The reason De Niro was so stressed, not even acting, genuinely scared, his car is being driven from the rear seat by a professional. He's just trying to match his movements, whilst keeping his underwear empty.
Nice XD it gave a great effect, the actor at least looks like what the character is living, it sells the scene quite well.
Not rear seat, it was a right hand side drive car where they added a fake steering wheel to the passenger side. Same with the M5.
The thing I actually really love as well IS the mushy gear shift they were ragging on. It honestly gives the chase that little bit of extra stress, because they're not driving sharp modern sports cars, they're driving a mid '80s Beamer and Peugeot. It's just that little thing of 'of course the gears might be a bit hard to find, it's a stressful situation and you're driving normal family cars, not Supras and Skylines'.

You guys should talk about movie scenes that were shot by talented cameramen, like scenes where cameramen had to do crazy stunts to get the shot. I remember seeing a video of a cameraman using roller blades going like 20 mph to get a good motorcycle shot.

The opening chase for Drive is so underrated! Instead of using over the top set pieces, it uses realism and suspense to make it more engaging than most movie chases.

Fun fact: I owned an original Mini that needed much weld (because Mini). I asked the local dudes for a recommendation, they suggested a guy. “Is he good with Minis?” “Have you seen The Italian Job?” My Mini was welded by the guy who worked with Equipe Remy Julienne on the set of the original and never to be equalled The Italian Job. Hell yeah.

the mini,s built for the italian job were built in scotland by fyffe fergusons eagle rally in Johnstone Renfrewshire in Scotland where i served my time before they closed early 90s when fyffe died they built and tuned lots of film and tv cars as well as tuned and built race and rally cars for many famous ppl last tv cars were for tv drama tutti frutti for bbc scotland also some of the team went to italy incase a car needed work during italian job but if you like mini,s we built a spaceframed mini clubman with a v8 mid mounted that belonged to Peter Woodrow of Bridge of Weir id love too know where that went as that car was so fast it scared the crap out me as an apprentice lol Italian job is and always will be one of best car movies just like smokey and the bandit etc when ppl did real stunts in modified cars not use green screen c,g,i like the fast and stupid franchise or the crap remake of gone in 60secs where a heavy old mustang gt jumps over numerous cars in what looks like a half mile jump then lands and drives away lmao car wouldve buckled and bent like a banana and car would have been wrote off at least original elenor had the battle scars for real in original gone in 60 secs cage versions rubbish like when stealing cars as if its that easy to break into and disable alarms trackers immobilisers it may have been easy till early 90s to steal most cars now some are near impossible thats why most car thefts now result in a house being broken into for the keys in my day you used a slim jim steel ruler down doorskin popped the door open jumped in either jiggled ignition or snapped barrel off then start with screwdriver but those days are well over its a shame dont get same class as italian job in this day and age and the remake was bullshit tbh wish films stopped using greenscreen and did proper stunts in real cars but doubt we will ever see again

The other is called an intake manifold. Besides, it doesn't excuse the fact that the freaking floor started to come apart. Like what?
Well typically a rear-exit exhaust set up runs around the transmission tunnel and is technically under the floor boards. If the exhaust was running hot enough and the floor boards weren't insulated well enough, it could have caused some problems. I'm not saying the bolts would shoot out but its not entirely implausible that an issue with the exhaust manifold could translate to floor boards.

@@ruessrolloff2114 I agree with you, but since nitrous forcefully induces in air, shouldn't the first affected place be the intake manifold rather than the exhaust manifold which comes after? Vin Diesel even says something like "You're lucky you didn't blow the welds on your intake with all that nitrous". He is referring to the intake manifold here, clearly, since the exhaust, like you said, is long gone. It is just a little puzzling and I wish they were a little more precise with the dialogue.

Yeah my top 3 picks for guests are Tanner Foust, Rhys Millen, and Jack Gill. All have worked on a ton of things that if you’re a fan of movies with car chases or racing you have definitely seen them in action. Jack Gill did a lot of the jumps for Knight Rider in the 80s, and has a metal plate in his neck because of the compressive force from landing. He’s still working on the newest fast and furious movies. Tanner Foust and Rhys Millen did the Mustang 350z showdown in Tokyo drift, and I heard Han’s FD3S was the slowest during the city chase, which caused problems for the drivers behind it. Rhys Millen I think was responsible for the dukes of hazzard roundabout drift too.
The wiggle on the gear shift in Ronin is necessary. Those old Peugeot gearboxes were very clunky and wouldn’t have downshifted so easily at speed so he probably had to double dip the clutch into neutral and then downshift.
The wiggle when downshifting is completely accurate when driving a Peugeot. It's like stirring soup!!

I love how Dom’s charger does a burnout AND a wheelie at the same time. It’s great watching the behind the scenes where the car consultant was trying to explain that you could only do 1 or the other, not both but the directors ignored him.

@The Beast the tyres will always experience some slip and spin because the coefficient of friction is never equal to 1 but with VHT and hot sticky drag radials you can get a very very high coefficient of friction. You can’t smoke the tyres and do a wheel stand at the same time. You can either wheel stand, or you can smoke the tyres. You can’t have your cake and eat it too, the physics doesn’t work like that. The grip of the tyres on the ground provides the fulcrum, the torque through the axles trying to rotate the wheels against the stationary tyres grip provides the moment of inertia. With enough grip and enough torque, you can lift a front end before the inertia of the car from stationary is overcome and allows forward movement. An object at rest wants to stay at rest so if you can provide enough instantaneous torque around a stationary point of rotation, you can lift the front end. But if you lose sufficient traction, you won’t lift the front end, you’ll just spin up the tyres.
It all depends on which force is greater, the grip of the tires or the force of gravity acting on the front end of the car. In most cases the force of gravity is stronger than the turning moment at the axels but in seriously high powered cars, sometimes it’s the other way around on takeoff.

Also: for those asking about the intake manifold and myself questioning the meaning of "manifold.": it's about the context of the movie. A manifold issue wouldn't make your floorboard fall out.

Yeah I thought that was such a cool scene when I was a kid... then I learned how cars and traction actually work... the amount of torque you would have to kick out to lift the car and do a burnout... ...if you had that much power i'm pretty sure you would break the rear bumper clear off before you actually got the burnout going... beautiful scene really... but not a great representation of how that much power would get put to the ground... also I am pretty sure the supra in this scene was supposed to have much more horsepower than 550, i don't remember though... it would definitely weigh a lot less... but still had crap tires...
Ronin was such a good movie overall. Not just amazing car chases, but an excellent script and acting.
Re: 1972 "exploding" Pintos. The fuel cell was directly behind the drivers side bumper mount. A few things had to happen. 1: the bumper had to be hit hard enough for the mount to pierce the fuel cell, 2: the left hand turn signal wiring had to be sheared, and 3: power had to be going through the wiring at the same time as a fuel vapor cloud was present.
The issue was corrected in the late-year 72 car by rerouting the wiring harness to just under the liftback, but by then bad press had stuck.
Re: Robert DeNiro hunting for the gear on downshift.
on the 1996-1998 Honda accords with the 4 cylinder the shifter was notoriously floppy. All it really took was a soggy torque strut on the front of the engine (Often called a dog-bone motor mount) to make 2nd gear and 4th gear almost lock you out. Reverse wasn't as much an issue as the engine would normally not have any loading on it. The hunting he is doing looking for second I have had to do myself many many times as mentally you know where the gear is, but when you go to grab it the transmission is like "Nope... No again... That's still not it... Oops, that was 4th..."
The "little wiggle" on the gear change is something you'll see older drivers do, because pre-2000s manual transmission cars had a thing called synchromesh that helped the flywheel (I think?) stay at the correct speed for the wheels on the road. Going straight from one gear to another could damage the gearbox, so old bastards like me (I learned to drive in 1992) had it drilled into us to pause at neutral, and to even give the stick a little wiggle to make sure the car was definitely out of gear before proceeding to the next gear. It just shows that De Niro (or his stunt driver) listened to his driving instructor.

I learnt to drive in the early 2000s, my dad taught me - he was a police persuit driver, and he told me the same thing about checking you were out of gear before selecting the new one
the car he was driving looks like a mid 90's car too (I don't think it was new for the year the movie was made, but not too much older, maybe a 91-95, I am not super knowledgeable about BMWs)

There is a more unrealistic thing in this particular chase. If you watch it, there is a moment when BMW and Peugeot do a 90 degree turn at low speed, and when Peugeot is shown the film cuts to inside the car, and later on the two cars are shown doing the same speed. In reality BMW could throttle-turn that corner as shown, but Peugeot would have just stopped without traction because of front wheel drive and lack of limited slip in that model and if you look closely you can see it's about to lose speed completely when the camera cuts.
Speaking of the gear shift, it's also possible this was intended to show he's synchronizing to put in 1st gear while still going, because he would need that to launch the car again after the spin. I did it myself in fwd when doing 180 on rally events. 2 to 1 downshift otherwise causes gearbox damage, because there is no synchro for such downshift.
In RWD it's easier, once you lock the rear wheels with handbrake, you have split second after leaving the handbrake to move selector from 2nd to 1st, and it's just on the way as you're moving your hand back to the steering wheel.
German guy here: Flashing your lights at someone in front of you on the left lane on the Autobahn is absolutely a dick move. Okay... if there is room on the right lane and the guy in front of you stays on the left without reason, it's a matter of opinion whether it's justified or not, but flashing your lights at the guy in front of you is basically like yelling "GTFO!".

Even using your horns is legitimate, although fairly useless considering the range compared to your lights. Stipulations: You have to make sure not to blind other participants and, of course, you have to keep your distance and anticipate other vehicles not complying.
People being annoyed by Lichthupe alone (that is, on the Autobahn) are missing a huge part of their driver's ed lessons and should take a refresher, because signalling your intent to overtake is completely intended as far as traffic code is concerned. People are being dicks for all kinds of reasons, this isn't one of them.

On that Germany fun fact: the flashing lights can be used, but depending on the situation it can definitely be a dock move. If there is no speed limit it’s fine as long as there is space, but if there is a speed limit (yes those exist here) and you are already going faster than that limit and you are still being flashed it’s definitely a dock move. Especially if the drivers then end up just creeping in until you move

But they don't mention that the Mustangs thru 1969 have the top of thhe gas tank as the trunk floor. and 1970 thru 1973 had it in the same position as the Pinto. Many cars had a gas tank behind the rear axle.
Bad stunt? There's a scene in Firestarter where this little girl jumps off a bridge into her dad's arms and its so obviously a 6 foot MAN and they end up just rolling down the bank together and it's so hilarious and then it cuts back to her being a little kid it's amazing

What bothers me is that anyone went to Drive and came away angry that they didn't see a fast and the furious movie. I don't want to be friends with the person that thinks any fast and furious movie is better than Drive.

it’s rocking a very good 7,8 on imdb with more than 500.000 votes, made around 75 mio dollars with 15 mio budget at the box office and surely was sold a lot on dvd and streaming. that movie is a success in every way.

I would have preferred if you could have gotten the driving coordinators from these movies and not just some guy from CZcams. Craig Lieberman has a lot of videos for anyone curious on fast and furious stuff. He explains a lot of the errors and why they happened. Also, the vehicles aren’t purely drag vehicles so they wouldn’t be running slicks and would still do fine in a race. Also if you count up shifts and downshifts in fast and furious the shifting isn’t really too much. They just show multiple cars.
sorry just now seeing this but I'm a mechanic and yeah... I would have been better to have on this show than this dude. No offense to him but having an actual stunt driver or even a race car driver would have been way better.

Yes, Baby Driver, then 6 Underground. Skyfall and Spectre. Blues Brothers through the Mall. The Rock with Sean Connery in a Hummer doing the Bullitt Route. Against all Odds with a Ferrari v Porsche - Stunt coordinator Gary Davis drove the 911, but it was then-70-year-old Cary Loftin who was recruited to drive the Ferrari. Loftin, who designed car stunts for films including Bullitt, The Love Bug, Duel, Vanishing Point and dozens of others, is simply the greatest movie stunt driver of all time. Would be interesting to have these guys comment on these ...

Old dude here, Pintos were excellent vehicles that car racing enthusiasts like you would probably enjoy. The pinto design flaw, the gas tank had a piece metal in front of it that would be struck by the tank when driven into it in a severe wreck, puncturing the tank and igniting it at the same time. It was corrected with a recall that basically put a piece of material between the two that would prevent igniting the tank. I knew the pintos well. Straight factory you could tach out the engine, dump the clutch and it would frigging GO!. You could smoke first and second gear and leave a little rubber on the road hitting 3rd gear. Been there and done that! It was an awesome little 2300 engine and a fast little car. There was no small factory stock car by any manufacturers of the day that would touch it in a drag race. Yes it was the brunt of a lot of jokes and of course with such a tragic design flaw causing some well publicized horrific deaths. I know you guys are young and might not know about the car outside of its early flaw. The pinto was a very good automobile with a bullet proof powerful 4 banger. Too bad Ford made such a tragic mistake in that original design.
Agreed. I met a few pony stock racers who lived the Pinto/Bobcat platform. And that engine was also used in Mustangs, Capris, Thunderbirds, Rangers, and a buttload of other Fords for decades.

The manifold they are refering to is the intake manifold (where air flows into the engine, and also where nitrous is injected) if you boost too much air the intake manifold can break. So some would argue it’s realistic

Also the manifold on a Japanese car is the first part of the exhaust attached to the engine. Sometimes called the collectors or headers in the US, it's the four-branch of pipes that get so incredibly hot (500deg c) that they can glow red when the engines under duress. Brian's car may well have gotten a lot hotter with nitrous being used so it's entirely legit. The floor plate is just trash though

@jetsonik in the US, we call them exhaust manifolds, or headers. Depending on the car, really. I don't know why, but no one I know ever calls them headers if it's below an 8cyl. Strange that you made me think about that. Why do we say headers for old v8s and manifolds for newer or smaller engines?
Ok guys, let me add some clarity. ALL combustion engines (well, almost all) have BOTH an intake manifold and exhaust manifold. The intake manifold is the set of tubes and plenums that feeds air into your engine. The exhaust manifold (aka headers, exhaust headers) is the collection of tubes that feed spent gasses out of the engine and into the exhaust pipe. Nitrous does not cool an engine down. It actually makes it run hotter. It cools down the intake charge (the air inside the intake manifold about to go into the engine) because it is a compressed gas that is being decompressed. It is used in engines because it is an oxidizer. It carries lots of oxygen, which means you can add more fuel, which means more powah baby. This is the same concept as a turbocharger or supercharger. They add air to the engine via compression, which means more fuel can be burned, and more power can be made.
With nitrous, this can be risky business, because most nitrous kits do not just inject nitrous into the intake manifold, they also inject extra gasoline (because again, with the new oxygen from the nitrous, you can, and must, add more fuel). That means that now you have a combustible mixture of oxygen and fuel filling your intake manifold. If you’re at high RPM, the air flow is sufficient to keep all combustion in the chamber, as designed. However, if you start spraying nitrous at too low an RPM, you could blow up your intake manifold. This is because your intake and exhaust valves, the things that seal the combustion chamber, are moving more slowly at low RPM. This means the possibility of some overlap between the combustion event in the cylinder and the intake valve closing is higher. Also, the nitrous/fuel/air mixture backs up (so to speak) in the intake manifold, because air velocity through the engine is much lower, and any spark or flame that may come out of the cylinder through the still open intake valve(s) will ignite the fuel/nitrous mixture in the intake manifold. This can blow the intake manifold to bits, and it’s not uncommon.
All of that being said, the F&F scene is absolutely bogus. 1. The intake manifold has nothing to do with the passenger side floor board, nor is it close to it. 2. A nitrous backfire (the name given to nitrous exploding in the intake) is unpredictable and no computer could warn of such an event. 3. Even if the computer could warn that the conditions were favorable to a nitrous backfire (low RPM, high nitrous volume, large cam overlap), it would warn you fractions of a second beforehand. 4. The nitrous backfire happens, and it basically kills the engine. Once the intake is blown apart, it is no longer sealed, and any method of measuring air intake and fuel metering is gone. The car will die.
Just something about Paris and car chases. The Mission: Impossible - Fallout one was so cool to watch in cinemas, no score, no dialogue, just car/motorbike sounds. Whole audience was dead silent throughout, good thrilling stuff

Lol I think it’s due to the fact that there are multiple different manifolds within a car and it’s completely unclear as to which manifold is in danger, and on top of that, the floorboard of the car then flys off which makes 0 sense…

That charger flip in F&F1 is so iconic. That movie does so much right that it does wrong. Instant classic
GTA 4 actually had a mission called the “Bohan connection” which was inspired by the French connection.
And Driver 1 or 2 had The French Connection mission which is pretty much the same as in the movie.
German here: Yes flashing your lights in the fast lane is a dick move. The reason people move over is because they don't want to die, because they are going 130km/h and the car flashing lights is going 250km/h. Imagine being rear ended by someone doing 120km/h faster than you. Chills.
I think it's universally agreed that flashing your lights in any normal driving situation is a dick move. The ONLY people who flash their lights are always those who are going at unbelievable speeds and their flashing their lights generally to say "GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY WAY OR IMMA SMASH INTO YOU"

it is also illegal. it is only allowed in emergency situations or to warn another driver about anger ahead (eg speed trap ^^). Same here in Austria - it is bullying.
Not sure about Germany, but here the legal way would be to set your left turn signal and hope the person sees it and moves over. - People use the Headlights for Drivers to be recognized.
It is also illegal to be in the left lane, if the right one is free. In Austria this can cost you up to €250 (if only it would be more enforced)

I started driving in Germany in the late 1980’s and the technique I saw back then was the approaching driver turned on his left turn signal to “request” the slower driver move over. I interpreted that as “If there was a lane to my left I would use it to pass you but there isn’t so please move to the right lane.” I haven’t driven in Germany for a few years now so I don’t know if that is still what happens.

In the French Connection they used the sound from the Bullet Mustang for the Pontiac Ventura. You can hear the sound of him "shifting" his automatic. Also the scene where the door on the car is ripped off it wasn't planned, it was a lady who opened her door at the wrong time and it was torn off. They had to pay her off.
I was surprised they didn't talk about Baby Driver, was an interesting movie and would love to hear their opinions it.

I wish you’d have watched the Blues Brothers chase scene. Especially once they get into Chicago. I heard the added some trash like empty cigarette packs on the dash so you can see they really did drive that fast through the streets.

In the original Italian Job they also go through a sewer/drain tunnel. It's one of the highlights of the chase.
German here with some info about flashing lights on the Autobahn: the Lichthupe (lighthonk) is generally considered to be a dick move, and it's usually done by people driving Audis, Mercedes' or BMWs while they are like 20 cm behind your car and you have no way of switching lanes because you are overtaking a row of trucks.
Even here in America, if someone's behind you and flashes their lights (or hi-beams) at you, it is also generally considered a dick move and generally also from the same type of "dicky brand" cars (like Audis, Mercedes, BMWs especially, etc) who are often known to be impatient/overly-aggressive drivers. I also notice a lot of young VW drivers around here who act the same way, usually an 18-20something who has a cheap, slower VW who still thinks they have some amazing racecar driving like an idiot speeding way too fast all the time.

The car chase in Ronin is so dope because its the only car chase in film that, in my opinion, accurately reflects how stressed and anxious you'd be driving on the wrong side of the road. Plus, it's the only car chase ever where they actually flash fullbeams to warn oncoming drivers. Nice little detail
Ronin is my all time favorite movie. The car chase still holds up to me. It shows real cars being controlled by just adrenaline and hope. Not super cars being driven by experts. Don't get me wrong I love F&F and Tokyo Drift is my jam. But Ronin has that actual feeling of something could go wrong at any moment. It also ended super messy which makes it feel far more real.
And let's not forget that there are two chases in that film. I honestly can't decide which one is more intense.
Bourne Identity series and Burn Notice series had some fun vehicle stuff as well, IMHO, but Ronin wasn’t knocked of the podium.

Remember the First Axiom of Drag Racing: There's no replacement for displacement. Tuner dweebs can gush about 'horsepower' all they want but it's a fallacious metric; torque is king. In motorsports, HP = Torque x RPM / 5252; moving the peak torque well above 5252 RPM simply makes an engine seem more powerful than it actually is. Hence, an engine with a measly 200 pounds of torque at 9000 RPM has the same 'horsepower' as one with 600 pounds of torque at 3000 RPM - while the former will use tall gearing to eke out halfway-respectable performance, the latter will glue your eyeballs to the back of your skull.
For the less-technically inclined, *everything* pertaining to acceleration depends upon torque - the more torque you can put to the ground, the quicker your car. Some will argue that the taller gears used by high-RPM tuner engines are 'the great equalizer', but they overlook several important facts:
1 ) Taller gears (not to mention larger wheels with low-profile tires) have significantly greater moment of inertia (sort of the anti-torque; inertia resists changes to speed, and moment of inertia resists changes to rotational speed). Not to mention that friction and heat increase exponentially in relation to RPM. In brief, a tuner car loses far more power to its driveline which means less power actually making it to the ground (through the tires).
2 ) While the torque and horsepower figures usually talked about are *peak* output, racing uses the entire powerband - the torque at the top and bottom ends of a gear are even more important than the peak. Using the two examples above, the tuner engine loses between 25% and 40% of its peak torque at the ends of a given gear while a classic big block has a flatter powerband and only loses 10%-15%. Even with the exact same peak output, the tuner has less output at every other point throughout the powerband.
As to bad car chase/stunt scenes...
~ Gone in 60 Seconds (2000) - as fond as I am of this film, the bridge jump over the ambulance... While I appreciate Memphis having to fight for control following the landing (as well as the Eleanor remaining damaged when he delivers her), the jump itself is hokey as hell; not to mention some fairly atrocious CG.
~ High Ballin' (1978) - a rather lengthy car/semi chase scene beginning at the 35-minute mark including a fireball moment around the 41-minute mark followed shortly after by drifting a corner in a semi.
~ Bubblegum Crisis s01e04: Revenge Road (1988) - not sure if anime is your bag, but I'd love to see professional feedback about the climactic chase scene which takes up nearly the entire third act

§5 StVO states that you can signal your intend to overtake someone with a short sound or lightsignal.
While it is legal to flash the lights it should only be done if strictly necessary (for example if someone is blocking the left lane for no reason whatsoever for an extended period of time).

You can show your intent to overtake someone, but the way they are using it in the movie is to pressure the driver ahead (Fine of 5-10€). Also is can be seen as coercion, which is an offense under criminal law. In this case you can either get a fine or even go to jail for up to 3 years. And of course you loose your driving license.

Flashing your lights on the Autobahn can easily be interpreted as tailgating, which can be punished with up to 3 years jail. If you do it to get the person in front of you to move out of the way, it is by definition tailgating. But even if it weren't illegal, it very much is the biggest dick move you can do, short of crashing into another car on purpose or insurance fraud perhaps.

An american citizen wouldn't get jail time in Germany over violating some traffic rules he would only be fined if caught. It is still a dick move though and only meant for actual emergency situations not to have fun on the autobahn on other people's expense.

@@megapro125 Of course punishment is on a spectrum, but I doubt a foreign national would be treated more kindly, especially if typical traffic violation punishments like removal of driving permits or point systems aren't applicable, if Germanys justice system has no influence on that once they leave for home again. In that case the sentence may even be stricter with fines and eventually jail time.
Yeah I don't know about Germany but in Austria ppl will often drive up close and 'blink' indicate so you move. It's not a nice thing to do tho.
Pretty sure the "gear wiggle" in Ronin is caused by the fact he pulled down the lever and hit the spot between 2 and 4.
Couple of things these guys missed...With Dom's Dodge its impossible for a car to do a Burnout AND a wheelie at the same time. Then the scene pulling the safe, the cars would've never moved, even if they had infinate power and an unbreakable transmission they would'nt have had enough traction to move the safe 1 inch. Enjoyable to watch though
Yeah i had a few problems with his faf opinions to lol im pretty sure no one was getting 1000hp out of 4 cylinders and it was more about the acceleration and turning, the only common 90s import engine taking 1000hp is the supra but even that is more of a modern thing for internet views, no one would ever put 1000hp in a car for street racing
@@thecatthatgotaway check out some modern drag racing builds. Many import guys are running insane boost and getting hp numbers well over 1000 nowadays. Modern materials and tech make a huge difference. At the time the first FnF movie was made though? Yeah 1000hp was insane

One film you needed to react to was "Death Proof".
For that film, they really wanted to go all out on the "classic" filming and chase scenes.
They even went to the effort of keeping the same car used for the chase scenes so the damage was all real!
I cut my teeth on Bullit. To this day it's my favorite and most impressive. The other one that gets me is from "The Dead Pool" with the RC car chasing Clint Eastwood in a full sized car on the hills of San Francisco. FWIW, I had an used Pinto that we called the Bondo-Mobile. It had an A/C you could hang meet in the car with, fantastic Blau Punct sound and all I had to do was replace the transmission to have reverse. I sold it for a few hundred dollars and years later saw it still driving. There was no killing that car.
I'm stoked for you guys to see the chase scene we filmed for, "Free Guy"! Hopefully it comes out this December

Agree to disagree, I consider Drive the worst movie I've ever seen
Stuntman and driver Bud Ekins was the main stunt driver in Bullitt, The French Connection, and The Seven Ups . He and Steve McQueen were friends and MX racing partners. The Bullitt car chase from what I remember took 2ish weeks to film. Both cars suspensions had parts from the manufacturers racing programs. The cars were also heavily inspected every night after filming due to the speeds and abuse they saw.
The French Connection was filmed on a shoestring budget and the director went for a very documentary/Guerilla style of shooting. Many of the extras were cops and the chase scene had no permits. The way they got the in car footage was that the director or DP was in the back seat of the car and gave Ekins the direction of essentially drive as fast as you can. In interviews the director stated that they were going 90+ for most of the sequence. The white car that got nailed was not part of the film and the production company paid the owner of it off as well as repaired the car.
The Seven Ups I don't know as much about but the chase scene is epic as well.
One movie to look at as well for car chase work is Driver. It's another mid 70's crime movie that has ALOT of good stunt work.
Also, the Jump cut @8:50 was (from my understanding) a result of the cameraman getting either injured or killed when the Charger made contact with the parked vehicle. The stunt driver (Bill Hickman) tried to make the sharp turn in the shot as shown, however from what it looked like, he was off on his timing by a few seconds and the Charger's turning radius wasn't the greatest. Keep in mind, Hickman rehearsed and practiced this stunt multiple times before doing it for real.
Somewhere on youtube you can find the unedited version of this car chase and for a second the camera turns red or blacks out.
The other thing to point out about Nitrous in The Fast and Furious, is most drivers don't have NOS running for long periods of time. I believe most tuners have the nitrous setup to go into a separate air tank that would give the engine a five second boost to increase the raw horsepower. But, the problem is it pushes the tach into the red indicating the strain put on the engine. This can result in blowing the engine from overworking it. Most cases it's a blown head gasket. But there have been a lot worse scenarios that took place from using NOS for too long. I'm really surprised that all the characters didn't blow their motors after the first five seconds with the NOS juicing the engine directly.
The wiggling the gear stick is common on a car with a heavily worn synchromesh, which is a common issue in BMW E34s. Also, the autobahn thing is rubbish.
He may have driven a lot of cars but this guy doesn’t seem to have the same level of expertise we’ve become accustomed to in these segments.
Wiggling the stick in neutral won't help any worn synchro action.
I can't believe you guys didn't point out one of the coolest aspects of Ronin: the actors are ACTUALLY THERE, in the cars, with the drivers. The drivers are wearing black suits and are sitting behind the actors, controlling the cars with specialized steering wheels from the back seats. That's why Ronin is the only movie I know where the actors look legimitately scared and stressed in those scenes.
True story! He has so much knowledge about the dragging of the vault scene, random information regarding 'loose permits' and the van they struck on the corner was a member of the public etc... Then didn't cover Ronin's ground breaking techniques when it came to the logistics of filming a great car chase. tsk tsk
i'll never forget watching fast and furious the first time and laughing hysterically with my friends that were into drag racing. i had to look up what double clutching was lol
14:05- There was a sizable investigation concerning the claims that the Pinto killed bazillions of people, and I believe that only 27 were verified to have perished in Pintos due to fuel tank fires as a result of rear-end collisions.
This double pulling on the gear stick by De Niro’s character could be an attempt at a double declutch technique. De Niro’s character is a middle aged guy and could be just used to using this technique since that’s what you had to do in older cars that had no synchro gearboxes.
Of course I drive a stick right now, and occasionally I do that to make sure I am in going into the right gear, or if the gear I am going into feels stuck, you pull back and try again. It's also a car he may have never driven before, so it could be strange to him, and driving in the other side that he he is use to as well
I’ll just add to what you said that in the not so olden days, double declutch was essential whilst using a heel and toe technique which would typically involve significant slowing down before a sharp corner and dropping few gears at the same time. Gearboxes could get damaged if engine speed and wheel speed became drastically mismatched. De Niro’s character would have most likely known that

Mieczysław, here’s my train of thought: movie happens in the nineties, De Niro plays a guy in his fourties, probably been honing his driving skills for over 20 years so somewhere in 70’s he would have started. Cars then? Bit crude I’d say.
On a side note, I have Fiat 126p and double declutch every time I can… but then I’m almost middle aged too :-)
The wiggle in the gearshift on the Peugeot in Ronin is legit, Peugeots have the weirdest manual gearshift ever its literally like a knife in a bowl of jelly, just stir it around and find a gear

Love seeing this explained to others well. I was a mechanic, I've built and raced drag cars, drift cars, "circuit cars", off road, mud racers and even helped build a baha style desert racer and worked on a top fueler.
Driven/raced most of them. And yeah the fast films, and most car films are so very wrong but to most car guts it's just car pron in the way you can see some nice looking cars.
Ronin was just awesome. Almost flawless. The wiggle was because try hitting a lower gear in a french car while rapidly decelerating. The shifter just blocks the gear

People do this in Poland too. They can just wait until I'm done passing. So many people want to go unsafe speeds and go above the speed limit to save a minute.
@@RobertMorgan But most people are not hanging out in the left lane. They are just passing and will move over to the middle lane. These drivers are most of the time just impatient. So let's say there are three lanes. The right lane is most of the time packed with trucks which are only driving 100 km/h. In the middle people drive around 130/140. And then you want to drive 160 and are going on the left lane to pass. Then a driver comes from behind driving over 200 km/h flashing you. But you have to find a gap before you can safely pass to the middle lane.
Drive is honestly really good. It's just not an action movie, and it's a shame it's seen and marketed as one. It's a slow-paced character study with interesting character dynamics, and if you watch it that way, it's really damn good.
Never heard of this movie until my little brother gave me the Bluray as a gift. Luckily he didn't make the same mistake advertising this as an action movie.
The story may be simple, but it's damn well told. And the atmosphere and visual style are second to none.
Great actors, a psychedelic soundtrack. And Rottweiler-like brutality in the second half.
Of course you have to love slow burns 😅It's not a movie for everyone.

Love the episode, but need to point out some glaring omissions.
In Bullitt:
1. They pass the same green VW Bug 2 or 3 times.
2. The same hubcap keeps coming off.
3. In one shot you can see a cameraman under a bridge.
4. (My favorite) In one part of the chase, a biker wipes out in front of the cars. This was unscripted and you can see the crew running out to help him.
(My HS Mass Communication teacher showed us thus stuff)

If you're doing car stuff now: C'était un rendez vous (1976). There has never been, and never will be, anything like it. It's a short filmed in Paris during the early morning. The story and history behind it is crazy. Such a rush to watch. No closed off streets.
Is that the POV video where his mates held back traffic while he drives through Paris?
Getaway in Stockholm is pretty close to this.

@@admiralbutterscotch5147 Nope. He strapped a camera to the front bumper of his Mercedes Benz sedan low to the ground. He later recorded the audio from a Ferarri and dubbed it in. Still love it though.

Don't get me wrong i like TDIB he does do some good videos, just this title is very misleading. Guys like Paul Swift (Drive) and Mark Higgins (No Time To Die) are proper stunt drivers.
The Charger had several special stunt cars use for different scenes, a guy in Australia has the wheel stand car.
13:00 He might be double clutching, where you put the car in neutral before going to the next gear which would explain the strange looking gear change.
Drive is my ultimate favorite movie because of how "slow" is, it give a nice feeling of realism that calm me down somehow
What I like is the escalation. It's not constant action. Things get bad really fast. Even if nothing has happened yet, death can be right around the corner.
Only do this again with actual stunt driver!
French Connection Chase is SO BALLS OUT!! I still get Sweaty palms watching it!!
And BULLET is still one of my favorite chases. Except they Totally portal jump all over San Francisco in it. To Residents it is Hysterical To watch.
Highway 280 is a DREAM to speed on. I never been to the Autobahn, but 280 is similar in its design to parts of it.
The Bourne Identity has a super crazy car chase!! Pretty insane!! One of the best car chases!!
Drive is literally the most UNDERRATED car film EVER!!!
Thank god i was searching for a comment like this. The chase scences are so gritty its awesome. The ONLY thing bad about them is the sound design. Minimal effort was put in there.
