  • Colin Kaepernick is getting a lot of hate, but there are some important folks who support him. Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. www.tytnetwork...
“WASHINGTON ― Many have accused San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick of not supporting veterans since he decided not to stand for the national anthem at a preseason game on Friday in protest of how people of color are treated in America.
But not all former members of the military see Kaepernick’s protest as disrespectful.
Marcus Newsome, who served in the U.S. Army from 2000 to 2011, told The Huffington Post he was tired of seeing Kaepernick bashed for “exercising his 1st Amendment right.” In an email, he said he was also tired of people using veterans to argue against Kaepernick’s stance, “especially when that flag and anthem has been racist towards people historically, treated Veterans like crap in the past and now, and in some cases [using] us as a vehicle for their ignorant agendas.”
So he started #VeteransForKaepernick ― a hashtag for veterans to voice their support for the quarterback.”

I don't need to be honored in public by anyone for my service. I did however receive help from the VA to buy my first home, I did receive financial aid from the VA for my college, and I am currently enrolled in VA Health Care....for which I am grateful and that's been thanks enough for me.

I'm not sure why the national anthem is seen as a veterans theme song anyways. It's never made much sense to me. The same people who get mad at this guy are the ones who put the ribbons on their cars before sending our troops to die in Iraq. Most of them only care about you guys when you are beinh sent to war. That's why we have veterans all over the streets here in LA. If people really cared, we would make sure every veteran is treated the way you have been treated. That's the way it should be.

When the Cowboys wanted add something to their helmet to horror the 7 policemen that died by people from BLM they couldn't because the NFL stepped in and said there was a dress code. But now that Colin kaepernick is doing this for attention and is putting pigs as police officers the NFL is okay with it. Wtf

i support Kaepernick because i find that his motives to sit during the national anthem are actually legtiamite and considering on how most people make protests in violence now a days seeing Kaepernick do it peacefully and gives out a legit reason for doing so seems like a breath of fresh air. i also find that Kaepernick's move is brave considering on how hes risking his carrer for his cause which (though thinking for the long game is stupid) i find very bold of him and find him not afraid to cause conterversy i also find it VERY hopefull that VETERANS the very people that those against Kaepernick are saying that he insulted are FOR HIM and even saying that they are NOT FREE YET. this gives me some hope in humanity and America seeing that people trained to be basically slaves to a peice of cloth and a false ideal that is impossible to get with human nature see the truth that the nation they serve is NOT perfect and im so GLAD that they publicly acknowledge it. #ImWithKaepernick

It was just another thing we had to do. All these years later, I am surprised we had to made such a declaration at such a young age with no idea what it meant. Here's a question: Why do people assume that if you "disrespect" the flag that you are disrespecting the military?
The military serves our country. The flag is a symbol of our country. If he disrespected a military uniform (which would be a symbol of our military or of those who serve), _that_ would be disrespectful to the military. But the flag itself has nothing to do with supporting or disrespecting the troops. It seems an odd and ridiculous mental/emotional connection to make.

    • @FrizzKid05
      @FrizzKid05 Před 8 lety +16

No, it's not. The National Anthem isn't about honoring the soldiers. It's about the flag...Also, the line "The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave" is directly contradicted by the third verse that glorifies the killing of the slaves who joined the British Army because they were promised freedom.
In other words, Key loved that the blacks were killed because they switched sides to gain freedom...yeah, some "Land of the Free."

Its author was a slave owner who abused his power as US attorney general to suppress abolitionists.

Yes! I'm a Colin fan now as well. For people to go off on him is just as bad as him not standing. He chose to go with his beliefs regardless of how big his paycheck is. The reason he stood up to his reasoning to not stand is exactly why I'm a Colin fan. To compare him to Rae is just ridiculous. He didn't hurt anyone and he wasn't inciting violence. Need to look at and read and understand Our Constitution. Let me give you example peeps. Patriot means defense. It's the respect , dignity and honor of land and fellow patriotic citizens or American to defend him against oppression, injustice, and equality of life for it is a human right. Those who do nothing or do not listen to there fellow patriot are against the Constitution and are therefore consider a traitor. I'm black, a soldier, patriot and a proud American. To begin with, why on earth did we get the Veterans involved in this matter? This is not a veteran issue, this is an AMERICAN ISSUE of which he as an American has every right to do what he pleases. ...SOME veterans support his right to sit. I'm a black retired soldier. I served 23 years in the Army and deployed 3 times to Iraq. I have fought for and fully support the right of free speech. Kaepernick has every right to protest in whatever (legal) method he choses. Yes, my service allows even this dumbass do whatever idiotic thing he wants to do.
As far as Kaepernick risking his career, his play had declined greatly. He saw the writing on the wall. He was going to get cut anyway. So I can see him taking a stand (nothing to lose.) The problem is the message he's trying to put out is being overshadowed by his method. If he'd found a better method to protest, I - and many more people - would be 100% behind him.
The National Anthem isn't just "a song." it and our flag hold a great deal of meaning to many Americans (at least those who were raised right.) Since you liberals and SJWs are so worried about micro-aggressions, think of Kaepernick's actions as a micro-aggression against patriotic Americans.

The biggest problem in the United States right now is the main stream media & their push to sow the seeds of racial problems at the direction of their owners & political associations.

more emotionally than anything he had ever experienced! (read the book "Paul Robeson

Every time I see some sort of tribute to the troops or some celebrity thanking veterans for their service for defending the American way of life you never see the other side of it. Now here is a man with everything to loose exercising his right to protest in the most unoffensive way possible being called a traitor because of a song. Look up the 2nd and 3rd verses of your proud anthem sometime. Cenk is right people are not upset at his sitting down during the anthem but they are upset at the light it is shining on systemic racism you country.
Of course added to this is the NFL who will do anything to present as an perfect advertiser friendly atmosphere as possible will likely blacklist Kaepernick being to corporate whores they are. Also don't hold out too much hops that the 49rs will do the right thing either. They are part of the same machine. If the NFLPA had any guts they would get their members to support Kaepernick rather than let comments from front officials go unopposed. He should have the freedom to do whatever he wants, and take responsibility of his actions, which was pretty much what happened.

Cenk, you're losing your mind. People are upset solely because a man that makes $19 million a year, performing a job that almost every American male dreams of, refuses to show his appreciation of, and respect for, the country that gave him that incredible opportunity.

Remember that famous saying from the old us soldiers in vietnam war films, you don't know man, you weren't there, ( this was when the great american empire, the super power lost to a third world country).
I dont think people understand this racism thing, being disconnected from the world, the society that you live in having to choose your friends carefully. until it is you who is on the receiving end. I had a friend who had to fight people to stop them being racist in our school years. Now as a human, how is this right. For god's sake, we are all humans.we can live peacefully together if there were less ignorance and more understanding and alot of tolerance.
Americans should be grateful for stealing a country from the natives and got away with it. They should then share the country with others as a sign of appreciation. If people shared their country, then there would be less racism so racism in a sense is where the people do not want you to be there. Trump was voted, is obvious is a racist country, sorry border control.

If the way police treat minorities in this country bothers him so much why is he wasting his time playing a meaningless game? I just don't understand.

Racist American's specifically, absolutely hate to be forced to look in the mirror and see the injustice, ugliness and hypocrisy contained in national songs and symbols and how it conflicts with reality for those oppressed , I'm with Kaepernick. JUSTICE4ALL

Trump says illegals should be deported everyone loses their mind because of his political stance. Kapper sits for the anthem and people lose their mind over his black privileged. So why is trump worse for his political stance? Hypocrisy at its worse

Just because an individual like Mr. Kaepernick, as well as Seahawks players recently choose to sit down during the national anthem at a football game does not diminish their being Americans. The fact that they can freely and peacefully protest injustices in the United States is the epitome of being a US citizen and enjoying the rights provided in the US Constitution. As a Veteran who served both with the USN and USMC I agree with the fact that we have such rights and can express them in a nonviolent manner. As a former police officer I certainly understand that their needs to be better ways to prevent the tragedies, unnecessary brutality, and disparity, especially when it comes to the black community.

Kaepernick has every right to protest. You have every right to support him. But you managed to put a spin on his words that he didn't. You managed to put a spin on those who disagree with him...that you can't possibly know. I wish the young man had chosen a better way to express his discontent...so his apologists wouldn't feel compelled to pretty it up.

This guy should sue the NFL for infringing on his right to free speech. He's gonna lose his job over exercising his rights? Bullshit.
