G'Day, as an ExPat Mancunian,I am glad I found this, great seeing the old pics, left Manchester back in '66👍
Having being born and raised in Wythenshawe and watching the land around the airport change from farmers fields to car parks, I found this very interesting. I didn’t know the aerodrome was at Brooklands!
Wow, I've lived in Wythenshawe all my life and knew nothing of the aerodrome. Even more "wow" is that I can see my home of the last 20 years in the newer photos, and it's only a stone's throw from where the aerodrome used to be.
I've screenshotted (is that even a word?) a couple of the 1927 photos so I can share them with my kids (kids, lol, they're 29 & 26), I'm sure they'll find them interesting.
What's funny is that I repeat one particular tale of the old lady who lived next door when I was young, she'd often tell us that _"aaaaaaaall this used to be fields before they built on it, aaaaaaaaaall fields"_ in her old woman, kinda creepy voice. Now I can prove it to them. 😁
Thanks for the informative video.
I enjoy comparing the old and recent photos to try and spot anything remaining. Not much here apart from some road outlines....
@RingwayManchester >>> FWIW: You mentioning the _Avro 504_ reminded me the MILITARY AVIATION MUSEUM in Virginia Beach, Virginia {USA}, about 44 miles north of where I live, has a _504_ on display...👍
I love all this history and vintage photos. Great stuff Lewis 👌
I'll watch this properly when my internet decides to work... subscribed as well, the Manchester/aeroplanes theme suits me, some of the radio stuff is more arcane but liked the one about the pylon up on Blackstone Edge/Windy Hill. There is of course a story behind this....
Jesus, 'Sefton Branker'... Gotta hand it to the monochrome worthies of yesteryear... They had the monopoly on 'tashes, monocles and the most utterly glorious monickers... 😉... Weird seeing Wythenshawe in the old days: I'm in Glasgow as you know, but I used to work for Timpsons, and as you'll be aware, Timpsons warehouses and various other 'concerns' are spread over Wythenshawe like a charity shop suit... I had cause to go up and down there on many an occasion... 👍🏴
Fascinating history Lewis well researched..
An interesting diversion, Lewis, from your usual content but as someone who finds radio and aviation interesting I really enjoyed this one.
Great name that first foreign thing there. so the people that worked there had to go and meet the Fokker. Makes me think of the films. Nice little video. Hardly lasted, bit of a waste of money. Losts of unused airfields, Down here, Harwell (Rutherford and a science park now, houses). Still got evidence of it, concrete road, was it. Also Culham science park, 5.5 miles or so from me. Was aerodrome.
Kingston bagpuize. little village 8 mile away or so. Still got control tower, been in that and done a drone. Drone other 2 science park mentioned. Things what they once where, now not. industrial estate and farm now Kingston bagpuize, 1 control tower standing.
At about 00:39 in this video:
*_"RINGWAY"?_* You know, I have heard THAT NAME somewhere QUITE RECENTLY...😉
*I ❤️ AVIATION*
Harefield in hansworth had an airport during the last World war today Is a football field
👍
Erm... Quite a few mistakes here me duck !
Go on?
@@RingwayManchester it was Lord Simon not Mr Tatton (the Tattons of Egerton were big local landowners though)
And Manchester's first civil aerodrome was Alexandra Park (now Hough End fields)
It even had a regular commuter service to Croydon, via Daimler Airways.
Ah cheers for the info. I thought Alexandra park was opened by the war ministry making it mil not civil
@@RingwayManchester you're right, but it functioned for 5 years as a civil aerodrome post WW1
And the last touch and go landing there was in the mid Eighties !
