  • The Colin Kaepernick controversy continues, and this time Trent Dilfer is going to chime in. Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. www.tytnetwork.com/join
    “Even as Colin Kaepernick’s protest of the national anthem has spread to other players and teams, helping to legitimize it as a valid act of political conscience now that it’s divorced from its perception as one man’s personal crusade, some reactionaries still can’t seem to let go of their own personal views on the subject. Trent Dilfer is one of those people who told Kaep, in so many words, to shut up, and Colin had a predictably appropriate and thoughtful response.
    Dilfer has gotten it from many sources for sounding like a disapproving white man patronizing a black man, but he’s taken to the radio to defend his comments as being not about race, but about football and Kaep’s status as a backup.
    “That’s the one where it does appear as if I’m saying, ‘Hey you, you just go be quiet and what you’re standing for, you can’t do this.’ That’s not what I was saying,” Dilfer said. “I guess where I was coming from was a complete football context. My nine years as an analyst, I’m on record multiple times about being passionate about team dynamics.”

    Dilfer is full of crap. Dilfer hates Kaep. Do keep in mind that there are rumors floating around that Dilfer is Baalke's mouth. Dilfer is merely saying what Baalke is thinking. Baalke and Dilfer are close friends and I am not buying this coincidence right now. Baalke and Chip are at odds over Kaep right now. Baalke wants to drop Kaep like a lead balloon but Chip wants to keep him.

      The funny thing is:
      How many Americans don't stand for the national anthem at sporting events because they can't be bothered or are to "cool" to do so? The people complaining about this players protest make it sound the entire stadium except him are all standing with their hand on their hearts. Nope, they are not. You are lucky to see 20% of the audience at the regular games standing. But of course nobody dares to complain about that. Why? Because the audience are customers and if you make them feel uncomfortable, they might not spend their money on the game.
      So let him protest and all the "patriotic" talking heads out there should STFU until they have the balls to tell the customers they have to stand too. Go ahead talking heads, piss off that money.

    • @richardgere4713
      @richardgere4713 Před 7 lety

      You're right, he was terrible too. The difference between Dilfer and Kaep is that when their careers wound down to the end and no one would sign either one, Dilfer just had to retire but Kaep played the race card to try and leverage one last contract before being forced into retirement himself. I never respected Kaepernick after his rookie year. He could have redefined the QB position but success went to his head and he wasted his potential. Only at the end of his career did he contribute money or time to racial issues, and he never spoke out until his end. Kaepernick never cared about racial injustice until he could use it for potential personal gain. To compare Kaep to real athlete statesmen like Jim Brown or Muhammad Ali is an insult to those men who truly fought injustice. Kaep needs to take his millions and his bicep kissing and just go away.

    • @jonathanmoritz8768
      @jonathanmoritz8768 Před 7 lety

      Yet, he had a way more successful career and was better QB than Kaepernick. Also, Dilfer doesn't get enough credit for that Super Bowl. Yes their D that year was legendary but Jamal Lewis's running game was legendary as well. Yes he wasn't or isn't a HOF QB however he deserved that ring as much as the Ravens D. Ravens did not even come close after Dilfer left the year later. He was a great game manager.

    I find it hilarious that every person critical of Kaepernick mentions that he is bring attention to himself....when he sat 2 weeks in silence and was asked about why he was sitting during the 3rd week and answered the questions....he didn't seek out interviews; he's answering questions asked to him. HUGE difference.

    • @robertlaurence5145
      @robertlaurence5145 Před 7 lety

      And I find it hilarious that the guy just happened to grow a huge afro three days after being interviewed, Seriously, You \ don't think he has a PR team that pulled him aside and told him to head to the salon? Then the following week as he sits on the bench He's sporting corn rows?? Funny that people can't see through his bullshit.

    • @datboyjeff
      @datboyjeff Před 7 lety +4

      Robert Laurence lol you do realize that Black people, especially mixed race, have different textures of hair. Kap's hair reacts to a perm much like a white person's does (think the painter Bob Ross, who's afro was a direct result of perming his hair). Also, his hair was already pulled back under a cap those first 2 weeks he sat down, further hiding the fact of how long it actually was.
      Kudos for reaching for any reason to discredit the man while not actually addressing the valid reasons for the protest.

    • @datboyjeff
      @datboyjeff Před 7 lety +1

      +Robert Laurence sure he's a quick google search from a Nov 2015 bleacher report article:
      img.bleacherreport.net/img/slides/photos/004/075/837/hi-res-64e7b6f4590119c0daa3f016d7f367f1_crop_north.jpg?w=630&h=420&q=75
      Notice the hair is obviously growing. FYI It's easier to have it braided under a helmet than go full Caveman like Randy Moss used to do when he had the afro poppin. Also, you can't braid it until it's in afro form if you want the texture to stay consistent and and not unravel.
      Also, and I'll say this again slowly so you can fully understand me: Kap didn't seek out the cameras. He sat quiet and unbothered for 2 weeks. During the 3rd preseason game, 1 reporter saw him sitting again quietly, not looking for a camera and drawing attention to himself and approached Kap to ask him why. He spoke his piece, then the media and racist fake patriot twitter said he was a traitor to America. People continued to ask him why, and he answered their questions, whether they be in the locker room pre or post game or during media availability during the week. He has yet to book an appearance on any talk show or sports show. He is only answering questions when they are being asked, which is the exact opposite of seeking attention. What he's doing is not cowering under the pressure and running from fake patriots or racist people when they question his act of protest and in the same breath refuse to acknowledge the reason why he is protesting (ironic that it's exactly what you are doing by complaining about his hair instead of the issues).

    • @robertlaurence5145
      @robertlaurence5145 Před 7 lety

    To put things into perspective, Trent Dilfer was the starting Quarterback for the 2000 Baltimore Ravens when they won the Super Bowl against the New York Giants. He started a total of 8 games and went 134 for 226 in completions, which is 59%, 12 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He won 7 out of 8 of his games and the team did well because of their running game and defense, not Dilfer. He is known in the NFL community as being the absolute worse Quarterback to win a Super Bowl. Jim McMahon and Brad Johnson were better than him.
    Not to mention, the Ravens released Dilfer at the end of that season and was a former first round pick by Tampa. Dilfer would never have a winning season as a starting QB again.

    Cenk, you're just wrong about freedom of speach giving players the right to sit during the anthem. The NFL could REQUIRE all its players to stand, they just haven't. Don't confuse the rights of spectators/citizens with the rights of employees of an entertainment industry employer with an interest in not alienating a significant part of its audience.

    Professional sports is the only job I am aware of where you start your work day by listening to the national anthem. Not all fans are American, not all players are American, so why do they continue this faux display of patriotism? Forcing your employees to stand for the anthem doesn't seem very American.
    And for those complaining that Kaepernick has white parents and isn't 'black' enough to protest, anybody recall this ...
    First they came for X, and I did not speak out-Because I was not X
    ...
    Then they came for me-and there was no one left to speak for me.
    I would think protesting for the rights of others would be admired, not condemned.

    What is disconcerting to me as an avid football fan, and a lot of black people are, is the distinct gap that was been revealed through this controversy between blacks and whites in sports. The NFL 68% black amongst active players yet there are only 3 of 32 head coaches who are black (4 total who are non white), and 2 black General Managers and of course no black owners. The entire NFL establishment has come out against Kaepernik it seems like

    • @LiveConcertJunkie
      @LiveConcertJunkie Před 7 lety +1

      Being a head coach in the NFL isn't based in athletic ability like being a pro is. So if we going by that, it's not really suprising since black people are 14 percent of the US population. So it's not suprising at all that most head coaches are white. Also there's a bunch of other coaching positions than just head coach

    Can Cenk stop comparing him to Muhammad Ali, etc? That was during an era where blacks actually were being systematically oppressed and segregated. The current conundrum within the black community are single-parent households which correlates to less income; many not having a father figure does not help either. A signficant quantity of black youth being told to hold scrutiny towards the police force by their peers certainly holds a suspect future. Not stating that members of the police force do not hold a bias towards blacks, but can you blame them when they commit crimes disproportionately compared to any other race? Guess that I am just an uncle Tom which I am fine with (search the origins), affirmative?

      We people a packed together; with low income jobs, sub-par housing and schooling, and put policing on top of that; then maybe you're right. The reason there aren't MORE black men heading their household is bc after being stopped by the cops for the fifth time in a month-would you keep your cool? Knowing the OTHER reason the cop stopped you, was bc of the area they were FORCED to live in. You can't ignore the last 60years without knowing the cause for these actions, now.

    Trent Dilfer, the QB who was the worst QB to ever win a Super Bowl ring and should have been a back up himself. Sure, he threw ONE touchdown in Superbowl 35, but most his teams scores were from field goals. His teams defense won that game. Special teams had one TD and defense had a pick six to go along with forcing every Giants possession resulting in a punt or turnover. Don't forget Jamal Lewis scored a rushing TD. I think Ravens offense only had like 250 total yards of offense in the game. It was a horrible Superbowl, great if you like the dominating defense Ravens had though.

    • @slashismyhommie8182
      @slashismyhommie8182 Před 7 lety

      ***** True, but Manning also had a very decorated career as a QB. Trent Differ was just shitty throughout his entire career. Yet he had that dominating defense. Imagine if Peyton Manning had that same Ravens defense for 5 seasons in his career. I wouldn't be surprised at all on hind sight if that team could have actually gone all the way undefeated and breaking the illustrious 72 dolphins record.

Ali from the start addressed the inequality amongst people. Some feel as though Kaepernick started protesting out of no where, which is fine by me. But, when he was on the height of his career he seemed by many as self absorbed and now that hes a backup he suddenly started protesting. Absolutely correct. Just look at the title: Pledge of Allegiance. I imagine that joining ISIS requires a pledge of allegiance. King George insisted on allegiance and the result was a new country founded on freedom for its citizens. As far as the national anthem goes, it didn't become "official" until the late 1800s. The lyrics by Francis Scott Key are well known, but the music was not an original composition, but, rather, taken from a song sung by a British Gentlemen's club (Talk about ironic).
