99000 Obi-Wan's stance before Maul attacks is the same one he used when fighting Grievous.
@@TheBrickGuy7939 It was initially, but he changes it to the form IV stance he and Qui-Gon used in TPM, which baits Maul into attacking the same way he did back then and attempt to smash Kenobi's head with the hilt like he did to Qui-Gon. Kenobi predicts this and cuts straight through him and ends it immediately.
Would anyone be interested in seeing a SOUND designers react series? Maybe I’m the only one but I’d love to see a series break down all the cool sound sources they use for film/games.
A couple that spring to mind are burying microphones for the thumpers in Dune, or recording smashed fruit for the gross fatality sounds in Mortal Kombat.

@@Donklopfen great suggestion! Star Wars in general would be a goldmine of interesting sound design. Like the “vroom” sound of the lightsaber, or the original x-wing blaster sound
They should bring in Stefan from Oddio Studio! He's a great foley artist and loves interacting with his audience online. He would be a great fit for them to bring in!

100% - I remember a little video hype clip from some game ages ago where the sound designer showed in Logic how he'd layered multiple sounds, and as he added each sound you could see how it was contributing to the final "oomph" of the sound.

When talking about a fast-paced Star Wars fight in the movies, the Obi-Wan / Anakin fight must be mentioned. These two practiced their choreography for several months and it showed in its fast pace.
yep they actually had to slow down few parts because it would just be too quick for the audience to follow XD

What's funny is that Attack of the Clones & Revenge of the Sith used to get criticized by many fans for supposedly making the duels look like twirling dances instead of being in the same tradition as the original trilogy.
Yeah I think it was explained back in the old days pre-Disney, when there were levels of canon (Like A, B, C starting with films). IIRC The style Darth Vader used was slower, efficient and powerful due to the limits of his cybernetics, and Luke used the same style just less experienced. That's how it was justified that prequels were faster and with more flair. Movie wise it was the limitations of production because they were fighting with expensive glass tubes and the sequels switched to wood.
@@Contradae Lucas' canon explanation in the DVD commentaries is that the Vader vs Obi-Wan rematch wasn't complex b/c it's basically a robotic cripple vs an old man. Which is quite amusing given the Yoda vs Palpatine duel.

I do think that Attack of the clones and revenge of the sith are too much.. The fights often look like dances rather than fights. Episode 1 absolutely has a ton of dance quality to it, but it still looks like they're actually trying to kill eachother, I think that's the difference between the maul fight and many of the later ones.
Yep. Sequels used to be hated, no loved. Prequels will go the same way.
The “shake off the dust shot“ in the original matrix is one of my favorite shots in cinema and I’m extremely glad that they geeked over as well.

@Oni It's not that anime 100% can't translate to live-action, but rather that how you direct action inside animation is completely different to how you do it in live-action. That's why it doesn't translate well, especially if the animation goes into sci-fi/fantasy levels of strength. There's advantages and disadvantages to both when it comes to animation vs live-action and it's those differences that stop both from perfectly translate between eachother. And that's not a bad thing, if anything that's a good part of it all, it creates nuance and interesting difference. Both are lovely in their own right.
Like to me, animation will always have the upper hand when it comes to fantasy type action, the type of shots you can get just cannot be recreated in live-action. Imagine trying to recreate Trigger Studio's Promare, Little Witch Academia or Kill La Kill in live-action, those type of shots are literally impossible to pull off. They just wouldn't look good because those shots are created with an animation basis, therefor get to take the advantages of animation. But vice versa, character acting (primarily facial acting) and sense of grounded reality is the huge advantage of live-action, that's something you cannot perfectly recreate in animation. Yes in "theory" you could, but not even Disney has the budget to make that happen, it's too time inefficient and has serious flexibility constraints.
On the opposite end, the facial acting in animation just can't translate to live-action, those hype scenes of the character screaming their lungs out and their face starts to distort. How do you translate that to a live-action scene without it looking like a whacky looney toons space jam cut?
@@dhrunssofast I think they meant that it serves the same purpose as what anime does with showing the energy of the characters radiating from their power moves and poses. The dust isn't just used for the same purposes as what martial arts typically does, which is just adding emphasis to a kick to the face or something, although it's in the same vein and uses the same special effects technique. The point was to highlight Neo's energy in that pose, which is what anime does with the background when the characters pose like that. It was a live action technique borrowed from martial arts movies, used for an effect that is typical of anime. That's part of what's so great about the Matrix. It was an amazing blending of genres.
Seriously, it's up there with Henry Cavill reloading his biceps for me lol
The Darth Maul fight scene is even more impressive when you learn that they actually had to slow it down because unedited it looked unrealistic and like it was sped up.
Tbf, that's what needed to be done for most old martial art movies.
@@passbyicecube Really? Isn’t it funny that the real speed of these things need to be altered to look “real”. Still though, I know a lot of people have a lot of reverence for old martial arts work (I’ve not watched much of this myself, but I get the sense from others that it’s on a whole other level) so I’m going to say I’m still pretty impressed.
Same with Anakin Vs Obi Wan, they knew the choreography so well they moved too fast that they slowed it down so that we could make sense of it
Exactly, that is what a lightsaber fight should be like. That blew my mind when I found that out
@@miltondts It reminds me of an old Bruce Lee training video. At normal speed it looks like he throws one punch. But it looked weird to me and my mate. So we played it frame by frame and saw he threw three punches in that movement that looked like one weird one.
The last time a Lightsaber fight got everyone excited was the hallway scene in rogue one. Yea it was fan service but thats the point. Its ok to show a badass being a badass. Thats where the sequels fell short. No one felt deserving to be an all powerful force user.
Do people still remember the times when Star Wars was about Jedi not using their light sabres? Yoda ridiculed them as stupid nonsense a true Jedi does not identify with. And wow, the emperor was slain because Luke threw his light sabre away.
That is why the light sabre fights in the OT could look clunky. Because the fights had meaning to the story they did not need to be flashy.
What about Mandalorian?
"The problem with so many cuts is you lose the audience." Absolutely true for me. I really don't like rapid cuts, because it tells me one or two things: there isn't enough talent to do single- (or minimal-) take perspectives and/or they're overcompensating for lack of budget. Hypercuts can add some tension, sometimes, but using it for every action scene just makes the scenes fractured, which is not enjoyable for me.
It’s so good to hear people praising the way lightsaber fights were done in the prequels, especially episode 1. They’re Jedi in their prime and sith in their prime so of course it’s going to be fast and highly technical.
Agreed sure out of context it looks way too fast, but in the lore you know these are masters at work!

I'm like sure... as if you know how sword fighting with super powered people who has "force guiding you" would look like
that's the point Jedis and Siths during those times were at their peek, using the force to help them move at precise movements with weapons that is a detriment to it's user if not handled correctly all these movements for all we know is to try to make the enemy distracted with all the bright and spinny sword etc...

I don't recall nearly as much hate for the fights as defendants of the ST claim there were (except Anakin V Obiwan, seriously WTF was that baton twirling? Even I chuckled at that ridiculous moment-torn from my suspension of disbelief-in the theatre in my early teens). Most of the complaints I recall from the prequels was that Jar Jar was a racist caricature, Anakin was a bad actor (which I didn't understand the complaint, most kid actors aren't that good), and that the dialogue was simply atrocious between Padme and Anakin (which it is, clearly because Lucas cannot write with a focus on romance).
I guess the other major complaint was that, given it was a prequel, technology seemed to have devolved between the PT and OT based on ship design but that was because CG had evolved in the real world.
Admittedly, none of these complaints detract from the prequel trilogy feeling like a prequel to Star Wars. It didn't excessively breaky any world defining lore. It accounted for Anakin's training by the time skip between Phantom Menace and Clones. It showed Anakin's descent to the dark side (admittedly it was done better in Clone Wars the animated series). Anakin could only do intuitive 'feeling' force stuff with pod racing/space fights (like Luke's targeting) before he could do anything cool with the force. The force couldn't materialize matter across spacetime or heal others. Jedi didn't just willy-nilly abandon that way of life because they made a single mistake or I guess two mistakes because once Kylo went on a killing spree I guess Luke just... let him do it? Instead they taught and tried to learn from mistakes. You couldn't just skip from one side of the galaxy to the entire opposite side in a matter of seconds (it took around a week to get from Tattooine to Alderaan, and they aren't even half the distance some of the places were in Rise). Not only that, but you didn't have lightspeed ramming... which IS NOT a probability/chance maneuver when you have targeting/navigation computers to make sure you're pointed in the right direction. You're gonna be going the speed of light, nothing is dodging you at that speed that isn't ALSO going the speed of light. You will hit them at the same time their sensors detect you coming even from light years away.
There are so many lore breaking issues with the Last Jedi, I still haven't even bothered to watch Rise of Skywalker and never will. Looking back at Force Awakens-an entirely, beat for beat redundant episode in the saga with its own lore breaking issues... it really isn't any good either and really didn't deserve me giving TLJ a chance. Solo was a masterpiece-comedic droid riot and all-compared to any of the sequel trilogy.
It's so refreshing to see professionals give love to the Prequels. I know it happens, but it's still nice to see.
Agreed the prequels have their flaws but how can you deny their achievements
One thing they could take out of the prequels and they wouldn't have to do any reshoots is any references to midi-clorians. Besides describing how powerful Anakin was it didn't play much of a role in anything. It would've been best to leave The Force mysterious
I'm so glad to see Blur Studios finally getting some love. You guys could honestly do an entire episode on all the stuff they've done. From Halo to DeadPool to StarWars. I would kill to an episode dedicated to their work.
Honestly cathartic to see them talking about the difference between the recent star war movies compared to the old republic (or hell even the prequel) in term of a lightsaber fight. I had my expectation set a lot higher in regard to the action thanks to those trailers. At least fallen order kind of scratched that itch in term of being weighty but fast even if it's a video game.
It has been a long time since I seen the phantom menace and I forgot how good the visual storytelling is on the characters especially on the maul fight.

The greatest thing about the Maul fight is how much it tells you about the characters. Maul pacing like a predator and Qui-Gon going into meditation to connect to the force even more
The build up and anticipation is intense!
Especially the shot of Obi-Wan’s face right before the fatal blow…it’s like…HE KNOWS.
Also the silence, other then Obi-Wan shouting No there's no dialogue or screaming its just them fighting and Williams incredible score playing over it.
That one moment has more characterization than the entire rest of the film

13:26 I was hoping you guys gonna mention that when Obi-Wan and Maul fight in the series finale, this is the same move Maul tries on Obi-Wan but fails and Obi-Wan is able to counter it. It was such a great detail.

I've never played The Old Republic, but those cinematics are some of the absolute best star wars moments I've ever seen, I just want those animators to make an animated film honestly.
When those cinematics came out, I fully believed they were going to make a Star Wars the old republic movie. I could have died happy then but now I have to keep on waiting.
it WOULD have been great if they had kept the EU and just used animation like they did in TOR to just animate all the EU stuff including the Old Republic stuff. they could have had years worth of content that would have not only made old fans happy but brought in new fans as well. instead they decided to toss it all into the trash and make up their own stories... so now i wouldnt want them to do anything any more, its way too late and what we would end up with would be just as bad as the sequel movies/solo movie or worse.

I loved the Anakin vs Obi-Wan fight too. The fights were great in the prequels. Especially thanks to Ewan and Hayden, the amount of training they did and dedication they had was unmatched

Love the breakdown on Monster Hunters! Excessive cuts always feel off, but I never knew why until y'all pointed out how each one should be used to add information. Makes perfect sense now! Also reminds me of WWE, how they use excessive cuts, shakes, and zooms to "add" impact to the performance - but it has the opposite effect bc the audience can never clearly see any of the pivotal moments in the action.
I realized it's the same writer/director and editor from Resident Evil: The Last Chapter. I couldn't even get through the first five minutes because there were just an excessive amount of shots and cuts to showcase a very simple action.
12:06 The Clone Wars CGI series really refined that prequel era style as the show went on - ironically because its CGI. Not just the speed but just showing them mixing in force abilities subtly in to the choreography.
I would love to see these guys get a chance to do a lightsaber duel, sounds like they already got ideas.

The lightsaber fight between Ahsoka and Maul on Mandalore is quintessential lightsaber combat. The fight was actually motion-captured with the original Darth Maul, Ray Park.
Those Old Republic cinematics are some PEAK Star Wars, in just a few minutes there is so much story and emotion.
Anticipation being better than the pay off describes Star Wars perfectly.
The way Yung Lee said "Star Wars..." at the end with a sigh is how I feel. I want epic lightsaber duels, high stakes, and more Force lore back in Star Wars.
I wish they had proper space battles with fighters and capital ships, a real freakin' WAR.

Dude, that trailer for Old Republic still gives me chills every time I watch it!
We're 44 years into the Star Wars franchise and we've still never seen anyone in big gorgeous cinematic production values actively taking advantage of the fact a lightsaber can turn off and then back on very quickly. Would be an absolutely killer way to end a duel, with a prequel-era Full Wuxia Jedi stuttering their blade to break an opponent's block by flickering past it.
I guess the tactical reason is in a real swordfight, you're blocking a saber because they're trying to hit you, letting it pass through would just get you killed.
Only in movie world where people keep swinging at air will it work.
In live action, no, but in Visions there's someone using the turn on/off technique.

Actually, the guys from The Raid suggested that to JJ Abrams, when he got brought them onboard to The Force Awakens.
But he thought that their suggestions were too violent, so they ended up with just a cameo and not choreographing any of the fights. Iko Uwais revealed in a Men's Health interview a few years ago.

I have a scene suggestion! Daredevil season 3 ep4, there's a remarkably long "oner" sequence and it's just an amazing job by the actor, stunt team and camera. it goes on for like 4 minutes, then has a one take dialogue, and then goes on for like 4 minutes more. It is honestly CRAZY.
The "Old Republic" trailers and scenes are perfect material for CGI breakdown and also "stunt" breakdown, about choreaography of the fights.
When Yung said “guys, Star Wars…” in that disappointing sigh as if he had so much more to say… I felt that to my core. It’s crazy that people IN the industry know that there’s sooo much more that can be impressive with Star Wars yet we get… disappointed. I will say for me though, the last time I was surprised with a lightsaber fight in the movies was when Yoda fought Count Dooku. Finally seeing the master of masters duel it out.
Lately, the only great fight scenes in Star Wars only come from animated series.
Most memorable would be Maul vs Ahsoka and probably the best fight scene of all time, Kenobi 3 strikes vs Maul.
@@araisikewai The interesting thing with the Maul and Ahsoka fight is that it was actually mocapped, you're basically watching a live action duel.
I remember seeing a "behind the scenes" interview where the guy said they needed to avoid making the Yoda fight unintentionally funny, and thinking "well you sure failed at that". Yodas strength was always in his wisdom, not jumping around like a flea on a hot brick.

Just wanted to say episode 3 is what it is but I always enjoyed the fight between Obi-Wan and Anakin was awesome sake with Yoda and Count Dooku hell as kid when I saw Yoda pull out his lightsaber I remember freaking out in theaters
Bet The Old Republic developers took a lot of inspiration from the scene with maul. The Jedi out of combat healing ability is meditation, which causes them to sit and regenerate health, while the sith consular/assassin's ability is Seethe, which causes them to pace back and forth. Always found that a nice touch to the game that many people didn't pick up when I asked about it.

Here's something for you to look into, Corridor. All the car stunts in Blues Brothers. From the drawbridge jump, filmed on the 95th Street bridge, to the car chase through the Dixie Square Mall in Harvey, to the MASSIVE chase at the end, particularly the section taking place in Chicago proper.
That chase required the "importing" of 40 stuntmen specifically. They got permission to do 100+ mph runs through Chicago, and had massive pile-ups of "cop cars". They airdropped a Ford Pinto from 1200 feet, and had to get a FAA certificate to do so. In total, they wrecked more than 100 cars in that movie, and yet, there were no notable injuries.
Chad Stahelski doubling for Keanu Reeves is one of the highlights of The Matrix trilogies. Seeing him evolve from a stunt double/stunt actor/stunt coordinator now to a director is just incredible. He with Jeff Cadiente doubled for the late Brandon Lee for The Crow after his tragic death.
It was really cool to see him in Matrix Resurrections. Playing a replacement for Keanu. Named Chad.

@@alastormedial It was less cool so see the actions scenes though. Easily the worst choreography and camera work out all the Matrix movies.
@@liveac3694 the score disappointed me more than the action tbh. Feel like the action was at least stripped away by design, got no idea why the music was the way it was.
@@alastormedial Yeah, the movie felt like the director siblings were being forced to make it (well, they literally say as much in the movie itself) or a Fan film that got some of the original cast and maybe had 50k dollars to spare for special effects.
Couldn't agree more about the lightsaber fights in the new trilogy. Everyone kept saying it was because Rey was "new to the force and the lightsaber" so it would take a few movies before they could give her the skill and fight that she deserved to have but unfortunately in my opinion that never happened. The speed/intensity of the lightsaber fights in the Prequels was definitely one of the most memorable moments for me as a kid. Watching the Darth Maul fight probably altered the course of my life 😂 Always great seeing Chris and Yung! Till the next one!
Not to mention in the clone wars tv shows we get that same intensity we see in the prequels. Anything less than that looks like a grandma waving a glow stick.

The aniken and obi one fight in the 3rd movie was the best. Just that fight is worth watching the whole movie alone
Man, I love the Ren vs Finn and Rey fight in VII. It's honestly a high point of the whole series IMO. Thought the throne room fight in VIII was pretty impressive the first time too, just sorta fell apart on rewatches.
@@alastormedial they all sucked in the new trilogy..but especially in last Jedi. I hated the throne rooms scene on first watch and everyone after. You see all the stunt people just waiting for the beat, because rey and kylo are so slow

@@lovesiccat im not conflicted at all. i grew up with the prequels i was born in 92 and my 7 year old butt watched the maul fight and the path had been set. i remember my dad was so pumped when he said the they were 3 other ones and we went to walmart and got the vhs box set of the OT. star wars has been the subject of criticism since 1977 and there will always be the "i could've done it better" people. but MY love of stars wars is far stronger that other peoples bitterness and anger.

mace yes but as someone that grew up with people hating the prequels even though I loved them. I understand how the younger audience who loves the sequels feel. I just let them enjoy star wars no matter what star wars they love.

Speaking of lightsaber fights, I'd love to see a reaction to the fight between Maul and Ahsoka Tano from the last season of the Clone Wars. The one where Ray Park comes back and does the mo-caps for Maul.
I'm pretty sure they did! They had the stunt double for Ashoka on and it was sweet!

The sabers slashes in the Anakin vs Obi Wan fight just flows. There is a beauty in a light saber drawing arcs in the air at the right speed.
yeah that fight is really good only issue for me was that it kept going on and on not quite building to anything.

Man,,, the OG Matrix was so amazing. The action scenes + the story added so much to everything that franchise was.
I forgot how smooth the back block was in Star Wars. This show always makes me go back and appreciate movies even more. I love how they cover stunts, animation, CGI, and my personal favorite, camera work. I could not ask a for better, all-inclusive series on film making.
That's actually a technique in Spanish sword fighting. Antonio Banderas said he learned it when he was being trained for The Mask of Zorro. There's an interview with Graham Norton where he was showing the different positions/stances he learned while training for Zorro, and the back block was the final one, designed for when you have a sneaky opponent trying to slash you in the back. These were traditional techniques he was trained in, not just random stuff they invented for the movie, just for the record ;)

In the next episode of "stuntmen react" you should take a look at the amazing stunts of late Jean Paul Belmondo in favour of his memory.
He was quite famous for being one of the first major action stars to perform almost all of his stunts and many of them are really impressive (almost to the point of being ridiculous by today's standards), so I really wish you would react to some of them. Especially since not that many people seem to be aware of his work nowadays outside of France.

Belmondo was awesome but people did their own stunts way before he did, they even talked about it in Stuntmen react (Buster Keaton as example)

I love the prequels exactly for this reason, they made Light Saber fights cool. Revenge of the Sith has some of the best action scenes out of any Star Wars film to this day, the ending fight with Anakin and Obiwan is just so intense. Star Wars the Old Republic continued that trend of making Lightsaber fights amazing, and now... it's back to being boring with the sequels. I hope Disney figures it out, because I want good Star Wars films again, I don't want them to fail.
"They Live" - that movie has stuck with me since I was a kid, it was raw and in your face especially for the time. The brutality of what a pseudo-real fight actually is like.

I hope we get some really good light sabre action in the Ahsoka Tano show. Speaking of Ahsoka, I think one of the best action scene's in Star Wars lore is Episode 9 of the final season of Clone Wars during the siege of Mandalore when she races the commander to the surface from the ship.
I'd actually be interested in seeing a reaction to some of Monty Oum's animations, particularly in the Red vs Blue episodes "Spiral" and "Reunion"
The graphics are a bit dated, but in total they're excellent fight scenes

For the Star Wars clip, when he said that we haven't had our minds blown on lightsaber duels it's true. I haven't been blown away since episode three and then the time after that was just a fan film made by you guys.
Awesome live-action anime fights? THE SNOW FIGHT IN SPEED RACER. I absolutely adore the way the Wachowskis manipulate the snow to create speed lines, giving it a strong manga feel, while still being (kind of) justified visually in-universe.
(The hotel fight could be fun too. "Ninja? More like Non-ja!")
I've just seen the first 6 star wars movies for the first time. I really enjoyed Episodes 2 and 3 for their lightsaber battles. I hope we can get some spin offs with great saber battles some day!
Next, watch The Clone Wars tv show. Some of the animation will look dated. Very dated. But it's some of the best extended universe material out there.

Children of Men was the first time I experienced a "oner". I personally love scenes filmed like that, even with hidden cuts. It immerses me into the story like nothing else. 1917 had amazing long takes as well

I’m so glad to see people in the industry speaking out about the vision of the Monster Hunter movie and how lazy or soulless many video game into film adaptations have been. It’s bad enough when Paul W.S. Anderson turned Resident Evil fans into apologists because of the movies, now he’s setting out to damage ANOTHER Capcom property. If he also does this to Mega Man, I won’t be surprised.
Funny enough, a sizable portion of one of the biggest audiences that these kinds of movies are marketed towards ended up passing on the movie because an off-color Asian joke in the early moments of the movie. Talk about tone-deaf.
It’s also extremely ironic that they show a portion of the cutscene that plays in MH World for the introduction of the same monster that appears in the film, yet the video game shows much more competence in cinematography.
The first Resident Evil is actually quite an iconic film, but the later films were undeniably lazy shitshows.
Chris and Yung are awesome guests! You can tell how much they love the craft and how much they love movies/games in general. I hope they continue to come on every once in a while. Great episode!

From the opening bomb explosion, the car scene, the escape from the farm and the final run through the detainment camp. All brilliantly choreographed and the camera work is still, to this day, one of my favourites!!
