      Honestly, having just binge watched a bunch of their reviews, I think that's the biggest difference between Mike and Jay when doing recommendations around weird niche things. Mike genuinely enjoys things that he knows won't appeal to anyone else, and in the review will break down all he liked but still not recommend it because he knows it's a unique perspective thing. On the other hand Jay will watch a super weird niche thing, and recommend it, but with an asterisk "if you like that sort of thing" type of thing.

    • @WelcometoHellPlus
      @WelcometoHellPlus Před 6 lety +9

      The film itself was made by the Director in his old age having, as a teenager, survived a bombing raid in a munitions factory in World War 2 by diving underneath his class for cover and then afterwards had to clear out the corpses of the people above him. Battle Royale as a movie is kind of about that feeling of the youth being lead to their deaths by the adults around them, more due to the incompetence of the older generations refusing to acknowledge the differences of those born into a different world than themselves than any initial fault of the younger generations, the idea being the adults punishing the children for growing up in a world that ironically the adults caused in the first place, making a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy. The Director's Cut does a lot to clear up the metaphor by changing the final line from "Run" to "in this moment what should an adult say to a child?". The overwork to death angle, I really don't see it xD.
      That said different strokes for different folks, the Director's Cut is definitely my own number 1 movie but it certainly has its issues. It's my number 1 just because it has never failed in making me smile every time I watch it; it's the classic case of having a movie that just clicks for them for some unknown reason....mine just happens to be a bunch of 14 year olds getting murdered.....I hope that doesn't say something about me.......I'm sure it means nothing

    Very glad to see them discuss both Ingrid Goes West and Colossal, two of my favorite movies of 2017. Ingrid Goes West in particular is just frightening in how accurate it is in how obsessed society is nowadays with social media, especially since Instagram could easily be swapped out with any other medium like Twitter or Facebook. Also, don't know if they watch it, but Aubrey Plaza is great in Legion.

      It was a good movie, but it was fairly contrived and didn’t have the impact the first one had. For me every fight scene was like a repeat of the first one in the movie in terms of stakes and tension besides the fights in public and the fight with the villains main security guard.

    So last night right after watching HITB I watched WISH UPON and loved it! The acting, decision making and direction are so bizarre! The acting made us laugh at loud at parts. After the movie I noticed....the screenwriter follows me on twitter and ive spoken with her before! She's really nice and I reached out and asked her a few questions about the movie and she answered with good humor. I think a lot was lost in translation from the writing to the direction. -Mike- I asked her about the beginning and what was lost in translation is that the daughter dies when she is riding on the bike and the mom wishes her back. Look forward to part 2 of the 2017 roundup

    • @LockeTheCole
      @LockeTheCole Před 6 lety +1

      I kinda thought the movie COULD have been a good script, your talk on the beginning cements that, that's a great twist if they had a director that could have somehow hinted on it... and been slightly competent.

    • @Escapist26
      @Escapist26 Před 6 lety +1

      I rewatched it yesterday with a friend. It's so fascinating! The overall concept is enthralling and gets your mind going. There are well executed sequences (conceptually and visually) but others so inept and baffling that even on second rewatch I exclaimed multiple times...WHAT IS GOING ON?! (in many ways such as a chinese scholar needing to be bribed with...wontons) My dream is....we see the Plinkett Review...and it inspires so many sales that we get a sequel!!!! (I think I could plan out a whole cinematic universe: sign me up for a feudal chinese prequel!)
      It's definitely a top notch "so bad it's good" movie. I bought the directors cut on amazon for 8$ and would strongly encourage others to do the same. (and in typical this movie fashion....the standard edition is 15$ (1 hour 29 minutes...and the directors cut is 8$ (1.5 hours)
